At the edge of a cliff, in the pouring rain, the man I once loved attacks me. His fingers tear at my flesh, his breath hot in my ear as he spews venomous words of hate and promises of death.
My only hope is Scythe. The psychopath locked away inside the mind of another. Letting him out will only cause chaos and violence. And yet, I utter his name and free him to save myself.
Scythe is nothing like Vincent. He’s dark. Sarcastic. Sexy. The things he makes me do are wickedly sinful.
But secret.
Nash and War don’t know what I’ve done. If they knew Scythe’s true identity and the crimes he’s committed, they’d kill him in a heartbeat.
I can’t let that happen. The empire I’m building can’t crumble.
Not when I need it to save my family from the streets. Not when half the battle is keeping my head while my heart is split between three men.
Not when the real killer is still out there, ready to ruin it all.
Half the Battle is an adult #whychoose romance, meaning the main character has more than one love interest. This book contains romantic suspense/dark themes that may trigger some readers. It contains a male/male storyline. It is the second book in an ongoing trilogy and cannot be read as a standalone. Book 1 of this series is Start A War.
USA Today Bestselling author Elle Thorpe is the author of over thirty romance titles, including Amazon top ten books, Start a War and Locked Up Liars. She is best known for her dark reverse harems, and sexy small town romances.
When she's not writing, she's probably out on her family's alpaca farm in rural Australia.
The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: 💙❤️💜 Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📘 World building: 🌏🌍🌏 Character development: 😊😘😟 Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙 Narration Type: Duet Narration
The heroine:Bethany Melissa (a.k.a. Bliss) - she was born in the slums of Saint View. When she was five, her brother Axel and his friend Nash got her out of there and away from her mother and stepfather by contacting her wealthy father. After that she grew up in his world, but after Axel was recently murdered and left his bar and illegal sex club to Bliss, she has become the owner. She wants to find out who killed Axel and needs the money that the sex club brings for her family and her younger siblings since her father is bankrupt.
The Heroes:Nash, War & Vincent - the new men in Bethany’s life. Nash - The manager of Saint View Psychos, a dive bar in the slums. He has known Bliss since she was very young. He was the best friend of her brother and though Axel is dead, he doesn’t want to disrespect him by hooking up with her. War - he is the president of the Saint View Slayers motorcycle club, since his father was murdered by an assassin named Scythe. He is a bit obsessed with Bliss but doesn’t do relationships. Vincent - he works as a bouncer at Saint View Psychos, he has dissociative identity disorder, and his other personality is an assassin named Scythe. He is very protective of Bliss.
The Story: Bliss is attracted to all three of the new men in her life and is slowly starting to get to know each of them. She is in a world of danger, secrets and lies now and is trying to find her way. Her junkie mother makes a comeback. She also gets to know Scythe, who I liked quite a bit. He was completely different than Vincent. Scythe was snarky and irreverent while Vincent was quiet and awkward.
The intimate scenes were super steamy and even included a budding romance between Scythe and War. Though there were too many for my liking. I like a bit more story along with my steamy scenes. I thought I may not go further to the next book because too many sex scenes were starting to bore me. I do want to find out what happens to these characters so I will listen to the last audiobook and just fast forward parts. I just wish a bunch of the steamy scenes would have been cut and then this could have been a duet instead of a trilogy. There was a really good cliffhanger at the end, so I am hoping the next book is better than this one.
This audiobook was done in multiple points of view via duet narration. It was narrated by Michelle Price and Gregory Salinas. Michelle isn’t one of my favorite narrators, though she is good at showing anxiety through her voice. Gregory Salinas has a deep, yet soft voice which I really enjoy.
Half the Battle is book two in the Saint View Psychos series by Elle Thorpe. Once again, we are taken on a crazy, wild ride from start to finish! Note that the three books in this series must be read in order. They do not stand alone.
