This book has so many big emotions, you may prefer not to read it while out in public. I didn’t actually end up a bawling, weepy mess, but I think that was far more good luck than good management. Grief, survivor’s guilt, a nosy, well-meaning small town that want to help, and the hearts of three precious angels; Kate and Marley are trying to juggle a lot. I was invested in whether or not they’d be successful from the moment I started reading. I loved these two together in almost equal proportion to how absolutely batty they drove me. I was torn between wanting to hug the stuffing out of them and knocking some sense into their stubborn skulls. I was kind of pathetically grateful when they got out of their own way and let the Happy Ever After I wanted to see happen. I have adored the Hartson family and Hartson’s Creek from the moment I cracked open the very first Heartbreak Brother book. My love for this family has only deepened with every new chapter the author gives us.
I received a complimentary advance copy of this book from the author.

You did it again <3
I was in love from the first page <3
It's one of the best books Carrie has ever written. Kate and Marley are so adorable, and I would love them to pieces if I could.

Rating: 3/5 stars

Primary Tropes/Features: Single Parent (Mother), Firefighter romance, Forbidden romance, Best friend’s Widow, 3rd person narrative,

Secondary Tropes/Features: Family focus, Light angst, MCs in their 30s-40s

Micro Trope: “Fuck it” moment

Safety warning/Triggers:

That One Heartbreak was an enjoyable story with a mix of sweet, steamy, fun, and emotive moments.

Kate and Marley were both likeable characters who were given equal amounts of character growth and I was invested in both of them. I enjoyed learning more about each of them as the book progressed and there was a part of me rooting for them to get their happy ending. Their book deals with overcoming grief and guilt and I think the processes of grief that the main characters went through were well thought out and written. I didn’t connect emotionally to the story, that is to say I didn’t get upset or sad reading this, but I could understand and sense the emotion being depicted and it did make the characters a little more real.

The romance development was paced well and I liked the weighting of scenes which were just Kate and Marley and ones that were them with Kate’s children. There was an element of innocence to their relationship in that first teenage love kind of way as a result of their excitement at seeing one another and spending time together which was balanced well with the maturity that came from their age and life experiences. I enjoyed seeing their romance development and thought they had good chemistry. They were initially presented as falling for one another a few years after her husband passed away but later in the book it is revealed that Marley had loved her for years, even when her husband was alive. It was an unexpected twist to their romance but one that I would have loved to have seen developed further than it was because I think it would have added to their romance and to Marley’s characterisation. Their romance was depicted as a forbidden one, understandably so when the woman you’ve fallen for is the widow of your friend and colleague, and whilst there was some hesitancy on the main character’s parts there wasn’t much focus on the depiction of it being forbidden. Their romance was very easily accepted and whilst it fit with the overall tone of the book I think it left the book lacking which it came to the angst I expected.

The depiction of the small town trope and the family focus was done well. I enjoyed scenes that gave an insight into their lives whilst living in a small town, the scenes involving the town’s gossip hungry old ladies, and the sense of love and ease that came from Marley and Kate’s families. This is the first book I have read from this series but I may potentially come back to revisit it.

This was an overall easy read with a simple to follow plot with likable characters and a romance you could get invested in.

I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntarily, honest review of it.

This story is about Marley Hartson, twin brother of Pres (you can read his story in ‘That one touch’). I was really looking forward to this story and I enjoyed it, it was a good story, emotional, but also funny at times and there were some steamy scenes too. .

Kate Connelly is a new character in this series. She’s 35 years old, widow and mother of three children. James, who’s 15 years old (he was her husband’s first child, she adopted him when she married his father). Ethan is 8 years old and Addy is 6 years old. Two years ago Kate’s husband died unexpectedly, it was difficult for them all. So for the last two years, Kate was on her own for everything. Although people around her offered her help, Kate wanted to do everything herself. She wanted to prove to everyone (and herself) that she was strong enough to do it all on her own.

Marley has a construction company together with his brother Pres. But in his spare time he’s also a firefighter. Two years ago he had to watch when as his boss (and best friend) Paul died before his eyes. Marley felt a lot of guilt and he then made the promise to take care of Paul’s family. But that’s hard when Kate doesn’t want any help. But now, due to certain circumstances, Kate and her children need Marley’s help. By spending more time together, Marley and Kate grow closer. But they have to be careful. There are Kate’s children and living in a small town where people see everything and love to gossip means they have to be extra careful if they want to spend time together (especially if you want to keep it a secret). Things are going very well between them but when an accident involving one of Kate’s children triggers their feelings of guilt. It takes forgiveness and some heart-to-heart conversations to let go of the past and allow love to begin.

