The story of a family struggling through everyday life with a dark power over them so strong that they cannot find thier way. If only they would listen a little harder to the other voice trying to get through to them-the voice of hope, forgiveness and love-before it's too late.
What a fabulous book. I love the characters, Richard, Janet, Susan, Tommy, and the crew. Many of us never take into consideration the problems and issues we face in our every day lives and how they are heavily influenced by the choices we make. I loved the inside insight of how we face a battle every day we live. I appreciated the revelation that God and Satan constantly war for our souls. I am reminded that we are advised when making choices to always choose life. Life comes in the form of a never ending all forgiving God who gave himself for us simply because He loves us and all of our mess...
Great read..Great author and can't wait to read his other books...
I wasn't expecting this book to have a lot of impact. I was wrong. It blew me away. It tells the story of the Sullivan family and the people and events surrounding them from two very different perspectives. First, we see how events play out when the family does not know Jesus and God has no place in their lives. Second, we see the same events played out when the family does invite Jesus into their hearts and builds a relationship with God and other believers. Hudson has such a gift for making his characters real and the situations believable. I lost count of how many times I thought, "I've felt exactly that way." It is very easy to recognize yourself in some of the situations and characters. At times it was difficult to read because of the heavy nature of the subject, but most of the time it was eye-opening, enlightening, and encouraging. I highly recommend "On the Edge" to anyone who wants to better understand what goes on in the battle for our souls between good and evil. This book is a wake up call to everyone, believer or not, and could be used in ministering to others. I've told everyone in my bible study group about it and hope to share it with others in the future.
I read this back in 1994, and I still remember it in vivid, horrible detail. It's probably the worst book I ever read, with flat characters drenched in stereotype and an unbelievable plot. I believe the opening sentence was an evocative "Balzor was proud." Yeah, great start. Check out the quotes the author helpfully provided for more of his writing style.
Halfway through the book, when it's finally gotten almost interesting because the characters are in major trouble, the story stops and the author notes, "Now this is what would have happened if only someone had witnessed the Gospel to this family…" and he starts the story over again.
I actually flung this book at the wall and stabbed it through the cover. That felt so, so refreshing, even though I never could hurt this book as much as it hurt me.
Sometimes we don't think our lives have an impact at all, much like George Bailey of It's A Wonderful Life, because we don't have to perspective that God has to see the ripples of those we come into contact with every single day. We all know as believers in Christ, the impacts we have on those close to us like family and friends and being a husband and father in this world holds the key to some much it is hard to wrap our heads around it. There are those like Richard Sullivan, the main character in F. Parker Hudson's novel, On the Edge who believe like most non-believers that we are here simply to do the best with what we have with the time we have. There are no supreme consequences for any life decisions we make, because there is no God after all. So is the life he lives and as readers, we get to see those ripples as they reach out to his wife and children and even friends and work associates.
Richard's life is probably like most middle age men of this world. He works hard to provide for his family of two growing teens Susan and Tommy, but as a corporate attorney, he is very much in demand and believes that providing a sound financial future for them all, is the extent of his main responsibility to his family. His marriage to Janet is in the standard rut after many of years of being together, and with her job at the news station, they are simply roommates at this stage of their life trying to get by. Perhaps that is why Richard is so pleased with Kristen, a much younger real estate agent who he has been having an affair with every Tuesday and Thursday when everyone in his life believes he goes to the gym to work out. Richard truly justifies every decision in his life with any regard to the consequences his actions are having on his family.
We get to see first hand from a physical sense and also a look in the spiritual realm of how these things are being puppeted and manipulated by demons because Richard's life and that of those around him have no desire to know about God and offers no protection to what is happening and how it will all play out. Since his parents weren't believers, he has no foundation to stand on, no seed has been planted in his life, even though he does have some interaction with believers of Christ, he doesn't buy into any of it. When his family ask him for help, he has no guidance to offer them other than his own opinion or experience in the matter and it simply drives a greater rift between him and his family with eternal consequences that will impact all of them.
