Ok it's now 4/24/22 and I'm writing this review ... In NU there were some comments that said this was cheating but I don't agree. Sure FL is already the noble consort of the emperor, but dude kidnapped her ON HER WEDDING DAY (to a guy she didn't want to marry but had to because it was an edict from the empress dowager...) - the emperor takes her from his little brother, traps her IN A TEMPLE for three months, won't let her run away, WON'T EVEN LET HER KILL HERSELF, constantly rapes her, then is like "hey if I sterilize you will you be willing to enter the palace?" unspoken is "if you say no I'll kill you." So ... like. Children. That's not a fucking relationship. That's a crime.
So I have no problem with her finding a[nother] dude. AND the reason why she does it is to save her life because she knows based on the previous life/experiences of the host, this trash ass man is going to sacrifice her and she wants a way out.

I understand ML misunderstanding her at first - way too easy - but once he falls for her - once they have sex (because he's fallen for her) he is OMG all the way in 10,000%.
I'm definitely not mad I read this book, might even re-read it, but it wouldn't be one of the first/top ones I recommend ... though I would recommend it to people. With the above caveats though. [I mean if someone is determined to call this cheating I can't help them but ... dude. No.]
I liked that the women were largely clear eyed in this book.... *sigh* though not really the imperial women/empress dowager and the princess - though she was unfortunate too.

C103 Honestly it’s delightful ML’s parents have a loving relationship & are great parents. And it’s sad how rare this is especially for a c-novel.
But 🫥 does his dad die in battle? (Also just lol that extra turning of the knife TAE was reluctant to even let ML’s dad go to the frontline. Why don’t you go then you stupid useless fucking fuck.)

C110 that was satisfying but too soft - TAE took basically zero hits while ML’s dad is probably dead. At least ML & FL for now are safe.

C114 welp I didn’t like the cousin but was impressed with her death/how she was decisive. Also these fucking trash ass men. And especially the goddamn Xiao family.

Lol almost an aside but - they finally killed the horse to get the guy! (I mean just in any book/show/movie)

Awwww them having a daughter. And ML’s parents’ story was so sweet. Lol ML & FL’s kids got kicked to the side (tho it seems one/both were married and had kids?) so ML’s mom was pretty blessed ❤️

This is mostly a historical novel with a hint of transmigration and rebirth. I say it's just a hint because our female lead, Li Zhi, mentions only a couple times in passing that she's from modern times, and it's not really important to the overall story. And rather than rebirth, it's more like she has a long dream where she dreams of what will happen in 3 years and learns that eventually the emperor will force her to commit suicide. To avoid this fate, she comes up with a plan to seduce the emperor's cousin and trusted general, Pei Ji.

This novel isn't for everyone, since the female lead purposefully seduces another male outside of her marriage with the emperor. Anyone who's not okay with the main character cheating and having an affair should stay far away from this story. However, it makes sense why she's doing so, because clearly the emperor doesn't really care about her, even though he claims to love and treasure her. It's not just his actions in the future that belie this but even his actions in the present, where he knowingly lets her name be smeared on multiple occasions and doesn't do anything to clear up her reputation. So the FL knows that when push comes to shove, her rightful husband won't do anything and she needs to find someone else to protect her, hence why she targets Pei Ji.

I thought the author did a good job in fleshing out both main characters as well as their relationship. For much of the story, Li Zhi treats their relationship more like a contractual relationship, where they each get something out of it. For her, it's knowing that Pei Ji has her back and can help her achieve her goal of escaping the palace and obtaining freedom. Even later on, when she knows about Pei Ji's feelings for her and realizes she likes him back, I appreciate that she doesn't just rush into the relationship but takes the time to consider whether it's worth it.

And from Pei Ji's end, even though their physical relationship starts because he's drugged up, he slowly gets addicted to Li Zhi and has trouble staying away. At the same time though, he's very conflicted between his loyalty to the emperor, which has been ingrained in him for 20+ years, and the increasingly erratic way the emperor is acting as well as the callousness with which the emperor treats Li Zhi. Pei Ji's inner struggle is well written and grows more pronounced as the story progresses, until he finally makes the decision to break all ties with the emperor.

The story moved along at a nice pace and I was never bored. Most of the focus is on the development of our main characters' relationship, but there are events happening along the way within the imperial harem, with the FL's family, etc. The bit about the FL's younger cousin scheming to join the harem based on her resemblance to the FL was interesting.

Overall, there was less face slapping than I expected (and wanted). Everything happens pretty smoothly and the author doesn't make a big fuss when bad things happen to the people who wronged the FL. Even the moment when the FL reveals the true nature of her relationship with Pei Ji in front of the emperor was less anticlimactic than I expected, as they don't really get time to throw it in the emperor's face before they escape.

I'm giving it 3 stars because I felt like there were way too many scenes of the ML secretly visiting the FL in the middle of the night. I get that it's up to the author's discretion, but as the beloved noble consort of the emperor, I found it super unrealistic that the ML was able to get away with visiting her as often as he did. Also it got old after a while, since it's always the same thing happening. There weren't any scenes where the ML almost ran into the emperor to keep things interesting. Also, I didn't understand why the FL was so eager to sleep with the ML every time they met when she still viewed their relationship as transactional. The way she kept embracing him during every visit makes it seem like she's fallen for him, when she really hasn't.

Overall, it was a satisfying read though, and I blew through it in 2 days / less than 24 hours.

Allora mi dispiace perché il libro é tradotto in modo meraviglioso ma la storia del tradimento? Assolutamente no. Non sono riuscita a superare proprio alcune scene come l’essere quasi scoperta con i segni del rapporto sessuale. Oppure ancora avere un rapporto e nella scena successiva baciarsi l’imperatore. Non lo so…. Non è per me si poteva costruire in modo diverso. Poi parliamoci chiaro, non c’è nessuna possibilità che un personaggio come il suo possa essere ancora vivo all’epoca né tanto meno essere una consorte. Sorry
