A failed spell caster.

Layla Rosen’s one purpose is to summon a demon familiar and become a spell caster—a powerful witch able to stand between the modern world of non-magical humans and the vicious creatures known as angels.

But when her summoning circle fails, she is left without a weapon at the worst possible time. The angels are stirring, tipping the balance of power in a war older than history.

With enemies closing in, Layla must find a way to fix her broken magic and put her life back together. She definitely doesn’t have time for this growing attraction to her childhood best friend—someone she’s forbidden to get involved with.

An outcast warrior.

Costi Blackthorn is the only known survivor of a deadly attack he can’t remember. Deemed too violent for peaceful witch society, he’s an outcast.

He’s always looked out for Layla, who gave him her unconditional friendship. Now grown, he leashes his rebellious nature to become a guardian—the only way he can protect her. Becoming anything else to her is out of the question. He’d lose everything he’s worked for, and Layla would be left undefended.

But when angels attack, forcing Costi and Layla to flee, his priority is made clear—

It’s Layla. At any cost.

The Inperium War has begun anew—but is it already too late for humanity?

The Spell Caster is the first book in a new spellbinding paranormal romance series set in a hidden society in the modern world.

This is a fast-paced, witchy read with a unique twist on angels, demons, and spell casters. Layla, the main character, grows into a confident spell caster throughout the story. I loved how relatable and strong she was. Costi, her Guardian, is always there to protect her, and their slow-burn romance added a nice touch.

The world-building was well done, with detailed descriptions of witchcraft and magic. The plot was filled with war, politics, and an unexpected twist that left me gasping. The writing style made for an easy and enjoyable read. I look forward to seeing what else comes from this series!

Thank you Tamsin for providing me with a review copy! All opinions are my own and unbiased. 🖤

General: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🫦

✨✨✨ The Spell Caster by Tamsin Hawthorn (@authortamsinhawthorn) is the first book in her Spell Caster’s Familiar trilogy.

Dedication:
For you, the one who believes in hope in the face of impossible odds.

Tropes:
🌙 Witches, angels, demons
✨ Smoldering slow burn
🌙 Epic conflict spanning several series
✨ Best friends to lovers
🌙 It’s forbidden
✨ Are they fated?
🌙 He fell first, and he fell hard
✨ You better keep your hands off her
🌙 Found family

I’m both happy and sad at the same time—happy that I finally had the chance to read this wonderful debut, but sad that I didn’t read it sooner.

Tamsin introduces us to the story of Layla and Costi, who live within witch circles, hidden from the human world. They’ve known each other since childhood, growing up together. It feels as though fate keeps bringing them back together, even as others try to sabotage their connection. The witches' world is thrown into chaos when angels decide to attack the circles, and nothing is as it should be.

The chemistry between Layla and Costi is undeniable, but they’re forbidden to be together—Layla is a spell caster, and Costi is a guardian.

I couldn’t put the book down. Tamsin had me hooked from the very first chapter, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book!

Quotes:

I tucked my hot face under his chin, not daring to look at him. This was very different from when I slept next to him when he was injured. My body lit with breathless energy, but I was held motionless, intoxicated. I was treasured. Safe. I can’t have you, he had said. But I don’t think I can live without you.

“I don’t need to tell you what a bad idea that is. They’re not happy with you.” “Got a lot of bad ideas when it comes to you.” He gave me a faint smile. “You could have a little self-preservation,” I said, poking him in the side. “Where’s the fun in that?”

I loved this spell caster fantasy!!! We follow a spell caster whose magic isn’t exactly normal. While everyone else requires a familiar to cast Layla doesn’t…. Or so she thinks. The Angels are attacking and Laylas powerful magic could change everything. She is forced to unlock secrets and keep some of her own to become the woman she was destined to be.
Be warned…. The cliff hanger is a doozie!!!! I cannot wait to continue this series!!!!!

I loved the concept of this book. Witchcraft, demons, evil angels and suspicious councils 👀

It was fast paced, had multiple POVs and the plot twist near the end was WILD. It totally caught me off guard and was possibly my favourite part of the book.

