Hell and damnation! The Bruja is missing! When the most powerful witch alive disappears without a trace, Norah, her 17-year-old niece, decides to investigate. But upon entering her aunt's manor, she interrupts a summoning ritual and finds herself face to face with the devil... Or half of him, anyway, as he has been cut in two and is now stuck in a pentagram. Unable to return to Hell without Norah's help, Lucifer agrees to assist her in finding the Bruja—a devilish task when you're the most feared and hated being on the planet!
Devil On Her Shoulder is a nice little story about a young witch who doesn't have magic, and her accidental team up with the Devil as she tries to find her missing aunt. The story is pretty straightforward, with all sorts of worldbuilding twists and turns; however, the pacing was so fast. New characters and ideas and backstories were being introduced left and right so quickly that I completely lost track of some characters and what they meant to the story overall.
The art here is really lovely, however. It's clean and has great energy, with some lovely color work helping it along. I think part of the issue I had with the pacing came from the choice of storyboarding in the art, however; again, so much was happening on every page that it became very overwhelming at times.
Overall this was a nice read, and while it could have used a about 30 more pages to allow the story room to breathe, it was solid and had some beautiful art.

OH MY GOODNESS, HOW CUTE. I absolutely adored this comic! It was the perfect, cute, witchy standalone read that I could devour in one day, in one or two brief sittings, and get a full story, a fun ride, and closure at the end!
THE SETTING was brilliant, from the citadel in hell to the topsy-turvy amusement park ride that it presented as its assembly-line of suffering. I got a huge kick out of seeing climate change skeptics being roasted as 'climate skeptikebabs' for demons to eat, and learning Ryan Gosling sold his soul to become irresistible is so funny! Crittertown was beautifully illustrated and the witch academy was just stunning, even if the staff and students absolutely sucked!
THE ART was absolutely beautiful to be sure. Such cute illustrations, magical character designs for both humans and monsters, and the imps and familiars were so cute! Norah was beautiful and all the other witches looked so cool, their sense of style is just great. So many cool outfits! Multiple spreads had me lost zooming in to absorb and admire every last detail. I had a lot of fun with it the locations and set design in particular. So cute and cozy, serving whimsical wholesome Halloween vibes all the way through.
THE PROTAGANIST Norah was cool, sweet, and sympathetic. She managed to be sad and kind of gentle without ever seeming weak or naive. I always felt centered with her on the page and when she was out of view I was always eager to get back to her journey.
Ultimately the weakest part of this was the witch coven storyline. An extra 50-60 pages to flesh out the inner coven politics, witch backstories, and social dynamics and maybe give Norah some more interactions with her coven and classmates would be great. I liked the story but ultimately resolving the plot of Norah being outcast, bullied, and mobbed by the coven did not include them actually being shamed for their behavior or having to reflect on it at all. It's a happy ending because she magically gets cured and stops being an outcast, therefore they stop bullying her - not because bullying outcasts is wrong or they learn to stop socially ostracizing people for dumb reasons.
It's like she got her happy ending because she changed and 'fixed' herself to make other people embrace her. I just didn't love that her conformity meant they never had to actually be held accountable. They're going to be nice to her now because she fits in, so their years of bullying get forgotten or forgiven? I have no clue. I'm glad for Norah all the same, but it left a sour taste in my mouth however unintentional it was.
That said...I would love a sequel, a spin-off, anything else set in this world. Norah and Satan have so much chemistry, I want them to explore their dynamic. I think she might be the only person he could actually love, and the only one willing to put up with him, lol.
Also Norah's aunts deserve a prequel for sure. Loved the relationship between them. We all have a cool aunt or two we're ride or die for. Cool aunts make the world go around.
5/5 stars for sure, a perfect short graphic novel for anybody who likes illustration, Halloween, witches, or cartoons in general. Just stylish, cute, fun, and personable. Should receive a TV adaptation FOR SURE. Netflix, where you at?

this was such a cute story! Recommended for anyone who is into cozy fantasies. The illustrations of both the world and the characters themselves were absolutely fantastic, and the tiny bits of modern day references hilarious! The magical species (Demons, witches, and souls) was also such a brilliant idea, as they made for a very interesting set of characters. My only complaint is that the story did feel a tiny bit confusing at some parts but other than that this was such a great spring read, appropriate for readers of all ages :)

