J.L. Bryan studied English literature at the University of Georgia and at Oxford, with a focus on English Renaissance and Romantic literature. He also studied screenwriting at UCLA. He lives in the metro Atlanta sprawl with his wife and son. He is the author of the Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper books and some other assorted novels like Inferno Park, The Unseen, Jenny Pox, and basically a lot of supernatural stories, some of it dark, some of it very dark, some of it less dark than that.
Ellie Jordan and her co workers Stacey and Jacob have been around for a long while.now.but this series never gets stale. There's always a new mystery, monster, haunting ready to get your pulse racing. Ellie deals with problems other private detective s can't fix, who do you call when Ghostbusters is just a film shown at halloween? You call Ellie tormented by a deadly firestarter spirit as a child (he burned down the family home killing everyone but Ellie) she knows well that ghosts are real and dedicated herself to helping people who for one reason or another end up.being haunted ------------and not by benign ghosts Ellie is only called in when people are desperate. The hauntings may be due to an evil place, i.e. An Insane Asylum, a cursed item such as a murder weapon, or a home haunted by a previous resident who doesn't want to share......... Whatever the cause Ellie and her friends will work tirelessly to protect the innocent and resolve the haunting using a mix of modern and mystical resources............... This one sees a commercial Halloween haunted attraction with some of.the.haunts a bit too realistic for the staff causing the owners to call on Ellie and Stacey for help........
I adore this series, which isn't a secret by any means, but I really do think it's just getting better and better. And yes, that applies even after 20-plus books!
Truly, this was one of my absolute favorites I think I have read to date. I loved the theme, I loved the atmosphere, and I loved how vivid all the imagery was. I felt like I was right there, on the cusp of Halloween, in that haunted house, experiencing it all. I got so many chills while reading this and just couldn't get enough of it. I am so sad it is over. It was a perfect Halloween (or after Halloween) read!
I still enjoy these stories. This one had a more light fun feeling. Ellie still isn’t my favorite but the stories are well done. Michael deserves better and what was with all Stacie’s ogling. I think a female lead makes sense but not sure about the authors ability to portray them. My life belongs to the dead and only casually date should be her MO until the series is wrapped. Nothing against Michael.
Ellie and Stacey are back finding the good late night eats in whatever town they're currently working out of and stopping ghosties from creating havoc. Admittedly, that last part takes some doing. Come to think, sometimes they strike out on the good food front and have to take what's available. For the record, egg rolls sound kind of delicious right now, thanks, Stacey.
So. This time around they're checking out what's been disrupting the scares at an old mortuary turned haunted house. Given that countless funerals have taken place there and there have been several deaths on the property, Ellie and Stacey have their work cut out for them. Seeing as how the entire place is set up as a giant scare factory, there's A LOT going on.
But Ellie's up to the task. So's Stacey, but she's a lot less happy about the research side of things. Dressing up in scary costumes, though, and getting themselves to fit into the vibe of the place? Stacey's definitely down for that.
A layered haunting (there's seriously a lot going on for poor Ellie on this one), scare actors who have been scared themselves, a house with a past, and two plucky ladies who keep going until they get to the bottom of a situation. *thumbs up*
The author put the book out at the perfect time when Halloween was just around the corner. This time Ellie and Stacey had to solve some ghostly disturbances at a Mortuary turned Haunted House. It was fun to get the details of the Haunted House it was a creative one. Then you mix in ghosts and it makes the Haunted House extra creepy. It turned out to be a more complicated case which left Ellie and Stacey going to another state but that’s what I like how they do the research necessary to help people. Stacey’s boyfriend wasn’t completely helpful with this one which I liked it was a huge Ellie and Stacey moment on solving the case. These books you constantly want to pick up due to the creativeness of why the ghost are there. There stories are unique some are extra crazy but some are not. It’s nice that we can mixed books like that. We don’t know what we are in for until we are sucked in.
