Fletcher
I’m a total nerd, but I look like a jock. I had a perfect GPA in high school, and my GPA in college is perfect too. I smile when I’m supposed to smile. I have two loving parents and a brother and sister who are always by my side. I’m the perfect all-American guy.
But the only thing that actually defines me is the before. The things I keep hidden deep inside because I’m too afraid of losing what I have now.
The past lives deep inside me as I force the plastic smile on my face. And no one sees through it because I’m just that good.
No one except . . . him.

Ronan
Every day is like a dream. A dream I live, not knowing when I’ll wake and find I’m still living in a nightmare.
I never made it out, and these past few years have all been fake.
Then he walks into my classroom . . . with that cocky smile in place. Not a care in the world. I doubt he’s ever had to worry about a thing in his entire life.
He's exactly like all of the entitled, spoiled brats I teach every day in my part of the college campus, but something about Fletcher Moore really rubs me the wrong way.
I shouldn’t let him get to me, but something about him makes me too angry. Too annoyed.
Just too damn . . . hostile.

I think I’ve found my soulmate, believe it or not, I really truly do, and I have to let him go.

Super steamy professor/student summer fling romance that predictably not ended when it was supposed to. Nothing really new or particularly memorable but I liked reading it a lot.

“You deserve love too. You don’t see it, and I get it, but I’ll show you. I’m just the right kind of stubborn you need. I’m going to love you so damn hard, you’ll never question it again.”

And hell, I loved Blair. I wonder if there is a book for her and her hubby too. I haven’t found one but I would totally read it. That woman is a force. Maybe I’m finally going to read Hostile just for this lady. *lol

EDIT: whoop whoop, the author listened to her readers and re-released the parents' story on her website!! Love this!!

❝ I think I’ve found my soulmate, believe it or not, I really truly do, and I have to let him go.❞

Too Hostile was a very sweet and romantic read. Seeing Fletcher and Ronan find their well-deserved happy ending was lovely and surprisingly emotional. I guess I just connected to these characters more than I thought I would.

“I would have saved you.” He leans closer to me, his mouth close and his eyes on mine.
I think you did.”

Their stories and their pasts were very touching, and I love when broken souls find each other and learn to love and heal.
The forbidden aspect wasn’t very prominent as other teacher/student romances I’ve read, since most of their relationship develops during the summer, so they were kind of missing that extra risqué factor.
I also felt the jump from “dislike” to “kissing” was a little abrupt.
It was still a very sexy and fun love story, though.

“You’re going to wreck me.”

Well, that third-act break-up certainly wrecked me. These two had me tearing up so many times. It’s not particularly angsty or heavy, but it just hit me right in the feels.
Having absolutely loved Hostile, I’m glad this was also a pretty solid win and that Fletcher got his HEA.

“Fletcher,” I say weakly. “No one loves me.” He only smiles, and then his hand cups my jaw. “I do.”

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

Tropes: age gap, professor/student, grumpy/sunshine, found family
Feels: 3.5/5
Steam*: 3.5/5
Kinks: n/a
Angst: low
HEA: yes
Pairing: MM
Triggers/potential icks/content warnings: past child abuse, abandonment, foster care, emancipation

Fletcher is 18, and a bit of a baby bi, just starting to come out to his family. He was abused as a foster kid (not sexually). Adopted after some rough stuff at 13. And while he's put on a happy face he's still triggered at times. He's a genius. He's just entered college this year, he graduated high school a year early.

Ronan is 26, a very young professor at the college. He is a former foster kid himself who never got adopted, got emancipated at 16 and has worked very hard to get where he is. His job and his house are security to him, he's very protective of his security. He has Fletcher in his class for a semester and the entire semester Fletcher gets on his nerves and riles him up. Ronan thinks that Fletcher is spoiled and doesn't like what he represents. Fletcher flirts every chance he gets and just loves to press Ronan's buttons.

At the end of the semester, some tension explodes between them but Ronan doesn't want to do anything about it because of his job. They run into each other over the summer and Fletcher convinces Ronan to give in to a summer loophole (he's not a student) and hookup with him for the summer. They have a great summer together getting to know each other, sharing parts of themselves they don't usually share with people, being vulnerable, and having some lovely smutty time together. Summer is coming to an end fast and the expiry date on the relationship is coming. Can they work something out to keep their relationship going?