At first I had trouble getting into the book, the writing style was a bit too matter-of-fact, and not as descriptive as I was expecting. That being said, it made for an easy read- and with under 250 pages, it was one of the shortest fantasy books I've encountered.

The power dynamic between guardians and spell casters reminded me of Vampire Academy. The way Rose would protect Vasilisa, but replace Rose with Four from Divergent 🔥😏 For some reason I was picturing Costi as Theo James, and even more unhinged, I was imagining Calamus as Cormac McLaggen (well Freddie Storma in the HP movies). I can’t explain why, neither of them are described to look like either of those men 😂😅

This story is just getting started, so I'm intrigued to see where it will go 👀

Thank you Tamsin for sharing this ARC with me!

I was lucky to get an ARC from Tamsin Hawthorn, a kind and lovely debut author. Let me tell you, I had so much fun with this story. I honestly cannot wait for book 2!

What do you get from this story?
Paranormal romance, slow burn/tension-building dynamic, forbidden love, and a little bit of found family.

The characters
This is a two-point-of-view story. You start with a young witch named Layla. When we meet her, she has one final step before taking on the full role of Spellcaster: summoning her demon familiar. As an FMC, she has the characteristics of someone finishing school you would expect—she needs to build confidence, distrusts where she fits and feels guilty about not meeting expectations.

The second point of view is from the perspective of an outcast warrior and Layla’s longtime friend, Costi. As male characters go, Costi is what many of us like in these stories. He is rough around the edges, overly protective of Layla, and smarter than he seems.

The plot
The story begins when they have not been together for a while, and through their reconnecting, you quickly pick up on the ranks of witches and the ongoing battle they’ve had with their enemies, the Angels. I liked this interesting flip, where witches are typically considered evil, and angels are good. But here, Angels are the predators trying to be the higher race. Very quickly in the story, Layla and Costi are thrown into the deep end of this battle, and everything that was somewhat peaceful is no longer.

I enjoy these types of stories because, through this catalyst moment, you learn that not everything is what it seems, and you get to uncover the history of this world and its people along with the main characters. Plus, this story provides some lovely tension between Layla and Costi, which grows as they are pushed into a new community with new rules. We all love slow-burn tension.

Number one thing I loved
The story will have some predictability, as there usually is if you’ve read enough fantasy or romantasy. Often, these stories rely heavily on miscommunication. I do not mind a little of this as it is sometimes needed, but it can usually be overdone and frustrating! Hawthorn had so many opportunities to go down that path, and she didn’t. It was an essential part of the Layla and Costi relationship, and I was so pleased that the tension built in the book wasn’t because of this but because the characters were in the right place for themselves.

Where I would have improved
Banter can often be necessary, but the dialogue fell flat in some scenes. Not to the point where I was mad at it, but to the point where I wanted to see the strength in the back-and-forth as arguments happened, discoveries were made, or frustrations came to the surface.

When would I recommend this read?
It would be best to read this when you are looking for an easy read that lets you jump into the story right away, when you are interested in reading about a new magic system with societal hierarchy, or when you are seeking the same vibes as City of Bones.

The Spell Caster is the author's debut novel, and it's a paranormal romantasy with an intriguing concept. In this version of our world, witches live in hidden "Circles" in different locations and their role is to defend humanity from the threat of angels, seemingly mindless creatures prone to destruction. The protagonist, Layla, is a spellcaster, the highest order of Witches that is supposed to lead the fight against angels. However, she can't seem to summon her demon familiar, which keeps her from fighting... and it's the worst possible moment to be powerless, with angels stirring and attacking more than ever!
Flanked by Costi - her best friend, but also an outcast she's supposed to stay away from - Layla is flung into a chain of events that leads to unexpected discoveries, dangerous encounters and forbidden feelings. (Full blurb in my pinned comment)

... Guys, the PLOT TWIST in this book!! It's been a while since a revelation blew me away this much 🤯

It took me some time to actually feel invested in the story, as I found that too much focus was on the forbidden feelings / developing romance (although, I have to say, this was written really well and all emotions felt quite tangible!), rather than on the really interesting plot and concept of this witchy society pledged to protect humanity from angels. I wanted more of the plot and a bit less of the feelings, given all that was going on... but wow, when the plot-twist hit, it really HIT! The last third of the book was fantastic and had me absolutely glued to the pages.