I received On the Edge by F. Parker Hudson compliments of the author himself for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review aside from a free copy of this novel and the opinions contained here are my personal and honest ones. This is an exceptional look into the invisible spiritual realm and we get to see two very different versions of Richard's life being played out before the reader. In Book One, we see what Richard's life is like without his acceptance of God into his life and its eternal impacts. In Book Two, the author gives us a George Bailey moment in which we get to see an alternative version of his life in which seeds are planted and later harvested when Richard becomes a believer. It provides for the reader a way to look at their own lives and see first hand how these "ripples" in our life can touch so many others without us even knowing it. I love the disclaimer the author also provides at the beginning of this novel because the Bible does offer us some idea of angelic interaction, it does leave the actual appearance a bit of mystery since they are not truly described in detail. For me, this is my all time favorite genre and the first I've ever read like it offering two very different versions of the same story within the cover which is why I believe this one deserves a 5 out of 5 stars. I caution you however, that some of the subjects discussed may be upsetting to some, but defines the implications on how sin develops in the lives of those without Christ.
This book was first published in 1994, after Frank Peretti's (better) books about spiritual warfare (and angels) . It was an interesting take, I guess, in that it felt like a blend of It's a Wonderful life and Peretti's books. I am not sure about the character development as there are a lot of characters in this book (I felt it really could have used some kind of Cast of Characters or something in the beginning, there were so many characters in the book!); not only were there a lot of characters, there were several characters that had the same first name, which kept throwing me off as well (a lot of "Tom's" and "Susan's" in the book). It was a captivating book, even though it felt like it dragged in parts. Some other parts felt "too convenient," and there were one or two moments that felt "too contrived" while I was reading. At the same time, I think the "core message" of the book was pretty solid (we are engaged in spiritual warfare and our enemies are not flesh-and-blood creatures) .
I had mixed feelings while reading it (mostly because of the latter part of verse 19 in Romans 16 that says "be excellent at what is good and stay innocent of evil"). The author does not get into any graphic descriptions of sinful activity, which is fine. The "problem" is that he says just enough to create a mental image and the mind fills in the blanks. So I guess that is a "sign of strength" on his part as a writer, that he can create partial images that the brain is able to finish filling in to make a "complete picture" or something; I just do not know how I feel about some of the mental images that were generated while reading.
One thing that I think the author does a nice job of is showing how there are consequences for our actions, and some of those consequences might not appear until "further down the road" of our lives. He shows both good and bad consequences; it is not all "rose-colored glasses" for Richard after he becomes a Christian. I thought the author also did a good job of "hammering this home," that just because we become Christians does not mean our lives will suddenly become easy for us. It was and is a good lesson to remember.
.
Overall, I think I liked this book enough to rate it as a 3-star book; maybe 2.6 - 2.8 stars, rounded up. The author makes a number of good points throughout the narrative, and I wish I had jotted some of them down. As it was, it was still an entertaining book, and I am glad that I finally took a chance and read it.
This story pulls back the curtain that we experience in our lives on earth and let’s the reader experience the tremendous power of prayer. This is one of the most powerful books I’ve ever read. It reveals the deceit and lies of Satan, who would seek to devour and destroy all people. So thankful that Mr Hudson wrote this book and that I had the privilege to read it!
I thought when I first started reading it, it would be cheesy. Then it was like a reality show or soap opera, I was looking into the life of a normal American family. Just like yours, and mine. I couldn’t put it down! Then the possible end..was like a literal punch in the stomach. I’ve never had a book make me feel like that..the wind is knocked out of you, you can’t breathe, unbelievable. I learned so much from this book..it is super heavy! This is definitely a life changer. You’ll be shocked. 100%. This book is extremely graphic in parts-the writer tried to warn me but I didn’t believe it..another eye opener as to how that happens. Those voices in our heads..try a sample..if you get through this book..you won’t be the same.
Really good read. The personification of the evil spirits makes sit easy to see how easy evil works in the world, not just the world of fiction, but the real world. The first ending was dramatic and powerful and very real. And while I enjoyed the alternative end, I think there is an important lesson to be had with the reality and the finality of the first ending and the realization that comes with, "not so happily ever after".