Just like ‘The Heartbreak brothers’ series, I also enjoy the next generation series. The stories are a mix of small town, sweet, fun but they also include some steamy sex scenes. This story is also told from both POV’s.
Just like the other men in this series, Marley is protective, a hard worker and he loves his family very much. It’s wonderful to see how he also finds love. Marley has always had a bit of a crush on Kate, but she was the wife of his best friend Paul. But now that she’s a widow he struggles with his feelings. A big part of him wants to claim Kate and her children, but another part feels guilty about it. But the chemistry between them is too big to ignore, especially now that Kate is ready to let another man into her heart and life. I really loved the bond and interaction between Marley and Kate’s children. He was great with them all. He was a good friend to James, who was at a time in his life where he needed a friend a friend to talk to and get advice from more than a father figure. Ethan and Addy were younger and were looking for someone they could feel safe with, to play with, to be a father to them.

It was great to see Press and his wife Cassie, his younger brother Hendrix and Marley’s parents again. The brothers are still wild, even though they are older now. It was lovely to see how they all showed their love in different ways.

Shana, Kate’s best friend was great too. She supported Kate in various ways, from drinking wine together to looking after Kate’s children. She was a loyal friend and she was always there when Kate needed here.

I was super happy with the epilogue. I really love them.

I'm thinking this author just isn't for me. I didn't like Kate at all. I understand that she lost her husband, and she was caring for three kids, but I do not understand refusing to speak with the ppl at the firehouse. Do I get that handling your own grief, the kids and theirs would be too much? Maybe, but I also think having ppl who understand, who knew your husband and who also suffered a great loss who you could talk to would actually be great for you. I also think accepting help in really tough times is not weak or whatever the Hell she was thinking. Being snarky and rude to people who just want to be kind is actually really shitty. I also understand being scared for you son who wants to join the junior firefighters, but he's explained that he spoke with his father about this, and this is something he wanted to share with his father, and instead of listening and working through your own issues about it, you refuse to allow him to participate. Being scared is YOUR problem, not the kid's problem, and refusing to allow him to do something he wanted to do and had discussed with his father?! Beyond shitty. Maybe recognize that the issue is yours, be honest with the kid about your fears. I get he's a teen and shouldn't have to bear all of this, but not telling him your real concerns and making up lies is a really terrible thing to do. He is old enough to understand your fears though. And then tell him you'll get some help for your many issues and let him participate. Maybe set aside time each weekend after his juniors thing to talk about what he learned, what activities they did, and also maybe listen to his concerns as well as expressing your own. Maybe he'd even decide it's not what he really wants to do with his life. Being an adult and talking tends to help situations rather than lying and just ignoring what your kids want. When he resents you for the rest of his life, well... zero sympathy here.

SO SWEET!!

I adored this book. It was so heartfelt with a heavy dose of romance and spice.

Marley Hartson is a construction worker and volunteer firefighter—but his passion is firefighting. His best friend, Paul, at the fire house passed away suddenly 2 years ago, and since then, Marley made it his mission to look after Paul’s widow Kate and her kids. The problem is, Kate wants nothing to do with Marley.

Kate was so heartbroken by the passing of her husband that she pushed Marley and anyone at the fire house away. She lived her day to day in a type of solitude, never really living and just getting through the day. She knows Marley is always hovering nearby, his nightly jog by their house each to ensure everything looks ok, offering his help when he can, even though she never accepts.

It’s not until Kate’s oldest gets himself into a bit of trouble that Kate and Marley begin to connect. Finally she accepts his help and learning how wonderful it feels to let someone into their little world. It’s not long after that Kate and Marley begin to acknowledge an attraction to each other, but neither know how to handle it. It’s innocent, it’s sweet, it’s pure, and when they finally give in to their desires, it’s total fire!

I loved the pacing of this story and how they handled the forming of their relationship. Kate and Marley were always putting her kids first, as well as their own individual devotion to Paul’s memory. Their giddiness for each other was so consuming—like teenagers sneaking around after discovering their first love. Its was absolutely adorable. Kate and Marley’s story is filled with family, romance, and so much love. This is my favorite book of this series, and devoured it in 1 day!

Well Miss Elks you did it again, a great addition to one of my favourite places lol.

