Titanikas: 1912 m. balandžio 14 d.

Rate this book

My 12 year old self would have enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed it as a 59 year old bloke. A great coffee table book. It’s as big and impressive as the subject matter.

Titanic by David Ross not only has great photos, drawings and images of real historical artefacts, it is written very nicely indeed. The author starts with providing background on transatlantic travel, the owners and management of White Star Lines, the company responsible for the building of Titanic (and 2 other giant, luxury ships – Olympic and Britannic), by the construction and engineering information, the voyage, the sinking and the aftermath.

Construction details were impressive and fascinating (…..I was going to say riveting – but I thought better of it). The scale of the engineering was overwhelming. For some reason, whenever I am exposed to details of massive engineering projects I get a funny feeling in my tummy, as I couldn’t imagine being responsible for such a project. The size of the boilers was incomprehensible – they used to expunge 100 tons of ash a day (a 100 tons of ash!!!), the ship carried 7000 tons of coal – yikes!! The electrical power generator was the size of plant to power a large town or a city at the time. The company achieved a comparatively low number of occupational injuries during construction - 8 workmen were killed and 28 seriously injured (out of 4,000 workers), this was considered to be a comparatively low number, it still sounds a lot doesn’t it?

There are approximately 165,000 workers employed in shipyards in the U.S. Between 2011 and 2017, there were at least 45 fatal accidents (4.0 per 100,000) among shipyard workers,8 higher than the rate for all U.S. workers. (Ref: CDC https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/programs/cm...)

The fitting out of this beast was a massive project too. Edwardian fittings and furniture – nothing was spared for first class (325 passengers), second class (285) was comfortable too – and I was surprised to see the relatively good-ish standard for third class (a noisy swarm of 706 punters).

There were so many interesting bits of information provided – such as the coordinates where the dramas started happening 42N 50W. This sent me racing to (well not really racing, I only had to move my finger) to Google Maps and check out the area for myself.

It was unusually cold, icebergs were breaking off the east coast of North America frequently (do you know little bergs are called ‘grunters’?). Titanic was required to change course (southwards), but it wasn’t enough and they were unfortunate enough to glance one, after trying to take evasive action – there were a number of eyewitness accounts described, as there were of the sinking. This made the even so very personal. The water temperature was a lethal minus 2 degrees celcius, the sea was also very calm - making it difficult to see any icebergs.

Controversies were described, such as the ‘fact’ of one of the owners pushing the captain to speed up to break the transatlantic record, the insufficient number of life-boats, some decision made by the crew at the time. All made the more personal, by photo’s of the people involved, evidentiary documents and more.

I highly recommend this, I couldn’t put it down. I would expect the large, hardcover edition would be a masterpiece. The balance of text and graphics is perfect – as is the detail provided, also the details of the people involved.

A real eye-opener of a terribly tragic event.

yes, i was one of those kids with a titanic obsession, spanning from ages 11 to 13 approximately. and yes, i couldn’t stop thinking of how much i would have loved this as a pre-teen who couldn’t have enough of this story. not simply because of how accurately it showcases the ship, as well as its inception and all the work that thousands of people put into it, but also because of how absolutely fantastic the visual aspect of it was. i had never seen this many photos of the titanic, or of the people who boarded and never came back; there was something inexplicably mystifying about ross’s archival work and the way he threaded it all together in such an apparently effortless way. i can’t wait to buy a physical copy of this and just leaf through its pages whenever i feel like diving back (no pun intended) into the story of rms titanic!

thank you to netgalley for providing me with an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I love everything to do with the Titanic, it has fascinated me since I found out about it, and it helps that I was born 70 years to the day it launched! That has intrigued me even more as there are always documentaries or book releases that come out around the time of my birthday.

