Of Cloaks & Daggers #1

A Thieving at Carlton House

Rate this book
The Home Office has asked Sir Bertrand Thorndike to head an investigation into stolen royal jewels. And as with everything concerning the Prince Regent, discretion is paramount.

It's the perfect chance for Bertie to step out of his brother's long shadow. Unfortunately, his superior, the Duke of Haverly, has a plan that makes him balk. In order to sell his cover, Bertie must play the part of a man looking for love, ready to reform his rakish ways.

Philippa Cashel escaped a life as one of society's best-known courtesans and now devotes her time to helping other women in dire straits. Her hope is that laboring hard enough at her charity work will allow her to feel worthy of God's forgiveness of her past. So when Sir Bertrand Thorndike approaches her about becoming an agent of the Crown, she is skeptical. Why her? She's focused on getting her school for underprivileged women up and running, not on cloak-and-dagger skullduggery.

But when two of Philippa's rescued girls become targets, Philippa risks partnering with Bertie to find the loot and stop a killer.

Are you ready for a story where secrets run deep, danger is ever-present, and grace shines brightest in the darkest moments? A Thieving at Carlton House by Erica Vetsch pulls you into a world where trust is hard-earned and faith is the lifeline that sustains. Philippa Cashel’s journey captivated me—her growth isn’t just about solving mysteries; it’s about the power of grace, love, and forgiveness, even when the stakes feel impossibly high.

What stood out to me? Marcus’ and Dolly’s sincere and unshakable faith and Philippa’s growing faith and trust in God. Having escaped a life of shame and now devotes herself to lifting others out of despair, her reliance on God shines. Her heart’s mission is clear: helping others while embracing His mercy for herself. One of my favorite quotes captured this beautifully: “...surely you do not judge who is worthy of the Gospel and who is not? Are we all not unworthy? If we were worthy or able to save ourselves, we would not need a Savior.” Philippa’s journey reminds us we don’t have to clean up before coming to Christ—He meets us right where we are.

The cloak-and-dagger excitement of stolen royal jewels had me hooked, but it’s the layers of love, grace, and redemption that have stayed with me. Erica Vetsch masterfully brings to life not just the spy games, but a deeper, more meaningful battle—the battle for redemption and second chances. Sir Bertrand Thorndike might be out to solve a mystery, but his personal journey toward seeing Philippa for who she truly is—redeemed and valued in God’s eyes—is just as compelling. I loved watching his perspective shift, especially as he reflected on his own role: “This…is not about us. It’s about doing what is right by those who need our help. We’ve been blessed by God to hold the positions and possessions we have…” Bertie learns that real strength comes not from solving problems, but from trusting in a plan far greater than his own.

There’s something deeply reassuring in how Philippa’s faith anchors her through uncertainty and danger. “Where there is life, there is hope,” she says at one point, and those words felt like a lifeline in a world filled with peril. Philippa’s hope isn’t just a fleeting sentiment—it’s rooted in God’s promises. Her resilience echoes James 1:27, reminding us that true faith is demonstrated in caring for the most vulnerable.

Carlton House brings together all the elements I love in a Regency adventure: secret plots, surprising twists, and tender romance. It’s a story that stirs the heart and points us back to the unwavering love of God. Forgiveness, both of others and ourselves, is a running thread throughout the book, and it’s wrapped up in the beauty of grace—unearned, yet freely given. As Philippa grapples with her past, she reminds us that our worth comes not from what we’ve done, but from who we are in Christ.

This novel was a beautiful balance of action, heart, and faith—I'm already looking forward to the next book in this series! If you enjoy Regency intrigue with a powerful faith arc, this is a must-read.

If you have enjoyed Erica’s “Serendipity and Secrets” series and her “Thorndike and Swann” series than you will love this book! But even if you haven’t read them, it’s still great! I loved seeing that the two main characters are from the other two series! I was so excited! And they are so good together!! I love Bertie and Philippa. I also liked seeing Marcus, Charlotte, Juliette, Daniel and more characters again. I enjoyed the mystery of the story and the Christian content. This doesn’t really have romance but that’s ok I’m sure book 2 will be getting to that. Overall, I loved it his book and can’t wait for book 2!

