I was born in Teesside but now live in Scarborough on the stunning North Yorkshire Coast. My home inspired the creation of the fictional seaside town of Whitsborough Bay where I set many of my books although the Hedgehog Hollow series takes readers to a gorgeous new countryside setting in the Yorkshire Wolds.

I live with my husband, our teenage daughter and sprocker spaniel, Ella. I'm a self-confessed stationery addict with a ridiculously large collection of notepads who loves chocolate (although it doesn't love me), hedgehogs, 80s music, collectible teddy bears and lighthouses.

Other than a career detour into retail to set up and run my own teddy bear shop (the inspiration for novel Bear With Me), I've always worked in HR, specialising in resourcing, coaching and L&D. Writing always had to take a back seat to the day job until June 2020 when I left the world of HR to become a full-time author. I'm so very grateful to anyone who has bought or borrowed my books in whatever format, helping me fulfil a long-held dream of writing full-time. I still can't believe I get to spend every day chatting to my fictional friends and making stuff up.

Another fabulous read from Redland and I will be sorry when the series ends. Once more we return to Hedgehog Hollow but with Sam and Josh taking more of a backseat to the story. Initially I was worried that this wouldn’t have the same atmosphere as the previous books but in fact, this made for a refreshing and surprising tale.

Following immediately on from the previous book, this is definitely one where reading the series in order is essential. Not only to really connect with the characters and understand their relationships, but also because you can truly appreciate the cuteness of the hedgehogs! Personally, each time I read these books I find myself falling in love with these prickly creatures all over again and I think it is great that Redland has reinvented the hedgehog in such a lovely set of stories.

This time, Sam and Josh are off on their honeymoon. Although they head off on Safari, I loved how Redland adds in the hedgehogs’ foreign cousin – it is all so in keeping with the books. Yet, whilst they are gone, life at Hedgehog Hollow continues and this story focuses on Lauren, one of Sam’s close friends. Having an older, more mature character step forward definitely created a different sort of atmosphere and I enjoyed watching a character who has more experience and life choices, in comparison to the younger personalities that dominate the series.

However, I was completely surprised at the change in direction that Redland takes Lauren’s story. It was completely unexpected, particularly the revelations about Shaun. Over the story, Redland takes readers into the past as we learn more about Lauren’s background. Not only developing her character further, it gave an insight into the personality we see in Lauren in these books: it explains her emotional barriers and the strength she portrays to those around her, even if she doesn’t feel it inside. Yet, I am not sure if I have still recovered with the answers Lauren discovers and I wonder if a more obvious revelation would have worked better within the plot? It’s not something I can easily describe without revealing too much of the plot but, one thing is for sure, it certainly made for a more memorable story.

Despite Lauren being a central figure to this story, Sam’s character is still the lynch pin to Hedgehog Hollow. I saw a lot of myself in Sam and could really relate to the vulnerabilities that she experiences over the novel. Reading these scenes were quite poignant and I felt so relieved that she had the support of Josh and her family – a complete contrast to the earlier books in the series. I could relate to how Sam was feeling and it was reassuring to see how she copes with her internal struggles. It definitely added to the realism of her character.

All in all, you definitely can’t go wrong with this series. It is full of such heart-warming… hedgehogs! The characters too, of course, are just as lovely and I like how they have evolved over the series. With just one book left, I know I will feel bereft finishing this series even though I know it will be covered in tinsel and snow. For once, Christmas can’t come soon enough!

With thanks to Boldwood books, NetGalley and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Another great read from Jessica Redlands. This one was a follow-up from the last one and had all the ups and downs as in her previous books. Can't wait for her next book. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

This is my 5th visit to Hedgehog Hollow and I am still enjoying my time there, meeting up with both familiar and new characters and seeing what is going on in Samantha's life. Samantha and Josh have returned from their honeymoon and are quickly getting back to normal. She is a bit stressed, trying to settle in to married life, running the rescue center, planning for The Family Fun Day, and keeping a secret that will change all they had planned for starting their life together as a married couple. We also get a story from Lauren, Josh's aunt. Lauren has been married twice with both marriages ending in very different ways. She is still not sure what happened between her and Shaun, her BFF and love of her life, and she has never stopped loving him. Although she is happy for Josh and Sam, she has given up on love for herself. What Lauren doesn't know, is that she is about to get closure in her relationship with Shaun, so she can finally move on.