I always feel safe that I’ll love reading anything written by Carrie Elks as I know I’m gonna get the feels and emotions which make the story seem real.

Through tragedy and sorrow comes love and devotion.

This had all the feels and more, emotional overload of sadness, guilt, friendship, humour, passion, love, and HEA.
After loosing her husband Kate is left alone to bring up their 3 children.
She pushes everyone away not wanting sympathy nor charity but Marley was her husband’s best friend and he promised to take care of the them as he died in front of him, so he does what he can stealthily, knowing Kate wouldn’t be happy if she knew he kept an eye on her and her 3 children.
When her teen wants to join the junior firefighters to be like his dad and make his dad proud he gets Marley to chat to his mum as she’s afraid of the danger and holding him back.
Then there’s the dating issue and moving on.
I loved all the emotion that kept the story interesting and wanting me to read on, and the supple humour added in was perfect.
I was definitely rooting for a HEA between Kate and Marley.
I felt for Marley as his emotions got the better of him guilt of not saving his best friend, guilt of loving his best friends wife/ widow, guilt for being their to love and care for his children, it broke my heart at the guilt and sorrow he felt.
It was lovely to hear from characters in previous books tho I wouldn’t have minded more of it lol Such a natural flow as a whole and I loved it and recommend you one click it for yourself.

The Hartson twins haven't had the best of luck when it comes to love. We've already read Presley's story, so this time, Marley gets his spot in the limelight. As their band's drummer, he's usually more in the background, but this man definitely deserves a spotlight from time to time!

Having been in love with his best friend's wife, he has always tried to bury those feelings. It did, however, make him even more dedicated to keep his promise as his friend lay dying: to protect his family.

Kate is trying to move on from her husband's sudden death two years ago. She moved into a new house, not as close to the fire station where he worked and died, and has been avoiding his former colleagues and friends. It's just too confronting for her. So you can imagine her annoyance at his best friend Marley's nightly runs past her house. She knows he's checking up on her, but doesn't think it's necessary.

Meanwhile, she finds herself thinking of him in a different light from time to time, despite trying her hardest not to. It's not that she intends to spend the rest of her life alone; it's just that it feels weird having those thoughts about her husband's friend.

Similarly, Marley is riddled with survivor's guilt. Add this to his lingering crush on Kate, and he feels guilty for even entertaining the thought.

This book deals with overcoming grief and guilt, while also navigating family dynamics and children growing up without their father. There's heartache and tears, but also the almost adorable phases of new love and how that can make you feel like a teenager all over again.

A definite recommendation!

Oh My Heart..!!
What a wonderful love story by Carrie Elks...so deep and emotional and I loved reading it.
This is Marley's book and it is such a tragic story, but from that tragedy something really special and beautiful emerges from the heartbreak.
Marley is an on call Firefighter whose best friends lost his life, dying in Marley's arms leaving a wife and 3 children behind...So Marley takes it upon himself to take care his widow and his children, looking out for them and being there if they need him.
Kate is the widow consumed by grief and trying to carve out a different life without her husband and trying to help her children with their sadness and the loss of their Father.
Kate is fiercely independent and doesn't want help but she is struggling and so is reluctant and humbled to have to lean on her husband's best friend Marley for help.
Marley is amazing and I adored the way he was there for Kate and the relationship he had with her 3 kids...he was a great male figure in their lives.
The chemistry between Kate and Marley and the attraction is surprising and a relationship develops between them.
But their new found romance is shadowed by guilt they both think they are betraying the one person they both love and lost.
Marley and Kate's love story is really beautiful about life after loss and trying to find happiness again and the journey to reach that happiness.
This book is so easy to fall in love with and I really enjoyed reading it,I loved all the characters and everything about it...Carrie Elks's talent really shines.
Loved it,
5 stars.

That One Heartbreak is the story of single mom Kate and Marley. Kate has been taking care of her three kids alone, since her husband died two years. Slowly on she is feeling like her life is getting back on track again. The last thing she expected is for her to develop feelings for her late husbands friend Marley. But she doesn’t seem to be able to help herself. Especially when Marley is always there for her whenever she needs him.

I love Carrie Elks, and I’ve been loving this series so much. So I got high expectations for this book before I started. Luckily, this book definitely matched my expectations easily. Kate and Marley’s story is easy to read. And the chemistry between them is definitely addicting. From the very first page I was rooting for these two.