Here Vetsch brings us another engaging story set in Regency England with a Christian worldview. The network of family, friends, and spies she has built in this world provides a perfect backdrop for a seemingly simple theft that gives Bertie Thorndike a run for his money. At the same time, Philippa is attempting to get a school off the ground for girls and women who want to escape their life on the streets, and she runs into obstacles and irritations that leave her questioning if she's in over her head. Bertie has some development, but Philippa's characterization arc is the highlight here, and we're left with a hint of more to come for Bertie. I love the way Vetsch weaves themes of faith and forgiveness into the book without being preachy.

Erica Vetsch has created some of my favorite characters, large and small, so the fact that we get to continue seeing these characters makes me so happy. All good things must come to an end, but that doesn't mean the end has to come quickly. I'm glad Vetsch has managed to buck the tradition of trilogies in this genre and keeps connecting the various trilogies to the same world. Yet at the same time, a new reader could start with this book and not be lost, since relevant things from the past are explained when/as needed. Of course, I would still recommend starting at the beginning for the full, rich experience, but diving in here is fine too. Either way, I highly recommend this book for fans of this genre and time period, whether you like romance or not, because there is some, but it's not the focus of the book.

--------

I have never written a pre-review before, but my husband just pre-ordered this as a present for my recent birthday, and I just about fell over when I saw that it's a continuation of Vetsch's previous 2 series and that Marcus Haverly is mentioned again!! I said in my review of Children of the Shadows that I wasn't ready to leave this world yet, and now I don't have to!

I didn’t love this as much as I was hoping too. I’m not quite sure why… But I am very intrigued by the end and the set up for the next book in the series. Erica Vetsch’s writing is excellent so please give her a try if you love Christian historical fiction!

Welcome back to the Haverly universe where a few privileged aristocrats work undercover to keep the crown and country safe. If you are a fan of Ms. Vetsch and her Regency books, you will be thrilled to immerse yourself in this story.
Bertram Thorndike has a new assignment: to change his persona and track down missing jewels that were stolen from the Prince Regent. In addition he is asked to be on the board of a charity for fallen women run by Phillipa Cashel and Dorothy Stokes. As the story progresses, there are hints of a romance between Bertie and Phillipa.
The author depicts the flavor of the Regency era and brings depth and warmth to her characters. The plot was mesmerizing, intriguing and mystifying. Just as Bertie thinks he has a lead on the case, another obstacle appears. He needs to prove himself before all is lost.
I was pleased to reconnect with characters from previous books, especially Daniel Swann who gives Bertie sound advice.
The themes of second chances, redemption, the consequences of bitterness, forgiveness and a clear gospel message were laced throughout the story. “Grace and forgiveness are a gift from God.Not something we earn.”
I am anxious to see what is on the horizon for Bertie and Phillipa in the next book.

A Thieving at Carlton House was such a captivating story! It is the beginning of a new series titled Of Cloaks & Daggers and does connect with the author’s previous two series. You don’t have to have read the other series of books to enjoy this one, however, if you do, you will have a deeper appreciation of the lives of the two main characters. They have very interesting backstories. You will also enjoy seeing other characters from the earlier books show up or be referenced in this one.

In this series, the author is following Philippa and Bertie, two people who have had very different lives from each other, yet are both at important impasses in their lives. This story is not a romance, however, there are some hints that there could be a slowly building admiration between them that could turn to more in the future.

I truly enjoyed this mystery from start to finish. There was a compelling investigation in which Bertie played a leadership role. There was also the establishing of a special school for women who needed rescuing from the streets. It was wonderful to get to see things from Philippa’s perspective and think back on how much she has grown since we first met her in the Serendipity & Secrets series. I’m really looking forward to reading more books in this series!

Really excited to continue with this series and these characters. (And to go back and read Erica’s backlist because this is definitely full of ALL kinds of Easter eggs/connections)

It was a nice start up story for a new series/adventure.

“A Thieving at Carlton House” offers an engaging blend of mystery and redemption. Philippa Cashel’s sanctification is central to the story, and her work to help women in need reflects that transformation. Her relationship with Sir Bertrand Thorndike stands out for its respect and mutual admiration as they join forces to recover the stolen jewels. The Dowager’s blunt humor brings to mind Violet Crawley from Downton Abbey, adding a welcome touch of wit. I also appreciated how the theme of forgiveness is woven throughout, reminding us that withholding it can keep us trapped.