Our four main characters are changing so much. Bliss has gotten so much stronger. She is carrying such a heavy load on her shoulders. She wants to help her father and his family with his financial issues. She wants the bar to succeed not only for that but to help all the employees. And even though her mother has done nothing but hurt her when she was little, she still loves her and I am shocked at her ability to forgive. Her ex, Caleb, is the bad guy in this story. He has hurt her in so many ways and his ability to wreak havoc in the lives of our main characters continues. On top of everything, she still doesn’t know who murdered her brother and she has to plan the funeral.
Scythe, Vincent’s alter ego, has arrived and wow! Where Bliss was drawn to sweet Vincent, she can’t resist this outgoing, dirty talking scoundrel, Scythe. And I really liked that we saw his heart as well! He feels so much and I loved the connections that were forming. But his manipulative mom continues to ruin his happiness.
War is also going through so much. He is now the president of his club. Even if he doesn’t really want it. And, he’s dealing with the connections he is also feeling for our main characters. But, the first order of business on a new president’s shoulders is to punish whoever took out the previous president who just happens to be War’s father.
And then there is Nash. Nash who has fought his attraction to Bliss all along, feeling like he was too old for her and that since she’s the little sister of his now deceased best friend, Axel, that it means hands off. But he can only hold out for so long.
What I loved is the character development of these four people. War is really learning to listen to his heart. Bliss is so much stronger. And Scythe/Vincent is changing so much. There are MANY secrets revealed in this one! My one complaint in all of this is that I’m not feeling the emotional connection between them as strongly as I did in the previous trilogy, Saint View Prison. It’s growing stronger but by the end of the second book, I would have enjoyed it more if there had been some verbal declarations made by now. I think the ending of this one is the craziest so far! My heart was beating out of my chest. I was SHOCKED! So, I’m typing this as fast as I can so I can start the final book, It Ends With Violence! So off I go!
I found this one to be much slower than the first one. All of the relationships happened too fast and there was nothing else going on for most of the story so I found myself getting bored a lot. I also didn’t like how the FMC went about her relationships with the guys. She had this carefree “I’ll sleep with whomever I want” attitude, which I’m all for, but it came off like all they were doing is having fun and that they could all be with whoever they wanted. For me, it made their connections feel disingenuous and it’s just not my thing in a romance. Along with that, how Scythe and War went about hooking up felt like cheating to me. It almost felt like a secret, behind her back. Which I know is a me thing because like I said, they had a talk about not being monogamous and this is a why choose but I don’t think she would be that okay with it if is was with another woman.
So I enjoyed this way more than the first book and I do think that was probably because of Scythe I just adored him. His one-liners snarky comebacks and observations were all hilarious and he was definitely the main star of this series for me.
As for the rest of this, it was entertaining and I like Bliss a whole lot more especially as she's now lost the kicked puppy persona. I'm now intrigued to discover what happens next mostly because of that action-packed ending I'm also slightly scared at what this may mean for Scythe going forward.
Im going to be reading the conclusion as I'm invested in the outcome and though this hasn't been a full sweep in regards to ticking all of my boxes it's still a decent enough read.
Well well well...... we're still on a ride here. Can't really write a review because I can't give away all of the surprises. I'll do my best.
Bliss is jumping feet first into the drug dealing/sex club running world that she inherited from her brother, Axel. Considering she's just recently left the country club life, it's not exactly an easy transition, so she makes a ton of mistakes. She hits a speedbump when her ex comes back and attacks her.... again. This causes our sweet boy, Vincent, to let out his other half. Welcome to our world, Scythe. Anyway - a whole bunch of shit happens, two of the men in Bliss's life become very friendly, Bliss's empire is threatened, several folks find themselves in arranged marriages, Nash may or may not give into his desires for Bliss, mysteries still revolve around who killed Axel and who killed War's dad, Bliss trusts the wrong person, a few "mommy dearests" pop up, War clashes with some of his friends, Rebel is still crazy, and of course - we end on a cliffy.
So, I'm still invested, but more things are pissing me off.
