After having read this first book, I’ve come to find out the author/illustrator have similar interests! Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy. No one wonder I’ve gravitated towards this story. It’s refreshing to read material that isn’t filled with gore and death all the time. Beyond the Clouds is a boy meets girl story filled with simple ideals that eventually go deeper when Mia becomes sick, sick for having saved Theo’s life. It’s an interesting read nonetheless, but like most manga, end in a cliffhanger that forces the reader to acquire the next book in the series. The panels are wonderfully drawn, somewhat in the Ghibli studio art style, and bring the characters to life. There are humans and cat people and lizard people which definitely seems standard in a fantasy manga, especially heavily influenced by Final Fantasy. I did enjoy this story and will certainly continue the journey to the find the medicine.

Beyond the Clouds is a stunningly-beautiful new manga which everyone needs to read. The artwork alone is breathtaking and the story is heartwarming and wholesome.

We follow an orphan named Theo who loves reading and losing himself in his wonderful imagination, who works at a mechanics shop. One day he goes "treasure hunting" in his local junkyard and here he finds a girl with wings, one of which has been ripped off. He immediately sets about crafting a new mechanical wing for her so that she is able to fly once more.

That is the gist of the story but there is soooo much more to it - namely that the girl (Mia) has a dark side and unleashes it on some bad guys, as well as Theo visiting a forest (where he encounters a couple of tricksy faeries) in search of a doctor whose medicines might just be able to help his new friend.

If you enjoy Studio Ghibli, I think you will love this!

Видавництво Lantsuta вже не один раз дивувало нас проєктами, які вони взяли під своє крило до видання. Але хто ж очікував від їхньої команди ще й манґу? «Понад хмарами» авторки Ніке — це онґоїнґ, який уже нараховує завершених чотири томи, а п’ятий знаходиться в процесі створення. Цікаво, що ця манґа видається в палітурці тільки в Україні, у всіх інших країнах у м’якій обкладинці. Не знаю чи вартувало так робити, але виглядає дуже й дуже класно.

Коли я побачив обкладинку «Понад хмарами: Дівчина, що впала з небес», то ще навіть не знав, що ця манґа спершу була опублікована у Франції (що є вельми цікавим фактом). Мене привернула естетика стім-панку з того, що я зміг знайти в мережі, гарна обкладинка та досить цікава анотація. І я вирішив спробувати. Хотілося б сказати, що ця історія про магію та пригоди справила на мене велике враження, як ось перший альбом «Зоряного замку. 1869» Алекса Аліса, де також маємо стімпанковий світ. Та все не зовсім так.

Джей — сирота, який має вміння створення винаходів і пристрасть до читання. Книги йому дали змогу втекти від реального світу, що допомогло впоратися з втратою своєї сім’ї в молодому віці. Він завжди прагнув пережити захоплюючі та дивовижні пригоди, як ті, про які він читав у своїх улюблених історіях. Молодий хлопець є механіком і живе в маленькому містечку та виконує різні буденні завдання свого майстра. Одного разу, шукаючи корисні речі на сміттєзвалищі, він натрапляє на поранену дівчину з крилами. У той час, як люди з тваринними рисами не є рідкістю в цьому світі, де живе Джей, люди з крилами зустрічаються неймовірно рідко. Тому він розуміє, якщо доправить дівчину до лікарні, це може поставити її під загрозу. Натомість він забирає Мію додому й доглядає за нею, бо окрім того, що вона мало що пам’ятає, то ще і втратила одне крило. Джей клянеться створити їй нове за допомогою власної майстерності та спробувати знайти шлях до її додому (і тут чомусь я згадав дракона Беззубика із мультфільму «Як приборкати дракона»).

Насамперед на що хочу звернути увагу, то це малюнок художниці Ніке, яка не раз висловлювала свою любов до проєктів студії Ghibli. І це помітно направду. Стиль малюнку є надзвичайно милим, але водночас схематичним. Мені не вистачало грубих і чітких контурів, що б додало малюнку виразності. Але з розповіддю він справляється добре, тому за деякий час звикаєш і вже не так сильно звертаєш на стиль художниці.

Щодо героїв, то Джей і Мія відчуваються традиційними архетипами персонажів. Джей — добрий і щирий хлопець, чия сміливість і винахідливість допомагають подолати важкі випробування. Мія ж — чарівна й мила дівчина, чия невинність протиставляється з темною силою всередині неї. Так, персонажі є цікавими, але для мене такі персонажі не є чимось унікальним.

