This book is a well-written, engaging exploration of Irish history that is perfect for those who prefer a concise read over a lengthy tome. It delves into various intriguing aspects of Ireland's past, from the ancient piracy against native Britons and Romans to voter fraud in the 1918 election, where deceased individuals were impersonated at the polls.

As someone with Irish heritage, I found this book particularly enlightening. It provides a succinct yet comprehensive account of Ireland's complex history, capturing the essence of this enchanting island-nation. The narrative spans from Ireland's mysterious ancient structures and Celtic traditions to the Viking settlements, the Anglo-Norman invasion, and the prolonged English occupation, all the way to its modern relationship with Britain.

While the book offers a broad overview, it touches upon many significant events, such as the British-controlled plantations, the devastating famines, and the waves of migration to America. Though it cannot cover every detail due to its brevity, it succeeds in painting a vivid picture of Ireland's evolution over the centuries.

Overall, this book is informative, easy to read, and provides the necessary context to understand the interconnected events in Irish history. It's an excellent starting point for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of Ireland's rich and tumultuous past.

A good, short intro to the history of Ireland. I recommend this to everyone who wants an overview of the long history. By reading this, you'll learn a little bit of everything, and get an idea of which period you'll might want to dig deeper into.
Personally, I already knew most about newer history (1970's - today), and the viking era, and about the famine, but learned some interesting stuff of the history between.

As was the case with the history of the British Empire, this book is good for people who are looking for an overview of Irish history but not for any other purposes. It was easy to read and follow. I was surprised to see nothing of the Irish Rebellion or Cromwell's campaigns in Ireland though.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. There has been a lot of upheavals and hardships by the Irish people. I like that they were able to keep their culture although I wonder what has been lost due to no records being kept long ago.

This is a good book for a quick overview of Irish history, but it isn’t always completely unbiased regarding the history and events of the Irish War of Independence. It uses the British point of view for the narrative through much of the conflict. It also consistently refers to the Irish city of Derry only in the British rebranded title of “Londonderry”, while never denoting the disdain the Irish had for the unneeded and unwarranted renaming. Again, it’s a good overview, but once it gets to the 1916 Easter Rising, it leaves unbiased historical recounting to the side.
