Karen Rose knows how to hook readers with a prologue and keep them engaged throughout a novel. Cheater , the second book in her San Diego Case Files series, is no different. It combines a police procedural with a hint of romantic suspense. Featuring homicide detective Kit McKittrick and criminal psychologist and profiler Dr. Sam Reeves, the story is a great crime thriller that keeps readers on an emotional rollercoaster.

Kit and Connor are called to the Shady Oaks Retirement Village where a resident’s body was found stabbed and his apartment ransacked. It turns out that Sam volunteers there by playing the piano and taking song requests. Kit and Sam met in book one in the series, but Kit has been avoiding him. Now, with his rapport within the retirement community, they find themselves working together once again.

Kit and Sam are both likeable and relatable characters. Kit is focused, dedicated, hardworking, and is a rising star in the homicide department with her high closure rate. She loves the water and lives on a boat she’s renting from an older brother along with her poodle, Snickerdoodle. While she occasionally helps one of her foster sisters with her charter fishing business on weekends, she’s mainly solving crimes with the San Diego Police Department along with her new partner Detective Connor Robinson. She’s fearful of a romantic relationship, feels things deeply, and often puts up a wall between herself and others.

Sam has a private practice, but also works part-time with the police as a profiler. He’s kind, calming, compassionate, patient, observant, trustworthy, and has a soothing way about him. He’s also good at getting people to talk. While both go through transformations during the story, there’s still room for these dynamic characters to continue to grow in future books. The supporting characters have varying depths, but provide support or conflict to enrich the reading experience. It was great to see Harlan, Betsy, and Rita again and catch up with them.

The writing is fluid and descriptive which helps readers envision the scenes without disrupting or slowing the flow. It’s well-plotted with a few twists, and the storyline is gripping at times and heartwarming at other times. Add to that plenty of conflict and a strong but vulnerable protagonist who has a keen sense of justice, and readers will be on the edge of their seats. The ending brings several surprises and plenty of action. Themes include foster care, elder care, adoption, trust, found family, greed, murder, secrets, grief, curiosity, friendship, volunteerism, and much more.

Overall, this was intriguing, entertaining, suspenseful, and had an action-packed ending with compelling characters that kept me turning the pages. With exciting scenes and a fascinating story line, this fantastic thriller kept me fully engaged. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series. As a police procedural and murder mystery, this was great. Will the romance finally take off in book three?

Great murder mystery but that romance cannot be any slower 🙃
~~~~~~~~~~~
One thing to know about this author is that she writes long stories. But the cool thing about it is the plot engages you enough that the story moves rather quickly.
Cheater has a lot of different plot twists, some of which you see coming, but many are a surprise that adds layers to the story. Just when we think we’re figuring something out about the murder mystery, Rose adds another twist, and off we go in another direction.
This book has a lot of unique characters that add dimension and texture to the story. I did have some love-hate moments with the characters and with parts of the plot as well.
Sam is a sweet man, but he certainly has the patience of Job. Kit is great at her job but is absolutely terrified of any type of feelings. This makes the “romance“ in the story nonexistent.
We feel the tension and the yearning but it’s a bit wild that the term romantic suspense is how this book is classified because if you’re looking for romance in the story, you’re not going to find it.
If you’re classifying how good the book is in terms of the police procedural and murder mystery then I thoroughly enjoyed it. It has a big range of quirky characters, annoying characters, and a good balance of everything else besides the romance.
Overall, Cheater is a multi-dimensional book with a plot that is highly engaging and well-developed. The twists and turns alone make it well worth the read.
I’m a longtime fan of this author, I’ve given many of her books a 5 star rating. However, I can’t in good conscience award this particular story the same rating. How can this rightly be called romantic suspense if the romance is nonexistent? There is not even a kiss until the very end of the book.
I was not hooked or invested in this story, and didn’t mind putting my kindle down to take breaks. The book moved very slowly for both the investigation and the romance. I would also say it was very repetitive, especially in the first half of the book.
Overall, if you’re looking to read something in this authors collection, this would not be the series I recommend. Go for the Sacramento series, much more suspenseful and addicting of a read.
