The Collective #2

Demon Hunter

Rate this book
What happens when the hunter becomes the hunted?

Before that night, there wasn’t much in my life I could complain about. I hunt rogue demons for a living, which is the coolest thing ever, and my brothers are the best. Sure, there was that thing with our parents betraying humanity, and okay, I wasn’t thrilled when my brother-bestie hooked up with a demon, but everything else was amazing.

Except that Dylan, the person I love more than anything, wanted to keep our relationship secret.

I got it; I really did. He’s lost all his family, and he was afraid if my family adopted him, he might lose them too. It’s not like we’ve got the world’s safest jobs. I was sure he’d change his mind eventually.

That decision was taken from him one awful night. Now, everyone knows, but Dylan’s more worried about the people trying to kill me. Unidentified and vicious; that’s all we know. Oh, and they hacked The Collective’s server.

How does a demon hunter fight a virtual threat? He doesn’t… that’s his kickass techie boyfriend’s job. Dylan will find these people, and then we’ll deal with them.

Even if there is more going on than we know about.

LOUISA MASTERS started reading romance much earlier than her mother thought she should. While other teenagers were sneaking out of the house, Louisa was sneaking romance novels in and working out how to read them without being discovered. She’s spent most of her life feeling sorry for people who don’t read, convinced that books are the solution to every problem. As an adult, she feeds her addiction in every spare second, only occasionally tearing herself away to do things like answer the phone and pay bills. She spent years trying to build a “sensible” career, working in bookstores, recruitment, resource management, administration, and as a travel agent, before finally conceding defeat and devoting herself to the world of romance novels. Louisa has a long list of places first discovered in books that she wants to visit, and every so often she overcomes her loathing of jet lag and takes a trip that charges her imagination. She lives in Melbourne, Australia, where she whines about the weather for most of the year while secretly admitting she’ll probably never move.

I WAS NOT EXPECTING TO LOVE THIS BOOK THIS MUCH! It’s so damned good, even though Matt is a super ‘swifty’ which was funny plus annoying. No, I don’t hate her but I don’t like her either, last song I heard/liked was ‘trouble’ I think.

Matty & Dylan are besties to secret boyfriends, but fortunately they tell everyone pretty quickly in the story. They are cute, sweet and awesome and they’re my second favorite couple in the series after Con & Kier. Their relationship is perfect and I enjoyed reading it. The rest of the family make a bigger appearance than the first book AND I LOVED IT, can’t get enough of those idiots. Marc is the best character and I’m also excited about his new demon friend!!!!! hoping for a book three 🤞

The paranormal mystery in this book is really good and I couldn’t put it down. It starts from chapter one where I’m already on the edge of my seat with what’s going on with Matt and continues to a good but quick wrap with the case Dylan was handling. Greg Boudreaux did a great job with the narration, loved him.

Soooo much fun!!!

I'm obsessed with Marc and he was epic throughout this book 😂

Matt and Dylan are ridiculously cute, I swear I was smiling so much at the epilogue that my face was hurting 😍😍😍

I love the balance between the romantic relationship and the ongoing plot, and the friendships between the bestie-brothers and their other halves just get better with every book.

Really hope there's more to come because I'm just not ready to say goodbye to these characters, and I need way more Marc content!! Like a whole series of Marc's encounters with grubby humans please 😁😁

I loved the first one in this series Higher Demon but the plot in this one is so good that I was hooked from start to finish!

There's not going to be any hints and definitely no spoilers in this review, so I'll have to tread carefully when I say that this isn't anything like I was expecting to get with the second instalment in The Collective.

As with book one, you could technically read this if you've not read Louisa's Ghostly Guardians series, but I wouldn't recommend it as you'd miss out on the richness of the background to what happens in this one.

What you get is an adrenaline thrill coupled with a pair of idiots in love who definitely go through the mill as they have to not only deal with Higher Demon Marc and his snark, but also with a serious threat which has been hidden for years.

