Teens will love this book. It has gouls , goblins, trolls, fairies, magic, good vs evil and battles for control of Uland, a hidden land that only can be reached through a secret portal up in the mountains. Tides be hi in to turn with the help of Brooke, Dale and Charlie, children from our world who got lost during a class hike. One of my favorite characters was Willow from Nymm and her special powers. There is lots of action and fantasy in this book that will interest many young readers.

The Soulburn Talisman by David McIlroy takes place in the magical world of Uland - a place that exists alongside ours. Full of monsters, magic, and creatures from classic fairy tales. Our guides in this new land are three thirteen-year-old school kids who accidentally get dragged into this new world and must navigate its perils in the hope of finding a way home again.
While Brooke Woods feels like the MS in this tale, we also have two of her classmates, Charlie, and Dale, who also provide focus as we follow along with their POV, giving a rounded insight into the journey of these new heroes. While the pacing is action-packed and always something new occurring, it often feels like a whirlwind of an adventure, but one you don’t want to put down. The people and creatures of Uland are unique and varied, plus the sprinkle of humour peppered throughout helps lighten some darker elements in this story.
Ultimately, this feels like the beginning of a great new series with wonderfully rounded characters and a new world to explore. The writing of McIlroy is fresh, and The Soulburn Talisman has the makings of a modern-day Narnia with hints of Neil Gaiman or Terry Pratchett’s young adult books. A balance of adventure, action, excitement, and friendship will make this a hit with any age group.

This was such a fun read for me. I loved every second. I wish this had been out when I was a teen it was jam-packed with adventure. saying that if you are a fantasy reader at heart, then it doesn't matter what age you are. This book is worth picking up.

The Soulburn Talisman is a book any avid reader could fall in love with! From the beginning the prologue, grabbed my attention. It’s starts off quite mysteriously by not providing a name for any of the characters or anything. Further combined with Brooke’s initial amnesia in the first chapter I was immediately intrigued.
Throughout the book, David continues to provide a certain level of intrigue and a bit of mysterious atmosphere. David wrote the story without giving away anything at the start, but that’s the whole point. I don’t want to guess the plot, I like it when the author hold his/hers/their cards extremely close to the chest. David certainly does that with story especially at the start. As the story develops, we’re given bits of information that helps things begin to fall into place there’s a real sense of excitement as it builds to more and more. The story contains plenty of humor, danger, and gasp worthy moments. It keeps you engaged and motivated to find out what happens next.
For me, the characters, yes all the characters were the best part. David created characters in Willow, Brooke, Dale and Charlie that ranged from funny, smart, unassuming to slightly awkward, insecure, and vulnerable though completely lovable. Exactly what you would expect from their ages. The secondary cast of characters, though not heavily featured, are just as exciting. You have all the mythical creatures/beings that you’ve ever wished for from Wee Folk to ghouls. While the antagonists are fantastic too, I enjoyed friendship and maturity that increases over time in what I consider the four main characters.
I think this quote from the book really puts the story and epilogue into perspective without being a spoiler: “As long as good endures in the world, evil will too. The scales can never tip completely one way. But that’s why the battle keeps going, and going. When evil stands, good rises to meet it.”
The new questions and revelations that come in the last two chapters and the epilogue left me anxiously awaiting an announcement for a second book.

This is a great YA Fantasy novel based on the common plot of children who are snatched from their normal lives and find themselves in a different, magical world where they must survive.
Action begins immediately, with horrendous fog monsters, claustrophobic tunnels, a beautiful sorceress and a mysterious voice that speaks into their minds. From this point, the main characters are rushed along a bewildering chase, with characters, setting and conflicts being revealed at a reasonable pace to keep our interest up.
The conflict continues at several different levels, and it’s a bit hard to keep track, especially of the officials and higher level magical beings, who don’t appear very often. But the continuity of the main characters keeps us up to date with what’s going on.
The personalities of the heroes are the strength of the writing. The children act in realistic and sympathetic ways to the fantastic events and earn our empathy and affection.
A minor point: the prologue seems too separate from the rest of the story. By the time the tale is finished, the reader has forgotten the questions created at the start. At that point, the short-term conflicts of this novel have been mostly solved, leaving the longer-term conflicts for future books in the series.
This is a wonderful Fantasy for pre-teen readers, or a read-aloud for younger children. There is a certain level of violence, so parental guidance would be appropriate.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters in this book felt so real, in a way that sometimes can be lost in fantasy series, especially young adult fantasy. Brooke initially annoyed me until I realised I could simply see a lot of my younger self within her. Charlie was my favourite character, with his thirteen year old-ness on display in such a charming way. Mcilory’s employment of fantasy characters and tropes felt somehow original in an oversaturated environment of young adult fantasy without being unrealistically so.
As a person from Northern Ireland myself, I could not help but notice the colloquial tells of an author from home, despite the fact that the novel is at no time based in NI. From the subtle hiberno english to the mention of potato bread as a casual breakfast food, it was clear that McIlory’s heart is always with home. Whether these things are intentional or just force of habit, it further immersed me in his writing and gave the story a familiar warmth that I appreciated- This further amplified after finding out in the acknowledgments that the Mournes were his muse for Uland.
My younger self would’ve ate this up and I’m immediately reaching for my kindle to read the sequel!