I will admit, there were too many Bob's, Bill's and Toms...it was hard to keep them from blending into one character.
I will also ask, what is up with Richard not having to confess his adulterous relationship in the alternative ending. I do not think that God's discipline, albeit loving allows for a lack of accountability to that level
I can only describe this book as life changing. It illustrates spiritual warfare in a way we can all understand. You see first hand how the devil is at play in the take down of the Sullivan family. I saw where others disliked that the story ends and then begins again but I found that it began again, yes, but with different details as the main character was more open to a life with Christ and then ultimately accepts Christ into his heart. I loved how the power of prayer was depicted—it really made me start praying more and start praying for my family more. I can only hope that what I learned from this book stays with me for a lifetime. I definitely recommend this book!

An interesting perspective. As you read this story of a 'typical' family, you see the basic struggles that confront us all on a daily basis. What you don't see is the 'devil' lurching above the city, watching, waiting for any sign of weakness in a human...and down he swoops to help you lose your way.
For me, it was a powerful reminder of how easy it is to get lost, but also how easy it is to stay on the right path... with hope, forgiveness, and love.
The power of prayer! So impactful and reinforced through the story how prayer and faithfulness can change the world! “…revival brought the nation to the moment when people finally realized that neither government nor any other program conceived by humans can answer the problems of our day.” The founders of our nation knew that each individual and nation must be founded on the one true God and on His will if we are to survive and prosper! Please read!
Well crafted story of the impact that spiritual choices have on our lives. Demonstrates the impact that choices to honor and follow Jesus Christ have not only on our own lives, but on the lives of those around us. Reminds the reader of the pervasive nature of spiritual warfare and shows how one choice radiates out to affect so many.
Part 1 is a good depiction of the triumph of evil in our daily lives and the consequences. Part 2 however is an attempt to show the opposite, ie, when the love of God wins, but it is not always biblical and whole communities are ‘saved’ at a time. Read and judge for yourselves.
This book although a work of fiction is spot on when when dealing with the forces of evil that are unseen to the human eye but all so real. God is there for us and wants a relationship with us through his son JESUS CHRIST. Its not easy but it is the greatest decision you will ever make Period. The devil and his minions only want your destruction Period!!
Heart warming truth about how God works when you take Him to heart
I would recommend this book to all I know believers an unbelievers. A honest way Satan and demon to pray on people to keep them from the truth of God's word and promises for a more comfortable life. 2 separate stories, same family 1w/o God and 1w/God first and foremost in your life. A much needed read.
An extremely difficult read because so.many terrible things happen to the main characters in part one. It took me a long time to even get to part 3 because I didn't want to read all the terrible things. But of course, reading the terrible things (all that happens in part 1) made part 2 that much better. Definitely worth slogging through to get to part 2!
This is a book based on two very different endings. The first half you read what happens when certain choices are made and the second half shows what could change with different choices. It’s a bit predictable at times but shows you the difference life choices make
This book is full of impact, thought provoking, will make you think of your own spiritual battles that goes on in life. Great read could bring many to life and to receive the Lord and Holy Spirt. Awesome book
I enjoyed the style of writing . The book gives a story about a businessman who lives by relying on his own power, and scoffing at men who live faith based lives. It shows the ripple effects on his family and neighbors. I liked the ending.
There were times that On The Edge gripped me and times that I struggled a little. But those times that it gripped me were phenomenal. I was moved to tears on several occasions. If you enjoy spiritual warfare you may enjoy this.
I know the power of prayer. This book has made me realize that the absence of prayer is powerful in a bad way. It's like removing all the safety nets. We need to pray, not only for our own selves but for everyone around us.
This is a very impactful book that makes you stop and think. There is an unseen world going on all around us and this book reminds us that we don’t war against flesh and blood. Awesome book!
I read this book in two days, couldn't put it down. It shows how powerful prayer is and how it can help us fight the darkness and temptations we face every day.