Thank you to the publisher for the gifted ARC
This is an entertaining, well-written, fast paced, psychological thriller. It has a likable, intelligent, strong and capable female protagonist, murder, mystery, intrigue, suspense, delightful seniors, twists and turns, a touch of romance, and a satisfying conclusion. This is the second entry in Ms. Rose's outstanding Sand Diego series, and it can be read as a stand alone, but it is better when read in order for continuity, as there are references to past events and relationships.
CHEATER by Author Karen Rose is the second book in the San Diego Case Files and the twenty-ninth book in the Romantic Suspense series. Readers met the main characters in the first book COLD BLOODED LIAR, and while surprised, I was glad to see Kit and Sam's story continue. For fans who may fear picking this one up without having read book one, you'll have no issue as Rose is meticulous in providing enough backstory for readers to jump in at any point.
Det. Kit McKittrick and her partner, Connor, are called to the affluent Shady Oaks retirement facility when a resident is found stabbed to death. When it's discovered the victim was a former decorated police officer who's apparently been murdered over a discovery he made, things quickly escalate. Psychologist Dr. Sam Reeves assists in the investigation as he has an established rapport with several of the patients as both a volunteer and doctor. The only one unhappy to see him is Kit as she continues denying her feelings and holding him at bay. A second untimely death ramps up the urgency along with the discovery of a major theft. There's a killer targeting patients at the retirement home, and Kit is determined to identify them before another life is lost. It's clear someone connected to the home is running an elaborate scheme and profiting off the citizens, then killing when in danger of discovery. Unfortunately, Kit and her team run into one dead end after another. Can they identify a killer before another life is lost?
CHEATER is an intriguing whodunnit police procedure style mystery with a pale side of romance. The retirement home setting supports a large cast of unique, aging characters, some of whom are quite flamboyant, colorful and humorous which helps lighten the tone. The complex, intricately woven plot line is typical of the author with meticulous details and breadcrumbs for both the police and readers to follow. Several plausible red herrings keep Kit and readers guessing. As the story unfolds, Kit and Sam dance around the attraction simmering between them with both afraid to make the first move. While the overall plot line is complex, the story lingers a bit long in the center before picking up again in the final third heading into the climax.
Author Karen Rose is one of my favorite authors in the suspense thriller genre. I'm familiar with her style of writing and have spent many a late-night devouring one of her books. CHEATER has a different vibe than her past work, and some may find it lacking in the typical darkness and sense of malice, evil and urgency normally found in Rose's books. It's entirely possible it's intentional, and the author's going in a new direction with the San Diego series. Rose does an excellent job of highlighting the competency of women in roles of power through Kit's character while also showing her vulnerability when it comes to family and the man she thinks deserves better than her. Recommended to fans of lighter mysteries, thrillers and romance suspense.
Sam and Kit. They danced around each other, romantically, during the first book in this San Diego Series and the dance resumes here in the second book. I'm not a fan of this loooong drawn out dance. The mystery is great, although it is absent the double-digit body count. Kit can't let herself be happy. Her foster sister died and being a scared foster kid, Kit just can't let herself fall in love and be happy. She feels she doesn't deserve that, and that Sam deserves someone better than her. It got very annoying. Sam is just a wonderful person, a psychiatrist who volunteers at a high-end retirement home and also at a teen shelter, you wonder where he is going to find time to even have a girlfriend if he can finally convince Kit to give it a go. The last third redeemed this book, somewhat. But this book was lacking in so many ways and was a real disappointment. My first Karen Rose disappointment and hopefully my last.
Dr. Sam Reeves plays the piano as a volunteer at the high-end Shady Oaks Retirement Village. He brings a lot of joy to the residents there and has made friends with several of the elderly residents. When a friend of Sam's and a resident is found stabbed to death Sam comes face to face with San Diego Police Department Homicide Detective Katherine “Kit” McKittrick, whom he hasn't seen for six months. This death is just the tip of what is wrong at the Shady Oaks.
Sam already has the trust of the residents and Kit finds, much as she hated to admit, that she needs Sam to assist in building trust and finding out who is behind the murder. But even with Sam's help, Kit and her partner, Connor have a tough time unraveling this case. But they have help from some savvy seniors.