3.5 ⭐️ (quick review because I forgot to sooner after reading!) I was excited when I realized this book picks up after Erica Vetsch’s previous regency books 😊 it was fun to see familiar characters. It did take me a bit to get into this particular story, but once it picked up I really enjoyed it.

There’s not a romance in this book, but it felt very heavy at times. I think that’s because there’s so many references to former prostitutes. Having said that, thank you to the author for writing that into a story without going into detail!

Overall, I enjoyed this book, and was eager to read book 2!

"Forgiveness does not excuse behavior. Forgiveness keeps another person's behavior from destroying your own heart."

Oh, what glorious Regency fun! I loved Sir Bertrand from Thorndike & Swann series and am so happy to see him "lead" his own series, so to speak. Beneath the drunken facade, Bertie has always been clever, intuitive, efficient and charming and now we get an up close and personal look at his heart, past, and dreams. His forever loyal heart to friends and family is endearing as is his very slow recognition of Philippa as more than an acquaintance. There isn't much romance here between Bertie and Philippa but I suspect that will unfold as the series progresses. Philippa is a strong woman, driven by sole purpose of rescuing trafficked women, but she is also full of compassion. Her past is heart-breaking but forgiveness and true acceptance of God's grace work to heal her brokenness. There is plenty of mystery and intrigue as Bertie, an agent for the Crown, and Bow Street team up to sift out the thief from the Prince Regent's dwelling. The mystery is quite fascinating and I loved being able to catch up with Marcus, Charlotte, Daniel, Juliette and others from previous books.

Fans of Regency mysteries would absolutely adore this book. I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Kregel Publications via JustRead Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

Do you want a book with twists and turns, and then when you think you have everything figure out, it twists again? Then you should read this book.

My heart broke at the plight of the young girls who did what they felt they had to do. I was infuriated at the way they were treated when seeking help. And my heart soared at the love others showed.

You get mystery, suspense, and an emotional attachment in this unashamedly Christian book. What more could you possibly want?

First In A New Series! Bravo!

A perfect beginning to the “Of Cloak and Dagger” series, Erica Vetsch integrates characters from the Thorndike and Swann series (yay!) and brings them to the forefront.

But, how will Sir Bertrand Thorndike, better known as “Bertie”, succeed in solving a theft involving the Prince Regent’s residence where there are more servants than one can count? Aside from that, Bertie doesn’t know whom he can trust, doesn’t have much faith in himself and is excruciatingly afraid to fail.

Philippa Cashel, a former courtesan, knows what it is like to be forced into a life where few survive with minimal scars. An awful reality of the Regency era, women and even girls that were not yet fourteen sell themselves to provide for their families or because they were thrust out on their own with nowhere to go. Now that Philippa has been rescued from this life, she is determined to give these societal victims a safe place to live and the skills needed to begin a new life.

While balancing a plea for necessary funds and location, Philippa is faced with the possibility that all of her work could come crashing down when two girls she placed in service within Carlton House become suspected of theft.

This is a lovely Erica Vetsch story with an audiobook format so very well done by narrator Anne Flosnik. The dialog encompasses terms and phrases from the era and successfully places the reader among the streets of London, Carlton House and Asbury’s broken down estate, not to mention an expertly embedded spiritual thread that naturally occurs within the lives of the characters.

Two favorite quotes-

“…reputation and character are not to be confused. One is what people think you are, and one is what you actually are.”

“He is not worthy of forgiveness. Who among us is?…If our redemption depended upon our being worthy of it, we would either not need redeeming because we were already worthy, or we would miss out entirely because we are all unworthy and in need of redemption. Grace and forgiveness are a gift from God, not something we earn.”

This book is suitable for teens and older with no inappropriate intimate scenes and no bad language. I received this book from the author/publisher free of charge, with no expectation of a positive review. I also purchased the audiobook.

Bertie! I absolutely adored Bertie in the Thorndike and Swann series. I am so very happy that now he gets his own books. And we get a peek at some of our favorite characters from the Serendipity & Secrets series and Thorndike & Swann series too!

