About the author

I was born in 1962 in Coventry (scarily ancient, I know). I wrote my first picture book for my little brother when I was eight or nine. I loved making comics, too - pages and pages of picture stories, features and competitions.

I went to Art College in Liverpool, then got a job as fiction editor on the fab and legendary Jackie magazine.

I have worked as agony aunt on Shout magazine and also as an art teacher in the local primary & secondary schools, as well as as a freelance illustrator. These days, I am a full-time author.

I love my family, I love living in the middle of nowhere and I love my work. Of all my jobs, writing has to be the best - it's the perfect excuse to daydream, after all!

Cathy Cassidy books r amazing!!! I would definitely recommend a the chocolate box series start with the first one: Cherry's Crush and make ur way through the line
I probably enjoyed Coco caramel the best as its just a beautiful story especially with the relationship between Coco and Lawrie💞 I also enjoyed Marshmallow Skye another favourite😊
Make sure u read the series and the extras where sometimes another character tell their side to a story which is very interesting!!💟👣

Coco Caramel is the fourth "Chocolate Box Girls" book, which is a series I love! I've been anticipating this book for just under a year, so I was really happy to get my hands on it. Because Coco is twelve, and a tomboy, I thought that out of the five sisters I would be able to relae to her most out of the five sisters. In some ways, I was right, but in others, I wasn't.

Fresh and light are two words that describe the book. It has action, lots of emotion and a touch of romance. The emotion is well-described, thoughtful and really shows what it's like to be twelve- some girls are maturing, some girls aren't; or they are maturing in different ways, like Coco. Coco's level of maturity wasn't about whether or not she wore make-up or flirted with boys, it was about knowing about the world and dealing with problems that she encountered, like her sister's eating disorder and the difficulties with Honey.

Naturally, no book has no faults- and one of the few Coco Caramel has is how some things were explained. This was few and far between, of course, but in places I think some things could have clearer explanations; but I wouldn't take my word for it, I think that a lot about books I read.

Coco has a very unique character: she dreams big, she doesn't give up and she will do anything for her animals... Bake cakes, make banners or even steal a horse from a bully... I love the fact that Cathy made her determination come through her character so well, because if it hadn't been shown properly, I wouldn't have realised just how good this quality of Coco's is!

Another thing I love about the Chocolate Box Girls in general is the loyalty between the sisters. Even though they knew something bad was going on with Honey, they kept their "sister's-don't-tell" rule... But perhaps in other ways this wasn't so good, as it got Honey in more trouble. Even if this wasn't so good, the loyalty is still beautiful to me: they still kept their promise even when i would have helped their family. Good or bad, that is a beautiful sisterly thing to have.

Overall, I loved the book- a light read for whenever. Avaliable for £5.00 on Amazon (link above), I would definitely say it's worth it!

Cathy Cassidy is definitely one of my favourite authors and has once again lived up and rised above my expectations. I can't wait for the next, and probably final, installment to The Chocolate Box Girls!

I am someone who usually sticks to adult or young adult fiction and never really dip into books below that age range. As a child and younger ages teen I did read a lot of Cathy Cassidy books as I grew up – and by that I mean all. She still does classify as YA though, although more so the younger kind. Either way, her books still have a mature feel to them that I have always been able to enjoy. I read the previous three books in this series before I started blogging which is why I am suddenly reviewing the fourth book. Each of these books do link up are all so individual that I think they can be read as standalones as well.

This book follows the youngest sister of the family, called Coco. She is into looking after animals and wants to save all the endangered creatures. She finds it hard to struggle with the fact that most people find her too young to do anything by herself, or think she won’t be committed. As well as that, all her friends have suddenly become interested in make-up and boys, none of them are interested in saving animals like her! As well as having some family problems going on at school, there is a mean boy called Lawrie in her class. He makes sure to be particularly cruel to Coco, even though she tries her best to be nice to her. Can Coco get along with Lawrie or has she bitten off more than she can chew this time?

I love Coco’s character so much because even though she is quite young, she is heart-strong and just begging to be an independent person. She gets looked down on too much. And even though she is supposed to be ten or eleven in the book, I am sure so many other older teenagers like me can relate to this. Don’t we all want a bit of independence and what to feel like we are taken seriously? As well as this, Cathy Cassidy also manages to create a lovely romance in her stories that will have your heart fluttering.