3 1/2-Stars
I had such high expectations for this book, because I enjoyed Cold-Blooded Liar but felt it was lacking in romance and this title was featuring the same characters. Karen Rose has a habit of writing a series that features different characters each book and I wasn't holding my breath on this one, so I was pleasantly surprised to find it was a continuation of Kit and Sam's story. Unfortunately, it was also about 95% police procedural and 5% romance which isn't what I want when I'm reading something that's supposed to be romantic suspense. Sam and Kit actually spend very little time together and the "romance" consisted of every other character mentioning how the two sure did want each other with lots of blushing and/or denying from Kit and Sam. Ugh. These are adult characters, not teenagers. There was also a ton of repetition. "Six months ago" was mentioned 36 times according to my kindle and because the two main characters were not investigating together a lot of that was repeated as well. What we did get was constant reaffirmation of how saintly Betsy and Harlan were and how they can work miracles with runaways and virtually everything they touch turns to gold. And how spunky the little old ladies at the retirement home are, with rhinestone-covered walkers and blue hair and dirty minds - the whole thing was just so cliché and over the top I spent most of the time trying to resist rolling my eyes. Sam was a weepy, nerdy, Clark-Kent-glasses type who was so pure and good that he spent his spare time playing the piano at the retirement home for the elderly, and the poor murder victim is the one who requests The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden, because of course he does. No Mozart for these octogenarians. It was just too much. I was bored. I did not like this. It was so over the top and corny and Wren's unsolved murder seems to still hang in the balance so I'm guessing there will be more of this series, but I will not be reading it.
Series: San Diego Case Files, Book 2
Narrated by: Hillary Huber
Length: 13 hrs and 34 mins
Homicide Detective Kit McKittrick and her partner have to solve the murder in the Shady Oaks retirement centre. Can they solve the murder before anyone else is put in danger?
I haven't read Karen Rose's newest work because I disliked that her books started to get long chapters from the villain's POV. As I didn't want to be in someone's sick and twisted head, I stopped reading her books. Now someone told me that this story was told from Kit's and Sam Reeves's POV, so I decided to give it a try. So far I like it. I'm intrigued by the events what are happening in the retirement centre, and it is interesting to get to know more about Kit's past and people around her. Kit and Sam are cute together but I like that author is not rushing with their romance.
Oh dear what's happened with Karen Rose?! I'm a HUGE fan and have been right from the start and whilst this wasn't awful, it really wasn't up to her usual par. I'm sorry but what an absolute bore is she making of her main male characters (especially the last two books). Unfortunately, its going to be a begrudging 3 stars from me.
The San Diego Case Files series continues when a victim is found stabbed to death at the elite Shady Oaks Retirement Village. From independent living to hospice care, the residents get the best Shady Oaks can offer. It becomes clear from the very start to Detective Katherine "Kit" McKittrick that the murderer has to be someone in the community.
In a very somber setting, Kit runs into a volunteer at Shady Hokes and that is Dr. Sam Reeves, a man with who Kit has a connection, but it is one she does her best to deny. Although a busy criminal psychologist, Sam devotes as much time as possible to the residents, and has developed some very strong bonds.
While Kit begins her investigation, Sam proves to be more than instrumental when it comes to interviewing the various residents and staff. Death is never welcomed, even when natural causes is the case. But, when murder happens in a place where older residents expect nothing less than the best, it definitely leaves a bad taste. Although Same is helpful in a number of ways, his presence is problematic for Kit because of growing feelings for Sam that she is finding more and more difficult to ignore.
In usual Karen Rose style, she does an excellent job bringing both suspense and romance to her readers. The suspense carries from beginning to end and, personally, I enjoyed the slow burn of romance between Kit and Sam. I am sure that their next case will be just as intriguing as this one was, all while their personal relationship taking a turn.
Many thanks to Berkley Books and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion...
*Thoughts*
Karen Rose's Cheater is the second installment in the author's The San Diego Case Files, and the 29th in the author's Romantic Suspense world. The author and publisher are actually releasing two books a year that are set in San Diego and New Orleans. This series follows two main characters: Homicide Detective Ki McKittrick and Dr. Sam Reeves who is a criminal psychologist. For the record, I did not read Cold Blooded Liar which was the first installment in this series, and the story where Kit and Sam first meet. Hopefully, I will soon.