I love a good spy, mystery book and this one did not disappoint. Intrigue, suspense, and faith. I did guess whodunnit early on but there were a few unexpected twists too.

Sir Bertrand, Bertie, is intelligent and witty and now leading a team for the Duke of Haverly. Philippa is determined and intelligent. She is fighting to rise above her past and wanting to make a difference. Philippa is learning about God’s redemption through it all.

An ex-courtesan, a secret spy ring, and stolen jewels ... what's not to love? Include depth in both plot and character and a strong spiritual theme of forgiveness, and it's a winner all around. Better yet, it's the first book of her new series, Of Cloaks and Daggers. I was also excited to find many of her previous books are loosely connected this series. Yay! If I find an author I like, I don't mind going back and reading everything that leads up to the current book.

If you enjoy regency romance, I highly recommend Erica Vetsch.

A Thieving at Carlton House by Erica Vetsch is a Regency mystery with a hint of goodness for people who have been shunned by society. With heart, Vetsch dives into the characters who want to make a better life for those who can use it. Readers will enjoy seeing other characters from Vetsch other novels make an appearance and actually help the plot. The mystery drives part one of the story, and it was handled nicely. I like the way the mystery works with the other plot driving the story. Vetsch handles both story lines nicely. It was nice to see the main characters who were sidelined characters in the previous books. Really no romance in this edition, but Vetsch did leave a potential romance on the table. Similarly, I enjoyed the setting. The house that was being worked on came alive before my imagination. Vetsch does a wonderful job at crafting a story with heart and a hint of mystery that drove the storyline. I really enjoyed the story, and need to catch up with the first three books with these familiar characters. A Thieving at Carlton House by Erica Vetsch features a mystery and a plot line that is driven to make life better for others. A nicely handled story. I recommend it.

This book is another brilliantly written Regency Era adventure courtesy of master storyteller Erica Vetsch. It kicks off her Of Cloaks and Daggers series in a big way. I love her Serendipity & Secrets series and her Thorndike & Swann Regency Mystery series and was thrilled to reconnect with many of my favorite Regency characters from those stories as they embark on a new rousing adventure featuring Bertie and Philippa as lead characters. Ms. Vetsch makes the Regency Era come alive once again in this story filled with mystery and intrigue that kept me totally immersed from beginning to end. Hopeful romantic undertones add interest and possibility for future blossoming. I especially appreciate the strong faith thread woven naturally throughout the story and how it is lived out in the lives of the beautifully crafted characters. I love this book, and it is one of the best reads of the year for me. I highly recommend it as a must read for Inspirational Historical Romance fans. NOTE: This book can be easily read as a standalone although there are many carry over characters from the two previous series. I highly recommend those books, also!

the mysterious start to a new regency series from erica vetsch!

sir bertrand thorndike is assigned to investigate stolen royal jewels—and of course, the crime doesn't stop with these missing valuables. former courtesan philippa cashel could be useful the investigation, but both she and bertie are skeptical of the partnership. still, as the danger ramps up, they'll need to work together to solve the mystery.

a thieving at carlton house has a lot to offer the historical-fiction reader. the mystery kept my interest through some surprising reveals and discoveries, the characters proved well-rounded and full of depth—philippa's character especially allowed for an exploration of historical reality i haven't really seen before—and the faith elements woven through it all offer great insight, truth, and hope.

it's worth the read.

—language: none
—spice: none
—faith: strong faith themes
—content: mentions of prostitution, murder

I don’t know what to say about this book. It’s one of those where I didn’t have strong emotional feelings while reading, which is something I typically like in a book, but it has me thinking hard about everything well after finishing. I’m so happy I read it, especially as I head into book 2, which is only heightening my love for A Thieving at Carlton House. Like a can of Pringles, you can’t eat just one; only in this case, you can’t read just one. I may have to go back and binge everything Erica Vetsch has written.

This book follows Sir Bertrand Thorndike, who’s leading an investigation into some stolen royal jewels. It’s his first big case as the lead investigator rather than working under someone else. His confidence wavers in this new role—sometimes he feels like he doesn’t know what he’s doing, which is a little disconcerting. On the advice of Duke Haverly, the head of the agency, Bertie enlists the help of the duke’s sister-in-law, Philippa Cashel. Philippa is quite adept at gauging someone’s honesty. She’s a little apprehensive about assisting because she’s highly involved with her own work. A former, highly sought-after courtesan who has turned her life around, Philippa is now a Christian and runs a charity for women escaping that life, providing housing and teaching them new skills. When two of the young women she rescued become targets, Philippa finds herself working closely with Bertie.