*4.5 stars
This is a graphic novel that follows a girl, Norah, who’s aunt is the most powerful witch alive. Her aunt goes missing and Norah goes to look for her with the help of a surprising person.. The devil.
This was a lot of fun. The art style and character designs were what immediately grabbed my attention but the story really kept me interested. It was an adventure that had a lot of twists and turns that was really enjoyable to read about. I also thought the dynamic between Norah and the devil was interesting!
When the most powerful witch of the clan disappears, her teen niece sets on a task to find her. With no magical powers, a demon at the door and a conquest on the way, this does seem like a little too much on the young one's shoulders. Nevertheless, a strong will is all it takes to move forward and face the devil!
This 100+ pages graphic novel felt like a perfect length to me. The graphics were beautifully designed and the witchy genre made it more catchy for me. The book was engaging, perfectly lengthen and fast-paced - without skipping the details. Which to me sounds like a perfect read.
tl;dr Beautiful art and a straightforward adventure story about an out-of-place teen trying to get her family back.
About Norah is a young witch with no magic, a tough place to be when your aunt is the world's most powerful witch. But when her aunt disappears, Norah might be the only one who can find her - with a little help from the devil Lucifer himself. A full color graphic novel.
Thoughts This book moves at a fairly brisk pace with a lot of world-building explained as you go. The world itself is so vast that we only get surface-level information, but it's largely enough to keep track of the adventure that our wayward heroes are on. Norah is way in over her head, but her determination to get her aunt back keeps the story focused as well. Lucifer is an interesting amalgam of various trickster types, but the story is way less about him than it is about Norah. The art is highly detailed and expressive with a very soothing color palette, and the character designs are all very appealing. Overall, a lovely oneshot for anyone looking for cozy witchy vibes.

OMG what an amazing comic book it was. "Devil on Her Shoulder" tells a story of Norah who is a witch without magic. One day her beloved aunt dissapears and in order to find her she must make a deal with Lucifer himself.
I am absolutely in love with graphic side to this comic book. Everything is so lovely and detailed. It feels like a fairytale. The plot is pretty simple but characters are funny and it's really easy to like them. There are references to our reality that I really enjoyed. I had so much fun reading Norah's adventures and I will definitely keep my eye on this author.
I received a copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Let’s start with the art. The style is cute and simplistic and the artist’s individuality breathes life into every scene. I loved the designs of the buildings and the main character’s aunt. She’s the perfect modern witch—a bit creepy but still elegant. Sadly the layout was not great. Some panels were too small to read and some contained too much text. Overall, the text felt like it outweighed the art but didn’t contribute much to the plot.
The story has big issues. The world struck me as very detailed, but a lot of the implied themes are never explored. We don’t find out why witches are damned and we don’t learn much about the hierarchy in heaven/hell, although this is a central plot element. The towns don’t seem organic either since we don’t learn how the world works. Are there continents? Different types of witches? Magic doors? I felt like I was kept in the dark far too much.
The main character was a too bland for my taste. She didn’t have many traits (apart from being anxious) and accepted what was happening without hesitation. The story tells us that the MC has no magic—yet, we never find out what implications this has for her life. In fact, she seems rather OK with it? Also, her aunt is a “bruja” and the story never reveals what that title entails.
In short, this was just another mediocre witch story. Apart from the art, the book was not great.
I received a copy from Netgalley in exchange for reviewing the book, that does not influence my opinion.
This book is stunning. It's what drew me to read it. The plot sounded like so much fun!
The book follows Norah, a witch with no powers. She encounters Lucifer in an effort to find her missing aunt.
Unfortunately, once I got to the content it felt like the author had a 300 page plan that got squished into 100. Everything happened at lightning speed, the pacing felt inorganic.
While I do read YA from time to time, this went younger than YA for me. I absolutely loved Norah, but I felt myself wanting the author to take things up a notch with the story.
Thanks to the author and the publisher for having this title as a "read now" on NetGalley.
First of all, I think this is the most beautiful color palette I have ever seen in a graphic novel. These colors just work amazingly together and that's captured my attention at first. The art in general is incredible, it's so detailed even in the wide shots there are so many little objects or details, I loved it!
I really had fun reading this graphic novel! But I wanted more, I feel like the ending was rushed and the big plot explanation didn't really make sense. It got me by surprise and I couldn't properly follow it.
A graphic novel that tells a captivating story. It kept me guessing as to the real antagonists, or the plot twists, from start to finish. All the while feeding me fantastic and unique artwork. The ending was wholesome despite having to do with demons and witches, and it tied many ends in a cute way.
Definitely recommend it!