A great fantasy story for young readers.
If you love new worlds, magic, and good versus evil fantasy this is for you.
David has kicked off a new fantasy world with an epic story with some twist and turns along the way. A great read for younger readers, this will have a familiar feeling for fantasy lovers, as David forges his tale with both the known tropes of fantasy while trying some new things to keep you guessing.
A great start to a fantasy, my only criticism is that this book tries to build a lot and very quickly. Both in narrative and feeling - a lot of characters in a short time frame and a lot happening so it’s hard to be invested in characters and plot at points. That said, David has built a new world from scratch, one that younger audiences will want to revisit. Are we seeing a new Narnia? Time will tell.

I enjoyed this book very much. It was the perfect read for a relaxing weekend.
"The Soulburn Talisman" has everything I look for in a fantasy book, except for love (it was a tiny bit of it, but I suppose it will be more in the following volumes). It has magic and magical creatures like fairies, trolls, goblins and many others. Each chapter has a relevant title. It's written in the third person but focuses on one character at a time. The book didn't end on a cliffhanger, but it made clear the fact that the story is not over. I appreciate this in a series because it makes me curious for the next book, and it also allows me to continue with my life without feeling anxious.
I really liked this book and can't wait for the next one.

Thank you to the author for gifting me an ARC of this copy free of charge, but as always my reviews are my own and honest.
This book, while definitely enjoyable, is simply more suited for readers much younger than me, and therefore my rating lands somewhere in the middle. This was not, by any means, a bad book, and in fact much skilful writing has formed it. Unfortunately, there was some aspects that didn't come across as believable to me, which is ironic in a fantasy book, I realise. Funnily enough, I believe this could have been easily solved by either making this book slightly longer, or separating it into two parts, so that the action wouldn't feel condensed and we would have more time to understand the characters and their motivations.
Kudos to the author for writing a novel, for it is not an easy thing to do, and I cannot wait to see your writing grow and develop!

This YA fantasy really gave me all the feels that I had when I read The Chronicles of Narnia. David doesn't waste a minute with getting straight into the action of this story, and I was intrigued from the prologue and I never once felt like the story was dragging. The reader is thrown into this magical world with so many different creatures and fun characters. There are goblins, giants, fairies, magical woods people, and my favorite were the trolls! You get to go on this journey with these 3 teenagers and learn about this world with them as they try to get home but also learn things about themselves and friendship. The only criticism I have is that I wanted more. I want to know more about the creatures, and the world, and the different factions. The ending definitely left room for a next book! I hope there is more to come!

This is a good young adult fantasy that takes readers on a thrilling adventure. Brooke Woods and her classmates, Charlie and Dale, accidentally tumble into the magical world of Uland during a school trip. Filled with monsters, trolls, and mysterious magic, Uland is on the verge of war. Guided by brave allies like Willow and facing dangerous enemies like Commander Hysst, the trio embarks on a perilous journey to find their way home. Along the way, they learn about friendship, courage, and the blurred lines between good and evil. This book brings back the nostalgic charm of classic stories like The "Chronicles of Narnia" and is perfect for young readers who love fast-paced, magical adventures.

This was such a quick and fun read!
With “The Soulburn Talisman” we find ourselves in a world that is very unique and full of magic. It immerses us on an adventure and as we go through the pages, it also feels that we’re getting through the many obstacles that our characters do.
The only con that this book has is that some of the chapters were very long for me, however I was so invested on this story that I don’t even know if I can consider it a con since I read it in a couple of sittings!
If you’re a child at heart or if you enjoy YA fantasy books, you’ll love this one!
I would also like to thank the author for sharing this treasure with me and I hope there’s more to this three classmates as the ending made me wish for a second book!

nostalgic and entertaining
I enjoyed reading this book! It brought me back to middle school reading The Magic treehouse books and The Chronicles of Narnia.
This book is the perfect mixture of fantasy and suspense and leaves you wanting more with the ending! I can’t wait to read whatever is coming out next!!
For parents, this book is PERFECT for your children to read! It’s the perfect young adult book, no ‘spice’ and completely PG for all young adult readers. Will definitely be buying this book to add to my daughter’s bookshelf !

Perfect YA read for young readers! As an adult, it was a fun read and I knew I would’ve loved this when I was young. The writing is the perfect amount between explaining the scene, but not over explaining.