J’avais complètement oublié celui là et il était assez sympa. Bon par contre j’ai beau bien aimé Coco je trouve son personnage assez étrange. Le principe est qu’elle trouve que tout le monde la prend pour un bébé mais justement quand on a lit le livre elle nous semble beaucoup plus petites que les autres. Alors qu’en soit elle n’a qu’un peu plus d’un an de moins que les jumelles ? En plus elle prend vraiment des décisions conséquentes sur des coups de tête sans s’en rendre compte c’est assez perturbant.

Okei, tämä oli kyllä hyvä, mutta ei yltänyt ihan muiden Suklaamurusten tasolle. Alussa tämä oli jotenkin laimea ja vähän liian heppatyttömäinen ja en tiedä - sanotaanko vaikka, että ymmärrän, miksi Lawrie piti Cocoa ärsyttävänä. Pidemmälle mentäessä kirjaan kuitenkin tuli mukaan uusia ulottuvuuksia, ja pääsin ehkä vähän paremmin Cocon kanssa samalle taajuudelle. Ja loppuratkaisu oli tietysti huikea, mutta mielestäni sitä ei oikein ehtinyt sisäistää - loppu tuntui menevän ikään kuin pikakelauksella... No joo, ei vain paras Suklaamurusista, vaikka Coco ja Lawrie olivat aika mahtavia henkilöitä - ja luojan kiitos he EIVÄT päätyneet yhteen!

Après Cœur salé, j'ai attaqué Cœur coco, sur la plus jeune soeur des Filles au chocolat. J'avais beaucoup aimé l'histoire de Shay et j'ai encore plus apprécié celle-ci, sans doute car le roman est plus long donc plus développé.

Coco est une grande passionnée de la nature et des animaux. Au début du roman, elle soutient énormément de causes et n'hésite pas à s'investir en vendant des gâteaux à la récréation pour récolter de l'argent. Je me suis tout de suite attachée à cette jeune fille de douze ans qui a une grande confiance en elle et une idée très précise de la personne qu'elle veut devenir.
Pourtant, tout bascule lorsqu'elle ment pour monter son poney préféré Coconut. En effet, l'animal panique et éjecte Coco. Le centre équestre est alors forcé de le vendre à un homme : Seddon. Lorsque Coco s'aperçoit qu'il maltraite les chevaux, elle décide, avec l'aide d'un camarade de classe énigmatique : Stevie, de kidnapper le poney ainsi qu'un second enceinte et mal en point. Pendant tout le roman, Coco s'efforce de s'occuper des poney en cachette, en espérant que personne ne découvre qu'elle est la voleuse.

Nous suivons bien sûr l'histoire de Coco avec les poney mais également avec Stevie. Au début, Coco ne le supporte pas et le prend pour une brute. Néanmoins, leur passion des poneys les rapproche et Coco commence à voir quel garçon il est réellement sous sa carapace. J'ai trouvé leur relation mignonne, ils sont jeunes et c'est plus une histoire d'amitié qu'une romance mais j'ai aimé découvrir, tout comme Coco qui était réellement Stevie. J'ai malheureusement deviné la vérité sur son compte assez rapidement. On se demande d'ailleurs comment Coco a fait pour ne pas le comprendre, quoique comme elle le dit si bien, on ne voit pas toujours les choses lorsqu'elles se passent juste sous notre nez!

The 4th installment of The Chocolate Box Girls and really excellent I have to say. I really love this series because it shows how disfunctional a family can be and how different things can make and break something. I have always thought that Cathy Cassidy's books centered too much on boys and relationships but even though this series does have a new romance for each sister, they each face problems that are so relevant in this day and age. Coco is raving mad for animals and loves to play the violin, but she feels like she is shut out a lot since she's the youngest Tanberry and tries her hardest to be heard with little results. But she's a trooper, that's what I love about her. Lawrie was a really interesting character and I certainly know a few boys like him! You have to admit that Cathy Cassidy has no problem writing real, relatable characters in each of her books. Coco has this strong sense throughout the book that boys aren't as important as animal rights and family even though her friends may disagree and even though she seems to like Lawrie at the end of the book I'm glad that she stuck to her guns and didn't go for the long distance thing because that angle would've ruined the book for me. I mean she's 12 for goodness sake! But I secretly hope her and Lawrie meet again in the future and that they get together!

I really loved this cute book and finished it three days. I never thought coco was a very important character in the past books but in coco caramel she explains how she's the youngest and always treated like a baby. But my favorite character would have to be lawrie Marshall, I love how misunderstood ,mysterious he is and especially his past. The relationship between coco and lawrie really developed over the book and how by the end both of them had changed for the better. The only criticism I have is all the horse stuff got a bit boring I wish all the riding horses information was either less dragged out or explained more so someone like me could understand. Other than that this book is a sweet heart warming lite read!

