Christoffer Rodolphe van Hoogenhouck-Tulleken, known as Dr. Chris, is a British physician, associate professor at University College London, practicing infectious diseases doctor with a PhD in molecular virology, television presenter, BAFTA-winning broadcaster and identical twin brother of Alexander "Xand" van Hoogenhouck-Tulleken.
Van Tulleken became well known for his two-part television special for BBC One entitled The Doctor Who Gave Up Drugs (2018). He is the author of Ultra-Processed People (2023). The van Tulleken brothers have jointly presented several television programmes, including the children's series Operation Ouch! (2013).
Funny, witty and full of interesting information and jokes that will appeal to kids. It covers different body parts and organs. And ending the book with the appendix was just brilliant! I really had fun reading it.
Sometimes I read children’s books out of curiosity, especially the ones that explain complex processes in simple language. This week I read two Operation Ouch books: Your Brilliant Body and Medical Milestones and Crazy Cures.
Operation Ouch: Your Brilliant Body explains how the body works in a clear, funny, and easy-to-read way. I loved the cartoons and the bite-sized sections like “Did You Know?”, “Gross Out,” and “Body Tricks.” The “Body Tricks” pages were my favourite because they include a “try it out with a friend” element, which makes the science feel really hands-on.
The second book, Operation Ouch: Medical Milestones and Crazy Cures, focuses on how patients were treated in the past. It also highlights some pioneers of medicine and how their work changed patient care. It follows a similar format to the first book and was interesting throughout, but my preferred read was Your Brilliant Body.
I loved this book. It takes you from your head to your toes and features every body part. From the eyes to the appendix I loved this book! In this book you will find out how long you spend on a toilet in your whole lifetime, how many calculations a brain can make in one second and so much more! There are even magic tricks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
I thought the book was very interesting and had a lot of cool facts about your body like did you know your eyes can process thirty six thousand pieces of information in an hour? Also did you know about 50 percent of people have tiny eyelash mites on their eyelashes? By Phoebe
