Last year was…pretty wild. Gas station holdups. Dandelions. Sheriffs. But the rest of the summer has been tame—it’s been months since any bad guys cropped up—and Charm Falls (not to mention Aubrey White’s mother) is breathing easier.
But Aubrey knows something is not right. Rabbit is not Rabbit, these days. He’s glum, restive. He seems to be waiting for something. But the scary stuff is over…right? Or does Rabbit—or his “luck”—know something the rest do not?
Without warning, luck is back with bells on. More unexplainable “coincidences.” More adrenaline and skin-of-the-teeth danger. More Rabbit.
I loved Rabbit #1—the fun and unique writing, the characters, and the goofy, exciting stories. But man, somehow, someway, this book was even better! I don’t know how Higgins did it, but he did. While the first book was fresh and funny, this one had a lot more weight. But Higgins managed to hold on to his unique style which made it one of the most interesting, fun books I’ve ever read. The character development was phenomenal! I loved the characters, especially Rabbit, in the first book. But this one sealed the deal—-they were lovable, hilarious, and flawed in the best ways.
Some favorite quotes I can’t help but include:
“But let us face the fact: he is dumb. Dumber than the last brain cell in a slug’s skull.” “I could feel the sun sinking into my skin, the cells curling like scraped butter, and the color trying to change into the shade of a blushing blossom.”
Amazing similes and metaphors hide in the nooks and crannies of every page of this book. Reading it is more fun than an Easter egg hunt.
I heartily recommend this book to anyone and their cousin. It is a stellar concoction of serious, silly, and stupendous similes. I can already tell it’s gonna be my favorite book of 2024!!
A blast and a half. I never cease to be amazed at how many turns a story can take—and I never see 'em coming. These characters are so real, and downright funny. Charles Higgins is a gifted storyteller.
Seemingly random adventures coming together in a rational, yet unpredictable way. There are no cliches with Charles Higgins! I love the writing voice, the character development, the plot...true craftsmanship. Can't wait for the 3rd book.