Great variety of fun characters and details setting the stage for the haunting
The variety of fun characters and clever dialogue moved along with fantastic flow. I worried that Bryan's usual flair for interesting back story would get lost in the focus upon an actual "fun house haunted house" as the setting. Fortunately, there was no need for concern. I was impressed by the attention to descriptive details providing clarity as the characters moved around through the complex environments of the story's setting. I was able to visually "build the haunted house" in my mind. Another entertaining fast moving read! Now I begin the process of waiting for the next book in the series to be released ...which never seems to go fast enough simply because of my high anticipation
Combining a former funeral home with a haunted house theme gets the owners more than they bargained for, calling out to Ellie Jordan for help. I love the fact that even at #21, the locations and ghosts are still fresh and exciting. As always, the comaraderie between Ellie and Stacy feels real, and the snarkiness is always fun. Adding food details and camera set up specifics helps bring these stories a sense of reality, making the main characters feel like friends. As always, I can’t wait for the next book in this series, and so glad that this one was released early, in time for Halloween.
After 20 books you'd think you get used to characters and their mannerisms but this edition to the series added depth and complexity to the characters. I learned new things about the characters political views and relationships. I love the black cat and golden retriever combo that is Ellie and Stacy. It felt like that really shined in this book.
Reading this series is a little treat but this one was especially good. I recommend this series anytime ghosts or books or fire safety comes up.
Another great scary story from the master, J.L. Bryan. There are lots of frights and surprises to be had. Ellie and Stacey have their hands full as they try to clear a haunted haunted house. Yes, you read that right. The haunted house attraction is actually haunted! The house was so well described that I felt like I had actually been there and seen it for myself. And the cover art, WHEW, what a gem. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
This is a perfect book to read before Halloween. Ellie and Stacey head to an old funeral home that is being billed as a haunted mortuary. The owners are brother and sister and recently inherited the building from a great uncle. Weird things happen in the mortuary during the hours the venue is open and when it’s closed. A few of the actors are living in the attic to cut costs. This was a lot of fun and a bit spooky.
I devour these books in one sitting, and this one was no exception. As always, the plot was well thought out and the characters were well rounded. It was easy to follow, exciting, and had a wonderful Hallowe'en ambiance. There were also some pretty decent one-line zingers. I can't wait for the next installment.
Ellie heads to a haunted mansion, located in a former funeral parlor. This book was so descriptive it made me feel like I was there in the haunted mansion. As Ellie & Stacy try to get to the bottom of the actual haunting, the action ratchets up! I can’t wait for the next book!
This one seemed to have a lot of unnecessary filler for a large chunk of the book. Things didn’t really start happening until about the last quarter. Having Jacob making an appearance is always my favorite part of these books but even he couldn’t make it any more exciting. He appeared very briefly and the insight he gave wasn’t that impactful. Overall, it was just ok.
I own every ebook in the series- and they are all amazing. This novel, number 21, is a great continuation with the same likable characters and scary ghosts. The ghost hunters win in the end and I can’t wait for the next installment.
More rom-com with ghosts than the usual full on horrors that Ellie and Stacy usually encounter, but still a good read, and a procedural lesson in ghost hunting the past lives of the haunters (is that a word?).
This was another great read. A haunted haunted house. I wasn't expecting the twist toward the end of the book. Once again, patiently (not quite) waiting for Ellie's next adventure.
Creepy paranormal mystery set in an abandoned funeral home. Readable installment in the Ellie Jordan series. Plenty of spooky moments and a couple of good twists near the end. Good book, and an addictive read.
This was really fun. Adding the seasonal fake haunted house that is actually haunted really kept things interesting while still adding the scare factor of actual ghosts. What I really loved about this was the addition of the not ghost spookiness and the resolution of who the ghosts actually were and what they were actually haunting. The drawback is Ellie's relationship with Michael. Not that they aren't still great together but having her ditch out on their date to watch over a possibly fake haunting really demonstrated Ellie's priorities. Knowing that she will never leave Savannah, and that Michael has plans for what he wants to do with his future just really feels like neither are getting what they want out of this relationship. I'm amazed that this is a favorite series after 21 books! There's no way I would go into a new series now knowing it was that long. Keep them coming, I will read them all!

I really enjoy this entire series. It's a little scary and has some humorous parts also. I have read the whole series and the writing is superb I recommend these books for anyone who enjoys a really well written paranormal experience.
I love the series but this one was a chore to get through. Usually the book is exciting, and a wonderful read. This took far too long to get to the end.
I do love these books and the characters in them. Being back with Ellie and Stacey is always a pleasure no matter what ghost they may or may not be chasing. it's a wonder to lose myself in.