Bliss: Ugh.... this girl is trying my nerves!!! Sometimes, she'll be cool as hell, then she'll do or say something and I just want to punch the shit out of her. Her insecurities are getting annoying. Sure, they may be valid, but in a book you can only handle so much repeat. The thing that pisses me off the MOST is that any time she finds out something unsavory about one of the guys, she gets all pissy about it, but the biggest person she shouldn't forgive, she gets all sympathetic for. I literally hate her mom and would NEVER forgive her. I mean - I wouldn't actively try to hurt the woman, but I wouldn't be holding her hand, either. Ugh. All of that said - Ms. Dess tells me I'm too quick to judge and that if I'll chill, things will all work out. She's usually right, so I'll keep trusting her.
Sex: This f*cking author... She has become the QUEEN of edging and sex scene interruptions!!! Nearly every start of a sexual escapade gets interrupted at some point. Ms. Dess loves to be sexually frustrated, personally, I do not. There are some steamy scenes, but not nearly enough for me to be happy. Man... that M/M scene (without penetration) had me drooling. That was so freaking good.
Vincent/Scythe: I know we all absolutely LOVE Vincent from Book 1, and this book is all Scythe. I was really upset about the switch, but you fall in love with Scythe just as much. I think the personalities will merge at some point, but I'm not sure how that will work. I have faith it will work out.
Caleb: For whatever stupid reason, the author decided to add a chapter with his POV. I don't understand it, and I hate it. He also gets his own POV in the next book too. Ugh.
Audio: Man - the FMC's narration has a terrible "O" voice. It'll grate on your nerves, but you can probably handle it.
elle thorpe literally never misses with her books. i swear they have crack in them because i can never put them down. this book picks up exactly where start a war left off and i honestly loved that we got scythe instead of vincent in this book. don’t get me wrong, i love socially awkward and protective vincent, but scythe is something else entirely and it is phenomenal! i did feel like we didn’t get as much in this story about discovering who axel’s killer is, but instead got more of how war, scythe, nash, and bliss all work together. and honestly i didn’t mind the smaller amount of plot in this book simply because i wanted more RH action! it was steamy, hot, and so so spicy; elle never disappoints with her spicy scenes. i do wish we had gotten more of nash and bliss because brother’s best friend is so hot to me, but i have a feeling we will see more of that in book 3! this book was a really coaster of emotions, elle really knows how to throw her readers for a loop and play with our emotions. as always, their is a cliffhanger to this book that has me counting down the days until book 3 releases! there is so many things that need to be resolved in the third book, but i have no doubt that elle will release a beautiful conclusion to this book.
“don’t talk about your thighs like they’re anything other than my favorite thing to get between.”
What the fuck?!?!?! Why did SO MUCH happen at the VERY end?? Talk about a cliffhanger!! Like first, Bliss finds out about Nash’s past. Then, War finds out Scythe’s identity 😞. BUT, we learn the truth about the night War’s father died. And then of course, War goes after Scythe, but then the cops and the prison warden show up at Psychos😭😭. So that means Nash, Bliss, and everyone else are in trouble because of ALL THE DRUGS!!! And now we have to worry about Scythe and Vincent with the crazy Warden.
But before all that crazy stuff happened, there was actually good stuff. Like seeing Scythe’s personality. Not necessarily the crazy part, but the funny and sarcastic side. War and Bliss’ relationship progressing. Scythe and War flirting and having their own spicy times with and without Bliss. Nash finally giving in to his feelings for Bliss.
Now, I cannot believe I’m going onto the final book!!! Like it’s gonna be CRAZY 🫣🫣. But I can’t wait to get answers about Axel’s killer, seeing Vincent again hopefully with Scythe too, seeing if the cops found about the club, the situation with the drug dealer, how Bliss is going to handle the truth about Nash’s past, Bliss’ mom, Caleb’s fate, if War will forgive Scythe/Vincent, and literally anything else 🙌🙌.