A thirteen year old , Brooke woods goes on a school trip to a mountain and there she gets lost in the fog. She is not the only one lost, two of her classmates Dale and Charlie are with her. They encounter fog monsters and are frightened, a woods person Willow arrives there and saves Dale and Brooke, but Charlie is carried away by the fog monsters.
Through Willow they get to know that they have stepped into a portal in the mountainside that led them to a parallel world. What happens to Charlie?? Will Dale , Charlie and Brooke be able to come back to the present world?? Who are the fog monsters?? Please do read and figure out.
This is a fun , easy read and magical book. The main characters are kids and it's so nice to see them travel and unravel the mystery. The book transported me to my childhood when I used to dream of all magical things . The author David Mcllory created a mystical atmosphere with different creatures and does a great job in luring the reader to the world he created.
Though am not a fan of fantasy this book changed my view. I thank David Mcllory for the ebook he gave me 3 weeks ago and my sincere Apologies for dropping the late review.

I was a beta reader for this book and I enjoyed the finished product even more the second time around!! The world building is so impressive and the detailed descriptions throughout the story really add to the whole experience, definitely recommend!

Any book that starts with a map has my full attention. If a world has been penned to life and can be visualised on the page in map form, I know I am in for a treat.
This book did not disappoint. The three main characters, teenagers Brooke, Dale and Charlie, are likeable and realistic. The parallel world they stumble into is beautifully described, with a menagerie of magical creatures and characters both helpful and menacing. The pace and adventure kept me hooked. If you love fantasy and want something new to feast your imagination on, read this!

The prologue, refusing to name anyone or anything, combined with Brooke’s momentary amnesia in the first chapter does strain the reader. There’s certainly intrigue and atmosphere but at the cost of having little to latch onto. It does find its feet but continues to hold its cards extremely close to its chest for some time. Too long with Willow. Once we do get to know some characters this is to its benefit too. As the pieces begin to fall into place there’s a real sense of excitement as it builds to more and more revelations.
The Soulburn Talisman isn’t a difficult book to love. Brooke, Dale and Charlie are fantastic. They’ve a cheekiness that I remember but don’t always get to see in characters of that age. There was an especially interesting instance of doubt for one of them. Following them as they went from stumbling through the world was a joy. But I can’t lie. The secondary cast of characters are an utter delight from the Wee Folk to the Robin Hood-esque trolls. There’s a humour to the world that really shines through them. And the antagonists are fantastic too. There’s a good, persistent sense of threat and danger throughout. They live up to it too. There were several reveals that made me gasp aloud.
McIlroy threads between familiar and fresh very well. I love the inclusion of perytons – a fantastically chimerical creature. I love the Stone Road. I wanted to know more about every element of Uland. But the book largely balances itself well outside of its initial mysteries so I didn’t feel unsatisfied or that there needed to be more. Even if I would have personally loved some more time with certain denizens. There’s a grandeur to some of the history in the way of Fort Hammerfall but there’s an immediacy to it that I enjoyed too – the wane of gigantism – which you could see.
I loved the momentum of the book – especially once all the pieces were in place. It could be wonderfully propulsive too. Unfortunately my pet peeve of foreignness only being brought up in association with villainy cropped its head up. If I were to be strict in my criticism I would say that the book seems to shy from more serious moments swiftly moving on with characters who are ostentsibly feeling deeply being jolly and winking. However it’s been so long since I’ve had so much fun with a book, and the prospect of returning, especially with what we learn, and those stunning final chapters, is thrilling.

The Soulburn Talisman isn’t a difficult book to love. Brooke, Dale and Charlie are fantastic. They’ve a cheekiness that I remember but don’t always get to see in characters of that age. There was an especially interesting instance of doubt for one of them. Following them as they went from stumbling through the world was a joy. But I can’t lie. I thought this was a really fun and refreshing read! This is a teen fantasy book that I think I would have been totally obsessed with as a kid.
I found the plot interesting and the characters relatable and well developed. I would be interested in reading more from this author and would totally recommend this to any teens out there looking for their next fantasy read. I also think this is a refreshing read for adults as well.

For anyone looking to pick up a fun, easy-to-read, and magical book, The Soulburn Talisman is perfect. The main characters are all such charming kids, and the mystery behind their adventures is enjoyable to unravel. The inclusion of various abnormal creatures adds to the mystical atmosphere David Mcllroy presents, and he does a good job easing the reader into the world he’s created without making it overwhelming or difficult to understand. There are some interesting politics between the characters revealed in the later half of the novel that further expand on the world.
The only parts that lost me were in the beginning—where I felt too much information was withheld, to the point I became slightly disinterested in the characters—and a few spots around the middle, where I wished the main kids had a tiny bit more substance to them (backstory, being less passive, bonding with each other more effectively, etc.). Though I think by the end of the book, I was familiar enough with them that their personalities outshined any shallowness I felt. I also wish there was a bit of a deeper dive into how their experiences changed them in their original world, and how they dealt with all they’d seen. But maybe that will be explored further in another book.
Overall, I would definitely give it a try, and I think people of all ages can appreciate the story David Mcllroy has pieced together. I was entertained all the way through, and I’m excited to see what the future holds. I’m very thankful for my opportunity to immerse myself in this story!

