Monsters, PI #1

Secret Agent Gargoyle

Rate this book
Do I dare trust my heart to Secret Agent Gargoyle?

When my specialty beer kegs turn up missing days before a big brew-off event, I hire Monsters, PI to track down my beer. Who’s assigned to my case? Tuvid Elresh, the gargoyle who wrongfully accused me of gnome-theft a few short weeks ago.

Tuvid’s seven feet of bulging gargoyle muscles with a killer—fang-filled—smile. So, when our not-one-night-stand inside a beer cooler results in a spontaneous marriage proposal—solely to save his gargoyle rep—I know I’m in deep trouble. My business plans don’t include marrying a gargoyle, but Tuvid’s impossible to resist. Will I lose my heart to a gargoyle secret agent?

Tuvid: I met Angie while I was wrapping up a local investigation involving stolen gnomes. Yeah, I was given the wrong address, and I accused her of stealing the little guys. I was determined to make amends. Plus ask her out, because she was cute. But she didn’t return my calls.

Then we’re locked inside her microbrewery’s cold storage, and who should unlock the door in the morning? Her mom and mine. It’s clear we’ve been together all night, though we didn’t do anything—well, not much. But gargoyles are old-fashioned, and my reputation will be shattered unless we get married.

I’m not a gargoyle who’ll waste an opportunity like this. I’m going to track down her beer kegs in time for the brew-off. And when the case is closed? Angie’s going to be my gargoyle bride.

Secret Agent Gargoyle is Book 1 in the Monsters, PI Series. It’s a cute and steamy romance featuring a cinnamon roll gargoyle with creative body parts, on-the-page heat, size difference, a cozy mystery, lots of laughs, and a HEA guaranteed.

Cold Storage, Hot Chemistry

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙💚💜❤️
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Chemistry: 🧪🧪🧪🧪🧪
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: ☺️🤣🙁😘
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

🦸🏼‍♀️ Heroine Spotlight: Angie
In a world where monsters have stepped out of the shadows and into everyday life, Angie is just trying to keep her microbrewery afloat. When her prized stout kegs vanish days before the Monster Mash brew-off—a competition that could launch her brand into viral stardom—she turns to Monsters, P.I., a detective agency run by an orc with a nose for trouble. Angie’s mission? Recover the stolen brew and claim her rightful place on the Monster Beer Blog.

---

🦸🏻‍♂️ Hero Spotlight: Tuvid
Tuvid is a seven-foot-tall gargoyle with a granite jawline and a heart that’s already spoken for. As the newest agent at Monsters, P.I., he’s still learning the ropes—and it shows when he mistakenly accuses Angie of gnome theft thanks to a botched address. But fate (and a glowing mating mark) has other plans. From the moment he touches her, Tuvid knows Angie is his destined mate. Now he just has to convince her she’s not only innocent—but his.

---

🔥 Plot Snapshot
Tuvid takes on Angie’s case, eager to prove his detective chops and win her heart. After a rocky start, Angie warms to his apology and gives him a tour of her brewery, sharing the legacy her late uncle left behind. Their chemistry simmers as they chase clues and dodge flirtation—until a night locked in cold storage turns steamy. Found the next morning by both their mothers (because of course), they’re nudged into an engagement that feels more comedic than cosmic, especially since they’re fated mates already.

---

❤️‍🔥 What Worked

• Ava Ross delivers another fun, monster-meets-mate romp with a quirky premise and plenty of heat.
• Tuvid and Angie are all-in from the start—lusty, curious, and emotionally open, which keeps the pace brisk and the tension delicious.
• The mystery adds just enough intrigue to balance the romance, making this more than just a steamy interspecies meet-cute.

---

🤨 Room for More

• The forced engagement after one night in a freezer? A bit much. Especially when fate already stamped its approval. It felt more like a sitcom setup than a serious emotional beat.

---

🎧 Narration Vibes
Dual POVs, dual narrators: Stephen Borne and Elle Sonali
Elle Sonali’s performance is smooth and expressive—her voice feels lived-in, not read. Stephen Borne nails Tuvid’s gravelly charm, but his female voices miss the mark, pulling listeners out of the moment. A duet narration would’ve elevated the intimacy and pacing. Both narrators lean into the camp a little too hard at times, giving the story a cartoonish edge that doesn’t always match the emotional stakes.