Favorite quotes/scenes:
“They’re probably at our houses right now, waiting to arrest us.” (Bliss) “Yours maybe. Not mine. The police have no record of me, and they’re so incompetent they couldn’t find their way out of a paper bag.” Vincent roared in my head so loudly I winced. “Jeez, fine. That was bad form. I apologize. Don’t worry about the police. Caleb won’t say anything. Or I’ll kill him. It’s really very simple math, Bliss. Now, how about some nuggies?” (Scythe)
“Little Dog will be just fine. I’ll even give her some water.” I nodded, satisfied he wasn’t going to try to kill Vincent’s dog while I had my back turned. “Just enough to drown in.” “Scythe!” “It was a joke! Jesus, you’re as boring as Vincent is.”
“I missed you.” (War) “You only saw me a few days ago.” (Bliss) “Yeah, but I want to see you every day. You can’t blow my mind the way you did the last few times we’ve been together, then cut a guy off. He’ll go through Bliss withdrawals. And there’s no rehab for that, except for the one between your legs.” (War)
“Can we just keep doing what we’re doing? I like you. I want to get to know you better. And just so you know, I’m so fucking attracted to you that if you say no, I’m gonna be stalking your social media for photos of you to jerk off over.”
“War is such a tattletale. So a guy jumps a secure fence and watches his boss get her pussy licked by a biker. Is that really such a crime?” (Scythe) “You are such a pervert!” (Bliss) “I am? Or you are? You were the one writhing around in the dirt, begging him to pound you with his trouser snake.” (Scythe)
“What the hell are you doing back there anyway? How did you even get in? Jesus Christ, Scythe. I nearly peed myself!” (Bliss) “Please refrain from urinating while I’m in the car. That’s truly disgusting.” (Scythe 🤦♀️🤣)
4.4 stars. This was a little harder for me to get through. And I’m blaming my mood. It just changed 30 something percent in, and then kept changing for Days.
I’m glad I got through it finally. That ending was so dramatic and if the last book wasn’t out already when I’m reading this, I’d be Stressing.
I like how things are progressing, but I’m worried about how things are gonna end up because with what’s happened right now, I can’t see a way out.
Which, I think is what I felt about the last series I read from this author, so fingers crossed they all figure it out in ways that are satisfying.
This one felt a little too slow. The first book was slow to start but we were getting a lot of information on the characters and getting to know them so it made sense. With this one, though, it just felt like the story was being stalled and not enough was happening
Book two is way better than book one, especially with War and Scythe. They were so steamy.
They were a lot of multi layered storyline happening at the same time with a lot of unanswered questions.
While listening to the audio, there is a lot of laughing and giggling constantly throughout the book. It was a little annoying. After every line, a character will laugh. It was a little weird.
I loved that this picked up right where the first book left off. Bliss, War, Scythe, Vincent, and Nash take you on a rollercoaster of emotions in this book. This book is hot, steamy and fantastic. You get so many answers to questions you had from book one. But, you are also left with so many more questions you need answered.
Fudge that ending, my heart us in my stomach! Eeekk I need answers. So my h unfolded at the end. I’m nervous and have no idea how this will wrap up! Sooooo good! Elle Thorpe is incredible!!! A must devour!
Vincent was one of my favs from the Saint View Prison series but Scythe (Vincent's cocky bloodthirsty Alta Ego) my god that man burnt a hole through my kindle he was that hot!! It was good to get to know him better i thought. As well as developing his relationship with Bliss, Nash and War. I also liked the fact that for a contract/serial killer Scythe was really funny. The banter that he had with Bliss and War had me giggling so much. Phew but Scythe and War............far too hot!! It was the plot twists in this book that literally gave me whiplash what with keeping up with them they were that good. That cliffhanger ending was epic too!! I cant praise this series up enough. Ill be on tenterhooks until September now waiting for the next book to come out
Honestly DNF’d this pretty quick. I tried really hard to like these books, the first one honestly wasn’t that great but I thought I’d try to push on for the second one… it didn’t work out.