Even though I've enjoyed all of the chocolate box girls books, I felt a little hesitant at first about what this one had in store. Coco was always little kid like in the others, but after a chapter it two i saw that she was just simply on the verge of becoming a teen! I thought that the personal side of her book, the whole thing with the horse dragged on at the start but I really enjoyed the story with lawrie and the family side of her story! Definitely takes a while to flow but turns out great, I'd even put it up there with cherry crush( my favourite)

Pour ce qui est de ce quatrième tome, je dois dire qu'il fait, pour l'instant, partie de mes préférés. Il se place juste après Coeur Cerise et juste avant Coeur Guimauve. Voilà mon top trois des tomes de la série, à ce jour ^^. J'ai énormément aimé le personnage de Coco qui est une jeune héroïne qui a une certaine maturité, un trait de caractère qui a trouvé un écho en moi et que j'ai fortement apprécié.

Ici, nous suivons les aventures de Coco, la plus jeune des filles Taberly. Dans les tomes précédents, elle a toujours été un peu en retrait, c’est donc un réel plaisir, ici, d’enfin pouvoir mieux la découvrir. Coco est un personnage attachant, elle est toujours un peu trop chouchoutée par sa famille, et ça a le don de l’agacer. En effet, elle aimerait avoir un peu plus de liberté, elle aimerait qu’on arrête de la prendre pour un bébé. En effet, elle n’a pas tort, c’est peut être elle la plus petite, mais ses soeurs sont loin d’être un exemple de solidité, Honey est toujours instable, et je ne vous parlerai pas des autres car vous n’avez peut être pas lu les livres, je ne voudrais pas trop en révéler.

Coco est une écolo, elle est fan des animaux et lutte déjà pour la sauvegarde des différentes espèces animales. Elle est très attachée à Coconut, une ponette un peu sauvage du club d’équitation ou elle prend des cours. Malheureusement Coconut est vendue à un nouveau propriétaire très violent. Coco ne peut pas accepter cela, elle va se faire aider par Stevie, un camarade de classe qui a le don de l’agacer, mais qui comme elle, ne peut accepter cette situation.

J’ai trouvé ce tome légèrement en retrait par rapport aux autres. Attention, je ne dis pas que je n’ai pas aimé ! Mais les autres ont presque été tous des coups de cœur ou pas loin. Ce n’est pas le cas ici, j’ai aimé cette lecture, mais je lui ai trouvé des défauts. Tout d’abord, Coco au début ne m’a pas paru sympathique. Elle juge beaucoup sans réfléchir. Mais cela reflète à la perfection son jeune âge, et on lui pardonne rapidement. J’ai trouvé l’histoire également plus enfantine, et un peu plus tirée par les cheveux par rapport à la réalité.

L’écriture du livre reste très agréable, il y a toujours autant de fraîcheur, c’est une lecture idéale pour l’été.

Si Coco m’a un peu dérangé au début, j’ai par contre très apprécié Stevie, un garçon taciturne mais qui cache un lourd secret. J’ai également aimé l’avancé sur le personnage d’Honey qui laisse présager un dernier tome certainement dépaysant, mais certainement explosif. J’ai hâte !!!

Even though I didn't love it as much as the others (especially the first two) in the series, I did really enjoy Coco's addition to this gorgeous series. Coco had a really charming, engaging narrative voice and I really loved her gutsy, lively attitude to life as it felt really fresh and she had an enjoyably positive mindset. I enjoyed the 'youngest one' angle as it gave new perspective to where Coco fitted into the family and it also brought to life Coco's despair at never being taken seriously and being the 'only one who cares' in relation to her passion about environmental issues.
Also, I am really into Lawrie. Hello? Where were all the dark and brooding twelve-year-olds when I was that age? He was the ying to Coco's yang, the sensible, realistic dark to her crazy, determined light.
However, the 'impulsive' aspect to Coco's character I unfortunately found a little annoying. It made the whole plot seemed a little Enid Blyton and far-fetched, which slightly ruined it. I don't know if it was just me, but Coco's mindset of 'I've got an idea. It will make everything better. We HAVE to do it. No, we ARE going to do it' was a bit irratating. She came off, to me at least, as slightly spoilt. It was all a bit Jacqueline Wilson, which I thought I had escaped when, aged twelve, I progressed from her to Cathy. But whatever.
My only other criticism was that Cathy left the twist and the 'big reveal' a bit too late, and so the ending felt a bit rushed. Aside from this, Coco's was a great adventure which definitely embodied the spirit of the liveliest, craziest Tanberry sister.