---

📝 Final Thoughts
Ava Ross blends monster lore, romantic tension, and brewery drama into a fast-paced, flirty adventure. While some plot turns lean silly, the chemistry and charm carry the story. If you’re in the mood for gargoyle swoon, beer-fueled banter, and a heroine who knows her hops, this one’s worth a listen.

Looking for a cute and cozy mystery with some monster smut?
Neither was I, but I'm glad it found me!
This was a lot of fun to read.
Giggles, decent mystery, monsters, beer and spicy bits.
The only thing that kinda bugged me was how much the FMC cried.
Other than that, all good!
Much love to Ava Ross for my ARC!

I also found the preparation for the big day as they’re trying to solve who took her kegs funny. 😂 If you want a sweet monster romance then this is for you! I thought it was a cute romance mystery and a fast short read!!

Very thankful for getting the chance to read this ARC!

This is my second Ava Ross book and it was very entertaining. I love these types of books and it was not too long of a read.
This had fated mates, and mystery so if you enjoy the two you have to check out this book!
Also fake dating! I loved that they had a connection from the start and Angie is a bit different from other FMCs I have read. She, of course, has traits that I love in all my FMCs that I love but she had special quirks, I will say, that made her even more interesting.

I just I general love when the MMC is obsessed with out FMC so if you’re looking for that this book is for you!

This is all my honest thoughts!

A tiny misunderstanding during their first encounter has Angie not exactly thrilled to have Tuvid assigned to her case when she comes to the PI agency for help. After all, being accused of theft by the hunky gargoyle isn't the greatest way to make a good first impression. But she deals and finds out the big gargoyle is sweeter (and sexier) than she thought.

On Tuvid's end, he jumped to some conclusions and made a mistake and he absolutely realized it pretty much as soon as he accused Angie. But the damage was done and it was only luck and happenstance that led to her asking for help when he was the only agent available. So he took that as a sign and set out to charm Angie out of her upset. Which he did. And then they got trapped in a walk-in overnight and suddenly they're fake engaged.

Which might not have been Tuvid's plan at the start of things, but he's willing to work with what he's given. He's also planning on convincing Angie they'd make a great couple before their fake engagement ends.

A brewery plagued with problems, an important upcoming contest, meddling family (on both sides), fake tails, steamy looks, a gargoyle who made a critical error, and a lady who might not have been thrilled with their first meeting, but who knows a good thing when she cuddles up to him. *thumbs up*

This story was super adorable and cozy.

Angie (human) and Tuvid (gargoyle) have kind of an anti-meet cute, but end up working together when Angie hires his PI firm to find her stolen beer kegs. They get locked up together in her beer cooler…and *use your imagination.*

Honestly, Secret Agent Gargoyle had so much going for it. Cute fake dating trope, a gargoyle that falls first, overbearing mothers planning their wedding—cultures coming together, enough suspense to keep the plot moving, and lastly, a beer I want to drink for real.

Overall, this story made my heart happy and I will be watching for more in this series.

