Angels & Shadows

Rate this book
This romantic adventure follows the monumental journey of orphaned brother and sister, Ben and Elizabeth Robinson. They are unknowingly descended from a highly evolved race that colonised and integrated with us over 5000 years ago after fleeing from their doomed planet, Angelos.
This gentle and deeply compassionate race had evolved over the millennia to have a dreadful power over Nature, but they chose to integrate with us at the cost of diluting their bloodline and consequently reducing their longevity and powers. 5000 years later there remains only two full blooded 'Angels', Maelströminha and Crystalita, nubile Matriarchs of their civilisation, who's pure genes are their only hope for the rejuvenation of their kind. Elizabeth and Ben are siblings of that same bloodline, a rare occurrence and essential to the Angels to achieve this continuity.
When the Angels colonised, they brought with them baggage in the form of another much darker corrupt race, the 'Shadows', who they lost control of over the centuries. The Shadows did not integrate and consequently did not dilute their powers and, as a result, the balance of power tipped their way. They became the ruling power in today's global society consisting of the oligarchs, corrupt politicians, religious leaders, zealots and terrorists.
Elizabeth and Ben get caught up in the dreadful, on-going power struggle between these two conflicting races, fighting a war for peace and harmony on the one side and ultimate global domination on the other. The adventure and enduring love stories that ensue will have you riveted!

The author of this book reached out to me for an honest review so I downloaded the prequel, which he recommended, on KU. The story follows Lizzie and Ben who are the descendants of angels and are the key to their future survival. They have to learn the tricks of time travel so they can fight against the Shadows and set the world right again.

I need to start by saying this book is definitely more sci-fi than fantasy and so the writing ties in with that. I did find there was too much description and lingering on scenes that didn’t add to the plot, with a lot of information thrown at you at once. There wasn’t any sort of normalcy to the book and I felt Lizzie and Ben got close to death so much I was routing for one of them to actually die😂. I did think the fighting scenes were really well written though and I think the detailed fights is something people will appreciate.

Personally, I thought there were too many POV’s and it stopped me from connecting with the characters. I would’ve loved to have seen/experienced some of Lizzie’s dreams rather than being told about them - and I think that was something that was done a lot (telling instead of showing).

The plot was really interesting though! And I loved the scenes with the mirrors and learning about how they worked; to the point where I found myself itching to fast forward for the scenes with them in. So naturally the last 20% of the book was my favourite.

I loved the time travel concept and how it all linked in where we had glimpses of the future and I think that was one of my favourite parts because most books don’t allow you to see the future for whatever reason🙄. The writing style is more for adult readers, or advanced readers and is very descriptive, as I said, so if you love description then you’ll love this.

Overall, I’m not a fan of sci-fi so this book wasn’t my cup of tea, however, there were some parts of it I loved and I can appreciate the hard work and research that has gone into it.
