Understanding Our Jewish Neighbors

This is the second book in the series developed and sponsored by The Widtsoe Foundation to help Latter-day Saints understand the religious traditions of their neighbors, their community, and the religious world.

In the spirit of mutual discipleship to that God whom we honor and share together as ‘people of the Book’ from the time and lineage of Father Abraham, Rabbi Mark S. Diamond and Latter-day Saint scholar Shon D. Hopkin bring you Understanding Our Jewish Neighbors, a comprehensive guide to understanding the similarities and differences between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and leading Jewish traditions. This will give readers a succinct understanding, reverence, and appreciation for both faiths, their traditions, and their members.

“What we have in common is of far greater significance than that which divides us. The effort to throw off traditions of distrust and pettiness and truly see one another with new eyes—to see each other not as aliens or adversaries but as fellow travelers, brothers and sisters, and children of God—is one of the most challenging while at the same time most rewarding and ennobling experiences of our human existence.”

(President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, April 24, 2015, at the John A. Widtsoe Symposium at the University of Southern California)

As we grow to understand others, we can better understand ourselves. This book offers a good look at the Jewish faith in comparison to the Latter Day Saint Faith. It examined the traditions and doctrine of the Jewish faith. Discusses differences and how to have an interfaith dialogue. It includes lists of terminology, important figures, and suggestions for additional reading. A wonderful guide.

I received an ARC Advanced Reader Copy from the publisher however the opinions are my own.

This is a great resource for the topic. I especially love that it is written together by a Latter-day Saint and a Rabbi. They each write together and then also separately throughout the book. It's unique and extremely helpful to hear from and understand both perspectives! I recieved an advance copy of Understanding our Jewish Neighbors but these words and thoughts are my own.

I found this enlightening. I believe a second reading may be necessary for me because there's so much there. It will be a good resource because of the appendices. I was surprised at how diverse the Jewish religion is. I loved reading about the similarities and contrasts between our religion and Judaism.

This is such a helpful little volume of information! In just 208 kindle pages, there is so much covered to explain the Jewish religion, culture and people. I especially love the Charts and glossaries at the back that sum so much up in an easy to understand format. This book can be a valuable tool in helping to have interfaith conversations with our Jewish friends, to understand and support them and hopefully not to offend or make as many awkward situational mistakes (like, if you're eating together, being more familiar with their dietary laws).

I received an ARC ebook from Cedar Fort publications to read & review. All opinions expressed in this review are mine.
