Grave Commitments

by Enosh Sunny Lazarus

Darrorsville has never been at peace. A three-decade-old curse has spread a shadow all across this diminutive town. People live in fear of a restless Spirit that awakens once the embrace of the night has taken over. It viciously kills all who wander close to the old ruins that are forbidden after dark and the recent deaths of some young tourists only strengthens its ghostly presence. Marcus Gethen, a fugitive from justice, arrives one stormy night seeking refuge in this dreary town to escape the hands of law but finds himself at the mercy of death. Whether he survived the Spirit or died at its hands baffles even the wisest of the townsfolk including the authorities, but Gethen has miraculously lived. He’s sheltered by the most respectable man in town, Woodner, who has concealed his own secretive past for decades. With the arrival of an unwanted guest, that secret stands in jeopardy. Elizabeth, a young woman working for Woodner, is given charge of Marcus’ lodgings. But her actual interest lies in discovering the truth behind the mystery of how Marcus still lives. Gethen’s aim to stay hidden from public attention is thwarted when he meets Audrey, Woodner’s daughter, and realizes her to be a girl he once saved. But his true fears arise when the Spirit begins to haunt him with a terrifying visit each night. These frightening sightings rattle him to the core. Unable to overcome that sudden horror, Gethen resolves to leave the town in which he sought sanctuary hoping to find his release from the dreadful Spirit. But the undead aren’t easily deceived…