I really enjoyed this book, especially learning about Lauren, her past, her relationships and what is next for her. She is a lovely character, but has not had an easy life. Sometimes, our past has us making the wrong decisions and unfortunately that happens with Lauren. Just when she starts having feelings for a man again, something comes between them. It seems she is extremely unlucky at love. There are many secondary characters who also play a part in both Lauren's and Sam's story that flesh out the town and rescue center. The story is told from the POV of Lauren and Sam. Although there is story set in the past and present, the story meshes together well. There are parts of the story that had me laughing, and others that almost had me in tears. Life is not easy, we all have our trials and tribulations, and Jessica Redland shows us that everyone has things they are dealing with, but it doesn't mean we can't move forward and find what we are looking for. I enjoy Jessica Redland's writing, the descriptions, the well developed characters and the uplifting endings. She always leaves me with a smile on my face and wanting more. I always learn something about hedgehogs in every book and that is a recurring theme that is wonderful. As with all the books in this series, there are several themes including found family, complicated family relationships, community, friendship, bullying and emotional abuse, sexual identity, addiction, secrets, starting over, animal rescue, and reconciliation. I recommend this book to those who enjoy women's fiction, uplifting stories and animal rescue.

*Decisions*

This story is told from the points of view of Samantha the star of the whole series and Lauren, who is the aunt of Sam’s husband Josh

Samantha - fresh from her amazing dream honeymoon finds herself in herself having a personal crisis. She is keeping it bottled up because she is supposed to be on the same page as Josh but self doubt creeps in. They made a life changing personal decision and now she feels she may not be ready. Fresh off the back of their wedding she fears it may come between them.

Sam is so used to caring for others that when it comes to what she wants she seems to find a way of making lists and squeezing herself out of the equation and gets overwhelmed. How can they move forward…..

Lauren - she met and married the man of her dreams as children and were best friends who would conquer the world. One day he disappears out of her life, leaving her a note saying he could not go on and the next thing she receives divorce papers and she never hears from her again.

Over time she decides to get married again but this is not a total love match which ends in disaster. She throws herself into work and over 20 years later she receives a letter from her first love. In the meantime she has met someone in the wings who is easy to talk to and she wonders if there is a possibility for more….

This meet up she hopes will give her closure, but when he mentions he looks very different upon meeting again Lauren is speechless…. How will she move forward….

Are they both chasing dreams? Or are there other possibilities???

Thank you #NetGalley @Boldwood Books @BooksandTonic for a complimentary eARC of #ChasingDreamsAtHedgehogHollow by Jessica Redland upon my request. All opinions are my own.

Chasing Dreams at Hedgehog Hollow is #5 in the Hedgehog series. While Samantha and Josh are the main characters in book one of the series, each of the subsequent installments features a family member or a character in the community who is close to the couple. In this story, we learn about Lauren with a few chapters from Samantha’s point of view. In each installment, the author keeps us up to date with Samantha and Josh and the hedgehog rescue operation.

Stand-alone? Although this fifth installment of the Hedgehog series can be read as a stand-alone, a series is always best read in order for a richer reading experience (in my opinion). The author has created a large cast of characters (family and community) with complicated relationships that are somewhat difficult to remember and track unless you are reading the installments one right after the other. Redland does provide a list of characters at the beginning of the book for handy reference that I found myself referring to frequently. Despite the list, I think a reader jumping into the series with this installment might be a bit lost or overwhelmed with the number of characters.

I appreciate that the author keeps us up to date on Samantha and Josh, the foundational couple in the series. They won my heart in (book one) Finding Love at Hedgehog Hollow (my favorite of the series) and I continue with the series to follow their story arc.

Our main protagonist in Chasing Dreams at Hedgehog Hollow is Lauren (Josh’s aunt) and I love the themes of second chances and taking risks that her story explores. Lauren’s story is an interesting one. At midlife, Lauren has had two failed marriages and recently finds herself unemployed as a result of redundancy. This could be a story of despair, but the author infuses it with hope.

Several thoughtful themes include second chances, family and friendship, hope, sexual identity, secrets, starting over, supportive community/family, animal rescue, and complicated relationships.