🖤 “I’m here for you, Angie, in any way you need me.”
~~~
Angie is the owner of a microbrewery - Beastly Beer Co. She’s kind, feisty, sassy and so fun. Even more, she’s very hardworking, creative and a really wonderful boss. And she’s not a woman who backs down from challenges and is always ready to face and deal with any hardships thrown her way. Angie is a wonderful woman and I loved her so, so much!
Agent Tuvid Elresh is the newest hire in Monsters, PI. He’s big, strong, smart, resourceful and fiercely protective. And he’s really good at his job. Even more, this gorgeous gargoyle is incredibly thoughtful, kind, patient, understanding, supportive and so irresistibly charming. Tuvid is such a cinnamon roll of a male and I couldn’t help but adore everything about him!
I loved everything that happened between Angie and Tuvid! They definitely didn’t start on the right foot, but now Angie needs the help of Monsters, PI to track down her stolen beer. And, as it happens, Tuvid is the only agent available to take her case. I adored those two together! Their chemistry was fantastic right from the start and their banters were an absolute delight to read. Even more, when they get locked inside the microbrewery’s cold storage for the night, things get even more fun. Now, in addition to the investigation and because of gargoyle traditions, Angie and Tuvid must prepare for a mating ceremony and also deal with their loving, but very meddling, mothers. Nevertheless, Angie and Tuvid did absolutely wonderfully. What started as a reluctant partnership and a fake engagement, quickly became something so much more. And when they couldn’t resist the undeniable need for one another, the passionate moments they shared were so hot! Tuvid and Angie were so perfect for each other and I couldn’t get enough of either of them!
Overall, Secret Agent Gargoyle is a fun, quick, cozy and naughty story with a dash of suspense, surprises and mystery.
I loved it!
Audiobook 6hrs 23mins
Narrator's: Stephen Borne and Elle Sonali
Ahh I'm back in my cozy monster romance phase and I have to say I've come to love this author as her monsters have just the right blend of cinnamon roll and protectiveness about them. So I was really excited to find this cute little series to sink my teeth into, although only the first book is available on audio for now, I'll definitely be checking out the rest in ebook. Of course I was delighted to see the start of these books kicks off with a gargoyle (anyone who knows me, knows just how much I love them) and I was equally enchanted with the narrators Stephen Borne and Elle Sonali who brought Angie and Tuvid to life. Yes this cute, cozy romance has it all, humour, mystery and spice wrapped up with a perfect HEA.
When Angie turns to Monster PI to investigate the theft of her specialty craft beer right before a brew off event she was hoping to enter, the last thing she expected was to be assigned the gargoyle who accused her of stealing gnomes a few weeks prior. Complicating matters is after being locked in overnight at her brewery, they find themselves engaged as per gargoyle custom, to save Tuvid's reputation amongst his people. Now not only do they need to work together to find out who is out to destroy Angie's dream of making more out of her brewery, they have to navigate over-excited mothers trying to plan the perfect human/gargoyle wedding, and it might just be easier to find the beer.
I absolutely adored both Angie and Tuvid who after a rocky start really are a sweet couple with me rooting for them all the way. And their overbearing mothers really are something to behold with their formidable wedding planning. Yes I loved everything about this and I can't wait to get to book 2 which features a different couple and a new mystery. Totally recommend 😁
Stars: 4/5 Stars Spice: 3/4 Peppers - smut
This is such a cute short read! It is only about 230 pages give or take, so it is super quick and does have some crine moments, but nothing bad! I truly loved the story, especially the ending. Ava Ross does such an amazing job giving enough world-building so it's not dumping on you, but also lets you enjoy the story, and does not skimp on the Gargoyle Smut *winky face* haha.
"This guy had a magical tongue and fingers, and I'd always been a girl who enjoyed tricks involving magic." - Angie
Angie (FMC) is unique, and I found her always crying no matter the reason a bit entertaining at moments. Tuvid is great and def has some goofy moments! The way he just constantly supports Angie regardless is amazing. And, whatever it is does not matter, he gives his full support 100%. These two are support cute, and I truly loved we got a glimpse of the Gnome Scene (iykyk lol)
"You taste sweet. Like Sunshine and a world of promises." - Tuvid
Highly recommend this cozy monster romance to all!
*Curvy, Cinnamon Roll FMC
It's interesting to me some reviews liked the 'banter' of the MILs. Or sad, maybe it's sad. Because they were flat out abusive and gross. Manipulative and insulting and dismissive, using drama to force their adult kids to do things they didn't want to do out of guilt or obligation. And it's never mentioned as the gross behavior it is. Like, these parents should be confronted, given boundaries and expectations and had them followed or been estranged from their kids.
