I earned an 85% B grade. Most of the questions were easy, but each quiz had two or three questions that were hard to answer. Sometimes I could deduce the answer correctly from my knowledge, other times not. Some of the hard questions I either knew or did not and blind guessing very occasionally was correct. This book was aimed at Americans and was Western oriented, but did include other parts of the world. I have a good grasp on Non-Western civilizations too, so that was not a problem. I have proven to myself that my history memory is good since, as I said, most questions were easy. Now my high school students on the other hand would not do very well since they seem to be allergic to that dreaded high school vulgar activity i.e. WORK. I have had over the years one handful of high school students that would be willing to challenge themselves with this book, and who then would achieve a decent passing percentage. As the title says, I highly recommend this book to other History Buffs to challenge themselves.
In a good way, this book made honestly assess what areas of history I am most interested in, areas I simply don’t have much knowledge about, and certainly what areas I need to improve. I did keep track of my answers. I never cheated and looked at the answers until it was time to self-grade at the end of each section. I must say I was disappointed in my overall score all in all. Though, I found three truths about my historical knowledge: I did poorly on areas I’d never studied or had much serious interest in, some areas I did better than I thought only because of sheer luck, and finally, I did really well in areas I thought I would but I never got a perfect score in any chapter. So I was humbled, but I learned something for sure. I took this book seriously when I bought it and when I read it. I’m thankful!!
34 quizzes covering almost all of history. There are multiple choice questions and true/false questions. The questions, by the way, are not easy. The best I got was go get 78% right on a quizzes about Politics, the Industrial Revolution and the 1800's.
Layout of book, with pages of questions made me think I had returned to school house and didn’t read my homework. I usually enjoy Bill O’Neill books, not so much this one.
A collection of trivia questions on 34 history topics, some obscure, some memorable. Kind of like doing puzzles: a chapter might take 5 to 10 minutes. Each section (chapter) has 18 multiple choice questions. I got as few as 6, which is barely better than random guessing, but got all 18 on another.