If you enjoy stories that include animal rescue, the hedgehog rescue operation will add to your reading enjoyment! Jessica Redland has taught us a great deal about these cute creatures throughout the series.

Content Considerations: domestic abuse/controlling spouse, death from cancer (not a main character). ***The author explores difficult content in each of her books but with a light and sensitive touch.

Recommended for fans of heartfelt, page-turning women’s fiction, for readers who appreciate stories featuring animal rescue, and for those who love rural English settings. Again, I recommend the series in order.

It's really good to be back at Hedgehog Hollow and this is another great book in the series, and as the penultimate book, it has set up enough storyline threads, that makes me incredibly eager to read book 6, as I think it has been set up to phenomenal.

Although this is a Hedgehog Hollow novel, Samantha isn't really the main character at all this time around, Lauren who I don't really recall much about from previous books is.

We still get some chapters from Sammie's point of view, but the balance is weighted in favour of Lauren. Which is a shame, as although we get to see some of the Safari honeymoon, I was craving more of their time in Africa, given my love of any exotic setting.

Meanwhile we learn all about Lauren's first two marriages which couldn't be more different, and the first half of the book which felt rather sedate, but was all about laying the ground work, well the second half was utterly fabulous, and hooked me in properly.

I was definitely interested in Lauren's backstory, as well as her fledgling friendship with Riley. I was also happy to see yet another side of Chloe, and to see that more progress was being made with Sammie and her mum's relationship too.

Various tough topics are touched on, with Jessica Redlands's trademark sensitivity.

Whether you are new to the series, or returning and need a reminder there is a massive cast list at the start of the book to help re-immerse yourself into the various characters and their, often complicated links to each other!

This is a solid instalment in the series, not my new favourite, but has certainly whetted my whistle to see how the series will end in the Christmas book -which I can't wait to get my paws on.

Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

It was so good to return to Hedgehog Hollow once more
To reconnect with the folks there and the hedgehogs we adore.
An enthralling read with great characters, too,
One I have no hesitation in highly recommending to you.

With secrets, fresh starts and some tears,
A heartwarming story about overcoming your past and fears.
A wedding or two, confessions from the past
A decades old mystery resolved at last!

It is also about listening to others and making space
To support one another and whatever they face.
It explores relationships, expectations and dreams
And letting go of the past isn't as easy as it seems.

There's a character who I didn't like from the start
But now she's changed and has an interesting part
People don't always do what we expect them to
Most important of all is to your own self be true!

History, mystery, second chances?
New friendships, fresh starts, romances?
Another brilliant addition to Hedgehog Hollow books
This and all the others are definitely worth a look!

Now I can't wait to have the chance to read
The next (and final) book in the series - I need!
For my complementary copy, I say thank you,
As I share with you this, my honest review

I found this a little difficult to get into first which was surprising as I love the hedgehog hollow series and following Sam and her family & friends stories that said after a few chapters I was invested and loved Lauren’s story which explained a lot of why she was such a reserved character in the previous books, whilst also keeping us updated in Sam’s life and the happenings of Hedgehog Hollows.

Self confessed Jessica Redland addict, devotee and general lover of any series she puts in print. You therefore won’t be surprised when I say I loved this , but I’m also hesitant as the next book is the last in the series abd I don’t want this wonderful world, one of my happy places to end.

I suppose I should restrain my grieving and tell you how amazing this is, because as always Jessica has given us another fantastic book, you could probably get away with reading this as a stand-alone but I don’t know why you’d want to. I thoroughly recommend starting at the beginning and experiencing the joy of meeting all the characters, this village for the first time.

In this book we get Lauren’s story and trust me it’s unexpected, it’s interesting and we get answers, decisions and ultimately we get to know Lauren so much better, there are the cameos from old favourite faces - I love seeing how they’re getting on and growing, of course, the prerequisite support cast of unique characters, adorable people you want to take home as your own friends and the most fabulous community spirit.

Jessica’s books are always so complex, not just a light romance here, Jessica regularly has me in tears, she covers with sensitivity story lines of ‘real life’ problems, she always breaks my heart and somehow manages to rebuild it for me by the end and then I’m crying tears again but at least they’re the happy kind.

