Bloodwoven is an emotional journey, full of action, deep character building, and philosophical questions. The magic system is fascinating and the world is full of surprises. We follow Lin, a Furrucium Escorter, who has been tasked with guarding Margaret and Aemun, a couple who are expecting their first child. Within the first few chapters, this mission goes to hell, and Lin finds himself traveling with Tylle, a woman who may or may not be a murderer and definitely just turned Lin into a monster with her magic. What follows is a fast-paced sword and sorcery adventure! And it’s a hell of a lot of fun.

Bloodwoven by G.J. Terral

Characters:

Lin: A good main character. He’s the sole POV and he has enough internal and external conflict going on to keep him intriguing throughout the entire novel. I always like a character who struggles with self-doubt, anxiety, and fear, and Lin is that character. Terral did a fantastic job of showing Lin’s emotional side without turning him into a character who just whines. Lin has a great relationship with the baby in the story, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of them together in later books. I love Lin’s interactions with Tylle as well. I ship it.

Tylle: Another fantastic character. She is the yin to Lin’s yang and they have an awesome partnership, considering how much they dislike each other at the beginning. Tylle shows a real kindness when she saves Lin at the beginning of the book even when he’s convinced she’s a murderer who needs to be executed. To repeat: I ship it.

Aemun: The bad guy. For the entire book. I just wanted someone to punch his stupid face. There were times when I feltl like he could have had a bit more to him. He’s evil and killed his lover/the mother of his child, but he doesn’t spend very much time struggling with the fact that he did horrible things for what he believes in. He’s just kind of a jerk. And I get it. Every story needs a villain.

Worldbuilding/Magic System:

Very cool magic system. The Furrucium has set forth rules outlawing stitches. If you use stitches, you not only become persona non grata to the Furrucium, but you become untethered. The Untethered are the stuff of nightmares: not so much people anymore as monsters.

I think my favorite part about this whole tethered/untethered conflict is that Tylle used stitches and yet has not become a monster. She stitches Lin and he does not immediately become a monster, though he worries that will be the case in the future. I like the gray area here. It’s not just tethered=good, untethered=bad. People are good and bad, and their tetheredness isn’t the only factor.

Story:

Great opening, and a very solid first act. The misguided and possibly evil nature of the Furrucium was obvious from the beginning, but Lin doesn’t know, which gives us some excellent dramatic irony. I found some parts in the middle a little slow at times: quite a bit of travel. I also questioned the decision making of some of the characters not named Lin and Tylle. However, even though those minor qualms, I was hooked. The Noosemen are creepy and something that will haunt my dreams. And the untethered? Even more so. I actually felt like we could have gotten more untethered goodness in the novel, and I’m hoping for more in later books.

Writing: Well-written! Terral does well with emotional characters and has a good ear for description. He’s one to watch!

Overall: If you’re looking for under the radar fantasy books, this is one to check out! I enjoyed my time with Lin and Tylle, and I’m excited to see what else this series has in store for us! Highly recommended!

A soldier of duty & honour will struggle with beliefs following a heinous murder. Clarity muddied as deadly creatures & dangerous factions surround.

Quick read but packs an emotional punch. Unsettling setting, even worse adversaries & one incredibly vile foe. Great debut!

A great story spun with love

I really loved this book, from start to finish.

It's a tale spun on two major threads, what a man does when faced with the fact that the story he knows is a lie and what he is is built on betrayal. The other thread is the story of what that man is capable of doing to find himself again.

This book was such a pleasant surprise in the way it is written, from a single POV that drives forward the entirety of the story.

The magic system is one of its most salient points. I really loved how unique it felt and the story behind it promises a lot more surprises to come.

The worldbuilding is superbly done, and the characters are compelling to the point I am left with many questions about what's to come.

I'm definitively reading the following book!

Bloodwoven by G.J. Terral is way more about the characters and world than it is about the plot.

For a quick read, the world building is quite deep and intriguing, and I was easily drawn in, exploring ever more.

The characters felt well rounded, and all have flaws as well as strengths. The book pivots around a man who was tasked to guard a couple, but when one of them is murdered, he is torn between two possible murderers. And because this isn't hard enough, the woman who he is meant to despise for being a kind of heretic, using magic in the wrong way, is kinda making sense... So it's a battle between his upbringing and indoctrination, against a truth that might be utterly different.
This inner conflict was portrayed very well, but I personally would have liked a bit more actual plot to pad it all up around the edges.

