Min-Maxing My TRPG Build in Another World Light Novel #9.1

Min-Maxing My TRPG Build in Another World: Volume 9 Canto I

Rate this book
Erich and his party (not that Siegfried would admit to being a part of it) have made it back to Marsheim from the ichor maze, battered and bruised but all in one piece. However, the plucky munchkin’s luck is as bad as ever—a looming shadow threatens to end his adventuring career. With a little “nudge” from his oldest friend, Erich takes up a new scheme to rescue not just his own future, but those of all the friends and allies he’s drawn into his wake. Erich’s a scrappy young rookie no it’s time for everyone’s favorite min-maxer to put aside build optimization and foster the kind of power you can’t find on a character sheet!

Bit of a grim story, Erich is not exactly happy with events in Marsheim. He might prefer clean cut tales of heroics, but life does not cater adventures to the tastes of the adventurer unlike the game master would in his previous life. Still, Erich is not going to be pushed into a role he does not want and with a bit of outside help he might even succeed even if the adventure for now is not going to be particularly glorious.

As always, solid world design (especially in regards to making non-humans unique and interesting) and great characters with a nice amount of trpg references that clearly show the author knows their games even if I question some of the games he played based on his reminiscences. Also as always, there is a tendency to overexplain, which in turn makes it a somewhat long read, even boring at times, but for me that is overshadowed by the good things of the book. Obviously, it is the start of an arc, and although not a cliff hanger ending, it still ends in the middle of the plot.

Still, a good read and looking forward to canto II.

Less traditional adventuring this time, and more networking, clan building, and warring on drugs. Erich continues to climb the stairs to adulthood (Spidussy, I choose you!). As always, the translator likes to flex his vocabulary by throwing in the occasional super obscure word and the world-building is rich. Overall, it was pretty good, but sadly now have to wait for part 2.