I will always recommend a Jessica Redlands book to anyone, especially anyone who needs an uplifting read, a book to give you a hug , one that although may hurt at some points you know you’ll be better for it by the end. This and most of Jessica’s books are a friend when you really need one.

Loved it!!! Love this series (but I still need to read the first two books in the series. I bought them, now I just need to read them. Too many books to read, not enough time.) It always takes me a little time to figure out who everyone is again, with all the parents, their spouses, friends and family. This book was a bit different than the previous one because it centered more around Lauren than Samantha. It was actually a nice change. I like Samantha, but at times she is a little too much. The back and forth about everything, afraid to tell her husband stuff and just other nonsense. Lauren's story was very interesting and not what I expected. I couldn't wait to finally learn the truth about Shaun's mysterious disappearance. There really wasn't any good reason for what he did. Ivy should have told Sam once she found out. She knew how much pain Lauren was in not knowing what happened to her husband. Shaun too the easy way out, he made all the decisions and never even consulted Lauren. If they loved each other and were the best friends that they both claimed, then he could have talked to her. His reason for leaving wasn't what I expected. He shouldn't have waited 26 years to contact her. Not sure why Jonathan would consider getting back together with Debs. Not sure why he ever allowed his wife to treat their daughter the way she did. Loved Luna and the little hoglets. Hedgehogs sound so cute, I wish we had wild ones that lived in our garden. I would definitely volunteer at Samantha's hedgehog rescue center.

Definitely recommend the book. Love the characters, story and writing style. Can't wait to see what happens next at Hedgehog Hollow. I'm guessing babies will be in the near future, although who knows if Sam will change her mind again. Look forward to reading more books by the author.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Boldwood Books through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Fabulous visit back to Hedgehog Hollow!
This time it’s Lauren who shares the spotlight, and what a fascinating story she has to share!
Lots of twists and surprises, it was a real drama filled time.
So lovely to catch up with everyone else too, and to see the sanctuary continue to grow and thrive.
Already looking forward to the next book in this fantastic book series.

If you’ve been to Hedgehog Hollow before, you’ll know that Samantha and Josh finally tied the knot on the first anniversary of the sanctuary’s opening – a lovely occasion, surrounded by friends and family (some of them a rather lovely surprise). But for Lauren, who’s Josh’s aunt, it was more a shock than a surprise – she’d rather come round to the idea of becoming more than friends with Samantha’s dad Jonathan, but she discovered that he seemed rather more interested in rekindling things with his ex-wife Debs. And this latest book is primarily Lauren’s story – although it never loses focus on developments at the rescue centre or Josh and Sam’s future lives – as we dip into the sadnesses of her past through her less favoured childhood and her two failed marriages. The second one might just have been a mistake – but the first was to Shaun, the love of her life, her true North, and she’s never really recovered from her heartbreak when he inexplicably walked away twenty-six years ago. And just now her present day life isn’t going too well either. While Sam’s away on her honeymoon, and her sister’s too busy with her new life to listen, she finds herself facing other big changes in her life – along with the unexpected opportunity to discover what really happened all those years ago.

Lauren’s whole story moves into rather unexpected territory that might have been a challenge for a lesser author – and I must say that I thought she totally knocked it out of the park. The issues were really sensitively handled, the whole subject so well researched, and the emotional side particularly affecting. And another part of her story that I really loved was her fledgling relationship with new friend Riley – such a lovely guy (shame about his job…), and I loved the whole handling of the common ground they shared and the way he stepped up when the chips were down. I wonder if I might find myself a Riley at my local garden centre? Ah well, if not, I’d certainly take some white mice as consolation!

Of course, life goes on at the Hollow – there are hedgehog lives to save, and the friends and family step in to keep things running while Sam and Josh are in Tanzania on their honeymoon. And we get to travel with them, although their storyline perhaps becomes rather more about honesty and trust and coming to terms with fears for the future than their experiences in paradise. And just for the sake of balance, I think I must mention that their trip was the only part of the book that might have disappointed me just a teeny bit – I never really got a strong sense of place, and it all turned a little bit too angsty for me. But I did thoroughly enjoy the ongoing stories of all the other characters – and, do you know, I think I need to drop the word “characters” because they’re all real people to me, and I feel totally invested in the way their lives move on.