Tye fight scenes and world building were interesting and well written, and the voice catchy enough to easily hook me, it just missed a little something to make it a favourite read.

Bloodwoven is a fun debut from G.J. Terral that blends plenty of action with a thoughtful world and magic system. The standout area for me, though, is Terral's character work. Lin is a great MC and you really get to know him as the book progresses. Tylle is great and I even messaged G.J. when a specific scene of hers happened (won't spoil it). Perhaps the best character, in terms of evoking emotion, is Aemun-he's a straight up asshole who I actively rooted against the entire book.

While I found pacing to sometimes be hit or miss, overall this was a great read. Terral did a great job of balancing a book one story and building for the future, I'll definitely be continuing the series. For those who like to wait for a series to be completed, book three in The Binding Tenets Trilogy, Bloodless, will be released on May 9, 2025.

Exceptional!
This is a reread for me, but this time by audiobook and it was incredible to hear this story come to life with Simon Alison narrating. What a perfect choice!
The author weaves such an emotional tale and Simon captured every nuance.
If you haven't read Lin's story, you're missing out on a descriptive tale, a super cool world and magic system, characters that will both surprise and incense you, and an ending that will make you immediately want to start book 2.

Read as part of SPFBO10.

If I wrote a book, and it was my debut, and my name was G.J. Terral…. Well, then, I would be pretty darn proud. There are a lot of elements in Bloodwoven that appeal to a fantasy reader and personally, I enjoyed how the story as a whole held on firmly to the main character’s internal conflict.

It’s actually quite simple, what Bloodwoven is about. It’s about a soldier who suddenly finds one of his wards murdered, with the alleged murderer in his grasp. His task would be to deliver the alleged murderer to face justice. However, and this is where things get complicated pretty fast, should you always simply trust what your eyes see and what your superior tells you, or should you trust your gut and nagging feeling?

All is not as it seems, and Terral takes Bloodwoven to epic heights with some morally hardhitting questions. Whilst the characters debate over their beliefs, faith, and try to separate the right from wrong, there is no shortage of adventure, action and danger. The morally weighty questions we face throughout the book are just the thing for added depth.

Additionally, what makes this bookish treat stand slightly taller and straighter, is the magic system described. It’s a nice treat for any fantasy reader and in this case, not only does it come with some cool visuals, it delivers one of the biggest conflicts for our main character Lindel.

Yes, I did find the start a bit rocky, that’s likely on me, finding myself in a new world with new characters and what have you. But, the further along the story I got, the easier it went. Do I believe there’s room to improve? Sure. I think Terral’s writing and the setting of the building blocks of his story are solid – with some polishing and final touches, Terral’s books can go from diamond in the rough to, well, quality cut diamond.

I commend G.J. Terral, he has something really solid happening here, and I believe that we are likely to see enjoyable titles from the author into the future.

Been a bit longer than a week (as promised) but life is full of disappointments.

THANKFULLY, this book was about as far away from a disappointment as could be! I loved it.

To start things off, Lin is already one of the strongest POV characters I've come across in quite a while. It takes a great voice and way of writing to keep us in the head of one person across all the pages without getting exhausted, and that was certainly the case here. He's a escorter in the Ferricum, charged with protecting those he's travelling with, and within the first dozen pages, events that end up beyond his control throw his world into a tailspin.

The Ferricum is an interesting aspect to the story; the ruling order than follows all things according to the Tapestry, Lin is vigilant in his beliefs and faiths, and raised from a child to fight against its enemies, specifically untethered. Untethered are shown fairly early as being absolute monsters; incredibly strong, have powers that go along with it, and just generally not a fun time to deal with in addition to them being seen as the absolute enemy of the Ferricum.

As the story progresses however, we start to see things from other views, especially those who are very inclined to point out Lin's faith in the Ferricum is misguided on every level. The way of life Lin has always known are stripped away to the most basic level, leaving him incredibly conflicted and shaken. It was a great backstory to have, since it put his and the other characters motives into question.