What to expect?
✨️ unique magic system
🔥 witches VS angels
❤️ forbidden love
🖤 demon familiars
📚 first book in a series

I'd recommend this to anyone who loves interesting alternative realities, witches and paranormal romance, and who doesn't mind a story that's a bit slow to take off, but then pays off! It's a quick read and definitely worth it. I'll be looking out for the sequel when it's announced! Thanks to the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Spell Caster by Tamsin Hawthorn
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I absolutely LOVED this book. I was quickly brought into the world of spell casters, guardians, witches, demons, and angels. Enter Layla, a newly graduated spell caster who can’t summon her familiar which she needs in order to cast and her best friend since childhood Costi, who is a guardian protector and hopeful to be Layla’s protector. When an attack arrives from the angels Layla happens to cast the largest spell seen by many and her and Costi are able to escape. Covens everywhere are being attacked and all those homeless come to the Mountain Circle for protection. But soon after arriving, Layla and Costi feel that something may be wrong about this place.

I really loved the playful and steamy banter between Layla and Costi and I might have a new man crush 😍 I was unable to put this book down and flew through it being sideswiped at the end with a huge surprise and cliffhanger (should I even be surprised about that? Ha). Did I mention these best friends have barely restrained feelings and tension for each other?!! Did I also mention that spell casters and guardians are banned from having relationships??!!

Bring on book 2!!! And yes I’m starting book 2 right NOW! Haha 😂 Book 2 releases at the end of the month so get your hands on The Spell Caster now so you can jump right into The Demon Familiar!

What a twist on this one! I loved that it was compelling, fast paced, and riveting. I was entranced in the story the whole time. I love Costi and Layla’s relationship— they’re just friends but only because they’re not allowed to be more. They very much have feelings for each other, and Costi protects his little witch however he can since he’s a Guardian.
Spell casters are supposed to be able to summon a demon who act as a familiar and that’s how they are able to cast spells. However, Layla’s isn’t appearing no matter how many times she does the summoning spell. When the angels attack (angels are bad in this story— think kind of like Van Helsing where they’re just sweeping in and attacking from the sky), Layla unleashes a powerful spell that vanquishes many of them at once.
Given that she doesn’t have a demon, this makes her an anomaly as they try to figure out how she was able to do it. Get ready for a slow burn but high tension, a guy who really wants her but he sucks, a nasty mother, and an ending that leaves you knowing the stakes will be higher in the next book.

Thank you R&R for having me on the tour!

Tamsin Hawthorn's debut novel The Spell Caster is your next new favorite witchy read!

Layla, a failed spell caster, and her childhood best friend, Costi, who is a guardian, must make sense of what is going on in their society. The angels are growing smarter, and people seem to be keeping secrets, big secrets.

When angels attack, Layla and Costi are the first line of defense to save their home. But what happens next causes more questions and more tension....exactly what they DONT need when their world is on the brink of war.

If you like:
✨️ paranormal romances
✨️ forbidden feelings
✨️ slow burn
✨️ demon familiars, witches, and angels
✨️ a very protective MMC
✨️ all in a secret witch society....

Then make sure you grab your copy of The Spell Caster, which releases on 8.01!

I was graciously given a copy to read before it comes out, and I can't thank Tamsin enough for this opportunity! 🖤

To sum it up, this was a short and easy read! Quite enjoyable most of the time. The plot is what kept me interested. Unfortunately the characters were all pretty bland imo and the world building was a bit lacking. I personally didn’t like the writing all that much, it was a bit simplistic for me. However, the story, mythology and witchcraft aspects were nicely written and detailed, and I do see the potential in this story.

All in all, I think this is a good YA debut novel that anyone who’s interested it paranormal/witchy stuff would appreciate. Unfortunately I don’t feel invested enough in the characters or the story to continue this series.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy to review, I appreciate it a lot!