Сюжет у манзі логічний і досить простий, розвивається поступово й передбачувано. Мабуть, основна претензія до цього тому є те, що він занадто прямолінійний. Я розумію, що ця манґа створена зовсім для іншої аудиторії й тут ви не знайдете глибокої або складної історії. Та все ж можна було додати більше загадок і інших ходів, щоби було цікавіше. Навіть лиходії, якісь не до кінця лиходії, бо їхні мотиви є знову ж таки банальними. Однак я думаю, що в цієї манґи є потенціал, і сподіваюся, що в міру розвитку світу все стане кращим. Оскільки це початок серії, коли багато речей встановлюється одночасно, то можна пробачити певні речі. Тому думаю, що ще один том візьму, адже в другій половині вже почалися, як не які пригоди, та з’явилася інтрига. А далі вже буде видно, як піде розвиток подій.

Була певна, що сподобається більше. Інтрига й пригоди почалися аж після половини тому.
Якщо чесно, чекала більше стімпанку, якихось машинерій, фабрик, а насправді це радше фентезі з різними расами з фантазійно-мрійливою естетикою.
Манґа орієнтована на молодших підлітків, певно, я вже зовсім пролітаю цю ЦА. Спробую ще взяти другий том, якщо й далі буде ванільненько, то, певно, більше збирати не буду.
Мальовка простіша, ніж я сподівалась. От на тому рівні, ніби художник вправний, але не мав або часу, або помічників, щоб до пуття все затонувати.

This is one of the most stunning manga I have ever read!

Theo, an orphan is taken in at a mechanics shop, and his only love is stories and books. It's his escape, and how he deals with the horrors life has dealt him. He spends his spare time in a junk yard looking for "treasure" This boy is just TOO PURE and has the BEST IMAGINATION.

This leads him to discover a young little girl with wings. One of her wings has been torn off, and she is suffering when Theo finds her. What he doesn't know, is that this young girl has a dark side to her. Theo protects her, and does everything he can to bring light and life into her world again. He even is attempting to rebuild a new wing for her.

I fell hard and fast for this series. I teared up more than once. I squealed with delight out loud as I read it. It is worth every moment you give it. I love it so much! Please pick up this beautiful manga!

Un joli petit manga assez inspiré de l'univers de Final Fantasy (le côté steampunk et les personnages mi-humains, mi-animaux) et que j'ai plutôt apprécié.
Les dessins sont très jolis même si parfois un peu fouillis et j'avais à certains moments des difficultés à tout distinguer.
C'était mignon et je lirai peut-être la suite à l'occasion.

Simply gorgeous. If you want a book that feels like reading a studio ghibli movie, this is the manga for you. Beautiful in its art style and writing, I found myself fully immersed in these pages and can’t wait to see where the story takes me.

I picked this one up because of the cover, the title and the synopsis, all of which gave me full on Ghibli vibes. Luckily, this manga had compelling elements — the characters, the plot and the lore - that reeled me right in.

This is such a unique manga! The art is lovely, if not a bit busy. All the texture is made with lines and watercolors rather than tones so it can feel a bit busy. But the story is really interesting! Theo meets a girl named Mia who has a single wing. They discover she has magic and need to figure out how to help her learn how to control it. Theo is a big bookworm who dreams of adventure and he finally found it!

I’m definitely looking forward to more!

Edit 7/14/22: I’m curious to see how this will end. We aren’t getting anywhere quickly and everything is still a mystery surrounding Mia. Still cute and the art is stellar.

Beyond The Clouds is a fantastical, steampunk manga series following Theo, a young mechanic yearning for adventure, as he embarks on a journey after finding an amnesiac girl with wings. Truly a magical start to a new series!

Smoke hangs heavy over the dream-like city in Beyond The Clouds and young Theo learned that there was particular kind of magic in books, fantastical stories that could allow him to go anywhere — within him that yearning for adventure is still there. As a mechanic at Chikuwa's repair shop, he always makes time to head to the junkyard and discover treasures. However, what he isn't expecting is to find a girl with wings who has no memory of where she's from, thus the adventure begins.

As Theo and Mia begin their delightful friendship, he always makes it a point to mention that Mia's sorrow and loneliness is something he knows all too well. So when he takes it upon himself to help erase her fears with the power of a good story. Their friendship was an absolute highlight of this first installment and although, there is more to the dynamic I hope gets explored, Theo's kind heart helps both him and Mia in ways he wasn't expecting.

Through its slice-of-life atmosphere Nicke pulls you into Theo's daily routine as a mechanic, running errands, digging for lost treasures, and his adept skills to help Mia adjust to losing a wing and her memory. Their friendship is the foundation for the intense scenes woven throughout Vol. 1 from the exploration of Mia's unique shadow powers and Theo's quest to find a special medicine that can cure Mia later on in the volume. I think those emotions propel the story in ways I that were so unexpected, but very much appreciated.