I think the strongest part of the story was the way in which the characters believe what makes a person "untethered." According to some, any magic used in ways the Ferricum deems valid automatically makes you a bad guy/girl, but that is very quickly turned on its head once another character is introduced, named Tylle. She's technically an untethered, but....not a bad person, which is pretty clear once she saves Lin's life, stitching his flesh which heals him but is against his belief system. But, does that make Lin one of the untethered he was always taught to fear? The opposing viewpoints bring up an interesting idea, and leaves open plenty more internal conflict for the characters as the story goes on.

One of the other highlights for me was the characters themselves. All of them, from Lin to Tylle, and everyone else we encounter along the way, all are fully fleshed out with reasoning to their actions and a complex backstory that helps to make it all make sense. Even the stories bad guy Aemun, is SUCH a scumbag of epic proportions, but you're left wondering if he's actually right in his thinking along the way. It was a great way to show both side of the underlying conflict, by having Lin equally influenced by both sides until the climax picks up.

Meanwhile, the book also introduces one of the coolest group that operates in the shadows; The Noosemen. First off, sick name. Really badass, and they lived up to the type. Another group of people that seem to be untethered, but are they just wielders of magic or full on monsters? Either way, they were awesome to read about, and anytime one of them came onto the scene, tension (and my blood pressure) skyrocketed.

I also want to give a shoutout to one of the best quotes I've read recently:

When Tylle grew silent, Lin looked up at her face. “And?”
“And?” She asked back.
“I don’t see the moral in this tale.”
Tylle shrugged and pulled her knees to her chest. “I didn’t say there was one.”

Overall, this was an incredibly strong debut, much less start to a series. With book 3 coming out soon, I'm incredibly pumped I have book 2 already downloaded and ready to go. This was such a great start to what I'm sure is going to be an epic journey with Lin and co.

On the surface of things, Bloodwoven seems like a fairly simple book. A soldier finds the person he is meant to protect dead, with an apparent murderer standing over them. Now that soldier must protect his superior and get the murderer to face justice. So far, so fantasy convention. But! There are some quite deep themes running through Bloodwoven and it makes this a very interesting read.

The worldbuilding and the accompanying magic system is fascinating, complex and has one of those aforementioned deep themes running through it. Danica has been subjugated by Ladrica and ruled by the Ferrucium for generations. And, as we all know, history is written by the winners. Therefore, although this is a personal tale of loss, revenge and justice, it is also a tale of colonialism and what happens when people are made to forget their own history. It is reminiscent of The Malitu Series by James Lloyd Dulin but here people have forgotten the past and the invaders have won. It adds depth to the story, as can be seen in later chapters (no spoilers!). It also adds interest to the magic system, giving two different paths; the state regulated one and the more historically local one. It is a very intriguing system and I loved the idea of Stitches but I'm a bit unsure where the untethered come about. I'm sure we will see more of the untethered in sequels but I did get slightly confused with them here.

The characters are an interesting bunch. Lindel is our main guy; an Escorter with the Ferrucium, he protects people while travelling throughout the country. Well, he's supposed to. On his latest mission, one of his protectees is murdered, he is attacked by brutal assailants and left for dead. He is rescued by the perceived murderer and healed with the use of forbidden magic, causing Lin to be an Oathbreaker and potential untethered. Lin is a well-rounded character, with his dilemma and personal battles written with care and attention. The rest of the characters are dealt with in similar fashion. They are complex, with multiple facets, giving them that real life feeling that can sometimes be forgotten in fantasy. These characters have flaws, are morally grey for the most part and can be cowardly/selfish etc but that should be celebrated. Complex characters for the win! There is a very punchable antagonist, who is creepily slimy and I was delighted when he got his comeuppance.

One thing I have noticed is the circular trends in tropes and the current favourite seems to be characters turning into things they previously hated/despised etc. This is the third (I think) book I have read recently that has this trope. It's not my favourite but I certainly don't hate it. It does allow for a lot of character development and personal introspection when done well but it can also lead to a lot of whining and sulking when not. Bloodwoven does fall into the "Done well" category. Lin can get a bit maudlin but he does fall short of whining, which is a win in my book. If you are a fan of this trope, then this is a good book for you.

I think this is the first full length novel by the author and the beginning of a trilogy. G. J. Terral should be feeling very pleased with how this turned out, as it is an excellent book. I am very intrigued with where this is going to go next and I definitely want to know more about those untethered! I look forward to the next instalment of the Binding Tenets. A neat Swords and Sorcery fantasy with some deep themes and complex characters.