Next to a great romance, I loved the fact that these characters where both in their mid thirties. Which felt really relatable and I loved that. Kate was a great mom, and her struggles with raising kids felt so real!

That One Heartbreak was a wonderful read that I didn’t want to put down. The small town setting, the chemistry and romance.. it made for another great read. And a big plus.. That One Heartbreak can easily be read as a standalone.

Great elements made a terrific story!😍

4.5🌟 stars
I love a romance where the guy falls first and stories that include single parents holding the family together through trying times. That One Heartbreak features both. It's a great read.

Kate, widow of a firefighter and mother of three, has been convinced by her best friend that she's ready to date again. She tries dating a stranger but why look further afield? Her dead husband's best friend Marley has unrequited feelings for her and a promise to keep to his dead buddy.

I found the family drama produced by the two sons, James and Ethan, very believable. Kate's youngest is a sweetie pie. And Kate's refusal to ask for help, to go it alone, causes problems but made for an interesting conflicted character.

But Marley was my favorite. Author Carrie Elks built a strong, caring hero, great with kids and sensitive to Kate's needs and concerns. Just the kind of guy to bring the romance. And a bit of an acrobat with all his experience in climbing through windows. Must be putting his fire fighter training in use to win the lady!

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Damn Carrie you’re trying to have me crying on the plane while reading sweet moments between Kate and her son James 😭

Really liked this book, another lovely one from Carrie. It’s a very nice romance that is low stakes - not too angsty, heartwarming, and has some steamy scenes.

I absolutely loved the romance between Kate and Marley, it came on smooth and fairly easy; though, this is definitely a story of love in and after grief and they do touch on that quite a few times. However, I think I might have liked the family elements of this story even more than the romance. It was just so sweet! As always, great small town vibes too.

Loved seeing the family take to Marley as well as the relationship between Kate and her kids. Of course Marley’s family is great too and we know them from the original Heartbreak Brothers series and the other books in this current 2nd gen series too. All can be read as standalone though.

If you want a nice, smooth romance with loveable characters, love after grief, and small-town vibes, check this one out!

4/5 ⭐️

From the first page you can feel the angst jumping off the page. Kate is determined to show everyone that she was a strong capable single mother of three & didn’t need help from anyone especially her late husband’s “Paul” best friend & fireman brother Marley Hartson.
She finally lets Marley in to help with a situation with her oldest James. My heart aches for both Kate & Marley because after two years they both are still grieving the loss of Paul and both are carrying guilt. I love the Hartson family & the small town of Hartson’s Creek; nothing stays a secret for long. But through chaos, chatter & gossip the family & town come together & support one another.
Now Kate and Marley need to process grief and forgive themselves to move forward. Thank you Carrie Elks for the extra surprise at the end. Keep your eyes open for the Easter eggs weaved in the story. Thank you for continuing this family and towns story with this next generation. I’m looking forward to Hendrix‘s story but at the same time a little sad for it to end.

I love this authors writing and this book did not disappoint.
This is book three in The Heartbreak Brothers - new generation,  and it is great to have Marley’s story.
Marley’s best friend Paul, died in his arms and he vowed to look after his family. Kate does not want help, she needs to do everything herself. Look after her family, look after her house and mend her heart that shattered into a million pieces, the day that Paul died.
Marley won't forget his promise, no matter how stubborn Kate is, he will always check in on them.
This story deals with a delicate subject matter. The sudden death of a spouse. It is handled with care and respect for all concerned. The detail and depth from all the main players and supporting cast adds understanding and feeling to a complex and emotional story. The author pays great respect to all the players and the nuance and detail they provide.
I loved this book. I love the characters, the world they live in and the detail, passion and pain they show.
I highly recommend this book, series and author

So this is the third book in this series. Carrie did not disappoint on this book. You can feel the emotion that she has put in this book. I really enjoyed this book.

This story is about Marley and Kate! We got Kate who comes into this series as a new character. I really enjoyed her throughout this book. She is 35 years old and she also a widow and a mother of 3. We have James who is 15 years old he was her husband kid and she adopted him when she married his dad. Then we got Ethan who is 8 years old and Addy who is 6 years old. A couple of years ago her husband died unexpectedly and she has done everything by herself. People have offered their help but she wanted to prove them that she can do it by herself.

Marley has a construction company with his twin brother Presley but he is also a firefighter. Two years ago he watch his best friend and boss died. He promise he would take care of his family but it has been hard when Kate won’t let him. Until Kate needs Marley help. They get really close to each other.