“There’s a little psychopath in all of us. I wear mine on my sleeve. Most people keep theirs buried. You just let yours out to play for a moment. I liked her. Psycho Bliss with blood on her hands was sexy as hell.” 🏍 Review: Half The Battle by Elle Thorpe. Saint View Psychos trilogy, book 2. 🖤 My head is exploding! Honestly! Things pick up right where “Start a War” ended… and let me tell you, while Vincent is temporary gone, I’m have too much fun with Scythe, his psychopath alter ego… what that does say about me? I might have a bit of psycho in me too. Well, who read this book probably know that this quote could’ve more than one meaning hehe. Sorry.
I felt that for a part of this second book, the road to find out who is the killer was put on hold, while Bliss, Nash, War and Vincent/Scythe discovered each other and all the combinations they could participate. Being a 100% clear, it was steamy, hot, fire and all together. Tell all have a great connection between them and I enjoyed the friendship and the banter they had.
Elle played with my emotions so well…. I felt angry, mad, sad… wanted to cry and then I was grinning in the most inopportune time. I was feeling hot and bothered, ready for some cold shower, and then my heart was being ripped from my body.
There’s plenty of things yet to happen in book 3, I seriously don’t know how she’ll unravel that shocking cliffhanger. I know she will fix it, in the best Elle way to do it, but I’m like: how??? Because like Scythe, I wake up and choose violence. Over the mysteries of this trilogy I have some high contender theories. Can’t wait to see how out of base at my predictions I am.
War: Bliss allowed to come visit me now, Dad? Scythe: It's Daddy to you.
Giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because the plot is a bit all over the place but... let's be honest, the plot is not the reason why you pick up this book, the reason is SCYTHE. Yeah the smut is ok, the smut is fine, but SCYTHE. AND WAR. BUT MAINLY SCYTHE. I would let this man carve mE UP.
Scythe's best hits:
"She jokes. She's not funny, but we let her think she is." Scythe elbowed the guy, his eyes darkening. "So laugh."
"So a guy jumps a secure fence and watches his boss get her p*ssy licked by a bicker. Is that really such a crime?"
"You need to be right here so I can tell you every time the book was different than the movie." "So what are we watching?" "Little Women," Scythe announced.
3.5 stars: Oh, Scythe/ Vincent - just adorable, where Vincent is polite, considerate and a bit closed off, Scythe is unapologetic, straight to the point and rather snarky. Loved both personalities and Bliss seems to be of a similar mindset.
Bliss has really made quite a turn here and I have to say I like her more now. Quite a few twists here, but unfortunately still no information as to what happened to Axel. The relationships definitely do develop and War... he has some choices to make.
There are some answers here, but still it appears that the main villains are unknown though I do have some suspicions. I do not know why they left Caleb alive, he is really infuriating.
I am interested to see where this leads and after that ending I hope the last book provides some much needed answers.
Ugh, I said I wasn't going to pick up this book because I just couldn't get into the first, but damn....this took a HUGE 180 and holy crap did this series redeem itself. It's so different than the first, I can't even see how they were written for the same audience, but I loved the second one and look forward to the next one now.
Final rating: 4.5 stars I highly recommend this trilogy and audiobook (in duet narration). Dark why choose, highly entertainning, very spicy, swords crossing and overall interesting characters. Can't wait for book 3. This one didn't quite make it to 5 stars compared to the first one, but still had a lot of fun listening to it.
Damn the spice really stepped up 17 notches didn’t it?! Still enjoying the story, BUT Nash calling Bliss “Blissy girl” is a high key ick. Like you’re fucking her, why are you giving her a horse nickname?? And WHERE is the protection??? Miss girl is getting absolutely railed by 3 dudes every other chapter and ZERO mention of bc or use of anything?? I stg if there’s a surprise baby 🙄 ALSO the ending?? Kinda random but ok. On to the next! 4/5 stars
Holy hell. Just when I think I have this book figured out there’s a twist I didn’t see coming. HIGHLY recommend the audiobook for this one! Duet style with multiple point of views and TONS of smutty smut 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️- cannot wait to start the 3rd book.
