“Promise me you’ll take care… of Ebony.” A gurgly cough interrupted his words, but as soon as he’d gotten his breath back, he continued. “Protect her. I trust you.”
“I promise, Grant.” Wes nodded, squeezing his hand tightly. And it was an easy thing to promise, though only he knew why. The love he harbored for Ebony Sawyer was a deeply buried secret. One he had no intention of ever telling.
As death slaughters his employer, Wesley Acton makes a promise he can only fiercely hope to protecting Ebony Sawyer, his boss’s only daughter. But when their world crumbles around them and Ebony becomes orphaned, Wes is left with no other option but to run to the very same town he never desired to step foot in again.
Ebony’s life had always been delightfully sweet… until catastrophe strikes time and time again, leaving her destitute and alone for all but her treasured friend, Wes, who she’s secretly been in love with for years. When life takes an even worse turn, she readily and willingly runs away with him, not giving a second thought to the terrors that lie ahead.
With a rage-filled, evil step-father following their footsteps, the trek to Carson City for Wes and Ebony is nothing short of perilous and life-threatening, but will the journey of finally opening their hearts to one another turn out to be even more challenging?

An exciting, dramatic western romance!
This is the first book I've read by Millie Shepherd, and I hope it won't be the last.
Both Wes and Ebony were sympathetic, well-developed characters worth rooting for. I loved how they supported each other, and I thought they were really sweet together.
The plot moved along at a good speed and had plenty of western-style action that made it seem just like an old western movie. When We Run did contain a marriage-of-convenience plotline, but it was handled in a clean way (there were a couple of moments where it was implied things were going to happen, but the scene cut).
Overall, When We Run was a great read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy clean western romances.
If you know me at all, you know that I am a sucker for a marriage of convenience story, and this is one trope that I know Millie Shepherd will pull off perfectly. The romance is so sweet and so swoony, and I love it 😍
But the story is also gripping and action packed, and it kept me on my toes with each new obstacle thrown in the characters way.
Speaking of the characters, Wesley and Ebony are so well developed! Their conflicts and goals felt real, and I was rooting for them both throughout the story.
I don't hesitate to say that When We Run is Millie's best novel to date! Reading it, I could tell how much passion and love she poured into it, and it made me love the story even more 🧡
Note: I received an advanced reader copy from the author, and I was not required to leave a positive review. All views expressed are my own
There aren’t many books out there that leave me downright speechless, but When We Run did just that. Wes and Ebony are some of the sweetest, most well-rounded, and lovable characters I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading about. Toss them in a gripping, swoon-worthy plot, and this book has officially wormed its way into my top-five favorite books of all time. I can’t even begin to explain how much I love it!
If you’re looking for a fast-paced read with a sweet, deep romance weaved throughout, When We Run will undoubtedly be exactly what you’re looking for. 💕
I don't know what else to say about this book except that I absolutely adored this story. It was gripping from beginning to end and I was on edge of my seat screaming for the characters to tell each other how they really felt. Don't even get me started about their trauma. I cried through the very beginning and if you know, you know.
When We Run is a fast-paced, action-filled story that keeps you on your toes! I found myself engulfed throughout, and didn’t want to say goodbye to Ebony and Wes at the end. Their story was very enjoyable, and I loved Shepherd’s portrayal of marriage and romance. It was very clean but also swoony enough to enjoy. I highly recommend this western novel!
I think this is the first time I've picked up a western historical novel, and it didn't disappoint! When We Run by Millie Shepherd is a tale of love, forgiveness, and hope.
Story: 5/5
First things first, I have to say I was impressed by the author taking the care to put a content warning right at the beginning of the book. I'll share the warning at the end so it doesn't interrupt the review. From Chapter One, I loved Wes and Ebony. They are wonderfully real and flawed people that go on an amazing journey of growth and love. The plot unravels at breakneck speed but it never feels rushed or lagging--I finished the whole book in one day! It was so nice to see Wes' example as a strong man. He cries, he shares his feelings, but he's not soft or emotional.
Worldview is N/A because, even though the characters do mention the Lord, God is not really a factor in this story (if the characters talk about events, it's in reference to "life"). However, the themes here were stunning. Characters struggle with guilt and forgiving themselves, and with accepting unconditional love and sacrifice. Ebony and Wes are on the run, but they still have to face their pasts and glean what hope they can from the future.
In addition to the content warnings from the author, I would add that, while the fade to black scenes are very tame (fading within one sentence), there is one scene towards the end that is more moderate kissing across two pages or so.
All in all, a really pleasant read! I will definitely look out for Millie Shepherd's books!
Starts like a Disney movie, ripping your heart out. But ends with the “aww!” she promised in the Content Warning at the beginning of the book (which by the way is awesome! So glad she includes those reader expectations).
If you're in the mood for a western with strong, determined characters who love deeply; If you're in the mood for swoony closed-door romance with good life reminders; Then this is the book for you!
This standalone western romance had all the feels and you're going to love it!