I always love to get my hands on any new releases on the topic and as soon as I saw the cover for this one and read the blurb, I knew it would be a book I would really enjoy – and I am sure it will become one that is treasured by many other too as it is packed with photographs

I loved the layout and the commentary that was added to the photos too. It was a very easy and enjoyable book to read and the tragedy that unfolded was covered really well, along with the aftermath but I loved that the focus really was on the ship herself

It is 5 stars from me for this one, very highly recommended – a fabulous book for Titanic fans, social history enthusiasts and anyone who has an interest in ships and this era too as whilst the book is predominantly on the ship, you also get am insight on the differences between classes and social history too

I’ve had a lifelong fascination about the Titanic and have read several fictional and non-fiction books about it. This is a well written, informational book detailing facts about the Titanic. And of course the historical photos add to the presentation. The book has sections covering; the planning and building, The Voyage, The Collision, The Lifeboats and The Aftermath. I thought it was interesting that drawings for the sinking were already being put in the newspapers before any witnesses or survivors reached land. Of course more is known now that the wreckage has been discovered, mapped and some artifacts recovered. This is great for the history buff and absolutely the kind of book I would check out to learn more from a library. Thank you to NetGalley and Amber Books Ltd., for the temporary ebook in exchange for a review.

Although this book was written more as an informational book for studying, it was a really interesting read for fun. I learned so much more than I already knew about the titanic, but there’s still more for me to learn. Some sections were slower, moving than others, but the book as a whole was generally fast paced, and that was a big hit with me. It kept me interested almost the entire time, and every few pages of reading there was a pause for pictures. That made it fun.

A fun pictorial about the Titanic. Actual pictures as well as drawings about the ship & it’s sinking. Well done & a quick read. I wasn’t all that interested in the first part about building the ship. The rest was amazing.

This might me be one of the most fun ways to interest someone in the topic of Titanic. The story of the ship and her sinking is very well told and all the photos included were such a pleasure to browse through.
And if you're already a devoted Titanic buff like me, you'll still enjoy learning some new facts and seeing some (or a lot of) photos you haven't seen before.

Huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher Amber Books for sending me the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!

Nic bardziej mylnego.

Titanic is a riveting book with 180+ photos and information of the largest luxury cruise liner which sunk after hitting an iceberg on the nightmarish night of April 14, 1912. Over 1,500 perished on the "unsinkable" Titanic. Not only are there photos of the construction phase (propellers, engines, bulkheads, hydraulics and builders themselves) but also some of the elegant rooms, decks, posters, maps, witness drawings, the iceberg, boarding passes, name lists and dinner menus. But most poignant of all are those of the officers, staff and the travelers from the third-class migrants to first-class Edwardian aristocrats. Author David Ross discusses this snapshot of Edwardian class structure in miniature. Unlike many other liners the third class passengers had beds and good food but of course nothing remotely in a similar realm as the obscenely elegant first-class suites and public spaces. Some passengers professed to premonitions and feelings of dread before the voyage. It is impossible to comprehend the terror they faced when death was inevitable, regardless of stature.

What happened that night and how, reactions of the officers and passengers, the lack of safety measures in place, heroism and survivor stories are also highlighted. Conjecture and finger pointing still swirl. There is also a chapter on films, dives and the necessity of conservation.

Those readers enthralled by the Titanic disaster ought to read this fascinating, moving and harrowing book. Though I have read many on the topic, there is always more to learn and reflect upon.

My sincere thank you to Amber Books Ltd. and NetGalley for the privilege of reading this phenomenal book!

When people praised the captain of the Titanic for going down with his ship, George Bernard Shaw wrote tartly: 'So did the cat'. The story of this amazing ship has become legendary, and the subject of countless books, novels and films. It is one of endless fascination.

David Ross conducts a comprehensive forensic examination of the ship, and the tragic disaster in this book. He explores the structure of the ship, the class distinction, the timing of the disaster, the conduct of the officers and crew and the enquiries. The most interesting part was the part that the ship the Californian played, which Ross writes about in detail.

I also liked the descriptions of the cabins, dining-rooms and facilities of each class. First Class, of course, sounds sumptuous, but the passengers in Third Class enjoyed generous facilities compared with other ships. They had three meals a day in their dining-room with a choice of dishes, and a means for complaining if service was poor. There was also a men's smoking room, and a 'general room', similar to a waiting room in a train station.

This was an interesting and easy read with ample illustrations, photographs and paintings.

I received this free ebook from NetGalley in return for an honest review.

‘On Wednesday 10 April, a few minutes after midday, with the ship's band playing on deck, the Titanic cast off from Southamptons White Star quay, and, with six tugboats attached, began to move outwards.’

As soon as I was approved for this I sat down and devoured it within hours! What’s really upsetting is that I had to read this on the NetGalley shelf on my phone! This is a book that should not be read this way, and I hope I can get my hands on a physical copy asap!?

