Social Reading Cultures on BookTube, Bookstagram, and BookTok

Rate this book
This book examines the reading cultures developed by communities of readers and book lovers on BookTube, Bookstagram, and BookTok as an increasingly important influence on contemporary book and literary culture. It explores how the affordances of social media platforms invite readers to participate in social reading communities and engage in creative and curatorial practices that express their identity as readers and book lovers.

The interdisciplinary team of authors argue that by creating new opportunities for readers to engage in social reading practices, bookish social media has elevated the agency and visibility of readers and book consumers within literary culture. It has also reshaped the cultural and economic dynamics of book recommendations by creating a space in which different actors are able to form an identity as mediators of reading culture.

Concise and accessible, this introduction to an increasingly central set of literary practices is essential reading for students and scholars of literature, sociology, media, and cultural studies, as well as teachers and professionals in the book and library industries.

What? You're expecting me to say more? Honestly, Social Reading Cultures is a good book and does exactly what it sets out to do---provide an overview of BookTube, Bookstagram, and BookTok. If you've been on any of these spaces, you probably know what the book is going to say. You might go, "oh!" a couple times, or have your ideas about what these spaces look like slightly altered, but for the most part, you won't be surprised.

And you'll probably pick up on a couple of the authors' odd argumentative swings (like Instagram's fixation on aesthetic book cover photo shoots, which rarely feature a human person in frame, is evidence of Instagrammers elevating the book above the human body lol; and its quick and incomplete dismissal [or at least setting-aside] of worries about the algorithm, publishing house interference, and the hugely white, female, and educated creator base of bookish influencers when it comes to the "democratizing" force of social media). For its few fumbles, though, the book offers a good eagle's eye overview of the various bookish social medias, how they intertwine, and how each is unique. Recommend for anyone starting to study bookish online spaces (me)!

This book is one of the most wonderful book I have ever read with a well constructed documentary.
