This read presents a heartfelt and authentic narrative that explores the complexities of broken relationships, providing a guide toward reconciliation, both with others and with ourselves.
From the beginning, Cunningham invites us to share his vulnerability. Her deep wisdom, enriched with personal experiences, makes us feel understood in our suffering. There is no room for judgment or blame, only a genuine understanding of the pain associated with separation.
The author introduces an innovative concept: the three kingdoms of the self, culture and the uncanny. This framework helps us understand how these elements influence our relationships, especially the complex dynamics between mothers and daughters. Cunningham explores in detail how these realms interact and shape family experiences, offering unique insight into the causes of estrangement.
"Estrangement: Healing for Mothers & Daughters" is essential for those who have experienced a separation, whether as a mother, daughter, or anyone seeking to heal their relationships.

It seems sometimes like there is a veritable epidemic of mothers and their daughters becoming estranged. This might simply be because they are from different generations and don’t know how to communicate effectively. In any event, it’s genuinely shocking how many mothers no longer speak to their daughters, and most people agree it’s unfortunate and sad.

This book has many tips for how mothers and their daughters can put their hurt feelings aside and start to communicate better. The author is clearly knowledgeable about the subject, and she is able to discuss with a good deal of warmth and feeling how supposedly insurmountable differences can be moved past.

Any mother or daughter who has given up on the relationship but who still has regrets would do well to read this book. We all have only so much time in this world, and mending fences with a parent or a child should always be a top priority.

valuable lessons

This book explores the complicated and often painful dynamics of family relationships. Here the author particularly focuses on expectations and their impact on emotions and interactions. I liked the fact that the book contains personal anecdotes, philosophical insights, and practical advice to guide. This really made me feel well guided through understanding and managing my expectations in a healthier, clearer, and kinder manner. I can say that overall, this book offers valuable lessons on cultivating healthy expectations and improving relationships. It provided me with crucial tools. Having relationships of any kind is hard, and it has to be learned. Nobody is born knowing how to communicate and interact in an effective and empathetic way. But that’s what this book is for. I read it because I was having a hard time with my mother. But after reading this, I understood a lot of our problems better.

We know that the relationship between mothers and daughters can sometimes be complicated. There is a lot of emotional baggage, shared experiences, and often, we don't know where to start. But even if the relationship is not bad, there is always room to strengthen it and heal any wounds. In this book, author Jodi LaRae Cunningham with great sensitivity explores the relationship between mothers and daughters and how this relationship can be healed.
Personally, I think this book has it all: advice, stories and a great theme to explore.
I also believe that the author addresses the topic with the depth and seriousness it deserves. At all times, readers feel the author's empathy. Without a doubt, it's a book to recommend, to heal and to forgive.

This read by Jodi LaRae Cunningham is a book where Cunningham shares her own stories, making an authentic connection with you as a reader.
His ability to integrate faith, philosophy, and current norms into his analysis of alienation offered me a deeper understanding of the underlying causes. I found his description of alienation as a separation necessary for healing, rather than a mere rupture, very valuable. This perspective helped me reframe my own feelings and accept that reconciliation is not always possible.
It's a valuable guide that I recommend for anyone who is in search of understanding and personal growth in the midst of difficult relationships.

Estrangement is a book that primarily works on the mother-daughter bond, but I think it is much more than that. It's a read that connects you with your feelings on a deeper level, taking ordinary problems and analyzing them to find possible solutions.

I bought it as a gift to a friend going through a rough patch and decided to try it for myself. Jodi LaRae Cunningham writes this book with knowledge and determination to help mothers and daughters build a bridge and reconnect. Even so, anyone who reads it can make their conclusions and extract valuable lessons from it.

Overall, it is an insightful read from a talented author.

This is no ordinary book, it can take the reader on an emotional ride, or dare I say, it totally will. This book is not meant for everyone but it can be a great help if you are dealing with a not-so-great situation with your mother or daughter. How to deal with the loss of someone you love is very personal, especially if that someone is still alive, it can be twice as painful, but this book contains great advice that might help the reader navigate those dark waters.

Empathy is a great tool for these situations and this narrative is based on kindness. It opens up conversations and it is the key to better things! Wonderful.

Level headed advice

This isn't a typical self help book, not the kind I usually see. It's not overly hyper, excessively encouraging, or just "too much," which to me can sometimes feel phony or placating. This is more of a heady book, sensible and smart, with a calm, intelligent tone. I loved all the philosophy lessons and comparisons as well. There are also several religious references, but it's not too much. Some readers may prefer a book that's written in a more enthusiastic or upbeat tone, but I really liked how this book was written. Good mother/ daughter lessons but really the concepts here would be useful for and would benefit anybody. I'd recommend this book.

I recommended this book to my grandma and aunts, as I know that even though they have a good relationship, there are still times that they clash, which helps make that a better relationship. This book explains how love and understanding can easily bridge that gap. Reading this book, I realized it applies to mothers and daughters and to every relationship known to man. The six layers of apology are lovely and a good insight into resolving a conflict with a loved one. The journaling prompts at the end of every chapter are a good reflection moment for me. I am still working on some journal prompts, but I find these activities in the book soothing and calming to my soul, which I think the women in my family can benefit from.

I liked the way the author broke down estrangement. She connects faith, philosophy, and today's morals to help you understand the cause of the estrangement and to help heal oneself through it. You may or may not be able to heal and strength the relationship, but the least you can do is help yourself through it. I like the journal entries at the end to help you self reflect. It's always good to take a moment and breathe and write. This book is really for anyone who wants to learn more or move forward in this.
