They called it the Shadow War, and it had raged for centuries.
It was a time when magical families fought to tear artifacts and powerful spells from each other's corpses, leaving nothing but death and destruction in their wake. It was brutal, a war waged away from human eyes.
Thirty years ago, the remaining four families came together to sign the Codex Magica Treaty, giving up their most dangerous spells and artifacts as part of the agreement. An uneasy peace was forged.
Though the other families have been quiet for years, my parents remained vigilant, constantly on guard for potential attacks. My younger brother and I have been overprotected all our lives, never allowed to leave our home for fear of what may happen to us, but I long to experience the outside world.
On the eve of my brother's twenty-first birthday, I sneak us both out of the mansion to give him a real taste of freedom. What he doesn't know is that I've already been sneaking out for months to see someone I shouldn't be seeing under any circumstances.
I should've listened to my parents.

Bound by Magic is the first installment in author Katerina Martinez's The Shadow War series. Key Characters: Beatrice Ethera, and Lucien Diaboli. Setting: Boston, Massachusetts, USA. They called it the Shadow War, and it had raged for centuries. It was a time when magical families fought to tear artifacts and powerful spells from each other's corpses, leaving nothing but death and destruction in their wake. It was brutal, a war waged away from human eyes.
I really enjoyed this first book in this new series. Beatrice "Bee" Ethera is part of one of the four magical families left after The Shadow War, a magical war which raged for years before all the families agreed to sign a treaty, effectively ending it all.
Bee and her younger brother have led very sheltered lives, never being allowed out of their house and compound as both they and the world outside are just too dangerous to mix in, but unbeknown to her parents, Bee has been sneaking out of the grounds for quite a while. On her brother's 21st birthday, she takes him with her, not wanting him to have the same boring 21st birthday celebrations that she had to ensure. And this is where everything starts to go wrong for her.
Having lost her way home, she has no other choice but to call her father, but losing her magical artefact has serious consequences, more serious than anyone could have imagined! And everything that follows makes Bee seriously regret her life choices this time!
Now she has to do everything she can to find her brother, stop the crazy, power-hungry head of another family, all while trying to stay alive. Luckily for her, she has an unexpected ally, but can she fully trust him? Seems like she doesn't have much of a choice here either!
I like Bee for the most part - she was a strong willed character, but her immaturity at times really came through her actions. After what had happened in the family home, she seemed to get over things fairly quickly and resorted to having "fun times" with the enemy far too quickly for my liking. I know there needed to be the enemies to lovers trope to move the story and characters on, but she seemed to jump in very quickly! Hopefully in the next book, she will mature a bit more!
Looking forward to reading the next book in this series to see how Bee, Max and Lucien deal with the events of this book and what the families will all do next!
I received an ARC copy of this book from the author, but this review is my own honest one!
📕 Tropes/Themes: 🌷Paranormal Mafia Romance (Mages) 🌷Enemies to Lovers (Rival Families) 🌷Single PoV (First Person) 🌷Forced Proximity + One Bed 🌷FMC 👎 MMC 👎 🌷Dom / Sub (+ Good Girl) 🌷Open Door/Explicit 🌷Spice 🌶️🌶️ 🌷Kindle Unlimited 🌷Seems like part of a series
📕 10% - Sigh. Another silly FMC, great! 🤦🏾♀️
📕 41% - I am finding it really hard to believe that she’s in actual danger when she keeps getting turned on and replaying explicit memories between her and the son of the man who just killed her family and is currently holding her captive while hunting her brother. Also, I am almost half way through the book and Lucien (MMC) has all the personality of a hard boiled egg. Bored.
📕 48% - You know what? Never mind.. *sigh*
📕 54% - 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
📕 86% “I knew our badly timed flirting was going to bite us in the ass someday!”
- Errmm.. no. Just no.