I received a review copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you

This story follows a soldier grappling with moral turmoil after a shocking event, forcing him to question his core values 🤔. The dark setting and intense adversaries add to the emotional weight, making for a gripping, quick read 📖. The inner conflict is well-portrayed, but some readers might find the plot a bit thin, with more focus on the protagonist's struggle than external action 🏹. The world-building and fight scenes are engaging, with a unique magic system, but it didn't quite click as a standout read 💔. Overall, it's a solid story with complex themes and a thought-provoking premise 👍.

An action-packed fantasy tale, with its characters at the heart of it: Bloodwoven is a sensational debut for G.J Terral

The story follows Lin, an Escorter of the Ferrucium order, as he unravels the truth behind the powers that be while trying to ensure he doesn't unravel himself.

The pacing is excellent, with well constructed action scenes aplenty and becomes virtually unputdownable by the latter half.

The magic system is one of the more unique ones I've read recently. It appears simple on the face of it but gradually becomes more complex with much more to learn in future books.

The characters are top notch also. There are ones you love, ones you don't and by the Six there is one son of a bastard-man you loathe more than anything.

All in all, this is the perfect action-packed fantasy novel I've been looking for for quite some time.

This book blew me out of the water. Going into it I wasn't sure what to expect, but I didn't think I'd be falling into a beautiful and emotional journey that featured deep character growth, action, magic, and massive soul piercing questions. The author does a fantastic job at giving us these characters, weaving a world, and having a story that makes you question everything while being a ton of fun to actually read.

This is definitely a book I will be picking up again!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story of Lin, a man thrust into a situation that initially seems far beyond his abilities. While he has certain powers, he struggles to grasp the full scope of what's happening until it's too late, adding a layer of gripping tension to the story.

The magic system is intricate and thoughtfully crafted; understanding its nuances takes time, but it evolves naturally as we follow Lin’s journey. This gradual reveal keeps the story engaging and makes the magical elements feel authentic.

There’s no shortage of action scenes and meaningful friendships along the way. I’m eagerly anticipating Book 2 to see where Lin’s story leads and have a feeling he might find himself in even hotter water.

This is not a full review. I read through the beginning of all 300 SPFBOX contest entries. This was a book I wanted to read more of.

A magically gifted soldier is anxious to reach the next village before the woman he is escorting gives birth. There are worse dangers in the dark forest than the roots that may lame their horses.

This is a terrific fantasy opening. It is focused, active, introduces its world steadily and sensibly through its characters, has revealing and engaging dialogue, magic, tension, friendship, danger - it has everything.

The close 3rd person prose is always competently building out the story without ever feeling dense or overwrought. We never stray too far from the immediate action and what we need to understand to add meaning to it.

There’s character conflict that is dramatically understated. There’s good horse care. There’s village yokels who both feel comical and like real people. There’s a breadth of tone in this opening that should be appealing to all kinds of readers.

There’s a dark tinge to the danger here, but so far this hasn’t been at all gruesome. It does not feel grim, however dark the night.

Its pregnant female MC is treated as a person in the scene. Everyone is worried about her. But there’s also something mysterious going on. There is a real human touch to everyone and everything in this.

This isn’t in a rush, and so far everything about it is unreservedly interesting, from the spray of magic it paints across the page to the religious oaths in the mouth of our MC and the politics of the consequences if he fails in his charge.

It's hard to believe this is a debut novel, 1st in series. It's off to a wonderful start. Pick it up now and maybe you can be one of its first 50 reviews on goodreads. I’m definitely in!

Bloodwoven is the first book in the Binding Tenets trilogy, and readers who are looking for a new fantasy novel...you can’t go wrong with this one.
Bloodwoven details the story of Lin. He’s an Escorter for the Ferrucium, but all of that is about to change with an attack that makes it impossible for him to be on hand to defend those he was sent to escort. But what if it was all part of a bigger plan and he’s the “fly in the ointment.”
Lin’s entire life takes a turn when an attack at a village leaves him broken and on the verge of losing his life. But when his captive saves his life...it throws everything that Lin has thought out the window. At first he bears resentment, but gradually, it all shifts.
This is a truly interesting novel and Lin’s story is one that will grip you and keep you coming back for more. He wishes to understand the differences of what he has been taught and what another tells him is the truth. He wishes to see justice be served for the loss of an innocent, but at what cost will it come?
Packed with intrigue and drama, this book is one that you’re not going to want to miss. The storyline wraps up with some resolutions, but also leaves things open-ended to let readers know that more is coming, and a bigger danger is on the horizon.
Looking forward to what comes next.