Have you ever enjoyed a book so much it was hard to talk about why you enjoyed it? This is a problem that I am having with "The Soulburn Talisman." First, I found the children in this story to be a breath of fresh air. The trolls were my favorite side characters, and I truly enjoyed their banter and humor as they roamed through this perilous land. Many times in middle grade books, the villain is the most villainous caricature of a villain possible. This was not the case in this book. The villain carried a deep resemblance to highly ambitious people, which cast him more realistically than a Doctor Evil type villain petting a cat.
I would have loved this book as a kid, as I was deeply interested in portal magic and convinced that there was a hidden world running parallel to ours. Aside from mild, 13-year-old kid attempts at swearing, which only happened sparingly, this book is so impeccably clean and could be the perfect addition to a summer reading list. The themes of friendship, trust, and perseverance are woven seamlessly into the narrative, providing valuable lessons for young readers.
Overall, "The Soulburn Talisman" is a delightful and engaging read that captures the imagination and keeps you hooked from start to finish. I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. The characters are Brooke, Dale & Charlie; aged 13, & Willow, a Woodsgirl - the author's version of an elven druid?
However, it was a good story, engaging, well paced & a slight twist at the end that does set up Book 2 rather nicely.
I am not its target audience (thinking this is for the 13+ market?) But its still a good first introduction to fantasy for younger readers. Clean read, no spice!

Fun adventure for YA and even adult readers – a bit Witcher meets Lord of the Rings meets The Chronicles of Narnia, etc. Fun twists and turns at the end that set it up for a sequel. Overall, the second half is stronger than the first but it's a fun, quick read. I was gifted an ARC copy but also bought a Kindle copy to support the author who I found via Substack.

This is a fantastic YA fantasy. It's fast paced and has all of your favourite fantasy elements. The characters are likeable and the world is expansive and interesting.
Younger readers will love the fast paced, action filled nature of the book and adults can enjoy something which still has all the best classic fantasy elements without being dragged down by too much politics or darkness, the perfect pallet cleanser.

Accessible and enjoyable fantasy with a great message about friendship…
The Soulburn Talisman is an enjoyable fantasy story that follows three classmates who find themselves stumbling through a portal to another world. Their journey of discovery brings them face to face with a plethora of trials, characters and all the hallmarks of an original fantasy setting world known as ‘Uland’. On their path they meet magical woods people, fairies, trolls, bandits and even knights as the three all come to realise in this world, they have powers which showcases eventual character development alongside a fun story that is easy to read. While they may not start out as friends, the journey they face together brings them closer.
‘As they left the mountain, Brooke finally understood what the feeling was inside her. It was one she’d known before, but it had never been as strong or as pure as it was now. She smiled all the way down, savouring it, enjoying its warmth. The surety of friendship.’
As someone who doesn’t read enough of this genre, I very much enjoyed the pace and accessible writing style this book has been written in. Sometimes fantasy can be a time investment alongside a weighty amount of definitions, names and setting that takes readers away from the story but David McIlroy delivers this book well and all of those things while keeping the flow and pages turning. This would make a perfect read for someone looking to take the plunge into fantasy for the first time and even those who are a little younger.
For readers looking to take on an original fantasy world with spooky woods, magic, castles, knights and some great description, this is the read for you!

General Description: A school trip goes horribly wrong when Brooke, Charlie, and Dale find themselves through a portal and in the land of Uland. However, they don't all arrive together. Brooke and Dale get the help of a woodsperson named Willow, while Charlie finds himself among some trolls. Brooke and Dale have a time limit on their mission with Willow in order to make sure the land of Uland doesn't fall into complete chaos. Oh, and they must find Charlie. Can they accomplish it all?
The good:
- This gave me Pendragon vibes in the absolutely best way (if you know you know)
- This was extremely fast paced.
- I absolutely loved the world building and travelling you see in this book.
- I thought the creatures were unique and fun to see how they interacted with humans.
The loss of a star:
- I feel like the action overwhelmed the worldbuilding in the beginning. I just wanted a bit more worldbuilding in the beginning.
Overall, if you're a fan of the Pendragon series, you need to pick it up!

I think 13 year old Jess would have obsessed about this book, but 33 year old Jess highly enjoyed it as well. If you love epic fantasy adventures with magical creatures, action packed scenes, clever heroes and beautiful world building, this is the book for you.