When I first discovered this manga through the GORGEOUS cover, it's natural to assume the story within will be equally whimsical, with a dream-like quality to it, but what I got was something much more. While this volume is a really broad stroke introducing an intricate, steampunk world it also leaves you with a sense of nostalgia for stories that've left you feeling that any fantastical world is possible.

Nicke's artwork is presented with a light, sketchy quality to it leaving readers enchanted at the scope of the world we've barely scratched the surface of. No matter what page you turn to, there's a feeling of wonder that just never leaves you the more you follow Theo and Mia. The detailed panel frames and artwork that exists outside the confines of the panel boxing was also reminiscent of Kamome Shirahama's style, which is one of my favorites. The cover also reflects the sheer beauty of the watercolor style in a rainbow of colors.

Mixing the soft, sketch-like art and underlying whimsy of the plot, conjures the feeling of reading a beloved fairytale or reminiscing on a childhood story. The way Nicke wondrously succeeds in leaving readers with this indescribable feeling of nostalgia and wonder is in one word, magical.

The world is established with much detail about the creatures (anthros and hybrids), but also an even more magical forest outside of Yellow Town filled with fairies and unique plants. The backgrounds really cements you into the steampunk/fairy tale setting as well.

While all these elements work so incredibly well to establish a rich world, it felt like there wasn't enough time to explore or take it in. We are sort of thrust into the setting which is a beautiful backdrop that I would have loved to learn more about from the customs, locations, and setting as a whole. Driven by it's plot, I do hope to learn more about the world and all the minute details established here in future volumes.

Beyond The Clouds is a quiet, magical story filled with stunning artwork, a unique cast of characters, establishing a compelling, spellbinding world and a plot that will leave you with a sense of nostalgia, whimsy, and adventure!

C'était une bonne lecture mais je ne suis pas hyper convaincue par ce premier tome. L'univers est enchanteur et les dessins sont plaisants bien qu'ils aient un côté éthéré, une forme d'imprécision qui atteint parfois ses limites. L'intrigue somme toute classique a manqué d'intérêt et c'est ce qui me freine un peu pour continuer la série.

A peine acheté, à peine dévoré ! Encore une fois c'est la couverture et ses couleurs qui m'ont conquise d'emblée !
L'univers ! La ville jaune, une cité où règne une atmosphère enfumée peuplée d'humains et d'hybrides animaux. Théo, un jeune mécanicien, trouve dans "L'île aux rêves" Mia, une petite fille ailée blessée.
Avec cette histoire, on plonge directement dans un monde qui m'a fortement fait pensé aux oeuvres de Miyazaki (notamment le château dans le ciel, rien que la couverture ; et Nausicaa de la vallée du vent pour une autre partie du livre). C'est donc logiquement que j'ai été de suite conquise. le dessin est à la fois détaillé et très épuré. Les personnages ont vraiment des bouilles et des des expressions toutes plus mignonnes les unes que les autres.
On est clairement dans de l'heroic fantasy classique mais ce n'est pas dérangeant et le mystère qui plane autour du personnage de Mia tient le fil et donne vraiment envie de découvrir la suite (bon sachant que le premier tome vient tout juste de sortir il va falloir attendre un peu) il me tarde !! Une épopée magico-steampunk qui promet de bien belles choses !!
Je suis tombée en admiration devant les pages de titres des chapitres !!!
Un vrai coup de cœur de fantasy en manga !!

Our hero, the youngest apprentice, is sent to do maintenance on the town clock, and run some errands, and stop by a junkyard in search of some useful junk.

What he finds is a little girl with wings. Or one wing, and a wound where the other one was.

Takes care of her, with some help from the other prentices. Reads books. Tries to make a new wing. And trouble finds them.

Beyond the Clouds (vol 1.) is glimpse at a whimsical world filled with curious creatures. Cute and quick paced, there seems to be so much left unexplored within this manga. The clichés and slightly choppy dialogue make this first book feel a bit underwhelming. However, the beautiful illustrations and the potential to create a uniquely wonderful story have piqued my interest enough to read on.

What a beautiful new manga! The art is gorgeous and gives me a Studio Ghibli vibe. So it was no surprise for me to read that the artist has been inspired by Miyazaki, among others. But the story is wonderful too. I love the characters. I love that Theo is so gentle and kind, as well as a dreamer who loves books. There's humor, danger, mystery. It's just wonderful. I was not ready for it to end and I can't wait for the next one!