This is an epic adventure that primarily follows Lin. He experiences self doubt, fears, internal conflicts and questions his purpose, beliefs and his mission, making him a complex character you feel invested in.
He is balanced well against Tylle, his unexpected companion, and who challenges and supports him.
It opens with a murder mystery where Lin is faced with a sudden death and 2 suspects, with only their word against the other. Not only that but he has failed in his duty of protection and has to determine the correct path for justice, and help protect a newborn.
The unique magic systems explore forms of bonds and tethers, and I like that it explores the morally grey aspects of humanity, and how Tylle tries to point out people choose to be monsters by their actions, and it's not as straight forward as Lin has been taught.
It explores deep themes including subjugation, indoctrination, and has a very dislikable villain, and I liked the journey of having to work with an enemy and trying to find common ground.
It's an intriguing personal journey, filled with action, drama and monsters.
This is the first in a trilogy and I'm excited to see what's in store for the next book.

This is sword and sorcery at its core but also a personal journey for our main character, Lin. Going through the emotions with him through this journey and dealing with the difficulties of understanding differing beliefs is a major theme in the story. Lin's struggles throughout bring the emotional aspect in very well, and you can't help but feel and root for him. But that's not all. This magic system! It is one of the coolest and most interesting magic systems that I've encountered recently.

I really enjoyed the interactions with Lin and Tylle. Then you have Aemun, who is really easy to dislike as you should! But one character I was super interested in was Denny. I loved her and wanted more of her!

Overall, it's a great read. I really enjoyed it. I look forward to what the future holds for Lin.

I was given an audiobook of Bloodwoven in exchange for an honest review. The audio is well done and the narrator , Simon Alison masterfully brings this story to life.

Bloodwoven is a sword and sorcery tale that dives into a struggle of faith and deals with questions of what is moral and what is not as well as features a revenge plot that is well done. The writing borders on purple while still remaining approachable. The world building could’ve been better but with this being only the first entry in a series has all the potential to expand in future books. One of the standout features is the outstanding character work that draws you in from the very beginning.

I recommend Bloodwoven to anyone who loves fantasy and specifically sword and sorcery fantasy.

What a memorable and compelling read. I was completely consumed by this absolutely fascinating concept. The magic system is unique and so well thought out. The imagery of weaving and tapestries added another layer to it that deepened the whole idea even further.

I loved the characters. They were so carefully crafted and their interactions popped off the pages. The twists of the plot became even more compelling because of how the characters reacted to what was going on. Their decisions and choices, or lack thereof turned a good book into an utterly unputdownable one.

Loved every heart stopping, eerie moment of it. Highly recommend.

WOW! All I want to say is wow! It definitely deserves the five stars in which I have given this book. Lin as the main character within this book was a very interesting character. He had many challenges which he had to face that it became something in which he had to decide whether what he has previously known as true. I loved the story line and plot line of this book. I enjoyed the writing style of this book was amazing, it allowed the book to have a nice flow to it. And when it came to the ending of the book it has instantly made me curious to be able to see what the next book will have install for the series, and for us all together.

An action-packed story full of dramatic duels and chases, surprising plot twists and moral dilemmas.

Lindel thinks he knows what's right - protecting innocents - and what's wrong - corrupt, twisted mages. But a job gone wrong and one helping hand from a mage later, he starts to question everything he believed in. Are mages really as irredeemable as he's been taught? Is the system he served really so righteous, only concerned with well-being of its citizens?

Branded a heretic and outlaw by the organization he served, he must find new allies if he wants to survive, and in doing so, he might entangle himself in a much bigger political intrigue than he expected.

I've beta read an earlier version of this novel, so I expect there are significant changes in the final version. However I must admit I enjoyed it even in the stage of an early draft, and the author can balance action, worldbuilding and character development in well-mixed proportions. The prose was smooth to read and reminiscent of classic fantasy vibes. The characters were distinct and interesting, I found the main cast relatable and the villains sufficiently villainous. We get glimpses of the wider religious and political worldbuilding which I expect will be expanded upon further in the series.