I pretty much had the thief pegged early on, but it didn’t detract from the story. Everything was still very intriguing—especially learning about Philippa’s past life, her faith journey, and her relationship with her half-sister, Charlotte, and Charlotte’s husband, Marcus Haverly. That alone could have been a wonderful story by itself. I liked Bertie; he becomes more emotional as the book goes on and even questions himself about it, which I found endearing. Even the villains and shady characters had something about them that made you go, “Hmm…”

This is definitely a five-star book; well deserved. Although I’m not normally a re-reader, I could see myself picking this up again, if for no other reason than to increase my vocabulary. This story is full of those Regency-era words that are intelligent and beautiful but rarely used today. If you love historical fiction, you absolutely cannot miss this one

What a world that Erica Vetsch has created for Sir Bertrand Thorndike and Philippa Cashel! If you've read any of the author's previous titles, you'll be acquainted with many familiar names. Stepping back into the realm of espionage and war rooms, stolen jewels quickly escalates into so much more. I enjoyed getting to meet Miss Cashel as she assists women who want to live reformed lives and to see how her past has shaped her ability to care for the downtrodden. At the same time, seeing the veil lifted on Sir Thorndike and hearing from his perspective creates a fascinating contrast between the two characters who are more alike than they realize.

While mysterious schemes are afoot, I love that this book is about more than a complex case. Delving into the topic of forgiveness, this book presents the difficulty of fully turning lifelong betrayal and pain over to God in a way that is relatable and understanding to others who have experienced the same hurt. The author conveys just how hard forgiveness can be in walking readers through this challenging journey while gently nudging them with truths from the Bible. As my mind was engaged in the whodunit part of the book, my heart was becoming softened to how God can help us to release others and their sin unto Him. If you're looking for a story of two people seeking to honour God through their giftings and skills, A Thieving at Carlton House will steal your attention.

WOW!!

I absolutely loved the Thorndike & Swan series, and this new Cloak & Dagger series is already shaping up to be equally as phenomenonal. This new tale is all mystery while we get to know our favorite new characters. I read both the book and had an opportunity to listen to the audiobook. Both are fabulous!

Philippa might be one of the most unique FMCs I have read. There is a lot of mature subject matter surrounding her as a former cortesean and in her new line of work helping young women leave that same lifestyle. She is also the illegitimate daughter of an Earl, so the deck is seriously stacked against her in life. She is plucky and resilient, independent and feisty. She desires to open Eleos, a school for women exiting the lives of women of the night and rehabilitating them with new skills so they can earn honorable money. Except everyone wants a say in her school, and she has to strike a balance of saying yes to move things forward and declining well-meaning interference.

Her path crosses with Sir Bertrand after a theft of jewels from the Prince Regent has him seeking her help with some of her girls. He is different in the way he treats Philippa... like she matters and isn't filth. There really isn't a romantic relationship between these two (at least not yet!) because Philippa is too wary of controlling me, and Bertrand is satisfied in his bachelorhood. Kind of sad for us, but the mystery was too intriguing!

The case of the missing jewels was suspenseful, and more treacherous than what anyone knew. Many secrets are uncovered, and they will ultimately jeopardize people who don't deserve it. Not all is as it seems in the Ton or at Eleos. I know I enjoyed every minute figuring it all out!

A Thieving at Carlton House was the first book I have read written by Erica Vetsch and I look forward to reading more. I was swept up into the story and could not put the book down. It was like watching one of those older BBC murder mystery series. It was an easy read full of vocabulary.
The character development was good. I enjoyed getting to know Philippa and watch her grow, especially in her faith. All the characters were great, and I look forward to getting to see more.

The storyline and setting were fun. I enjoyed the mystery aspects. Hunting down the thief and the murder, while also trying to start up a house for women. It was a great storyline.