I loved the early interactions that these guys had together. It had me squealing and kicking my feet. I love a grumpy character being aggressively pursued by a boy obsessed! I kind of wish this was a longer book and we had gotten to see a more drawn out period of time where they bantered back and forth, where Fletcher continued to drive Ronan crazy, where the sexual tension just simmered wildly before they got together. Given the length of the book they did need to get together sooner rather than later so I get why the author did what she did. But a longer book where they drew that out would have just been so good. I liked the two of them together. They had great chemistry and emotionally glomped on to each other. They were so flustered over each other it was cute.

I didn't like how the very beginning out of nowhere Fletcher's adoptive mom Blair encouraged him to have a romance with a professor. It's just not realistic for a protective Mama Bear even a progressive one like her to encourage a relationship where the power balance is not usually in the younger one's favor.

I quite liked this book. It was low angst, it was a nice humorous read with great tension. I would have felt a bit more comfortable though if Fletcher was at the end of his college career as opposed to the youngest possible student he could be, with him having skipped a grade. 18 is very young. Especially when your love interest is 26, that's a big gap for that age. I know that Fletcher is more mature than other 18-year-olds. But still he's very young to be in an age gap relationship like this. Rhett and Grayson's story (Hostile) was five stars to me and it's a keeper that I enjoy rereading, they got together when they were both 18, and I didn't have a problem with young love then because they're equals, they're in it together. But with an age gap where one of them is 18? A bit uncomfortable. Unrealistic that someone in Ronan's position would be gambling everything that's important to him on an 18-year-old who might be flighty.

Some notable moments:

I love this banter. I wanted more of this! "He just grins even more at me now, knowing without a doubt he’s annoying the shit out of me. And likely knowing that I can’t say shit to him because I don’t want to lose my job. “Now, that doesn’t sound very fun, Professor.” Yup. I’m not going to make it. There’s no way. One of us is going to die this semester."

The tension here! "“I was wondering if you need a TA for next semester.” The man before me looks at me incredulously. And just stares for what feels like forever. I mean, honestly, I’m not one to get nervous, but the guy is making even me a little twitchy. “Are you serious?” He also keeps his voice pretty low but deadly as he looks me square in the eyes."

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I honestly have no words here. This was a pile of crap. A bad copy-paste of Hostile. The author took the same elements and attached them to Fletcher's story and in the process completely ruined everything.

The storytelling was worse than your average middle schooler writing his afternoon fantasies, not to mention the almost 18 aspect of this story.
Now, I don't mind age gaps, but the way Fletcher's age was handled here, made me throw up.

🟢 Professor/student
🟣 Age gap - 8 years 18/26
🔵 Bisexual/gay
🟡 Unconvincing love story
🟢 College, power dynamic (not done well)
🟣 Professor was annoying, obnoxious and just unlikeable
🌶️ I didn't care for smut, it was very present and I honestly couldn't care less; both vers

Let me just give you the idea of the story, because I can't describe differently how insanely terrible this was.

Fletcher is Rhett's brother from Hostile, he's a really smart kid who looks like a model. He was funny, sweet and kind of a nerd but with lots of muscles in that book, so of course I was excited to read about his book.

Fletcher went to college at 17 years old and just turned 18 when he started getting into verbal fights with a 26-year old (??) college professor who absolutely hated him. Ronan hated this particular student because he was good looking, came from money, was flirty, dressed well and was just smart, despite not really trying hard.
This animosity Ronan felt for a barely legal student was so damn inappropriate and out of place in a college setting that he'd definitely be sacked in real life, this wasn't good .

“What are you doing here?”
“Reading,” he supplies the obvious answer.
“No.” I say again, and that word just seems to be stuck in my head. “You don’t just come to the library during the summer to read. No.”
“Libraries are my favorite place.”
“Bullshit,” I whisper- hiss.

“Who the hell are you?” I ask angrily. “You make no sense whatsoever.”

“Because you saunter into my classroom with expensive clothes and so much damn I don’t give a fuck attitude, it makes me want to scream. Your arrogance is unmatched.”

“Well, he is a damn fetus,” Ronan grumbles.

This guy is so way out of line, he's getting too personal and basically harassing a student because of his own personal preferences, while at the same time knowing the student's barely 18 years old, professor's personal opinions shouldn't be expressed out loud about a student's whereabouts or character, if it doesn't affect the class, this was just Ronan's own pet peeves, he should've been an adult and controlled himself, so it's safe to say that morally and ethically speaking - Ronan was shit. A complete shit.

The chemistry was non-existent, they were just fucking around and even that wasn't good. Absolutely no chemistry and the dialogues were terrible.

“I’ve thought about what it would be like to be inside you for so damn long.”
Relief goes through me at the sound of his words. “Are you going to find out? My ass really is spectacular.”