If you haven’t read the other books in this lovely series (and, if you haven’t, why on earth not?!), you might just find that there’s rather a large cast to get your head around and to understand their back stories and the relationships between them. Sometimes too, when you’re reading a series, it’s easy to forget what happened last time, however involved you were in everyone’s lives for as long as you were reading. Worry not – there’s a really useful list of the recurring characters at the start of the book for you to refer to, and a “story so far” to bring you back up to speed. In fact, it’s all so well done that some people might just like to try this one as a standalone – but you might feel you were missing out on the background a little, and why deny yourself the pleasure?

I’ve written the sixth and final book in my head already – I know whose stories I’d like to read the most, and which of them I’d really love to find their happy ending. This is just such a perfect series of books – and as I think this was the best so far (and very highly recommended by me), could I dare to hope that the sixth might be even better?

REVIEW BELOW ~ 5 STARS
Oh what a joy it is to be back at Hedgehog Hollow, it feels like coming home. This series is one of those that I never want to end, I want to know every part of everyone’s life because they all have become like my friends.

I really enjoyed learning more about Lauren in this book. Her back story and why she appears so closed off to romance. When we find out what actually happened to her husband, its one of those “oh ok, didn’t see that coming at all” moments but it explains a lot and is dealt with clearly and sensitively. I think it was a brilliant addition to the beautifully heart-warming story that Chasing dreams is.

Jessica has a writing style that speaks to the heart. She creates her characters with such death and warmth that they just come alive on the page. I want to pop round to Hedgehog Hollow with cake and hugs and help out with the hedgehogs. I adore how much Phoebe and Darcie are just blossoming. Lauren hopefully being able to put her ghosts to rest. Sam and Josh newly married. I actually loved going on their Honeymoon with them, it brought out a whole new side to them that, for me made them even more a wonderful, perfect match.

There are many dreams yet to be achieved, a lot more dreaming and creating to be done. Hedgehog Hollow will go in my heart forever. One of the great things about Jessica is that she obviously not only has a knack for writing such beautiful stories she also believes in what she writes and that falls out of every single page. She is so invested in her characters that we become invested too. Just the perfect series.

There is a quote in the epilogue that reads “You don’t have to set out to write the best book every time; just the best book you’re capable of at that time” and this really made me think how hard it must be to be a writer yet hugely rewarding to. A little life lesson in there for us all.

This is book 5 of a 6 book series.

How can I be at book 5 already, that means only 1 book left to read of this delightful series which I have enjoyed from the outset. Oh well it’s true what they say, all good things must come to an end.

So book 5 has been just as delightful as previous books in the series. I really enjoyed getting to know Lauren more (Josh’s aunt), discovering her story, her past and her present journey. I really liked her story, I admit I that by the time Shaun’s reason for leaving was ultimately revealed, I had already guessed it, before it happened. There were no clues, it was just a feeling I had. Even though I figured it out before the reveal it didn’t spoil my enjoyment of the story in any way.

As always with Jessica books, there were some different sensitive issues being dealt with throughout the story, but in my opinion the author Jessica wrote about them very well, a very good job as always.

As with previous books, it was grand to be reacquainted with all of the other characters and seeing how they were getting on and experiencing new going ins with them all.

I’m looking forward to book 6, the last book but at same time, I’m not, as I don’t want my time at Hedgehog Hollow to end.

In this fifth addition to the series, the characters seem to have moved on a little. Samantha and Josh have had their dream wedding and the honeymoon over, arrive back to the daily problems at the hedgehog rescue centre. However, you do feel that life moves on and their ideas about how the centre is going to evolve in the future gradually take shape. Nothing is standing still. They also have to work out how their family is going to be in the future which is not straightforward.
The main focus of the story is Lauren, who is facing a major upheaval at work. She also meets someone who is bound up in all the changes and is struggling to come to terms with the end of her marriage. In addition to any romance, there are some serious issues in the background and some sad moments to face. I can't wait to see how the series ends and how life pans out for the ever- increasing group of family and friends. Roll on Book 6!
In short: major life changing moments for friends and family

We’re back at Hedgehog Hollow for the penultimate book in the series. I honestly think I may shed a tear when I finish the last one later this year. Poor Jessica Redland couldn’t even go on holiday without me stalking her around the Lake District earlier this year!