The historical element was great, maybe a little light. I didn’t feel like I was learning too much new stuff historically. But everything has its place. Just if you are a history nerd (which I am not, but I do enjoy learning) it might be lacking. I enjoyed it though.

Erica Vetsch did a fantastic job intertwining faith throughout the book. I was very pleased. It was a great reminder that nothing we can do can get us into heaven, and that everyone is worthy of salvation, no matter our past. God wants a relationship with all of us.

Erica Vetsch has done it again! Her newest novel, A Thieving at Carlton House, is an enjoyable read full of intrigue, mystery, and adventure—and an excellent start to what is sure to be a fantastic new series.

The book follows Sir Bertrand Thorndike, an agent to the Crown, and Philippa Cashel, a reformed courtesan, as they each begin a new chapter of their lives, while simultaneously dealing with the repercussions a stolen set of royal jewels has on each of their endeavors.

If I were to sum up the main theme of this novel, I would do so in two words: new beginnings. Not only do Bertie and Philippa each embark on new ventures into leadership, but they also both wrestle with stepping out in faith to fulfill the unique calling God has for each of them.

I eagerly await the next two installments in the Of Cloaks & Daggers series—and cannot wait to see how Bertie and Philippa continue to grow in character and faith, separately and together.

More than just an enjoyable read, A Thieving at Carlton House challenges readers to consider how their life can be used for the glory of God and the lifting up of those whom God has placed in their lives.

One final note: Those who are familiar with Vetsch’s other book series will be delighted to know that many, beloved characters from her previous novels pepper the pages of A Thieving at Carlton House! How delightful to spend more time with “old friends.”

This is a wonderful story about second chances in life and trusting God along the way. Philippa has done everything in her power to reinvent her life from a life of a former courtesan to opening a school for women like her. But it is hard getting people to respect her and take her seriously. She has a plan for rehabilitating the women, but she will need funds and people to stand by her vision. Sir Bertrand has spent much of his professional life undercover. But his newest mission will stretch his expertise and require him to change who he has become. As part of his future position he asked Philippa to join his task force. But given her past, she has no desire to work under the instruction of a man. Philippa needs more backers for her school idea , and who is newest on her board of directors? None other than Bertrand again. Forced Proximity at its finest. Bertrand with time sees the value of Philippa and he respects who she is and what's she's become, and she sees he isn't like all other men and treats her with respect. As new possible team mates they set out on what seems like a simple robbery... but as lives are lost and innocent jailed, and even Philippa being put at ris, there is much more to this robbery than meets the eye. Will Philippaofficiallyl join Bertrands team? Can he get her to trust him? Who is responsible for the robbery and murderer?

I liked this story! I was under the impression it was a romance, and technically it was more a mystery/suspense story. That said, the story kept me engaged and has me VERY curious what will happen next for Philippa and Bertrand! Perhaps Romance is in the future...

Even though this book was listed as romance, it was more mystery. There was chemistry between Bertie and Philippa but it was only the beginning of a friendship. I assume it will become romance in the upcoming books of the series. I love the slow build which makes the romance more authentic.
Philippa had many burdens upon her and I admired her strength of character to be more than others thought of her. Her intellect and loyalty made her a good partner for Bertie. I look forward to seeing them work more together.

Hands down, my favorite character created by this author has been Marcus Haverly (from The Gentleman Spy) who plays an important role in this story, but Sir Bertrand Thorndike has taken a close second since walking on the pages of the previous series. Now that he has his own series, he may move his way up. Highly recommend this story.

I am so excited about this new series! While there are ties to the authors previous books (and a really awesome family tree in this book!) you can read this one as a stand alone. BUT it is fun to tie all of the people together from her previous books if you want to read those at some point. This story is really great and I love Philippa Cashel's character. As a previous courtesan (prostitute), Philippa has quite a story of redemption and forgiveness that carries over into her desire to help others. There is terrific mystery and intrigue throughout this novel that I found to be well written. Personally I thought it was a bit obvious about half way through who the "bad guy" was but the details and the "why" didn't fully make sense until the end. There is a lot going on in this book and the reader really has to pay attention to fully grasp the story lines and different characters. I bet I could read it again and find things I missed the first time around! All that to say this is an enjoyable read and I highly recommend to those who enjoy a little mystery set during the Regency time period in England!

Four Stars.