Ms. Rose has never failed to captivate me with a story, and this book is no different. Previously introduced to Kit McKittrick and Sam Reeves in Cold Blooded Liar we now get to learn even more about them in this second installment of the San Diego series. I really enjoyed them as characters and seeing how they worked together, even while avoiding one another. They kept the book really fun I thought, and gave a nice little break in between murder, thievery, and suspense.
Speaking of murder, as always I loved the mystery and trying to figure out the whodunit. I can honestly say I was surprised by a few turn of events that happened in this book and I enjoyed those moments so much. I'm excited to get another mystery from Ms. Rose and even more so to see Sam and Kit together again.
After devouring Cold-Blooded Liar last year where Kit and Sam are introduced, I was eager to see what came next for them and what new case with a gritty, intense tone would be introduced. Karen Rose has long since become one of my top go-to authors for the thriller romance and police procedural genres.
Cheater is the second installment of the San Diego Files and part of the greater over-arcing Romantic Suspense series. Now, I did read the first book, but I felt the way Cheater was written with plenty of explanation for what happened previously (of the non-spoilery kind) that it could easily be picked up as a standalone.
As I stated in my opening thoughts, I go to Karen Rose books for a gritty suspenseful police procedural with some sizzling romancing on the side. I noticed in Cold-Blooded Liar that there was some deviation from all that. Oh sure, it was a riveting suspense, but the romance was more a hint than actuality. And, that didn’t move further along in Cheater nor did the case get as dark and gritty as the author’s norm. All that to say, San Diego Files are a bit of something different so expectations must be altered if one is to enjoy it.
The murder at a high-end nursing home several months after the Cold-Blooded Liar case brings Kit and her partner detecting into Dr. Sam’s sphere once again. He works with and volunteers with the elderly now. Kit and Sam are uncomfortable around each other because Kit is denying her feelings still and Sam isn’t sure what do with his feelings in the mean time. I really didn’t want a long book full of Kit’s emotional stagnation after the last book and her issues because she was a foster kid (no, I’m not being insensitive- Kit is being overly sensitive, or rather fearful with little reason by pushing Sam away, and it bugs me).
Most of the book put the romance off to the side and focused on the case. I really enjoy how much Karen Rose puts into making the police procedural side and the law enforcement world really come alive and feel authentic even while the plot paces forward without the need for info dumps. It’s all so organic and I can follow along with the investigation team as if I were there. That said, for the first time, I did feel the page count at times and was impatient for things to get going (there are moments of going over the same ground) and the early part of the book rehashed more than necessary with what came before.
But, for all that, I was into getting to end with all the puzzle pieces in place to show the whole picture. Perhaps because this was about the vulnerable elderly, I did feel outrage at them being the victims and being victimized. Kit was a fab detective and I enjoyed seeing her work one end while Sam used his inside track to help on the case from a different angle. This wrapped up strong and felt complete with some series plot threads regarding Sam’s foster sister’s cold case and the relationship left for the next installment.
In summary, I was glad to have read this one, but wouldn’t recommend it as a book for first-timers to Karen Rose. The series is loaded with a good balance of romantic suspense, but Cheater is definitely a middle of a series book with mostly suspense. Instead reach for the first in the overall series or for the first of the San Diego Files.
I rec'd an eARC via NetGalley to read in exchange for an honest review.
2.5/5 stars.
I had to look back on my reviews because I remember reading the first book in this series but didn’t remember anything else about it.
I see now that because it was my first Karen Rose ever had no expectations & wanted to see where it’d go.
After reading this 2nd book in the series my opinion is not quite great.
Like many others have already pointed out, it’s too slow and it has hardly any romance going on.
The suspense wasn’t suspensing. It was convoluted for no reason at all while also being extremely predictable at the same time.
It was definitely not one of those books that you can’t close up to go to sleep. I was sleeping fine the entire time. And the romance was a weird mixture of 3rd grade feelings along with a ton of meddling people.
Probably would try to read the next instalment of the series but if it’ll continue on the same path it’d be the last.
