Very good book. It offers a view of the American Civil War from a confederate officer's perspective. The book also covers battlefield tactics and strategy from both sides during the Shenandoah Valley campaign. This book is also a very good biography of one of the great military leaders in the history of the United States.

The first volume of Henderson’s biography of Stonewall Jackson was very engaging and a pleasure to read. While it seems to have been crafted for a European (specifically English) audience, due to the constant references to various European wars like the English Civil War, the Franco-Prussian war etc. Americans (or any non-European for that matter) with a passing knowledge of European military history will not be lost by the allusions.

There is a strong focus on strategy and tactics, both of which Jackson excelled at, and for which the author heaps deserved praise onto his subject. However, Henderson does not let the brilliance of Jackson’s military acumen obscure the rest of his character. Jackson emerges as a loving husband, a dutiful patriot, and a devout Christian.
