I've been dabbling in pottery for five years now but am still very much a beginner. However I have enough knowledge and experience to really understand the concepts in this book and I found it very useful. It's a short book which covers all the fundamentals of pottery - to convert clay (possibly sourced from your garden!) into a pot. In between there are lots of hints to help and pitfalls to avoid from an obvious expert. For such a practical and manual process, the author skillfully explains each step clearly, though on occasion, I felt a few more photographs or diagrams with annotation would have helped. But these are minor criticisms. I found the book to be very helpful and is an excellent accompaniment to practising the art of throwing a pot.
Kendyl Arden’s Centered is a very well-written book with easy flow and cadence. The book in and of itself was very well organized starting with the basics and going all the way into starting your own art studio. As a ceramics teacher, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found it incredibly helpful and will be using it as a supplemental textual reference to my teaching. The way the book is organized, it is a great asset to have to support what I am physically teaching in my class and what the students are learning. I also find it helpful to have a supplemental reference to help explain to my students what I am demonstrating in my class. Also, I found this book to be incredibly resourceful and helpful in the creation of my own, personal, home arts studio. The book gives you step by step things that you need to consider when setting up your home studio as well as how things should be done in the classroom. I highly recommend this book, and since I have read it, I find myself going back to it quite frequently as a refresher. In fact, I have already recommended this book to all of my students and friends.
This is a very well written and easy to understand overview of the pottery/ceramics process. A quick read that touches on each stage and aspect of the pottery world.