Can't wait to see where the author takes this story further.

What a ride!
This book takes us on a long trip from town to town and fight to fight. And it's so good!

Lindel is a conflicted, interesting and relateable main character. He is so sure that how he percieves the world is the only way, but then he is challenged again and again.
He grows and learns through the whole story, making the character so loveable!

Along his travels he meets new characters that get woven into the story along the way. They help him, challenge him, duel him or want to kill him...we never know...

This book captured my attention from the first page and I read it so fast! (I am usually a slow reader..)
It felt like the story would continue without me if I put the book down for just a little while.

I can't wait to read book 2 of this amazing adventure!

This was such a well written book. I really liked the cover and the map! I’m a sucker for a book with a map. I loved how each chapter has a symbol with it. The characters all had unique names. This book definitely didn’t disappoint. Everything from the title to the whole story was unique. It kept my interest from the beginning to end. Lins character was strong and he his determination was flawless. I loved the magic element. There was never a moment where the story wasn’t interesting. I wasn’t much a fan of Aemun. He is someone I could have done without but sometimes stories have to have those kind of characters that you just want to sucker punch. It was heartbreaking what happened to Margaret. It was a book I’d recommended.

DNF at 30%.

Unfortunately, this book wasn't for me.
The premise is interesting and maybe I'll come back to read the rest of it at some point in the future.

Right now I just didn't feel all that connected or intrigued with the characters or the story - I knew, if I finished it, I wouldn't really care and rate it 2 stars max.
At 30% the world building was pretty unclear to me and mixed with the writing style, I was confused and didn't really know what was going on.

Very grateful for the eARC through Netgalley though.

Bloodwoven is a third person POV swords and sorcery fantasy that takes you on an intimate character driven journey.

The opening pages introduce our MC, Lindel, and the two key supporting characters, Tylle & Aumen. Early on, Terral does a wonderful job of leaving it to question as to who would be Lindel’s ally and who the antagonist. The slow burn realization of who is who is well played. I knew who I wanted to trust and who I wanted to hate. But was it a trap? The lines do begin to clarify as Lindel confronts the complete disaster that his life has become while experience teaches him what’s what.

Initially I was leery that the MC would pan out as over angsty and prone to self-flagellation. My concerns turned out to be unwarranted. I was pleased with how Tarrel managed a character having his entire system of beliefs challenged. Much like real life, Lindel progresses through the stages of grief… anger, denial, bargaining, & depression but can he achieve the final stage of acceptance? What will he accept? A large part of why I appreciate this tale is how this is managed over Lindel’s character arc. There is no rush to revelation and acceptance.

Bloodwoven by G.J. Terral
“Breaking himself, piece by piece, belief by belief, to fit into the thing he needed to be to survive this? Or perhaps he wasn’t breaking so much as shaping.”- Lindel internal monologue.

I give high marks for how the relationship between Lindel and Tylle develops. The two challenge each other logically and emotionally. Can trust, faith and friendship take root when their belief systems cannot be any further apart? Terral explores and leverages this dynamic to great effect from their initial encounter to the finale.

Supporting cast of note are Nebra & Pael. Nebra enjoys being a key fixture from the beginning while Pael is introduced later at a significant juncture of the narrative. While Nebra is of high importance to Lindel, Pael is an old and dear friend of Tylle. Both are feisty and steadfast in their own ways and provide the author with avenues to further explore Lindel and Tylle.

The magic system was intriguing. Magic is commonplace and quickly found within the pages. The reader’s understanding of the system’s capabilities and the consequences for the user are filled out as the MC himself discovers that there is more to it than what he has been taught over the course of the novel.

The consequences for magic users range from the mundane to the utterly disastrous. The disastrous end of the scale provides a threat that is a fulcrum for societal beliefs and adherence to what is considered acceptable use of magic, the binding tenents.

The monsters of this realm, the untethered, are creepy, powerful and ruthlessly violent. They are, or were, human. Terral had these bad guys right in my face. The imagery was sublime enough that I might have had a childhood night terror flashback at one point.

Gradually, the plot expands to encompass elements of skullduggery, revolution, power and politics that culminate in a finale providing a high degree of closure. I felt that the final chapters were a bit rushed. I believe Terral left some things on the table with the build up to the final boss battle. That said, it was still enjoyable and very well done. It could have been better.