“I don’t have any lube. Please tell me you thought ahead.”
I grin at him, pointing toward my bag. “I’m like a motherfucking Boy Scout.”

Oh, god. Just shut it.

Ronan's two teacher friends also had big opinions about Fletcher and were constantly in his business, which again seemed very inappropriate for a couple of professors and an 18 year old student.

"She sits down in one of the desks in the lecture hall in the front row. “Fletcher looks great.”
My gaze shoots to hers. “He does?” I mean, he’s young. Of course he bounced back. I might have too if I was still eighteen.
“Yup. Handsome and smiley as ever. Flirts with everyone in my class— not in a sexual way— but in that charming way he has about him. Pretty sure at least half my students are totally in love with him.”"

Why does she care how one of her students is flirting? Wow, amazing.

If the author was going for that forbidden aspect, it failed. All the new characters were shit, they were all obsessed about Fletcher and again, him being barely legal just rubbed me the wrong way here.
Ronan was awful, his struggles and character unconvincing and for a 26-year old he sounded like he was 50. A bitter 50 year old who was milking this foster care thing to the fullest. He wasn't mature, didn't grow up yet, he's just a sad, miserable, terrible character, really.

Why Fletcher didn't get a good, hot, older, sane professor is beyond me.

Everything else was the same as in Hostile - the cabin, the lake, the dinner at the parent's house, siblings, I mean it just looked like the author had zero inspiration for Fletcher.

ARC kindly provided for the author in exchange for an honest review

I can't believe it's been two years since Hostile came out, and Fletcher's book is finally here! and of course the wait was worth it because Nicole Dykes never disappoints: Fletcher & Ronan were unexpectedly fun, with a love story different from the one I imagined, BUT that I enjoyed from the beginning, and as usual with this author, we have the most interesting, fun and sweet cameos with Rhys & Blair, Bree, Rhett & Grayson, which made this story even more perfect.

Fletcher never had a simple life: abandoned by his parents and mistreated in the system, but since he found Bree & Rhett's love, everything in their life improved a lot, and when the three of them were adopted by Rhys & Briar their lives took a complete turn. However, in Too Hostile, Nicole shows us how Fletch's past continues to torment him in unexpected ways and he's forced to show the image of an arrogant, conceited, spoiled and privileged guy to protect himself from the outside. Fletcher's story broke my heart a little, but I also really liked reading him fighting to conquer Ronan, being the sexiest, flirtatious and funniest of this pair, enjoying his moments with his brothers and also with Briar.

Ronan is a new character for those of us who love this author's books, the grumpy professor who hates Fletcher, can't stand being around him and who hides an equally tragic and heartbreaking past than that of his least favorite student. Ronan stole my heart VERY quickly, I think he is a character with whom I have a lot in common and who I loved reading struggling to enjoy his short time with Fletcher, growing little by little throughout the story and sharing with his own circle of friends the most interesting and fun conversations too.

Fletcher & Ronan have an interesting dynamic from the beginning: Ronan can't stand Fletcher and everything he represents, and Fletch can't help but want to get on his nerves whenever he can, but definitely one of the things I liked most about this book was that, despite the push-and-pull relationship between the two, no one can ignore how much they are attracted to the other making their teacher-student relationship even more complicated. I also LOVED that Ronan fell in love with the real Fletcher, that he showed him how much he means to him, despite his fear and insecurities, and that he finally gave miself the opportunity to open her heart to him.

Honestly, I can't remember how I ended up liking the first book "Hostile" so much... Maybe because it was my beginning with MM romances and I had little comparison back then, lol.
But this? My 10 year old daughter writes better than that and her characters and stories do have more depth. This is just bad on so many levels.

Oh Fletcher and Ronan🥹

Fletcher is Ryatt’s adopted brother and Ronan is his ever-grumpy professor who hates him without knowing him.

This book is heavy in the “judging a book by its cover” trope and makes Ronan appear fairly douchey. I didn’t hate him as much as I expected to based on some of the other reviews but maybe that’s because I can relate to him?

I hated how he monopolized on Fletcher’s disclosures while intentionally refusing to disclose anything remotely personal. That was worse for me than his misjudgments. 😭

It hurt but it was so good. A good hurt that we all know and love. 🥹

Just like with Hostile, I just wish we got more of them once established. Everything wrapped up in a bow and immediately ended but now I miss them 😭😭

Anywho,
I love them. They deserve happiness. 🖤

Nicole Dykes does grumpy/sunshine trope like no other. It was such a fun read, and I loved revisiting the world and meeting all the characters again from "Hostile."