It kicks off with a real shocker and the pace never lets up from that point onwards. Matt and Dylan are perfect for each other and, while it was a shame we didn't get to see the establishment of their relationship, it means that the risks are all the more potent once we learn their secret.

The mix between their relationship elements and the main storyline is perfectly done, there's a wee bit of lack of communication later on in the story which I wasn't bothered about because it actually makes perfect sense given the circumstances. Plus it's resolved reasonably quickly and it's totally understandable how it could arise.

There's lots of screen time for our favourite Human/Demon pairing Ian and Marc too, I love them more each time they appear, their love language is just my kind of sarcasm and eye-rolling humour!

This book also sets up some new, and very intriguing, characters and leaves open a story thread which I could easily see taking up more books to come. I'm very excited about that!

All in all, this was another brilliant entry in Louisa's paranormal universe.

Audio: 5 stars for Greg B!! I needed him to redeem himself from the last Greg B book I listened too! Haha the audio is on Everand!

Book: 3 stars

Started out well, but I kinda lost interest halfway through. Definitely a me thing, not a book thing.. I hope haha!

Dylan and Matt were cute together but come on you two! COMMUNICATE! Haha you are supposed to be best friends turned lovers so you should know how to talk to each other haha!

Even with that it was a good story, I’d say that if you haven’t read the first series (“Ghostly Guardians”) you won’t be too lost… I read part of that series (aka I think the first 3 books) a few years ago and don’t remember happened haha and still followed what happened in this book. You do need to read book 1 of this series since Marc and Ian are in this book a lot!

Overall idk if I’ll continue the series, but since Greg B narrates I just might continue to pick these up haha 😂

Matt and Dylan are both from demon hunting families and they have been friends for 20 years. Randomly, a year or so ago, Matt said he was horny and needed to get laid and Dylan offered to do phone sex with him. They hooked up occasionally for 2 months, they weren't exclusive, and then they decided in their own words "the sex was so good that they realized what they had was special" (not really romantic!) and they've been dating for like 10 months. They care about each other a lot, they identify as being in love. They have had a secret relationship, because Dylan lost his family and has been close to Matt's family, and he has this hang up about losing Matt's family. It's kind of vague. Matt gets abducted and nearly beaten to death and is only saved by Marc, the higher demon boyfriend of their friend Ian, healing Matt. Something's not right with Matt afterwards though. And their friend group are secretly looking into why Matt was targeted and they uncover some pretty horrendous abuse of demons.

That's the book in a nutshell. If I had to rate the plot of this book within the context of it being a romance novel, I'd rate it as three stars. (The plot was moving so slow, it only started to pick up at about 75% and start getting more interesting.) If I had to rate the romance element of this novel, I'd give it a 1.5 at maximum. This book was a bit boring for a good portion of it. But the biggest travesty to me was that the romance was so absent and like a consciously deferred priority of the characters and the author.

Dylan says a sentence at one point that encapsulates my feelings about this book so well, "crisis first, relationship later." That was exactly what the problem was with this book! But the focus on the relationship never came, because they had one talk at 94% for like a minute and that was the end of the book. That doesn't work in a romance novel! There's not enough relationship for a romance novel, it's not a big enough focus. We were at the 85% mark at one point and these characters haven't even had a conversation about their relationship, they haven't had meaningful interactions during the entire length of the book because they've been dealing with Matt's injury and hiding things afterwards and not being open with each other. There is so much distance between Matt and Dylan because of what's been happening. There's a complete lack of intimacy, tension and attraction between them. The few sex scenes seem a little on the fade to black side, even though they are in part on page. Their first talk of any significance, of any meaning to their relationship, occurs at the 94% mark! And what made me incredibly pissed off, was that they talk for like 5 seconds and then they are like "I need to f*** you" and they go off to have sex and the book is over with just an epilogue to follow. The relationship drama was too easily resolved and there was no tenderness or real love between them, it was just "let's go fuck". I have no reason to think this couple would stay together and not break up other than hey they know each other well because they were friends for years. You don't get to know the characters very well at all. This book did not focus enough on their relationship.

