This is a nice short book introducing us to the Unusual's world (supernatural folks) through the perspective of an insider (Rose) and an outsider (Chip) in the midst of a family crisis. I think more can be done to develop Chip's character, though he's very likeable even at times when you think he shouldn't be (his initial profession and the type of women he dates gives the impression of one type of character, but his thoughts and actions around family give a different impression of his character). Looking forward to reading the rest of the series...
Chip and Rose are an unlikely Aunt and Uncle duo to reckon with!
After a family tragedy, maternal Aunt Rose and paternal Uncle Chip find themselves responsible for their young niece and nephew. Chip finds out the whole world has a whole lot more to it, and has become Guardian for the children, while Rose, a trained Warrior who has known about the Unusual World all her life is less than keen to not have full charge of the children and for a noob to the paranormal world to be looking after them.
Rose hunts for the bad guys and Chip manages quite well to look after the children…until shenanigans ensue which take both of their forces combined to face.
The two of them work their own ways, however when the children’s lives are at risk, they work effectively as a team.
Very good first story in a new series, and an easy and enjoyable read.
I was quite entertained by this ARC of the book and am looking forward to the next one in the series.
This very clearly needed the input of a good editor. The premise was fun and I liked Chip, but there was repetition and some things that didn’t quite make sense. Rose was not a nice person.
This was a fun quick read! Chip and Rose have issues but it was a relief they grew and changed by end of book. Mystery not solved but at least things evolved to help the kids better. I bought book 2 and can’t wait for it to arrive soon! It’s cool that Chip is developing powers.
It was a highly interesting concept, and I found the first couple of chapters entertaining. However, I hate to admit that I found the book frustrating. I loved reading Chip's chapters as he made mistakes but learned and corrected growing each time. I could not stand Rose! Every time her chapter came up, I was tearing my hair out and wanted to give up on the book. She had a great premise, but the author pushed her so far into the I must become the guardian as I am the only one who can no matter what that she was painful to read. It was such an overbearing, sabotaging, and self-centered look at grief and responsibility that the fantasy and enjoyment I try to get from reading was gone. Sadly, I am not sure if I want to continue with the series as I don't think I can take more of Rose.
I read my first Jamie Davis book, Extreme Medical Services, just 2 weeks ago. I was scrolling through my Kindle reader looking for something engaging and escapist to read on a long transatlantic flight. I was in the D section of the reader looking for some Jana Deleon books I’d been saving when I noticed the above mentioned book, which I must have downloaded and forgotten about, and I blasted right through it and immediately grabbed the next one in the series. These are quick but fun reads that keep me interested—so interested that I finished the EMT series, 2 spinoffs, and started the next series, Uncle Chip Saves the Fae. All in 2 weeks. One thing I really appreciate is that Jamie links right to the next book’s Kindle bookstore link on the last page of the one you’re finishing, so all you have to do is click to snag the next book in the series. This is huge for me as a series fiction fan, and he’s the only Kindle author I’ve seen do this. It’s stupidly hard to find the kindle store on Amazon at times, and sometimes I give up. Not with these! Smart marketing, too, on the author’s part. The first series was on Kindle unlimited so it was free for me to read with my membership, but I’ve gladly paid $3, $5, and $7 for the next 3 books and will continue to do so. Thanks for the great storytelling, Jamie!
This was an very promising beginning, i loved the universe and the characters are interesting. I guess i was a bit angry with Rose at teh beginning as she did not seems to grasp what her sister wanted i mean if she was the guardian it means only one line of defense...if Chip is guardian he is one line of defense and she is the second so double security.....though i understand her grieving. Then man what Chip could be stupid as well...no photo, no babysitter and he broke all those simple rules so what he will be when there will be more or stricter ones it remaisn to be seen
That being said i'm sure together they can do wonder and i can't wait to see that because so far each series i've readby this author get better with each instalment so i can't wait for next one and see what happen to all of this group ( a bed troll ^^ i hope we will see more of him)
Great promising urban fantasy with lot of different fae
The book rolls back and forth between heavy conflict and chances to step back and breathe. Some of that conflict is between Chip and Rose as the totally human Chip learns what it is to be a Fae Guardian as he steps into a completely new world for him.
"He’s trying. He really is.” Rose agrees; she thinks he is very trying.
Will Chip learn and grow into his powers as Guardian?
Will Rose think of him as less trying?
Will the two of them be enough to fend off the attacks that come while he is still new to his role?
I love this author’s writing, so I was excited when I found out he started writing a new one for his Kickstarter and had to purchase it. I started reading this, and I was immediately engrossed in the story. I love how Chip went from a laid-back business mogul to a guardian of his niece, the future queen. I loved how Chip and Rose must work together even if they don’t want to, and I love how this all comes together. I just adore this well-written series-starter, and I hope there are many more to come! Highly recommend.
I think the world is a fun world and the premise is pretty solid. But the second hand anger I felt was too high to rate this book well. Chip was a normal person until being asked to take care of the kids!!! How can he be expected to treat things the way rose does? Further how can he act appropriately when rose is actively trying to undermine him?!?! The indignant responses whenever chip acted like a normal person (minus the rich person tinge of having a nanny) infuriated me.
This charming story doesn't trop bend so much as turn them sideways--and maybe upside down. The million-billionaire starts out an alpha-hole, but quickly develops into a half-way decent guardian for his niece. While coming to terms with 'the fae among us.' There is mystery, intrigue, and magic battles. There is also the kernel of a slow-burn opposites attract romance. But it's complicated by an (hinted at) ill-conceived hookup in the past.
I loved this book and had a hard time putting it down. I wanted to smack Chip & Rose multiple times and when a book can pull such emotion from me, its a good one! Plenty of action, suspense, twists and magic can be found in this story that sucked me in from page 1. I can't wait to see what Jamie Davis has in store for us in the next book
Really not my cup of tea. Didn’t like the parenting aspect (personal taste), I also thought the povs of the two main characters were too similliar, thus causing me to get mixed up quite a bit between whose head we’re in. I also really didn’t click with a single character, which certainly didn’t help.
I really enjoyed this start of a new series. A Wall Street high end stock broker turns into Mr. Mom/ the Pacifier to a couple of magical children. His eyes were opened to a magical world that he never dreamed existed. On top of that, his sister in law's sister can't wait for him to fail.
This is a really fun book. Other than Chip never using a sword like on the cover, everything made sense for the universe. Lots of action, magic, and some adventure mixed in. The characters really worked well together and the story made sense as it progressed. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it. I look forward to reading future books in the series.
I will definitely be reading the rest of this series and based on the excellent writing I'll be dipping into some of the other series he has written. I'm particularly interested in the one co written with Michael Anderly another author I have enjoyed.
The opening scene that introduces Rose, hooked me in this book. Then I got to meet Chip, and his interaction with his niece and nephew made me like him instantly. There are some really good fight scenes in here, and I am looking forward to seeing Sadie grow up.
Of course any uplifting story has to end with the good guys coming out on top, even if barely so. This really enticing and we'll written tall kept me eager for the next word from beginning to (too early) end.
This was a fast pace and magical/mystery debut. Poor 4 year old Sadi has a challenge ahead of her being the next Fae Queen. Now it’s up to her Uncle Chip and Aunt Rose to protect her and her baby brother, if only they could get along!!
I was actually a beta listener for this book! Jamie Davis never disappoints. This story just gets better with each book! (Trust me, I know this to be a fact!)

Good story started a little slow but picked up nicely. Got this as part of a kickstarter campaign. He writes well rounded characters and just enough action