This book was absolutely amazing!Totally recomend it.
it's another classic.I love how Cathy talks about fun,and joyful topics,but at the same time,very smart and serious topics as well.
Out of all of the chocolate box girls,Coco and Honey are probably the most relatable.Coco's love for animals is huge,and that is one of the reasons i find her a very likable character.(not saying the other characters are unlikable)
I deffinetly give it a 5/5.
p.s I did not know that ''the chocolate box girls'' were actual series,and only after seing the back pages of the book,I understood that I kinda messed up,as I read ''Coco caramel'',which is only the #4 book of the series,but oh well,it still doesn't change my opinion about the book.uwu

Pas de suspense, j'ai kiffé ma mémé en découvrant ce quatrième tome, le personnage de coco est tellement attendrissant, sa passion pour les animaux m'a beaucoup touché, et j'ai réussi a m'identifier enfant à coco.
Ça se lit tout seul bien entendu, c'est tout mignon, gourmand et coloré.
J'aimerais tellement que ce genre de livre se lise en classe par des élèves de ce2 cm1. Bien sur celui ci est bien plus adapté à un public de petites filles mais cette série est définitivement pleine de morales plus qu'importantes dans la vie quotidienne d'un jeune enfant/pré ados.

"En résumé, un quatrième tome que j'ai apprécié, malgré la grosse faute de l'auteure de donner une aussi grosse liberté de vie à une jeune fille à peine âgée de douze ans. Cependant, la cause qu'elle défend et le fait qu'elle essaye de sauver Coconut de son problème est louable. Mais il est vrai qu'une aide adulte aurait pu changer la donne et que les soucis que Coco et son ami traversent auraient pu être amoindris. Je lirai évidemment la suite avec plaisir, curieuse de découvrir ce que cache vraiment Honey dans son cœur."

WOOOOAAAHH I did not expect that plot twist!!!!

Okay…so I wasn’t really looking forward to this book because I thought that Coco was rrrreeeeeaaaaaallllyyy dumb.

Okay, quick summary:

Coco is the youngest of all 5 Tanberry sisters. She often feels that even though she is 12-years-old, she is still the baby in the family and is often treated that way. One day, at riding school, she decides that she wants to ride her favourite pony Caramel, but Caramel is a rescue and often freaks out when people ride her, so the riding school don’t like younger riders riding her (understandably), but Coco lies to the teacher and says that she’s had permission to ride Caramel. When Coco rides Caramel, Caramel doesn’t like how Coco’s legs brushed up against her neck and she panics and Coco is thrown off. She gets into trouble for this as she hasn’t had permission. When she gets back to the stable for her next lesson, a boy from the school (Lawrie, who happens to work at the stables) tells Coco that everything that is happening is all her fault. But Coco doesn’t know what is her fault, but she then finds out that Caramel has been sold to some man called Seddon. Coco rushes back to Lawrie and Lawrie explains that Seddon is a big bully and doesn’t say anything else. On her way home, Coco sees a jeep with a horse box attached to it making its way from the stables. Coco then makes her way up to Seddon’s house (Blue Downs House) to say her last goodbye to Caramel, but whilst she’s up there, she witnesses Seddon beating Caramel. She is deeply upset by this and being the determined and animal-loving person that she is, she stayed the night in the woods by Blue Downs House so she could steal Caramel at midnight. Midnight comes and she breaks into the stables to see Lawrie feeding Caramel, she is shocked and also notices that there is a pregnant horse with Caramel. Her and Lawrie take the two horses up to the ruined cottage a short walk up from the house, they both go up there each morning and night to feed them and make sure everything’s alright. Soon after, newspapers jump on the story of the stolen horses which really frightens Coco, because whilst all this is happening, her big sister Honey is driving her mum and stepdad up the wall. She starts taking furniture up to the ruined cottage and stays the night there. That night, Spirit (the pregnant horse) gives birth to Star. And Coco explains to Lawrie what’s happening at home with her sister Honey, and Lawrie shares that life at home is difficult for him but that she wouldn’t understand. Coco tells Lawrie about her concerns with the newspapers and he tells her that Seddon has bought two more ponies and that they need rescuing. So a couple nights later they break back into the stables. Coco notices a skinny whippet dog whilst she’s there and is convinced that he needs rescuing too. When her and Lawrie are just about to take the horses and dog to the cottage, Seddon shoots his gun near Lawrie, which panics them both. Seddon runs over and tells Lawrie how much of a waster he is, “just like his dad”. He beats Lawrie and even throws him. A woman and a little girl come running over, begging Seddon to stop. Seddon goes over to the woman and slaps her which makes her bleed. Lawrie shouts to the woman “MUM RUN!!!”, which makes Coco realise that Lawrie’s tough home-life is because Seddon is his stepdad. Coco rushes the family and animals over to the car. They make their way over to the Tanberry’s house and end up staying for two weeks. Lawrie and his family end up moving back up north and Coco feels sad to say goodbye to him. In the end, Coco now has Caramel all to herself.