I know people who read this blog regularly are used to me sharing the dark worlds of Karin Slaughter and Chris Carter type authors but at the other end of the scale, I absolutely LOVE these books, it’s one of my most favourite series, hence my stalking of Jessica Redland.

The main character in this novel is Lauren (Josh’s Aunt), I won’t lie – I don’t actually remember her from earlier books 😮 and I was slightly disappointed not to spend more time with Samantha and Josh. They were present but not a much as in other books. It took a little while to get going but it was well worth the wait

As ever this book does include some difficult subjects (these could be TW for some) but they’re sensitively handled.

All of the books in this series are available on Kindle Unlimited.

I adore Jessica's books and was delighted to take part in the tour.

Another fabulous journey to Hedgehog Hollow. In this installment Lauren's story was the main focus and I found it highly emotive, credible and relatable.

As always the characters are familiar and I've loved seeing them coming into their own throughout the series.

If you happen to need a quick refresh you'll find a full cast listing at the beginning of the book.

Beautifully written, heartwarming and full of drama The more serious issues were handled sensitively.

Highly enjoyable, roll on the tour for the Christmas book, which is sadly our final visit to Hedgehog Hollow 😢

Many thanks to Rachel's Random Resources for my tour spot.

A fantastic continuation of this great series. I like the fact that the series is focused on Sam and Josh and each book then allows us to get to know someone close to them. It was lovely learning more about Lauren and her story. She is a lovely character and i loved Rylie’s caring nature. I suspect by the hints thrown in this book that there will possibally be more to come.

Just like with every previous book by Redland I really enjoyed this, especially getting to know more about Lauren as she’s been in the sidelines for all the previous books. I absolutely loved Riley and really was hoping for that connection between him and Lauren to blossom into something so special.

Sam and Josh are still there working tirelessly to manage their multitude of commitments and it really warms me every time that they hit a bump because you know that together they’ll get through it and it’ll make their relationship even stronger. They are both such lovely characters and always put others first instead of themselves, you only have to look at the rescue centre to see that.

I also loved hearing more from Phoebe and Darcie from the previous book, seeing them both so happy and relaxed together loving life was amazing and that’s all down to Sam and Josh. Their day trip to the aquarium and the beach felt so close as I could relate these memories to those of my childhood.

Another amazing instalment from Jessica for Hedgehog Hollow and I’m so excited to see what comes next! Thank you to Jessica and Rachel for allowing me to review such wonderful books!!

Returning to Hedgehog Hollow is always a rather special experience. Jessica Redland has built a whole community of wonderful characters whose stories interweave in a glorious tapestry to create this glorious series. This story picks up where the last book ended, as Sam and Josh have tied the knot before their extended families. The stories that have brought them to this point have been difficult, at times, but always uplifting.
This time, we follow the story of Lauren. Josh’s aunt and currently landlady to Sam’s dad. It’s a strange set of circumstances that seem perfect in the context of the book. Lauren finds that her job is in jeopardy and the solutions aren’t acceptable. What is a surprise, to both Lauren and the reader, is that she’s feeling attracted to another man despite the fact that her heart belongs to her first love, ex-husband Shaun. We then delve into the backstory of Lauren and how she has come to be single. As you may imagine, she’s not had a smooth path and I was genuinely gutted for her as the stories unfolded.
Presented with an opportunity to learn more about where her love life went wrong, Lauren explores the past. Of course, this is a Jessica Redland book so don’t try to guess what’s coming next, as you’ll enjoy it more if you just go with the flow.
Naturally, this book isn’t just about Lauren as we follow Sam and Josh on honeymoon. A simple mistake brings back some of Sam’s stress. She’s now much better equipped to deal with her panics, but she still tortures herself with questions and what if scenarios. Of course, she’s married Josh who is probably the kindest man around.
There are plenty more hedgehogs and surprises as a couple of family members turn over a new leaf. Each book in this series is better than the last. I’m not sure if it’s just because they each feel like I’m visiting old friends, but they are all truly special.
I enjoyed escaping to Hedgehog Hollow and adore Jessica Redland’s writing.