Uploading them without permission to dating sites? Setting them up on dates they aren't comfortable with? Forcing a marriage through guilt? Planning the entire wedding for their children without consultating? Purposely getting their sons fiance's name wrong? The fact they never once stand up for themselves is gross.
Also he states he can't get arrested for defending his mate in one instance, then offers to apologize to her hurtful x-boyfriend when he shoves him with his wing to avoid an assault charge. Which is it?
And just ending pre-mating bite?
The childish smexy time banter?
Ugh.
The idea is good, character ideas good, premise good, but the book just didn't have what I was looking for.
Secret Agent Gargoyle is the first book in the new Monsters, PI Series by Ava Ross.
Let me begin by saying I have read several books by this author and found them to be hit or miss for me. This one falls somewhere in between. Please allow me to explain.
While I loved the overall concept of the story, I found the plot lacking. I liked Tuvid, our Gargoyle MMC, and some of the characters. I also found the meddling mothers-in-law hilarious. Unfortunately, Angie, our FMC, was more annoying than endearing.  Her constant sobbing was silly, not cute, and her stupid chatter during spicy scenes made me skip through them entirely. I truly think the story would have made an awesome novella! I say this about many of her books. They would be so much better if they were shorter! I do think this author has so much potential, and her story ideas are fantastic. This is why I keep reading her books. Hopefully, the next will be better.
Angie and Tuvid met when he accused her incorrectly of stealing garden gnomes. So when she goes to Monster PI to get help with some stolen microbrews, she’s not happy that he is the only investigator available.
When they are trapped in her beer cooler overnight, although nothing really happened, Angie is surprised that to save Tuvid’s gargoyle reputation, they are now engaged.
This is a fun book with romance (some hot and heavy), mystery, great characters and a lot of humour
Told from both points of view, the growing mutual attraction (love-fated mate) and the search for the beer theft this is a definitely enjoyable read.
The two mothers are almost overbearing with wedding plans, both meaning well but trying to push both of their points of view, always amicably.
The characters range from great friends to slimy ex’s.
I figured I’d enjoy this but not as much as I did.
🔎 Cinnamon Roll FMC
🔎 Cozy Mystery
🔎 Fated Mates - only he knows
🔎 Close Proximity
🔎 Fake Engagement
"Secret Agent Gargoyle " was a quick and cozy monster read. Its lighthearted and humorous. The protagonist, Angie, encounters a challenging situation when her keg goes missing right before a crucial microbrew competition. Despite the police's lack of progress in resolving the case, Angie takes matters into her own hands by hiring a private investigator named Tuvid, who happens to be a gargoyle. Their collaboration becomes necessary as they work together to uncover the truth behind the missing keg.
It was definitely over the top and I am here for it. Apparently Gargoyles have quite the vivacious sexual appetite.
This book was fun and super cute. When Angie's beer gets stolen, its up to Tuvid to use his skills to find the stolen beer before the contest that is quickly approaching. Meanwhile, shenanigans ensue when they get locked in a cooler and later have to pretend to be getting married, but for Tuvid, our resident PI gargoyle, Angie is his mate.
Something I really enjoyed with this was the communication and banter between Angie and Tuvid. It was lighthearted, playful, serious but always mindful. I loved the mutual respect for traditions and the willingness both sides had to contribute to their story being believable, even to their mothers.
This was a fairly quick and fun read that will leave a happy feeling at the end. I can't wait for more stories from this town.
It started of good, but lost steam as it went.
My main issue was the story seemed rushed and incoherent. None of the events was given time or page numbers to let the reader feel it.
Example:
And on top of that there are some dynamics between the in law mothers and the FMC/MMC that doesn't make sense. You might put the gargoyles down to a species thing, but not the humans.
A shame, because I enjoyed the premise and the actual story line, it just wasn't good...
It was definitely a random pick and a lot of that had to do with the cover being so cute. Anyway, the book wasn’t bad, and it was cute. I just wish we focused on the mystery a little bit more. It kind of felt like the book wasn’t sure which trope it wanted to focus on. We go into it thinking it was going to be a forced proximity/enemies to lovers but then that quickly changes to fated mates and fake dating but again it doesn’t last very long because they are actually falling for one another and end up falling in love. It also kind of pushes the mystery into the background. It’s just a bit of a hot mess. But the mystery side of things was so interesting which is why I wish it had a bigger focus. It was just a bit of a mess.