Also another random vent, I feel like the book summary misrepresented what the conflict was in this book. It says that Matt is questioning Dylan's feelings because Dylan had wanted to keep the relationship secret and he was kind of forced into outing their relationship. But there really wasn't that kind of conflict in this book, Dylan reassured Matt that he was okay with their relationship being public and Matt accepted it and they moved on, immediately when the situation presented itself. The actual conflict of the book was that Dylan was not confident in Matt's love for him, because Matt was acting strange after he was beaten and Dylan thought Matt was going to break up with him. It made me question whether the person writing the book summary knew the contents of the book.

The only things I enjoyed about this book was Marc's appearances. Marc's absolute disdain for humanity and his snobbish standards were hilarious and adorable. At one point Marc was called a nice human and he yelled "take that back!" Because he found it so insulting to be compared to humans. Lol. And I liked Dylan freaking out over Marc's approach to technology, he was this close to having kittens over it - I kind of wish Dylan had had a flashy breakdown moment over it, that would have been funny.

Some notable moments:

This was a funny moment. "He’s totally messing with his bestie, and gotta say, in this moment, I love him even more. “Hey, remember the time you called to talk about what we were gonna get Kieran for Christmas?” Ian studies him warily. “Yeah?” “And you asked me if I was coming down with a cold because I sounded funny?” The wariness turns to outright alarm. “Yeeeeah?” “Dylan was going down on me while I talked to you.”"

Marc, I love him. "“Babe,” Ian complains, “you’re supposed to be convincing my family how likeable you are.” Marc tilts his head. “I am. Those are all things I can do to them, but didn’t. Not even to Connor.”"

Marc again! "“Shut up, you live for that crap,” Ian chides. “I’ll even let you terrorize a sales assistant—but only if they’re snooty and treat us like dirt because we’re not dressed fancy.” Looking down his nose, Marc informs him, “There’s a difference between ‘fancy’ and ‘presentable,’ Ian.”"

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

❥ Dual POV
❥ MM Romance
❥ Paranormal
❥ Secret Boyfriends
❥ Friends To Lovers
❥ Demon Hunters
❥ Emotional Scars
❥ Hurt/Comfort
❥ Hunter Becomes Hunted

I'm obsessed with this series, and I really hope we'll see more of The Collective! Both books so far have managed to make me smile and laugh out loud. Demon Hunter especially with Matt and Dylan, and the way they love each other.

It's super clear that they were friends first, because in many ways, their great friendship really shines through, add the love and spice and we have a really solid and respectful relationship, which was great to see. But as the plot moves along, the doubt and insecurities appear as well.

Dylan isn't ready to be official, which causes Matt to doubt Dylan's love for him, but he respects his decision nonetheless. Later on, Matt is struggling with something that has happened to him, keeping it from Dylan, which causes insecurity yet again. It was very sweet how they were looking out for each other, though they were sometimes being idiots about it, but like, in an adorable way. You know what I mean.

The plot kept me hooked throughout the book, and I wasn't able to guess what came next, so that was very refreshing.

I loved that Marc and Ian were a big part of the book as well. I think I could read a whole book with Marc just insulting people. I hope to see more of Raum, he seemed like an entertaining character as well. And the appearance of Mr. Romance aka Liam made me laugh out loud. It was pure gold.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This was a good story, started with way more action than usual. And this book deals with some tough topics so be mindful of that (PTSD, trafficking of demons for labor and sex).

Matt and Dylan are an established couple for this book and are great together, I just wish they would have talked more when Matt had issues bothering him.

Once again I think Marc is my favorite character. He’s so funny while trying to be snarky and low key mean, I love it.

Demon Hunter begins with us being let into the know that Matt has been keeping a mighty big secret from his bestie and family. It turns out that he and their hacker buddy Dylan are a lot more than friends. In fact, Matt and Dylan have been in a relationship for almost a year and have been hooking up for even longer. They are in love. And none of their friends and family have any idea.