If you want to know what happened next you need to read this book!!!

That one heartbreak indeed! This one was emotional and pulled at the heartstrings, a story of grief, friendship, longtime loving (From Marley) and learning to love again (from Kate)
Kate is a single mum of three gorgeous kiddos, a widow trying to juggle her way through life after losing her husband. Marley was Kate’s husband best friend and promised him he would always look after his family. Chemistry between Marley and Kate burned off the pages, but with them both living with guilt of their feelings, it was hard relationship to navigate for them. Big emotional feelings with 3 additional little hearts to consider, but this book still managed to put a smile on my face for their HEA. Really enjoyed this one, as with all the Hartson men, thank you Carrie for another great book.

I voluntarily reviewed a free advance copy of this book provided by the author. The opinions expressed are my own.

Favorite Quotes:

Grief was a strange thing. It ebbed and flowed like the ocean. Sometimes the tide would be so low you barely thought about the loss at all, and then it would come rushing back, a tsunami of remembering.

“I hear he’s single,” Gloria, one of the older stitchers, said. “Think he’d like a cougar?” “The car or the cat?” one of the other ladies asked. “Me, you dumbass.”

He’d come along at the right time, this man they hadn’t realized they needed. He was the final piece of the jigsaw puzzle of their lives. He completed them.

My Review:

I always enjoy picking up a new Carrie Elks book as I always seem to fall into her storytelling as if I’ve been teleported into the quirky little communities she seamlessly creates. Her writing finds that magical balance of humor, romantic chemistry, sizzling sensuality, endearing characters, and descriptive narratives that have me alternating between giggle-snorting, sighing, and gasping while frantically fanning myself.

I thought this was just a lovely story to read. It was sweet and sad, it made me laugh at times and at others want to shed a tear, there was a little bit of angst, a little steam, but mainly this was an easy to read heartwarming and emotional story about two people suffering loss and dealing with the guilt left behind, struggling to move on and find love.
Marley made a promise to his best friend when he died to look after his wife and family, that he'd always been in love with Kate just made that complicated and him guilt ridden. Two years after his death he got his chance, a shot at a future with her, James, Ethan and Addy, but an accident and his guilt nearly blew it all.
The romance was sweet as much as it was two steps forward, one step back for much of the story. Her kids brought so much life, the fun and the drama, to the story and their relationships with Marley was probably the best part of the book.
I enjoyed this a lot.

Another great book in the Heartbreak Brothers next generation series from Carrie Elks.

Kate’s firefighter husband died suddenly in his best friend Marley’s arms. After losing her husband, Kate has been doing all that she can to hold her family together, not wanting help from others, pushing them away.

Her late husband’s best friend promised to look after her, doing so from afar.

A few years later, they are brought together following a situation with Kate’s eldest son, where she slowly lets Marley help.

Kate and Marley have a beautiful chemistry and I love the journey they both go through. One of grief, fear, guilt, friendship and longing. This is a delicately written heartwarming story with moments that will make you laugh and potentially make you shed a tear. Highly recommend.

This is the third book in The Heartbreak Brothers - New Generation series, although it can absolutely be read standalone. It is a fabulous read which contains a number of difficult topics (loss and grief), these are addressed delicately but the author doesn’t shy away from these challenges.

Marley’s best friend Paul, died in his arms, which leaves unresolved guilt; in addition Paul’s widow (Kate) does not want his help, she feels the need to self sufficient. Marley’s guilt isn’t helped by his love for Kate which is neither friendly nor neighbourly.

The characters in this book are amazing, such depth and not just the main characters. It allows the book to weave a complex and emotional storyline, and despite difficult topics, it is an inspiring and uplifting read.

I highly recommend this book, series and author. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

What an absolutely beautiful story this is. I just loved Kate & Marley together, but it was the lead up to them becoming a couple that made this book so special to me.
I don’t want to give the whole storyline away so I’m probably going to be totally vague on details and I will more than likely not make any sense. But here goes….
My heart basically melted into a puddle when Marley revealed how long he’s had feelings for Kate. I loved how he treated her and I especially loved how he was with her children. Then of course the whole stepping back into this magnificent fictional world that Carrie has created and seeing what the previous characters are all up to, makes me feel like I was catching up with my own family.
I know my review has not given the justice this book deserves, it was such a beautiful story and it will definitely demand a reread in the not too distant future.