This time, we're following Fletcher and Ronan.

And, Just like Grayson in "Hostile", I fell head of heels for Fletcher. What can I say? sunshine boys are my kryptonite. He is smart, sweet, caring and selfless but hides all these underneath his arrogant, cocky facade to deal with his past trauma from foster care.

Ronan, who also grew up in foster care but had a tougher time, only sees Fletcher's fake outer shell at first and judges him for it. I have to admit, Ronan's attitude toward Fletcher really annoyed me in the beginning. Like, don't be so quick to judge my precious boy! But he does redeem himself when finds out about Fletcher's past and realises they are not so different after all.

Overall, this book was a quick, easy read with lots of warm, fuzzy feelings and characters you can't help but love. I can already tell it's going to be one of those books I turn to when I need a pick-me-up.

Trope/Triggers
Grumpy/Sunshine

Age gap (18 & 26)

Summer loopehole
Mention of child negligence in foster care

I've been waiting a long time for this - Fletcher's book is finally here! I absolutely loved "Hostile," which was my first book by this author, and all the characters were fantastic. I was especially excited to read about Fletcher, who is now a college student and aces everything he does. However, he puts on a facade of a typical spoiled rich kid, which doesn't sit well with his professor, Ronan. Ronan assumes that Fletcher has never worked for anything and has no idea about his past, which leads to some hurtful assumptions and misunderstandings between them.

While I enjoyed their back-and-forth banter, I also found it frustrating that Ronan didn't take the time to understand Fletcher's situation. Eventually, they both opened up about their pasts, and their summer fling was smoking hot. However, Ronan's reluctance to risk his job and his painful past made things complicated. The author did an amazing job of creating complex, nuanced characters.

Now to my favourite person Blair, oh my god she was such an amazing mother to all her kids and I loved her scenes in this book and the lake scene 🤭
Also Bree, Rhett and Grayson ... I was so happy to see them again. Also, Josh, that was a surprise now I am hoping Nicole writes him a book too... If it's possible because that baby needs someone to bang with.

Overall, this book was a wonderful read, and I highly recommend it. If you've been waiting for this book as eagerly as I have, don't hesitate to check it out.

to be honest, this book was a little bit disappointing as it is pretty much a copy and paste of the first book called “hostile” with the whole “we only have until the end of the summer they fall in love after two seconds and they end up breaking up just to get back together not even 10 pages later”… was expecting better as this book followed Rhett’s brother Fletcher falling in love with his professor, mind you Fletcher had turned 18 that year and ends up sleeping and falling in love with his 26 year old professor which felt highly inappropriate and the offer tried to pass us as Fletcher being more mature because of his abuse in foster care and I mean of course I can totally understand that what he faced in his childhood could make him more mature, but that’s not a reason to get with a guy that’s older than you even though you were only 17 three months ago and Ronan‘s friends are a lovely bunch but as a 39 year old you shouldn’t be pushing a 26 year old to sleep and fall in love with a belly 18 year old child FYI...

it also felt like there were things that didn’t match the first book as Fletcher was known as this guy that every girl wanted to be with but he wouldn’t even go and need them unfortunately in his own book apparently he was a playboy and very sexual which I just did not get and in the first book in the epilogue when it was seven years in the future Rhett and Grayson end up saying “they think Fletcher is in love” but Fletcher’s book it’s only a couple of months into the future so and none of this makes sense…

the only thing I really liked about this book was seeing the sibling dynamic as well as Blair and Rhys because they are such a lovely family and we can see how their future progresses which was really nice to see !

I think I’ve found my soulmate, believe it or not, I really truly do, and I have to let him go.

Hostile was the first book I ever read by Nicole Dykes and it has a special place in my heart. I went into reading Too Hostile completely blind and I couldn’t put it down. It was angstier than expected but it has Nicole’s signature gentle hand while treading emotional waters and found family is a big part of this book.
Ronan was a tough one for me to like initially specially because we don’t immediately come to know the source of his biases but that turned around for me quick and his chemistry with Fletcher is undeniable going from irritation to attraction and then ofcourse feelings galore. I love Fletcher - so resilient and smart and comfortable in his skin, though it took me a minute to get comfortable with his age. Love Blair always and it was lovely to see Rhett and Grayson again

Expect:
* Professor student
* Age gap ( 8 years)
* Opposites attract
* Forbidden themes
* Found family
* Steamy
* Coming out
* Foster care themes

“You’re going to wreck me.”