What a rollercoaster! I think this is the best book of the series. Completely unexpected storyline but thoroughly absorbing. Sensitively handled issues which were not made the focus of the book but part of the overall story and enabled the piecing together of the bigger picture. Less melodrama in this book which I appreciated. The whole story had a more steady feel which allowed the characters to develop. Always great to be back at Hedgehog Hollow. I laughed and I cried!

Lauren’s Story and Hedgehog Hollow’s Penultimate Novel

We find ourselves at Sam’s and Josh’s wedding, Lauren (Josh’s Aunt) thinking that day she may have feelings for her roommate - Sam’s Dad. After the wedding and during the reception she sees Johnathan and his estranged wife (Sam’s mom) share an intimate moment and sneak off to one of the rental cottages. Neither Johnathan nor Sam’s mother know that not only Lauren saw their kiss but so did Sam.

Lauren is surprised about the event, she heads back to her cottage and discusses with her twin sister Connie, it begins the story of why Lauren is in early 50’s and single.

Sam and Josh begin their safari honeymoon. Everyone back at Hedgehog Hollow volunteers and vets cover Josh’s practice and care for the hedgehogs. The honeymoon has a few surprises, and it brings on Sam’s anxiety and PTSD.

The novel bounces between Lauren (past and present) and Sam, the chapters alternating point of view from each of these 2 characters. Ms. Redland introduces the topic on LGBTQ+ and delicately describes coming of age and recognizing sexual orientation, gender orientation. It is interwoven into the novel and some of the characters, it provides a backdrop for more than one character, and both Lauren and Sammie gain better understanding of choices people make regarding their own identities and blending those characteristics into the characters.

Chloe returns and has accepted Sam’s advice and flourishes. -“News Flash” - Chloe has found herself and provides comfort and love - especially to Lauren and Sam.

Paul and his family are growing and his transplant has him gaining strength. Some of their story will bring tears.

We are introduced to a new character, Riley- who will be in the final book. He is written as a gent I personally would like to meet.

Sam and Lauren also acquire 2 new girlfriends to add to this wonderful menagerie of family.

Sam’s Mom and Dad try but realize they are no longer a fit. Sam’s Mom starts school, continues her counseling, (improving her relationship with Sam!) and starts a new project.

The book is bittersweet and some might be surprised or disappointed, I found myself stopping and putting the book down at times. I actually found myself thinking about it and when I continued, I felt that if real life that taking a break at times, would help process all that was happening. One thing about Sam’s character, Lauren’s also is that they both have the ability for unconditional love.

The final book of the series has me wondering about Sam’s Dad- Johnathan. He’s been there always supporting others but his story needs to be told and I will be disappointed if not. I will wait to see how the author completes this journey in Hedgehog Hollow.

I have enjoyed reading each one. I unlike some do not have a favorite because this is an epic journey. Enjoy the penultimate novel-I did.

Chasing Dreams at Hedgehog Hollow by Jessica Redland
MY REVIEW
This is the 5th book in the Hedgehog Hollow series, but can be easily read as a standalone. You also get a reminder of what’s happened so far, so it’s easy to catch up on where the story is up to.
Chasing Dreams at Hedgehog Hollow is predominantly Lauren’s story. We find out about her life from events in the present day and flashbacks from the past which tell her story. We begin at Samantha and Josh’s wedding. Lauren is Josh’s aunt and we see how some kind of romantic feelings seem to be developing between 51-year-old Lauren and Jonathan Wishaw (Sam’s dad) but of course, things aren’t as straight-forward as that…
We also follow Samantha, who is newly married to Josh. They go on their honeymoon to Tanzania and everything seems perfect as they even decide to consider having a baby. But will their life continue to be so perfect? Of course, you’ll have to read the book to find out!
I got into the story straight away. Jessica Redland has a wonderful knack of writing characters which pop off the page, so you relate to them and care about their lives. The settings are also great and Hedgehog Hollow is one of my all-time favourite settings. I mean, who wouldn’t want to read a book set in a hedgehog rescue centre? I loved Luna and her little hoglets this time too!
I love how Hedgehog Hollow is a centre for a lovely community network too and characters like Terry, who has been “adopted” as a grandad by Sam and Josh. There is a beautiful emphasis on family not having to be blood or family tree, but how friendship can become family.
I love the mix of old characters you already love and new ones to fall in love with. Here, we have Riley who looks like he could be a potential love interest for Lauren, but circumstances put them at odds with each other. As you expect from these novels, things don’t go according to plan. Our heroine isn’t going to find Mr Perfect straight away and move into a little white cottage with him in the first chapter. The “will they, won’t they?” element is really well done in the Hedgehog Hollow books, it all feels very realistic and not contrived or formulaic.
I also enjoyed Sam and Josh’s honeymoon to Tanzania and Zanzibar. It was great “seeing” their surroundings, especially the wildlife through their eyes and finding out more about the different types of hedgehog from other parts of the world. (Check out the African Pygmy Hedgehog on Google Images! So cute!)
As ever, this book is an absolute delight! I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll leave it there, but I’m definitely recommending it.

