Coauthored by Dayne Gingrich, top senior professional pickleball player and renowned mental performance coach; and Jill Martin, an attorney turned personal trainer and pickleball fanatic, the book follows their year-long coaching relationship in which Jill seeks to become mentally dominant on and off the court. In each chapter, Dayne explores the what, why, and how of mental performance strategies he has used in his athletic and coaching career. If you're searching for a book that delves into the psychological aspect of pickleball and goes beyond just techniques and strategies, this one is a game-changer. The authors masterfully explores the mental tools required to elevate your pickleball game, making it a must-read for players who understand that greatness starts from within.
The book breaks down the mindset of a champion into digestible pieces, covering topics like mental toughness, emotional resilience, visualization, and staying present on the court. It’s not just about winning but about fostering a growth mindset—embracing challenges, learning from mistakes, and pushing past self-imposed limitations.
One of the standout sections highlights the importance of maintaining composure during high-pressure games. Whether it’s dealing with the frustration of unforced errors or responding to an opponent’s unexpected skill, the author provides insightful advice on staying mentally strong. Furthermore, the book emphasizes the significance of positivity—not just as a tool for self-motivation but as a way to strengthen partnerships in doubles play.
Excellent book that’s challenges many different levels of complacency, as it provokes the reader to become more conscious of controlling the controllables (of which there are far more things that are in our control than we may be currently aware). I can honestly say that this book has changed my outlook on both tournament and rec play. I’ve learn to enjoy the game, even when either my partner or myself is playing poorly. The principles shared will help you become a better all around player - on and off the court.
Life is a process. A journey. Many ups and downs. Pickleball is like that. This book illustrates some of the ups and downs that you go through in this sport (and life) and how to manage them. Great read.
A great sports psychology book with humour and wisdom for those who play pickleball as well as those who don't. There are so many lessons and strategies that can be applied to other sports and life. That said, I am excited to implement some of these strategies on my own pickleball journey.
Lots of great tips - especially liked the chapter on confidence. For some, this may include more info than you currently are seeking. There are definitely nuggets that will aid players at every level.
This is exactly what I was missing in my game. I’ve been hovering at the 3.0 play level for awhile and this book cracked the seal on my success barrier.
This is an insightful approach to pickleball. And the approaches suggested by the authors are applicable to many other sports and even non-athletic endeavors. Well done!