Thank you NetGalley and Headline for the digital ARC!
Murder in a retirement community. Kit and Sam are back, and still need one another to solve a case. Kit is the detective investigating the case. Sam is a volunteer at the retirement community, and a criminal psychologist.
Cheater is the 29th book in the Romantic Suspense series by Karen Rose. It is the second book in the San Diego case files series. Kit and Sam were introduced in the first book, Cold Blooded Liar. While Cheater can be read as a standalone, I recommend reading Cold Blooded Liar first.
Well-developed characters in a fast paced and intriguing story. Cheater is a suspenseful and entertaining thriller.
Cheater is the second installment in Karen Rose’s San Diego Case Files romantic suspense series. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series and was eager to pick this one up, particularly to see if things have started to heat up between Detective Kit McKittrick and criminal psychologist Dr. Sam Reeves.
As always, you can count on Karen Rose to deliver when it comes to a well-plotted, twisty, suspenseful murder mystery, along with subtle hints of romance. I was very intrigued that the murder investigation revolved around what should have been a peaceful retirement community and that once Kit started digging, all kinds of secrets, lies and other assorted shady dealings were brought to light. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep me both entertained and guessing until the big reveal.
I also of course enjoyed watching Kit and Sam work together again. The chemistry between these two is undeniable, but as a psychologist, Sam is all too aware of how Kit’s past has made her very hesitant when it comes to relationships. This is definitely a slow burn, but I’m liking what I’m seeing so far and content to see how things unfold.
It was also a joy to see Kit’s family again. They are such good people and such a wonderful support system for Kit. Every time they take in another runaway or orphan and give them a safe place to stay, it just warms my heart.
If you’re in the mood for an engrossing mystery with a side of slow burn romance, you can’t go wrong with Cheater.
The second book in the San Diego instalment, Kit is a homicide detective with her partner.
There has been a murder at a care home “shady Oaks “
It is up to kit to solve the murder, she finds out that her love who she has been shying away from is playing the piano and helping out at shady oaks.
There is more twists and turns to come, you get drawn into kits life with her parents and family(she’s adopted) she grew up in care with her sister, the relationship with her sister and her new family are in the first book in the series.
There’s more twists in this book and things happen that kit and her colleagues try to find the killer and why etc.
I like Karen Rose books and I thought this was really well worth reading.
I enjoyed this book. The characters were very likable and really helped the storyline. I even enjoyed following the budding romance. The story was well written and I constantly wanted to continue reading to see what was going to happen next. I thought the chapters were long. They were broken into sections, but I would have preferred the chapters to be shorter.
I really enjoyed this! I absolutely loved Cold Blooded Liar so this was a great part 2 to Sam and Kit. Their romance may not be the main focus of the story but I still loved them so much. I can't wait to see what's in store for them in the future. Especially Kit's family.. her parents have to be the sweetest humans in the world. 🥰
In regard to the crimes, I was a bit shocked as to who the culprit was! Of course it all made sense by the end but I was not expecting that at all.
At 25% I am calling this over. This is my first DNF of the year.
The beginning started out well, with description and a nice conversation between Kit (homicide detective) and Rita, the foster that her parents have taken on. When the setting changed to the senior facility where a murder occurred that Kit will be investigating with her partner, Connor, the writing changed becoming mostly stilted dialogue, sometimes with overly long monologues that didn't sound real. In fact, Kit's monologue right before she exits Connor's car to walk to a dinner sounds like an email to me rather than one side of a conversation. Unfortunately with all of this dialogue, the author forgot to insert a decent amount of description to help the reader feel/imagine the setting. The final straw was when Kit explains to Connor the reason for the dinner although he was the only person who already knew the reason for the dinner.
I think that this author is probably just not for me.
Many thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy.
Love love love this San Diego set police procedural series. Few mystery series are set in my home city and I enjoy moving around familiar neighborhoods. I also enjoy the back stories, especially Kit’s foster/adoptive family. I’ve been a foster parent and this series gets it right. There is also a tad of romance, but not too much - low swoon on th eromance just as I prefer.
This was a miss for me.