But my gosh this was fantastic. As a huge titanic fan, this just hit every spot! I’ve read many books on the subject and I’m always blown away when I find out new things and discover new photos and with the latter, I seen a lot of new ones.

This is a MUST read for any titanic fan, historical reader and for people interested in ships.

I’m so grateful I got to read this :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

‘A slight bumping sensation passed through the vessel. Again, reaction was prompt. With the engines now at full reverse, Murdoch ordered
'Hard to port to swing the stern away from the berg, then ran to the lever that would close the watertight doors on the Orlop deck. The time was noted as 11.40 p.m.’

With thanks to the author, publishers Amber Books Ltd., and NetGalley for providing me with a digital ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

If you are looking for a really detailed account of the Titanic from its conception through to its unfortunate demise then this is not the book for you, and there are many others out there that provide that level of detail.

However, the book would serve as a fine introduction for someone not already familiar with the Titanic. It tells the story of the great ship from its “unsinkable” design, its construction, its maiden voyage, then on the disaster itself and the aftermath, and strikes a good balance by telling that story both in text format and visually through its impressive collection of images. I have read quite a few books about Titanic, and still found a few facts and in particular photographs that I hadn’t come across before.

While the story of the Titanic is not new, the images and content in this collection were new to me. The pictures contain moments of everyday life for those on board as well as stunning details I have not seen before. I am more drawn to the human experience that the inner workings of the construction and engineering, but all aspects are covered in an appealing manner. I was able to understand the explanations and enjoyed the descriptions. The background on so many other people who had a role or an experience of this great tragedy reminded me again of the significance of the loss. While the outcome is altogether heart breaking, the stories leading into the journey are priceless. I appreciate the breadth of content and depth of descriptions. A very well done compilation to pay homage to the Titanic.

I find the story of the Titanic both harrowing and equally fascinating. There are so many conspiracy theories flying around about it. But at the end of the day, this is a Heartbreaking story of corners cut and unfortunate circumstances which led to catastrophic loss of life. Years ago I visited the Titanic museum in Belfast - the facts there are incredible. This book mirrors that and the pictures are amazing to see. This really would have been the ship of dreams.

The book itself is well written. Fast paced. And full of facts. Definitely a must read for any titanic fan. Although you might not learn anything new.

Firstly I have to say that the photos that goes with the whole story of Titanic truly fascinating.

Prior to watching the blockbuster film Titanic I didn’t real know anything about the ship nor the story behind it. This book is concise and tells us the story of Titanic from beginning to the very end and beyond. I found it an interesting read that was easy to follow. The way the author has put this book together with the various chapters I found excellent too.

For me with the pictures it was good to be able to put faces to the names of all that were involved with the design , build & who worked on Titanic.

Although this book taught me a great deal about the Titanic, it did not leave a lasting impression on me. One aspect I admired about the book was the extensive collection of pictures, which vividly illustrated the timeline of the Titanic and added depth to the narrative. However, I found it frustrating that the photo descriptions were not on the same page as the photos themselves. It was inconvenient to read the description, turn the page, and then struggle to remember what the description said. This detracted from the overall reading experience for me. Despite these issues, the book offers valuable insights and a comprehensive visual journey for those interested in the Titanic's history.

When I requested this book, I did not realize that it was not available on Kindle.

My computer cannot read .pdf files and the print on the Kindle Shelf App is way too small for my old eyes to read.

I am very sad that I cannot access this book. I am a long time Titanic aficionado and wanted badly to add this book to my list of favorites.

Should the book become available on Kindle, or in print, I will obtain it then.

I want to thank NetGalley and Amber Books Ltd./Amber Books for attempting to forward to me a copy of this book for me to read and enjoy.

Most people know the story of the Titanic. Of what happened on that fateful day, 14 April 1912. However, few are probably aware of what happened in the aftermath of the sinking of the Titanic.

The photos in this book were beautiful and quite a few are ones I hadn't seen before. I loved the detail in the book. I also really liked the last chapter about the aftermath because I wasn't really aware of any of it.

An excellently written book! Anyone fascinated with the history of the Titanic will devour this book. It's not only packed with loads of information, but with pictures that add the visual aspect to the text. Actually seeing not just the ship, but the passengers and crew as well provides an added layer to the realness of this horrible event. Definitely a worthwhile read.