Content: Standalone western romance (8yr age gap, secret love, who did this?) Intimacy - High (make outs, innuendo, fade to black) Language - Once (Thank God) Violence - Moderately-High (“pg13 violence”) Potential Triggers - deaths, attempted rape, fighting, abuse, life in danger
If you love gritty, western romance books then you will love this! Author Millie Shepherd does a beautiful job of crafting lovable characters you root for with a plot so engaging it will leave you hanging on every page!
I instantly fell in love with Wes and Ebony and was captivated by their story. Every character was so well done and made you either really love them or really hate them 😂 When I read this, I did NOT want to put it down and probably would’ve finished it in a day had it not been for ✨busyness✨
This was my first Western Romance and it did not disappoint! There is heartache and so much love throughout the story. I love the MCs. The author did a great job expressing feelings and emotions.
If you enjoy Western romances with wild plot twists and sizzling kisses, this book is for you! I enjoyed this one so much. The marriage of convenience trope captivated me and pulled me into the story. The love, care, and dedication reflected in the characters’ relationship warmed my heart and made me blush. Let me just say, chapter 26!!!
Millie Shepherd employs loveable characters who show true themes of loyalty and spirit. Both Wes and Ebony highlighted these traits. I also want to add that I love how Millie shines a light on blue-collar, working men and gives them a spotlight in her stories.
Millie drew me into the story with her gripping plot twists and as mentioned before, Wes and Ebony’s care of one another as situations pushed them to provide emotional and physical support for one another. Also, I loved Wes’ respect for Ebony, which reveals itself early on in When We Run. The short chapters and plot twists are a deadly combination for any reader, but with this story, I couldn’t put it down and finished it in three days, which is quick for me.
Thank you to @ltaylor for hosting your recent giveaway of Millie’s book and thank you, @milliesheperd for hosting our buddy read of When We Run.
This is my first historical western romance. I loved it so much. We follow Wes and Ebony as they journey through grief, trials and pain.
Wes was the sweetest in his love and care for Ebony. The way he loved her through grief made me fall in love with his character. He pushed aside his anger and heartbreak just for her.
Ebony was the perfect mix of sweet and sassy. She was dedicated to her man, no matter how broken he may have been. Ebony was gentle and kind. I loved how she talked herself through situations that seemed unbearable.
This story ended with the best happiness. I would love to read more about their lives after the big live change.
This book is an absolute gem. I thought I knew what was coming, but I was wrong! And that’s a good thing. This is a fast-paced book and the action will keep you on your toes!!
There are tough moments in the book, but a trigger warning is included at the beginning.
When WeRun also includes a romance that is so so sweet and a literal model of how a husband should treat his wife.
I am in awe at such wonderful storytelling. Millie has crafted a novel that will resonate with all its readers.
*I received this book as an ARC, and this is my honest review.
Appropriately rated PG-13, When We Run is an action packed, beautifully written story of love, growth, and overcoming hardship and fear. Millie Shepherd does a great job of providing a clean story that can be enjoyed by her readers without fear of anything explicit. I will say that there were a few kissing scenes outside of Millie’s initial warnings that might be a little more detailed than some would like. But, again, nothing explicit was ever described. All in all, this is my new favorite read of 2024!
I was thrilled to beta read on Wes and Ebonys story. These are my own opinions. I loved it. Quick start. Great chemistry. Satisfying conclusion. I love Millie’s stories. ❤️
Oh my goodness, where to start? I really enjoyed this book! I’d never read anything by Millie Shepherd before so I didn’t know what to expect, but When We Run was such a sweet & emotional read. There was friendship, love, tragedy, and danger all wrapped up in an adventurous story. If you’re looking for a book that will tug at your heartstrings and keep you guessing what will happen next, When We Run is a great choice!
Wes and Ebony have an unmatched bond and I adored seeing them rely on each other even before they would admit their feelings for one another. Through so much tragedy, hardship, and danger, Wes’s protective nature and his love for Ebony were so evident in his actions. I also loved the emotional growth the author developed in both main characters through their journey. Can’t wait to read more by Millie Shepherd!
Intimacy: Fade to Black in Marriage Sensitive Topics: Death of a loved one, attempted sexual assault (on page but not highly detailed or explicit), PG-13 level violence Available on Kindle Unlimited & Amazon
This was the first book I've read from this author and it won't be my last. A great book, really enjoyed it - the romance was sweet (& believable), the setting was well described, the pace was fast but not speeding, there was some suspense and some lighter moments. It really is a well balanced historical romantic suspense, that is clean & sweet. Although there are scenes on page of violence etc. they are only described enough for the purpose of the story, and still handled in a way that leaves this book in the clean category.
Definitely an author to watch, and a book to move up your TBR if you enjoy historical romantic suspense.
When we run is action packed definitely put me in my Dr Quin era. From the very beginning you are thrown into a whirlwind adventure filled with swoon, epic fights, bears mountains and death knocking on the door! You'll be holding your breath during this read. It was very good I enjoyed it.
If you're looking for your next Western read full of action, heartache, hope, faith, and the sweetest romance, then look no further! Millie Shepherd delivers all that and so much more in this brilliantly written novel. With high-stakes, edge-of-your-seat twists, and bits of humor, When We Run is anything but predictable. I highly recommend this story!