This is probably my favourite book in the series so far! It was so well-written and exciting!

I really do think that Cathy’s books should come with some trigger warnings. Summer’s Dream for eating disorders and Coco Caramel for animal and domestic abuse.

That plot twist was shocking!! I can’t believe that Seddon was actually Lawrie’s stepdad!! I felt really sorry for Lawrie, Jasmine and Sandra…

Characters that did good:

Lawrie - I really liked Lawrie!! He was really kind and cared for animals. He successfully helped Coco rescue four ponies and a dog!! I felt really bad for him because he had to watch the animals and his family get beaten up all the time by Seddon. He was kind and caring and that’s all you need in a friend! The scene where he left was really sad!

Characters that did bad:

Seddon - I couldn’t make a “characters that did bad” list without Seddon at the top!!! He was an awful, abusive, horrible, absolutely repulsive man. He beat horses and his wife and stepchildren. I really hope he went into prison after this book because he really was horrific!!

Cherry - Cherry really bothered me during this book. Coco told her about the whole situation with the horses and she ran to no one!!! I know that Coco begged her not to tell but I would have told my parents because Coco got herself into real danger!

Charlotte & Paddy - Why did they literally focus on the chocolate business so much that they didn’t even notice that they’re kid smuggled horses????? Like WHATTTT??!?!?! Really irresponsible parenting.

Honey - Honey did all of these stupid things during the book and everyone felt bad for her. LIKE NO!! She totally deserves the punishment she had because she is awful to everyone!!!!!! I understand that she is family but come on! How they were so gentle with her was ridiculous!

Overall I absolutely loved this book and I am gutted that it’s over!!

Le tome consacré à la plus jeune des soeurs Tanberry, Coco. Un jeune demoiselle qui aime les animaux plus que tout et qui veut tout faire pour les sauver en récoltant des fonds en vendant des cupcakes à l'école. De toutes les filles, c'est de Coco dont je me sens la plus proche. J'ai adoré l'intrigue de ce tome, même si je trouve dommage que Honey prenne un peu l'ascendant dans toute la saga. Elles sont 5, elles ont chacune leur tome mais Honey prend une place importante dans chacun d'entre eux.
Jusqu'ici, c'est le tome de la saga que j'ai préféré !

Une fois de plus, un tome très sympathique. Cathy Cassidy parvient à maintenir la même ambiance, la même synergie chez cette famille, de tome en tome, tout en nous plongeant dans un environnement à chaque fois radicalement différent. Coco la petite écolo est un bien bel exemple pour la jeunesse d'aujourd'hui, loin des préoccupations futiles du monde moderne, n'écoutant que sa passion pour la nature.
Très rafraîchissant et mignon au possible !

I have read the past three Chocolate Box girls books (Cherry Crush, Marshmallow Skye and Summers Dream) last year but reading Coco Caramel was quite an experience, I haven't read a book from an animal-loving, persons point of view but I must say I did enjoy reading about the adventures Coco makes to save the horses.

Coco wasn't my favourite sister at first, but now she is!! Well, she tied close with Skye... but anyways! I absolutely loved the story so much! Now, I got to understand Coco better. Lawrie was my favourite character! He is awesome! And I can't wait to see what happens to Honey... I'd love to see things from her point of view!

Coco était jusqu'à présent le personnage qui restait le plus mystérieux à mes yeux puisqu'elle n'était pas beaucoup présente dans les tomes précédents. Je ne savais pas trop à quoi m'attendre en commençant Cœur Coco mais j'ai vraiment adoré son histoire, son amour des animaux et son engagement malgré son jeune âge!