Dylan had his reasons for keeping their relationship a secret, but that certainly comes back to bite him in the ass when Matt lands himself in the hospital clinging to life. Dylan has to keep it together while watching the rest of Matt's family fall apart. It must have been brutal on him to try and be the strong one for them while inside he's terrified of losing the man he loves.

I have to say Marc totally shines in this book. From his many quips of superiority that make me laugh to the few glimpses he gives the guys of just what about him Ian could have fallen in love with. Marc is certainly a complicated man, but he definitely comes in key more than a couple times. We also get to meet one of his fellow Higher Demons! Raum is proof that Marc is not an anomaly when it comes to the personalities of demons. He is just as proper and stuck up as Marc, though he seems to care greatly for his fellow demons.

There are some hints dropped to our favorite hunters, but it appears Ian and Marc's bonding is still a secret for now. I can't lie and say I am not dying for a scene where Ian's brothers find out. I don't know whose reaction I want to see more: Matt or Connors. As for the plotline of this book, it covers the major who done it part of the mystery, but there is still quite a lot of work to be done to end the horrific actions the bad guys took part in. My fingers are crossed for a Raum book next!

Louisa Masters has a way of weaving a story that I love! She give you all these little clues along the way until you think you have it figured out and then, BAM it’s totally not what you thought! I’ve loved this little world she’s created since Ghostly Guardians. After reading Ian’s book I was super exhited to read Matt and Dylan’s story. The theme is friends/friends with benefits to lovers plus secret relationship. Both Matt and Dylan have lost a lot. Dylan was afraid of loosing even more and wanted to keep the relationship a secret. Without giving too much away, some things happen and they end up telling their friends and family. The action in this book starts out pretty fast. There’s some intrigue, some funny y demon banter and of course some ghostly interference. Matt and Dylan’s HEA is was well earned!

There is absolutely no characterization or character description in this book. I have no idea what anybody is supposed to look like. Their personality traits are very thinly sketched. They could be anybody because they're just not defined characters. I don't even know which one was which and I just finished the book.

The book also purports to be dual POV, but both characters have such a similar narrating voice, I never had any idea whose chapter I was reading. People are always so keen on this dual POV business, but it's usually awful like this was. What is the point if the voices aren't distinct? I would rather read third person than this kind of garbage.

I would like to also point out to all English and Australian people that American bacon does not make good sandwiches on its own. If it's not with something like lettuce and tomato or a burger, it's not good. It's not the same kind of bacon y'all have.

This was a very different pacing than I'm used to as we don't start with the "beginning" of a relationship, but that made it not just refreshing but also appealing. I liked it a lot

Demon Hunter is Matt and Dylan story, these two are already together but they are keeping their relationship a secret. Dylan is a hacker and also works for the collective, Matt and Dylan were hooking up at first and now they have almost a year together. Dylan had his reasons for keeping their relationship a secret, but when Matt ends up hurt Dylan realizes that they need to let their friends and family know about them, he was afraid of losing him.

Marc was definitely the savior, I love him! Lol… as a higher demon he has a few abilities that Matt is going to need to survive, I love the interaction between all the hunters and Marc in the same space.
We also get to meet another Higher Demon, Raum and Marc have the same view about humans and his personality traits is about the same as Marc. He was part of the team and help Matt, Dylan, Ian and Marc in a mission.

I like the plot of this book, Matt’s attack and how are the people who commit the attack, way and the consequences of their crimes, this was a very entertaining book. I loved the epilogue!! Looking forward for more of this serie!

Love this world and was glad to be back. Dylan and Matt were the cutest couple and so in love. Their relationship encountered a few hiccups but they had a strong foundation so I was never worried. This was more of a “whodunnit” as the group tries to figure out who attacked Matt and what their motivations were. I loved how everyone worked together - even Marc hahaha. There were some truly hilarious moments with Marc in this one, I was so happy to see so much of him. He’s seriously the best and I already miss him!

Ok and how cute was the epilogue? I may have shed a few happy tears 🥹

I listened to the audiobook of this, like I did with the first one, and it was another great performance by Greg Boudreaux. I’ve listened to him narrate a wide variety of books at this point and he never misses!