What a cracking debut fantasy from Tamsin Hawthorn. I have never read anything remotely similar to this it was incredibly original and had you wanting more and more

Layla is a spellcaster with one big problem. She can not summon her demon familiar to aid in the war against the angels who are destroying witch covens in targeted attacks.....after accidentally saving her coven with her best friend Costi they are thrust into a new coven where nothing is as it seems...

This book is full of an intricate plot and world building and incredible magic system. Intriuge, politics, betrayal, and a slow burn simmer of spice. The twists, turns, and revelations of the story will catch you so quick and then...a cliffhanger and it was PERFECT

3,5 stars.

This one was a hard one for me. I liked the beginnings of the worldbuilding but I got the feeling it wasn't finished. The characters were, apart from Layla and Costi, all not likeable and not really fleshed out. It was a lot of telling instead of showing. The story was original though and some twists were really fun.
I did like the bones of the story and I hope the author will continue on them because then book 2 can be really something else!

*Arc Review* This book is amazing!!! It's a very unique story! It definitely sucked me in and kept me hooked. Constantine (Costi), my favorite, he is just so perfect! Layla is such a great character! Don't want to give anything away but she is far from the failure she believes herself to be! Angels are the bad guys and demons are good?! Yes! I need more ASAP!! I feel like there is so much more going on beneath the surface and I can't wait to find out!!! Tamsin gimmmee book 2!!! 😘💚👏

This is an AMAZING debut 😍😍 I flew through this book!! The main characters were well developed, and Layla is the sweetest 💗

And Costi?!? If you are in the market for a new book boyfriend, he's the guy for you 😍😏 Sexy, protective, and possessive? Yes please! I love a good "touch her ☠️☠️" moment, and there's no shortage of those here!

While I did find it a bit predicable, this book has allllll the tension and I LOVE IT!! Immediately diving into book 2!

What a fun read!!!

I thought this was an amazing debut novel, and I absolutely loved the idea of the witches living hidden just out of different USA states. What really drew me in was the magic system, and that spell castors summon their own tiny demon from hell who helps them.

I liked Laylas character and really felt for her in navigating the circles(witch society), her mother's and everyone's expectations of her as a spell castor.

I'm looking forward to seeing where the relationships go in the next book and only thing I wish was touched on a bit more Waa the world building. I just needed a lil bit more to really get like where and what was happening.

VERY excited for the next book 😍😍

Thank you to Tamsin Hawthorn for an ARC of The Spell Caster!

This book gave me such a huge book hangover, and I mean that in the very best way possible. I inhaled this book!

I haven't read a paranormal romance in such a long time, so this was a fantastic book to get me back into the genre. I really loved the world building, and the descriptions of the hidden witch communities and covens.

Layla and Costi were perfection, and I loved how their relationship developed. I really want to see Layla develop her confidence more, and I feel like these two characters have some serious potential to wreak chaos in the next book.

Speaking of the next book... Is it out yet?! Because after that ending, I desperately need it!

1.5 out of 5 stars. It’s perhaps my shortest read ever and I’m sorry to say, I’m glad it ends quickly…

The whole concept itself is very intriguing, about witchcraft, familiar (something like bonded creatures, a power source for witches to cast), guardians, angels being some sort of monsters…all sounds promising so I was having high hopes for the book. I feel like the author is still too green in writing, that the world she’s trying to construct is too simple and flat. Along with the matter-of-facts writing style, everything feels very one-dimensional. There’re lots of popular tropes and elements, like magic, bonding pairs, covens, and etc., but all merely serve as a backdrop instead of really contributing to any parts of the plots. There isn’t an organised approach to the world building, information just comes by randomly, bit by bit.