📕 89% - THAT is the idea you cone up with? Destroy the artefact the bad guy wants and hopefully he’ll stop chasing you? Have you ever heard of revenge torture? Why is this supposed adult woman thinking and acting like a hormonal teenage? Poor Max, probably going to lose his life because his sister is a dunce. *pops a grape into mouth*
📕 91% - Obviously it hasn’t occurred to them that there would be guards or, I don’t know, some sort of surveillance on the place that holds that artefact that the bad man is salivating over. Honestly you keep saying (and want me to believe) that this man is evil and would do everything - "even chase you to the end of the world” - to get what he wants and yet you keep treating him like some Scooby Doo villain. Aren’t you even slightly suspicious about the fact that no one chased after you or even tried to stop you? Didn't you think it was too easy ESPECIALLY for a desperate, barely thought out and put together plan? And even if, yes, it serendipitously was successfully, you head straight to your brother who has been safe all this time and you claim to want to protect? What about laying low for some time first so you don't bring trouble to his safe house? Also LEAVE THE DAMN ARTEFACT IN THE SAFE WHERE IT IS SAFE AND HAS BERN SAFE ALL THIS TIME! JUST LEAVE IT THE HELL ALONE AND LEAVE. As long as you're gone, he can't open the safe so leave. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH *pulling out my hair*
📕93% “I should’ve known. We had escaped too easily”
- *eye twitching*
📕93% “Oh, you thought I didn’t know? That I wouldn’t notice the sneaking around, the voids in the security streams, the magic cast in my own house?!”
- You and me mate! You. And. Me!!!! 😌
📕94% “Do you really think you can destroy the engine by hurling it into the ground?” He laughed, and he took the crown from Carla’s hands and placed it on his head. “Stronger men than you have tried to destroy the engine, all of them have failed. Why do you think the dead Ethera decided to keep it in this vault?”.
- Again, even I figured this much out. These MCs are silly. Both of them! That makes them perfect for each other at least. imagine a great MMC being saddled with this FMC. It wouldn't be fair to him.
📕98% Of course they somehow ended up victorious despite all the many odds they helped stack against themselves. Main character plot armour in effect once again. What was it Professor McGonagall said? - “Sheer dumb luck”
🌷 Overall Rating: 1 ⭐️ The blurb of this book had me excited. The book fell WAAY short. FMC seesawed between silly to horny. Those were her two states in every given moment. There was no depth to the characters and so I couldn’t sink into the story. And I kept reading hoping that this would change before the end of the book: it didn’t.
Her parents were murdered and her younger brother is missing, her whole life was upended and all that. I would take her crying and shut down, lifeless over what we got. Did I even mention that the villains were only able to kill her family because she lost the artefact that allowed them to breach her father's defences in the first place? And was she sorry, remorseful? No of course not, it was her parents' fault for keeping her sheltered and protected from the outside world all this time. It was also their fault that she snuck out every week to go clubbing and to keep her rendezvous in the grimy club bathroom every week with the bad boy whose name she didn't even know.
And yeah, there are some dom type tingle moments as you would expect from a mafia type book but I didn’t get the tingles at all because - WOW! She’s simpering about ordering room service lobster less than a week after her parents were murdered by her captors. In cold blood. In front of her. I just can’t wrap my head around this so - NO!
I think because I enjoyed “The Coldest Fae” series (read years ago), I had high hopes for this too. 🤷♀️
Seems like it’s going to be a series. Tapping out! ✌️
Welcome one and all to this wonderful new world. Dive right into supernatural mafia wars extraordinaire. Meet Bee- our spunky, determined, fierce, loyal, yet sheltered FMC as her *entire* world is about to change. There is oodles of intrigue, of course magic, action, adventure, sexy time...oooh la la, and magical star crossed lovers within these pages. The world building grabbed me from the get go. I mean what's *not* to love about magical mafia families at war with lots of secrets? Not to mention star crossed children from said families full of rebellion along the way 😉. Lucien and Bee get thrown in the proverbial fire fast. It's sink or swim for these two, and boy was it fun seeing which way that turned out. The characters were all layered, complex and oh so full of color. To say they kept my interest was an understatement. Get ready for an adrenaline packed, magic filled, spicy delight. I *highly* recommend this gem!!!!! Hopefully we will get more to come in this exciting series.
I really enjoyed this story – Wow was it intense. Beatrice comes from a magic family and has been mostly hidden from humans her whole life – never allowed to experience life like a normal person. She inherited an amulet from a family member which was hidden away from her, but she managed to get ahold of it to use to go out partying in Boston.