Brotherhood, battles and boyfriends... The Collective has all three!
Demon Hunter is the second in the series focusing on best friends turned lovers Dylan and Matt.

I jumped into this one without having read Higher Demon but it was easy to do. Louisa doesn't miss a beat, she jumps directly into this story by giving you a little background on how Dylan and Matt started as fwb then evolved into more. I appreciated how their relationship didn't drag on but wished there was a little more angst to their storyline.

As a character driven reader this felt a little too plot heavy (odd thing to say I know). Demon hunter felt more paranormal mystery rather than paranormal romance. Part of this could be due to the fact their relationship felt solidified from chapter 1. However the bromance often outshined the romance.

One thing I will give to Louisa is her comedy is my style and the audio narration brough characters like Marc and Raum to life.

The first few chapters of this book had me on absolute tenterhooks. Matty and Dylan are established, sweet, and so very dumb about each other. Luckily, Marc saves the day, although there are some surprising side effects to his saving. His bond with Ian still seems to be a secret from the others as well. Dylan uses his superior tech skills to track down a trafficking network alongside Raum, a new demon. Seeing him melt down over Marc's ancient computer setup reminded me a little bit of helping my parents with their old computer. Even more than Marc and his interactions with demons in the previous book, this story really made everyday demons very relatable. Looking forward to Gus and Raum getting stories! And also, the very final chapter was TS perfection.

Eeep, I have to gush about all the Marc moments in this book. They had me laughing, snorting, and sighing in joy. I missed him and will immediately be rereading Higher Demon right after this. Amazing Marc moments aside, Matt and Dylan are plenty amazing on their own.

“Being with Matt has taught me that living with the fear is better than being without him, and that’s a concept easily expanded to include his brothers.
And Marc.
God help me.”

Sorry not sorry, I couldn’t resist this quote because Marc and also because I really enjoyed learning more about Dylan and who he is. Super smart, a master of code, and absolutely someone who can hack my heart. It’s no wonder Matt, lovable Matt, is head over heels for him, and then some. I smiled at the goofiness of these two, and really just want to hug the heck out of them. And the surprises laid out in this have me wondering so many fantastical thoughts. I can’t wait to see who’s next to conquer love and how the story plays out.

This is book 2 in the Collective series and features Matt and Dylan. They have been in a relationship for about a year but due to a traumatic event in Dylan’s past, he didn’t want this information to be known. When Dylan called Matt to find out where he was, he spoke to a doctor who told him that Matt was in the hospital. After getting her number and calling Ian and the rest of the brothers, they go and see him. Marc uses his mojo to get the three of them in ICU. I love this author’s books and am so happy when she releases a new one. Great world building and we got to meet a new higher demon named Raum. There is a new storyline that popped up and I cannot wait to see where it goes. I cannot wait for the next one to come out.

What a crazy whirlwind of a story! Matt and Dylan have been secretly in a relationship due to some issues Dylan has with losing family. But as life often happens, an accident occurs that quickly changes Dylan's mind and he is brought into the family fold. As they all work together to uncover the latest mystery Matt and Dylan work through changes in their relationship. These two are relationship goals! I hope this is not the end of this series.

I am obsessed with this series, these characters and ESPECIALLY Marc... and Ian... and Matt... Dylan... Norval... okay all!! My favourite thing about Louisa is how the books have interesting plots along with romance - and the plot is the focus. This made me cry in the beginning and then I was SO MAD. Anyway, this was a great read and I for sure hope we have more books coming because I need it!

How to slowly build the tension ! This was unexpected and I just loved it. Dylan and Matt were secretly dating (which is truly shocking with Norman always popping everywhere). I loved their bond, their connection, the protectiveness, the trust they have.

Also what a plot, I’m really excited to see how it will go in the next one, but this one was definitely a preparation for what is to come. And I just love Marc, he always has the best lines !

Truly enjoyed this story !! I don’t want to say too much because spoilers 😆

I received an ARC Copy of this book from the author, this review is from my own thoughts 😍