Bonus points for ending without a cliffhanger. The epilogue sets up the next book and leaves the reader wanting more. Not everything is happy ever after and it is evident the journey has just begun.

I’m not much of a grammarphile, I’m probably more of grammarphobe, so I’m not exactly familiar with the proper use of clauses, modifiers, prepositional phrases and all that goes into a proper sentence. What I do know is when an author’s prose reads well. Terral’s prose does just that providing an enjoyable experience that is consumed without distraction. So much so, especially for a debut, that I reached out to him to ask about the development and editing of Bloodwoven.

He credits “…a very strong critique group” that heavily influenced the developmental aspects of the story. He shared that the story ended up significantly different than how it started due to the feedback. Terral went through two rounds with beta readers fondly calling out one reader, his stepmother, as “…very loving but absolutely vicious when it comes to critique (in the best possible way).” One beta reader can even be credited with asking a simple question that resulted in significant changes impacting the entire work. I couldn’t imagine what the story would have been without that change. Sorry, but sharing the details would be a spoiler.

Once he felt that it was ready, Tarrel submitted the manuscript to Dom, at Dominsh_Books for proofreading and line edit style suggestions. Dom is a well-known and highly appreciated quantity to much of the writing community.

All this effort culminates in prose that is fluid and natural. The pages turn with ease and carry the reader forward effortlessly and without distraction.

Final impression: Bloodwoven is a highly readable tale with well executed character development, a genuinely interesting magic system and descriptive styling that at times provokes intense imagery. The plot is interesting and does not flounder. Variation in pace serves purpose and advances the narrative. As mentioned, I felt like there were some things that could have been developed that would have made the final chapters better.

I will pick up book two when it is available. This is a fun and engaging read. I expect future works from G.J. Terral to be even better as he grows as a writer.

Starting blood woven within reading a few chapters it does come across quite quickly that it is heavily involved with the world building. The running and mis-running of the magical world and inhabitants that reside there , or the supposed system.
Small details although at times are overly detailed and or described when the point (picture ) has been made , don’t feel it needs that .
Between the start and up to chapters 6-8the story does go a little all over the place then snaps you back just as quickly as the de-tour began.
This aside the conversations between the main Leads are humerus at times down right frustrating but you can easily start to build a picture of how the character is saying things , how they would move around , make a point known the reasoning behind it by that point I feel I was invested and lured in . Very early on we meet Lindl (lin) a military abducted child raised to view things from a certain angle that outwith that scope … well it could get you a front seat splayed out on a burning pyre getting a close up look at how dense the wood is .Lin strives to carry out any and all orders in a respectable manner and efficiency.Prides himself in what he does and does not question too much about it .
Then we meet Lin’s magical migraine of a woman Tylle (the best cup of mead you have ever tasted …… but the worst hangover you have ever experienced all wrapped up in a spicy attitude bow ready to release the quiver at any moment) ferocious to her beliefs and the mission to over throwing the barbaric system. These two are thrown together and each getting on the others last nerve

Both go through harrowing experiences together leading to weafts of each of their beliefs being intertwined.

The novel is a slow build up at times using the same descriptive phrases in repetition.
Things regain its footing with a clear and not so obvious direction by chapter 9 this is where concentration is key. If this book lured you in with the Viking esq cover , it is very loosely sprinkled throughout. If you are wanting an action packed heart strumming read , yes stick with it , it will deliver what you seek personally for me this was a 3.75 Blood woven is part of a trilogy so I do look forward to reading both when they are released .
With blood woven I went through every emotion possible , even at the blips it is a book I would pick up and read again .
Here are a few snippets of conversation from some of the leads .
“I’m sorry I didn’t ask you if you wanted me to save your life ,but it had to be done “

“You cry like a baby bird that has fallen from it’s nest, that the gods did not show mercy by cracking your skull on the ground”

“Stop mentioning my eyes. Stop it. Carine told me to test you . She said , Denny don’t go overboard,Denny, don’t hurt him if he is close .denny are you listening? Denny , do this and you will get first kill when we infiltrate the ferruciven. But if you mention my name yes again , I will take yours and wear them as earrings. And deal with her disapproval later, Understand ?.

“Understood”