Easily my favorite feel-good series, this, the penultimate book in the #HedgehogHollow series, may just be the best of all.

With all the gang back, settling into this story (as is the case with this entire gorgeous series) is a familiar and comforting visit with dear friends, a journey into kindness, community and caring, broad enough to encompass injured animals, hurting humans, and any reader who craves a literary hug.

As Samantha and Josh settle into married life, jetting off to Tanzania to enjoy an absolutely dreamy honeymoon (who wouldn’t enjoy a wildlife safari with elephants! thatched bungalow on the beach! Snorkeling over coral reefs and swimming with turtles!), the story shifts gears to open a deep and intimate glimpse into one of the series most enigmatic characters thus far - Lauren, Josh’s smart, professional and always-supportive Auntie - who it turns out, perhaps unsurprisingly, has buried layers of pain so thickly entrenched they are cloaking her own need for healing and support.

As we travel back in time to learn Lauren’s oh-so-tragic backstory, with not one, but two failed marriages in her past - the first, quite likely the most poignant marriage break-up this reader has ever encountered between the pages - it’s impossible not to become lost in a world where dreams are shattered, so resoundingly and evocatively that it feels like one’s very own heart is breaking.

Without giving the plot away (no spoilers here), it should come as no surprise that, if you look hard enough, and in all the right places, it’s clear that solace and repair can be found for every trauma.

As broken dreams cluttering the past are replaced with possibilities, hope, and the shameless delight that comes with new love and new beginnings, I am so grateful every time I visit with these characters that such a world exists, and that this reader, for one, has had another chance to share in it.

A few well-placed hints, some doors that are opening - for Samantha, Josh, Lauren and the entire Hedgehog Hollow family and community, there appear to be changes approaching the horizon. I can’t wait to read the next, and final, book in this series.

A great big thank you to @raratours, the author, and the publisher for an ARC of this book. All thoughts presented are my own.

So we are back to Hedgehog Hollow, which is a rescue centre for hedgehogs, and we rejoin Sam who runs the centre after her wedding to Josh. They are happy and off on their honeymoon. It was lovely to see a snippet of the country they were visiting as well as flip back and forth back to their home.

This book mainly centres around Lauren and her storyline, she is Josh's aunt and twin sister to his mom Connie. Her story is one filled with absolute heartbreak, I was so emotional reading about everything that had happened to her throughout her life. The writing changed timelines so we were able to visit Lauren as she experienced the huge landmarks that shaped her life. She has never really got over her first love Shaun who left her in such an upsetting manner. She had never been given the chance to fully grieve the break up due to the way things ended. This had then impacted all her future relationships and decisions. It was heartbreaking to see the devastation she went through and how it had a knock on effect. However the friendship she has with Sam and Jonathan is a lifeline and you can see how important they are to her. Plus a new character Riley, enters the fray and has another huge impact on her life, although maybe not as you might expect to begun with! I thought the closure she receives was written beautifully and explained a lot about Shauns reasons behind what he did. Do read the acknowledgements at the end, Jesica explains a little about why she wrote the way she did and her research which is really interesting.

Old characters are still happily plodding on within the story and smaller storylines continue on from the previous books which is fabulous for consistency. We are still left with a few threads open which leads nicely to her final book that will be hitting shelves in September. I will be sad to leave the characters behind but I am also excited to see how everything ends up for each character in the final book of the series. Plus she has promised that we may well see them cropping up in other books in the future. This is another thing I love about Jessica Redlands books, because they are set around Whitsborough Bay, characters from different series pop up in other books when you least expect it!