I’ve always loved Carrie Elks’ Heartson’s Creek series and I’m so glad the kids of the original brothers are all getting their own stories now. In her latest novel, Elks tells the story of Marley and Kate, a firefighter and librarian who’ve known each other a long time because Marley was Kate’s late husband’s best friend. Both battle guilty feelings for wanting each other while also trying to wrangle three kids, keep everyone safe, push each other away, but then oh yeah, fall in love. What I really liked about this book in particular was how Marley faced his own guilt for some many feelings he’d had and been having for Kate, past, present, and future. Watching these two work through it all made my heart smile and me stay up late to see how their love played out. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read Hendrix’s book eventually!

I like this author and enjoy reading her stories..this one was no exception.
She presents good, strong characters and storylines. Set in a small town and hidden feelings, slow burn romance. Kate and Marley have her ex husband in common, as she is the widow of his best friend and mother of 3 children. A promise to look after his family is not that easy to keep. Kate is independent and shuns offers of help, determined to cope alone. Grief and grieving is an underlying issue and forms part of the guilt Marley carries, as he had always been attracted to Kate and is now struggling with his feelings. When they both acknowledge each other, keeping their relationship secret is difficult..small town living mixes with the local gossip where people know your business and there are children to consider. Time to heal, time to live and love.

This heartfelt romance offers a touching journey through loss, healing, and second chances. Kate, a widowed single mom, juggles the chaos of raising three kids, each with their own quirks, while managing her grief. Her late husband’s best friend, Marley, is drawn into their lives to fulfill a promise, but soon finds himself falling for the one woman he swore was off-limits.

The story beautifully captures the complexities of love after loss, balancing Kate’s devotion to her family with her need to move forward. Marley’s steady, protective nature makes him a grounding presence, and their chemistry adds warmth and tension to the narrative. With relatable characters, humor, and tender moments, this book is a sweet and emotional journey, about letting go of the past and finding courage to embrace new beginnings.

I love the entire series, and cannot wait to read it when they are released. I really enjoy Carrie Elis writing style, her characters are relatable and endearing and you cannot wish anything but a HEA for them.
Marley and Kate's story was different in so many ways, she is the widow of his friend.
They each have their own concerns about what the future holds for them. Marley has always had feelings for Kate, her husband even joked with him about it! But he is so concerned about not taking his place he keeps fighting his desire (sometimes failng). Kate however it torn between parenthood, society and her own needs. These battles are so realistic. The best part of the story are the hidden voices of reason who are key to getting everyone to see beyond their fears. Somehow with all these barriers, their feelings do win the day, and we have a HEA!!!

Heartwarming Story
Twenty-four months have passed since Kate Connelly’s husband, Paul, died suddenly. She pushed all his colleagues away after he died. It hurt to see them and she found it impossible to deal with their grief as well as her own and her three kids. Marley Hartson promised Paul he would take care of Kate and their kids and he is determined to keep his promise even if he has to do it behind their backs. This is a well written gripping small town widowed mom romance that brought everything from tears to my eyes to heart palpations to smiles and laughter. The characters are well developed and everyone from the children to family to towns people have a special place in Kate and Marley’s story. Loved it.

4.5 out of 5 stars!

I'm a sucker for small town romances with single parents. Kate Connelly is raising her three children after the death of her husband Paul. While he didn't pass in the heat of a fire, being around his co-workers is difficult. Every time they offer any help, she refuses. Marley Hartson isn't one to give up easily. Kate feels this great need to be self-sufficient. Kate gradually begins to accept help from Marley. It's hard to keep his at arm's length when his help comes at just the right time. Even her children love being around Marley. The attraction between them is evident, but Kate is scared. Marley is patient and helpful, compassionate and kind. He gives her the space and time to come to the same conclusion he has, that she's strong on her own but together they can be stronger.

This story is about loss and grief, two topics that are difficult to comprehend and overcome. The author does a great job of addressing these topics as well as navigating love after loss. While this book is the third in a series, it can be read as a standalone.

The younger generation of the Hartson brothers is back. That One Heartbreak is the newest edition to Carrie Elks' library of wonderful, heartwarming romances. It's the sweet love story of volunteer firefighter Marley Hartson, and Kate Connelly, widow of a firefighter who was also Marley's best friend. They have a couple of hurdles to get over on their way to happy ever after but they do get there. Carrie Elks is a beautiful writer and her characters are genuine and likable, even the children. This heartfelt story of a widowed mom of three, finding love and happiness with the man who has silently loved her from afar, really touched me. I loved it.