A story about a magicless witch who is forced to work with the devil in order to find her missing aunt. While the story itself is intriguing, the artwork is definitely its strongest point. From the details, the color palette, and the character designs. The art gave the story a nice muted whimsical tone.
For the story, while interesting, the pacing was a bit off. I felt things were happening too fast, so much so, that I got confused at times. The story should've been longer, to allow time to flesh out the characters and storyline. I also wish there was more worldbuilding, as the designs were amazing. While this was by no means amazing, the story is still pretty interesting, and if anything, at least it's visually appealing.
I read graphic novel after so many years and it was such an enthralling experience. I loved the graphics and storytelling in this book. When the most powerful witch suddenly disappears, Norah, her 17 years old niece ventures on an odyssey to find her. She summons a devil and make a deal with him to find her aunt Bruja. The book has revolutionary spell, ritual, summoning, hell, witches and damnation.
Thank you to @netgalley for providing me with a copy of Devil On Her Shoulder.
This is not what I usually read, but I still wanted to give it a try. I think the drawings are exquisite and the story itself is interesting. The Devil is a very fun character, and I liked the references to pop culture such as Ryan Gosling and Harry Potter (crypto-currency as well). Also, how funny is it to actually have a broomstick driver's license ? It was fast paced and easy to follow, and I'd recommend this to a teen looking for a cute adventure, with some secrets, betrayals and banter.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital copy of this book in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.
The summary of this book was quite intriguing, but I ended up being more captivated by the art. While the art is gorgeous, the story could have used more development with the characters and the world. For example, there were some characters, like the witch council, who were felt like they were kind of shoved in at the end to advance the story. Things like this caused the story to feel stunted and rushed. That aside, it was still a pleasant read.
A light and entertaining graphic novel about a clumsy, magicless witch who gets caught up in a conspiracy to overthrow Lucifer and is forced to work with him to save her aunt.
The drawing is gorgeous and I loved the color palette. It's a story with a lot of potential, but I would have liked it to be longer to have some more worldbuilding and character development. I had the feeling that we went from one scenario to another too fast, and that's a shame. I think the end of the story requires the reader to have become more attached to the characters than they had the chance to.
All things considered, it's still a very good graphic novel, with vignettes full of detail and color.
*Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC, all views and opinions are my own.*
2.5 stars I'm almost unsure of this one. I liked the art style and premise, but the story itself felt very rushed at times. The pop culture references were also not a hit with me as it takes me out of the story.
Thanks to Europe Comics and NetGalley for the eARC.
[ ARC ] Devil On Her Shoulder written by Sandra Cardona and Cédric Mayen
About: ● The most powerful witch alive disappears and her seventeen year old niece takes it upon herself to investigate
Notes (SPOILERS - only in this section): ● okay, but the devil teaching a 17 year old witch how to fly their broom. Yes I love that.
Positives: ● The artist makes the difference of Norah compared to the other students clear with use of hair colour (page 5) ● creative use of different characters having different levels of verbalism ● so many details and I love the thought that went into them (Lego treadmills on p40) ● not much of it was expected ● wholesome and adorable, despite literally having the devil as a character
Negative: ● only negative is that I want more
Favourite quotes: ● "nothing like a magic kiss to heal little boo-boos" - page 8 ● " 'but you must have some ambition. Let's see... want to be rich, famous, respected?' 'What for? I don't think it would make me any happier. I just want to find my aunt.' " ● "Don't try to fight us, kid. After all, hell's not so bad." - page 89 ● "I can't make any promises, because magic is like life: unpredictable and full of uncertainty. Yet we have no choice but to trust in it." - page 108
Fun YA action fantasy graphic novel, with great illustrations. This moves away from the witch schooling trope with the heroine running off to save her aunt that disappeared and finding a lord of demons in her house instead. Starts an adventure rocking high and low in a beautifully strange fantasy world. This is very fast paced and I would have liked it a lot better if I was in the intended age group (13 to 16) as it doesn't go into anything in depth. Highly recommend it to teens who love the anime "Mary and the witch flower" and stories about witches, magic, and powerless girls growing into their strength.
Devil on Her Shoulder was such a cute little read! The artwork was really detailed and Norah was a fun, likeable character. Her interactions with the devil had me laughing out loud and then having to explain to the people around me why I was laughing so hard. Seriously, that tickling bit had me cracking up! The story was cute and I would definitely pick up the next for more adventures with her and backpack boy. Solid 4 star read for me.
A découvrir !
A kind of humorous adventure/mystery/fantasy story with demons, missing witch aunts, mysterious origins, all the hits. The art in this was really beautiful, and the coloring!