*SPOILERS ALERT*

I had a hard time understanding characters’ motives and motivations too. All of them are just…so plain and boring. There isn’t much building arcs for each characters as well. So I cannot form much connections with the characters. Layla is really a weak crying baby that she never really attempts to do anything on her own. And the romance is without any substance, like I cannot see why our FMC and MMC are in love. Apart from them being childhood friends, their exchanges are pretty monotonous and distant, and there’s not much development or growth in their relationships. I also don’t understand why witches, especially spell casters, tend to treat every being, including familiars, guardians, and angels as non-sentient. Very condescending. Spell casters are rare, and they are warriors to fight off angels, and they need the support from their familiars and guardians. Yet the people show little respect for any of them, downplaying them as some kind of punchbags instead of companions. I also wonder why some witches, would be marked as the Troubled, and why they are banned from mingling with the spell casters. The saying about them diluting the gene pool is quite ridiculous and weak, so I wonder if there’s any practical problems with their fraternisation at all.

I do like the twists at the end, about Cortis being Layla’s familiar all along. Yet a few interesting concepts don’t seem to be enough for me to go on:’(

This could have been really good, but it the end this book didn’t seem to be written for me. And that’s okay! Potential spoilers.

This reads firmly in the realm of teen/early YA and those of a younger age for a few reasons. The cast is here with a hot brooding love interest and awkward yet somehow obscenely powerful MC, pining over each other relentlessly.

The central drama between characters is ‘society won’t let us be together’ in a way that anyone older would roll their eyes at and see it for the ultimately unenforceable melodrama that it is. It works great for teens who think their family and community’s approval is all that’s important in the world. The book kept hinting at a ‘well screw them” mentality development, but they never got past this blockage before the book ended.

These characters swear they can’t live without each other, but there isn’t romance - at most, there’s pining. There was a whole book for something to happen, but 250 pages ended up not being long enough for even a kiss. Can you tell I found this a bit frustrating?

The MC is constantly flushing, acting shy, downplaying herself, noting how awkward she is, and worrying what other people think of her. That’s okay, she’s young. But there isn’t a lot of growth to be shown by the end even though she has shown herself to be crazy powerful.

She never even tries to train her spellcasting because her familiar won’t appear - ignoring the fact that it didn’t seem to appear the first time either. Wouldn’t you at least try? Instead, she calls herself useless and broken. That aspect was also quite frustrating.

The ‘twists’ are things you see coming early in the book. That’s okay! Sometimes you keep reading to see how the characters will react to the twists finally being revealed, but the book ends very shortly after on a very undramatic note of ‘to be continued’.

The romance, supernatural aspects, and politics all have an enormous potential to ramp up in the next book. I hope - and I’m sure - it will! But this book doesn’t quite feel standalone (could have used 50-100 more pages) and I wouldn’t have read it yet knowing how it ends without being able to jump into the second book. A like not a love!

Hear me out—wait patiently for August 1st and get your copy of The Spell Caster by Tamsin Hawthorn! Why, you may ask? Well, let me tell you...

If you love stories about witches, societal hierarchy and fighting against it, deconstructing pre-learned myths and history, intrigues & plot twists, and beings from other worlds—you will love The Spell Caster.

Is there a love subplot? There is, and it is absolutely perfect. It has the slowest of slow-burns, but it is so worth it. The friendship and the love growing between the two main characters are so pure and beautiful to witness throughout the book.

Layla, who seems to be a failed spell caster, someone who hasn't been able to summon her familiar (a demon from Hell), has lived a rather sheltered life, controlled by her ambitious mother. But there is more to Layla; she tries to escape the shackles of a pre-defined life and manages to find people who are the family she needs. Costi, the MMC, is one of them. Costi quickly became one of my favourite fantasy MMCs due to his unwavering devotion, loyalty, and love for Layla. He was always meant to become Layla's guardian, making any feelings between them forbidden. Even if forbidden, their growing feelings couldn't be tamed as much as they tried to.

And then that twist at the end... I was gasping! I didn't see that one coming! It's a twist that will leave you on the edge of your seat, I promise.

With all the mysteries and secrets still surrounding them, I can't wait to see where the next book will take us! I was so happy to be Tamsin's ARC reader, and I hope you will love this book as much as I did!

In short, The Spell Caster will gift you
- witches, demon familiars, and angels
- fantasy world set in modern times
- societal hierarchy and fighting against it
- secrets, intrigues & plot twists
- forbidden love
- slow-burn romance
- protective MMC
- FMC learning her worth
and so much more!