There was very little romance. Which is fine, but the mystery wasn’t particularly strong on it’s own and this is marketed as more of a romance so that was disappointing. I know I haven’t read the earlier books in this series so perhaps that factors in here, but there was no chemistry here between FMC and the MMC?! I get they’re meant to have past history and so that’s why they’re so awkward but it’s pretty hard to buy into a romance when there’s just nothing going on with them?!
It didn’t sit well with me how our FMC threw around her past trauma whenever it suited her. This really, really bugged me and it happened several times. It felt like whenever she needed to manipulate someone to do what she wanted she would exploit her past trauma and just throw it around as if to say ‘see I understand so now you have to believe me’. From my experience of working with people who have experienced trauma, it’s not something they’re going to start shoving in people’s faced multiple times a day in a professional setting and the author’s decision to allow the FMC to manipulate others and exploit this past experience felt really uncomfortable. I didn’t think our FMC was particularly likeable even before this but after she did this several times I really wasn’t into it.
Again, the constant emphasis that Betsy and Harlan are saints for being foster carers and can work miracles with children and young people in their care did not sit well with me at all. The whole writing around foster care, adoption and everything to do with it did not feel like an accurate portrayal of how any of this works and I found myself rolling my eyes repeatedly here.
The plot was also a bit convoluted so it lost my interest. I don’t mind a complex plot - in fact I love a plot with layers and twists and turns. But the way this one played out there was just no way you could predict the ending so it all felt a bit flat.
Overall it was corny, predictable and a bit boring. Not for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an E-ARC
2,5 ster. voor mij persoonlijk de minste van Karen Rose die ik tot nu gelezen heb. Ik vond hem voorspelbaar en vond de mmc niet echt uit de verf komen
REVIEW OF AUDIOBOOK; APRIL 3, 2024
Narrator: Hillary Huber
When I saw this installment was about a murder in a retirement home, I groaned. That's been done to death, along with cults and human trafficking. But I'd listened to the first book and wanted to see if the second would be better.
Is it? Nope. At least I finished the first book,. This second one, I'm at 67% and am likely to stop here. I didn't care for any of the characters, not even for Sam and that's sad since he is the romantic interest of Kit. He was so forgettable, except for the crying. He cried too much. I didn't care about any of the characters in the retirement home, not even remotely interested in the victim, who turns out to be a retired cop. Perhaps the only interesting bit is that the vic was closeted and married to a software guy who died and left him millions. Now, that makes it a more riveting plot, methinks.
The lack of romance didn't bother me though it did surprise me because at the close of the first book it felt like Kit and Sam would start dating. So I was puzzled by Kit's don't-come-near-me attitude. I can't recall what happened in the first book that would have resurfaced here and made her so skittish.
Will I buy the third book? Unlikely. In fact, I regret spending my Audible credit on Cheater. I feel cheated because this is not the Karen Rose I know. This feels like Karen Rose whose forte is gritty, suspenseful murder cases now attempting to write a cozy mystery.
And failing spectacularly.
The second book in the San Diego Case Files series reunites Detective Kit McKittrick and Dr. Sam Reeves. Kit is called to the Shady Oaks Retirement village when a resident is found dead with a butcher knife in his chest. Sam is already there since he has volunteered there for a number of years. Kit has managed to avoid Sam for some months because he frightens her by the depth of her feelings for him. Now they have to work together.
The first victim is Frankie Flynn who was a good friend of Sam's since he reminds him of the grandfather he lost. It is discovered that Frankie was a former homicide lieutenant in San Diego who left at age 55 to marry his long-time male lover Ryan. The two build a life and career in the antiques business in San Francisco but returned to move to the retirement community when Ryan's sister and brother-in-law Benny moved in and remained there when both Ryan and his sister died.
Kit and Sam need to find out who wanted Frankie dead and, along the way, discover that there are lots shady going on in the retirement community. The director of security is found dead in a cheap hotel in a supposed suicide, the IT guy disappears, and Benny dies of a supposed heart attack after his $4 million is found missing.
And while being deep in their investigation, Kit needs to come to terms with her feeling for Sam before it is too late for both of them.
This was an excellent thriller. I enjoyed the twisty plot and the wonderful characters.