Rating: 6/10 – 3 stars of 5 Genre: Fantasy Graphic Novel
This graphic novel talks about a 17 years old, non-magic witch who has to make a deal with Lucifer to find her auntie, the Bruja, who has disappear.
I loved so much the graphic design and I liked Norah as the main character, and her relationship with the rest. There are some little plot twist that make the story better.
It appealed me by its cover and description, but I kept reading because of how adorable and cute it was.
I can say I loved the artwork, but story is maybe for younger people. Some things were happening really fast and the author leaves a lot of things without explanation. Maybe I would love this ebook more if art were a little darker and story a little more adult, but that’s really cool for a middle grade audience.
However, it’s a stunning graphic novel where we can find a girl who’s trying to do her best to be like the rest. Sometimes, being different makes you special on your own.

A fun story that’ll also make you break in cold sweat - it’s only natural, because one of the main characters is Lucifer himself!
Like any important witch, La Bruja wants to make an impression at the Fall Sabbath, so she prepares her rejuvenation potion, locks her pets in the house, seals off the exits to all the parallel universes, and takes off on her broom through the clouds. Two weeks later, the abandoned pets are dying of thirst, so Bruja's familiar tries to use an old spell book to ward off the Horn of Plenty. At the same time, Norah, the witch's niece, decides to break down the house’s door, alarmed by her aunt's long absence - and stumbles upon... the Devil, (half-)conjured by the familiar. As you may have already guessed from the title, the Devil ends up hidden in Norah's backpack, the two of them joining forces in the long investigation that follows, sort of an “Alice in Witchland” full of zany and absurd situations.
This “complete edition” builds upon the first volume, adding 67 more pages and bringing the story to a nice and tidy conclusion. Sandra Cardona's art is a bit uneven - feminine, playful and filled with details, yet a little more rushed in the second part of the book and in the filler pages (you’ll know which ones they are by how empty the backgrounds look). As for Cedric Mayen’s story, it’s funny, starts mysterious and YA, only to end up more... childish. I have a feeling this was supposed to be a trilogy that ended up as a diptych that turned into a single volume, so everything had to be wrapped asap and as clear as possible. Well, mission accomplished! I only hope these two will be given enough time.. next time :) to truly demonstrate their skills.
I have already read the first volume, but I received the complete edition from netgalley dot com in exchange for a honest review. That does not influence my opinion in any way.
I would like to thank Europe Comics and NetGalley for an eARC of this title in exchange for an honest review.
Note: I had read the first part of this comic and reviewed it favorably, this is a bind -up that includes the parts I had already read and the conclusion which is new to me.
There is a lot to like about this comic. The art is really beautiful, complex and visually interesting. The pace of the story is fast in an enjoyable way (and although I will be arguing about the story feeling rushed, I do think that a more complete story with the same pacing would truly work) Also, the characters and locations are all super creative and inspire the reader to continue to read.
Having said all that, I truly feel that this wasn't a good story. The author fails to deliver enough of a set up to get the reader invested in the whirlwind plot. I was often confused as to why I should care about anything that was happening (which could have been resolved by making the story go a little slower, or just adding a bit of background and/or substance). There are A LOT of characters in this tiny story -- all interesting to look at and with unique personalities, but ultimately devoid of meaning... the story tells you what their purpose is, but it doesn't get you to feel it.
The ending felt like just an ex-machina solution, with not enough at stake for the reader to feel any catharsis. If you are a fan of good comic art, this is absolutely an example, but I wouldn't pick it up for anything else.