On her brothers 21st birthday, she decides to take him with her so he can have a REAL birthday, but things go horribly wrong. After breaking it off with the guy she had been hooking up with at the club, she notices that her amulet is gone. And this is when everything goes to hell. Even with all the protections that her family has, a rival family has discovered it (the hook up guy is actually the son of that family and they both never knew) and uses it to destroy her family. She is able to get her brother to safety, but she has to use her “skills” to help this other family out.
I really like the story and plot line. I thought the whole thing was fascinating. I cant wait to see what happens next.
Book one of this new series and it is incredible! From the get go, I found myself hooked and unable to stop reading as the author weaves their magic and lures us into this magical, paranormal world. A shadow war is brewing between the magical families who have had a truce for decades in this exciting and enthralling read where we meet Bee, our fmc has been bought up by overprotective parents who are always on the look out for trouble and all she wants is to go out into the real world despite all of the dangers that she has been warned about. Does this stop her? Hell no, rules are made for breaking and this fast paced and intense read is gripping as we are introduced to unknown magicks and different and intriguing supernatural beings. Fantastical world building, likeable and relatable characters and a captivating storyline that has you eager for more from this world. I cannot wait to read more!
I confess, the cover appealed to me so I read it. It took a few pages to get settle in for the ride.
Many a parent have done their utmost to protect and shelter their offspring - not just human parents. I felt for their father, in particular, when he realised that they had 'broken' his rules.
Then there is Lucien who just needed someone to believe in him and, I guess, anchor him to find his role in life.
There are times when Bee annoyed me, and things happen quickly but so does life.
I look forward to the next book & I will definitely be reading earlier books by this author…

3.5 rounded up. This is a light read mainly centered on magic families who feuded 30 years and the grown kids from those families dealing with the repercussions. Without giving spoilers Bee wants to take her brother out to celebrate his 21st birthday, both kids have been sheltered from going outside their families mansion so this is breaking all kinds of rules for them. Bee messes up and yeah the good times start. This is on the lighter side with some action, romance and spice. Some of the line are OTT but that makes it fun. Bee & Lucien This is one up and down magical story! Bee and Lucien get together with no names exchanged. Then on Max's 21st birthday all of their worlds change. As the story progresses Bee and Lucien become closer and trust is built between them. Mason is a horrible person, Lucien's father, really bad dude! The story is full of danger and darkness, but there is a HEA in the future. You have to red it to know. Now, No Spoilers, I did Love it!!! I received an ARC from the Author and I am Leaving this Totally Honest Review because I choose to and Loved this Story!!!
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer...
Bee just wanted to be a good sister and take her little brother out on his 21st birthday. There was no way she could have predicted who the shadow man she hooked up with would turn out to be, or that her innocent plan for an evening of fun with her brother would result in the slaughter of her parents and being captured by the killers.
Now Max is lost in the Ether, and Bea must cooperate with their enemies to retrieve a lost artefact and restart an ancient war...
This book kept me on my toes and I didn't want to put it down. Bee and her brother Max have led a very sheltered life and don't really understand all that is going on in the magical world around them. Adding handsome Lucian to the mix makes things even crazier. This book was a roller coaster of wonderful characters and a story that kept me wanting more. I'm looking forward to reading more books in this series.

Maybe somebody would have uncontrollable sexual desire shortly after their parents were murdered in front of them, while their brother is still missing, during their own imprisonment and with a guy from the family doing the murdering…but I doubt it. I feel like there might be other things on your mind at such a time. And, since the main character did act like that, she was certainly a character with which I could not emotionally connect.
Bound by Magic is Book 1 in the Shadow War Series and is Romeo and Juliet take on magic families who have been feuding for 30 years and kids dealing with the repercussions. It's a fast paced read with wonderful characters and worldbuilding. I have loved Katerina Martinez's books for years and I can't wait to read more!

This book is so original! I loved the whole magical mafia spin, and the steam factor? Keep a fire extinguisher handy! I love that this is an anthology, and can be enjoyed as a stand alone book. The characters draw you in and keep you invested until the end. If you enjoy action packed, fast moving, sexy, magical stories, you really should give this book a read!
As with all of Katerina Martinez novels, I fell into a world other than ours, A realm full of life, love, hate and war. The ethera, another magickal part of the Katerinaverse I have loved for years. The flow of the plot takes the reader into that other realm seamlessly. No spoilers, just awe and gratitude for the best ride into another magickal world.