Love and a mystery
I loved this monster-human, size difference, fake engagement, light mystery romance. This heartwarming story was a fun and spicy read with the just right amount of feelings. Reading it made me so happy and I smiled the entire time I read this book. Tuvid is a gargoyle who works for Monsters, PI. Angie is a human woman that owns a micro brewery, Beastly Beer Co. When three kegs of beer that Angie plans to enter into a contest are stolen, she hires Tuvid to help her find them. Tuvid knows as soon as he touches Angie that she’s his fated mate and after being locked together overnight in a cooler, a fake engagement seems like the perfect way to comply with gargoyle culture while convincing Angie that she’s his mate. To get their HEA they’ll need to unravel the mystery, “pretend” to plan a wedding, and be willing to take leaps of faith. This well written story included engaging dialogue, three dimensional characters, and a captivating storyline. I am excited to read more in this series.
I LOVE THESE COZY MYSTERY/MONSTER ROMANCES by Ava Ross! Tuvid and Angie have a rocky beginning when he accused her of being a gnome thief (spoiler..she isn't) but someone has stolen her specialty beer that she is going to enter into the Monster Mash Brew-off. She goes to Monsters, PI to hire them to find the culprit. Tuvid is the only Agent available. He is such a sweet male. Angie is such a sweetie too. I loved them coming together. I loved the twists and who the Villian turns out to be. Ava Ross does monster's so well. I started reading and couldn't put it down. 5+ stars and so good! Get the book! The characters are awesome! The story is ridiculously good! I want to live in Mystic Harbor.
Secret Agent Gargoyle by Ava Ross is a wonderful rom com slash mystery! Angie is preparing for a microbrewery competition when her entry is stolen. This could ruin her business, so she hires an investigator who turns out to be the gargoyle who had recently wrongly accused her of gnomenapping! She and Tuvid get locked in the cooler overnight, causing his reputation to be threatened unless they marry. They carry on a fake engagement, but their mothers carry on the wedding planning and lock them in to a wedding. Of course, the two, having to be tail-tied, according to gargoyle tradition, fall further in love as they solve who dunnit! Love this series!
Oh my gosh! This is the coziest monster romance!
I loved the lighter nature of the mystery, and how everything unfolded. There were 3 or 4 different people I though could have done it throughout the story!
The two main characters had amazing banter that started from the get go! I was cracking up through the book with the back and forth!
I think my favorite part of this book was all the little things Tuvid did for Angie, like carrying tissues since Angie is a crier. It was such a sweet little gesture that had me swooning!
Tuvid and Angie were a perfect match and I can't wait for more of the series!
Secret Agent Gargoyle by Ava Ross is a fun and lighthearted paranormal romance that blends spy antics with supernatural charm. The concept of a gargoyle as a secret agent is delightfully unique, and the story delivers plenty of humor and flirtation along the way. The chemistry between the main characters is entertaining, and the plot moves quickly enough to keep you turning the pages.
While it doesn’t dive too deeply into world-building or emotional layers, it’s a great pick if you’re in the mood for something quirky and imaginative. Overall, it’s a cute, escapist read with a creative twist that makes it stand out from your usual paranormal romance.
This book is a cute, hilarious monster rom com. It’s giving Gilmore Girls x Disney Halloween Town vibes and I loved every second of it!
Angie meets Tuvid, a blue Gargoyle, for the second time and sparks fly. Tuvid works for Monsters PI and helps investigate Angie’s stolen beer kegs. They get locked in a chilly beer cooler all night thus staring a series of extremely funny events. These two will have you rolling and laughing out loud.
Secret Agent Gargoyle by Ava Ross is book 1 in her new Monsters, PI series, which takes place after Undercover Orc (Sweet Monster Treats series). This is a cozy mystery combined with a monster fated mate rom com and so much fun! You get romance, spice, intrigue and laughter. The story is well told, the characters are lovely (you even see some familiar characters from some of Ava’s other Monster stories), and you get Ava’s amazing world building ability.
It was a cute story, but there were too many plots holes for it to receive more than 3 stars. Also, the conversation between the characters was very jilted and did not flow at all. The story, plot line, and characters had the potential to be a cute, cozy romance department but fell short. With a little more time spent on dialog, I think this could have been much better. Hopefully, the author will continue to improve.
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