I know he’s dangerous. I know he’s a professor at the college I attend and that it’s maybe a little inappropriate for me to have this big of an obsession with him. But the dude haunts my dreams. What can I say?

Yeah, I’m for sure in trouble here.

“This whole narrative where we must be strong and only take care of ourselves. Never rely on anyone.” She waves her hand in a dismissive way. “It’s all bullshit. We are supposed to lean on other humans. We’re supposed to get love from others. It doesn’t make you weak to need love, Fletcher. Love makes you stronger.”

3.5 stars A good start to the book, but straight away I would've loved a bigger age gap, 26 I thought was a little young to be a professor.
I didnt like Ronan’s attitude towards Fletch in the beginning pages of this.

Fletcher, 18 years, was a foster child having baggage he'd seen after beginning in the care system. He was currently a student in college and had a little crush on his professor, the one who hated him.
Prof Ronan 26 yrs was counting down to the end of the term to be rid of seeing a particular student.

Both characters have challengers, Fletcher wanted to get closer🔥 to his teacher. While Ronan wanted the complete opposite especially with the forbidden rule for teacher and students relations.
I wasn't sure I liked the term the author used with fetus referring to Fletcher's age.
Included are possible trigers of child abuse told, parental alcoholism,
I'm not a fan of coincidences in stories and after reading Ronan’s past I kinda lost interest in the book and skimmed.
An okayish story for a college/ student romance told with both povs for an HEA.

3.5/5. This was quick and fun. I really enjoyed Fletcher and his tenacity, his kind heart, and his fun spirit. I also enjoyed Ronan and his seriousness, his playfulness when he finally lets loose, and his possessiveness over Fletcher. I enjoyed both men's backstories and I absolutely loved Fletcher's family. I thought the conflict made sense and the resolution was realistic. This was a fun read! 2/5 spice levels.

Notes: professor/student, age gap, foster kids, supportive family, past trauma, grumpy/sunshine

I loved these two so much. They have both been through hell and back and have survived. They are both so strong.

Fletcher and Ronan have a connection that goes beyond just the physical. They have to be careful but throw everything into their relationship during the summer.

I loved watching them fall in love and the found family was an amazing addition to their story.

Nicole Dykes strikes again with this continuation of Hostile. Fletcher and Ronan are complexity to the max but the story really comes together because of the world's greatest foster parents and one lovable but cringe worthy cabin scene.

Highly Recommend.

Fletcher goes in to class late all the time and has an "I don't care" attitude. This pushes his teacher Ronan Barlowe's buttons. Ronan is angry that Fletcher just doesn't care about life. Fletcher accidentally shows Ronan that there's more to him than Ronan thinks. What happens when you agree to only a summer fling? You fall in love of course.

I liked the few times that both Fletcher and Ronan used *Baby*. The way Ronan "hated" Fletcher was cute. It's hysterical how even Ronan's friends were sick of hearing how much he hated Fletcher. I'm obsessed with how the way Fletcher said "professor" changed. The whole TA conversation was great. Going into that coffee shop changed both Fletcher and Ronan's lives. This story reminds you to never judge a book by its cover. The family dynamics in this is epic. The ending is perfect.

This book is sexy and adorable at the same time. I don't know how but it works. The intensity in which these two love is incredible. I laughed and cried. I never wanted this to end. I can't wait to read more from Nicole Dykes.

4 ⭐

E o livro do Fletcher finalmente veio aí 🥳

“I think I’ve found my soulmate, believe it or not, I really truly do, and I have to let him go.”

Too hostile, perfectly named because Ronan tried so hard, he didn’t want to want Fletcher but he lost that fight and we should all be glad for that. The hostility Ronan had towards Fletcher, his dismissal of the kid that had everything and Fletcher hiding behind his happy mask trying to get under Ronan’s skin. To have them find out both were very wrong about the other, that their pasts share great similarities made this story.

I’m not always a fan of student/teacher but when it is done right, which Too Hostile is, I am so here for it. I just couldn’t get enough.

“You deserve love too. You don’t see it, and I get it, but I’ll show you. I’m just the right kind of stubborn you need. I’m going to love you so damn hard, you’ll never question it again.”

Yay, we got more mom Blair, and she is like the perfect book mom! She and her antics, butting into her children’s lives, she is everything a great mom should be. And if I weren’t the one who would have to clean up the mess afterwards, I would also instigate more food fights. Nicole, please tell me that we will see more of her and the boys in upcoming books, they have newly adopted boys who need their own story as well! (pretty please)

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
