Mossy Glenn Ranch #5

Riding and Regrets

Rate this book
Jody Bates just wanted to fit in and forget his past, but you can’t escape everything.

Jody Bates had a hard life as a kid, but he’s moved past that and is making a home for himself at the Mossy Glenn. Sometimes he smarts off, but he’s young, and he’s learning.

What he hasn’t learned yet is that you can never completely escape your past.

Jody has a few blank spots, things he can’t quite remember. Like a lot of kids, he did some stupid things and figures he’s lucky to have come out relatively unscathed. Sure there’s a scar here and there, but on the whole, he’s doing just fine.

But something that happened brings about an enormous change in his life. Jody finds himself with a kid he didn’t know he’d fathered, and memories trying to surface about the drug-filled night the child had to have been conceived. Jody, at twenty, is overwhelmed and more scared than he’s ever been in his life.

Noel Cuthbert needed a change. He was tired of the bar scene, tired of getting dumped. He seemed to have a six-month expiration date per relationship. The last guy almost broke him in more ways than one, and moving across the country had sounded like a brilliant idea when he’d first thought of it.

Now he’s in Ashville, Montana, and his Aunt Gertie is doing everything she can to talk him into staying. She needs his help, and Noel needs to be needed.

And he’s never seen anyone who needs him more than the young man who walks into Gertie’s day care with a screaming baby on his hip.

A few things about me...

I am a married mom of four who spends most of the day writing, either on stories or at the blog. I love to write as much as I love to read. I am generally quiet and laid back, choosing to let things slide off me rather than stick and irritate me.

And it's really hard trying to think of descriptives for myself, so I'll just let y'all e-mail me or comment at the blog if there's something specific you'd like to know, and spare you from reading a boring bio:D

Oh, how I've missed the 'Mossy Glenn Ranch' series and its wonderful characters by author Bailey Bradford. It's been five WHOLE months since the last installment and I was starting to go into withdrawal. Really, Bailey? You didn't have to leave me hanging for so long! *grins* The Mossy Glenn Ranch isn't your run of the mill ranch and these guys are far from average cowboys. Each book in the series has been engaging, with me falling in love over and over with all of the characters. I expected no less from 'Riding and Regrets'.

Jody is beyond shocked when his sister shows up at the ranch with a two-year-old named Priscilla, informing Jody the mom is dead and he's the father. He doesn't remember anything about ever having sex with a woman although there's that one night he doesn't remember much about. Of course, Jody has absolutely no contact with any member of his family, so the hatred his sister spews is to be expected. Jody hasn't got the first clue about how to take care of a toddler, much less a girl. Luckily for him he lives at the Mossy Glenn and they've made themselves into a family of their own and none of them are going to let Prissy suffer or be neglected. Jody enrolls Prissy at the local daycare run by Gertie whose nephew, Noel, has just come to stay with her from California. Noel is tired of being used and thrown away by men, tired of his parents who don't care about him or his siblings, and tired of the nightmares. The only bright light in his whole childhood was Aunt Gertie and so he's come to stay for awhile and get his bearings.

Jody and Noel are two of the most love starved men I've ever met. Both just want someone to love and to be loved. This is probably, hands down, the sweetest of the series, so far. Jody and Noel are really wonderful together, Prissy is adorable, and the guys at the ranch are as amazing as always. Well done, Bailey!

Huh? There wasn’t much riding (unless you are being sleazy about it) and I don’t really remember much in the way of regrets. Another mistitled book.

Several things did not work that well for me here. Inconsistencies, such as how is it possible that Jody early on remembers pounding into Frankie – when later it turns out they apparently never had that kind of sex?

And wow. Timescale’s really off here too. It can’t possibly have been three years already since Annabelle had her babies. That doesn’t mesh with the events in this series. At least I don’t think so. Huh.

Far more disruptive, though, the toddler neither seems consistent to me, nor is she really more than a prop. Contrary to her role in this story not that much effort is spent by the author or her father to get to know her at all. I mean Ty got a lot more attention a few books back and that was good.

Don’t even get me started on the silly climax to the Evil People Plot. That’s so painfully manufactured and unbelievably stupid that… words fail me.

With all that, it still wasn’t an awful book. Maybe too shallow and mushy, too focused on sex when there were huge issues that should have been contended with instead. But whatever. It was a nice enough read if you don’t look too closely.

I'm not sure if my tastes are changing or if it's just this book in the series, but I didn't love it as much as I did the others. It was a nice easy read with very likable characters in Noel and Jody. But there was a little too much insta-lust. And their histories both had horrible incidents in them that just didn't resonate with me. What saved this was and adorable little girl as well as the rest of guys at the Mossy Glenn. I loved catching up with them in the book, and of course there was Will, who's probably my favorite character in the series.

Riding & Regrets was a heartbreaker of a novel for me. I found myself wanting to cry for Prissy’s early years and being shuffled around by a mother who wasn’t prepared to be one. This, of course, made me want to bawl when Jody’s love for his daughter grew exponentially considering how little time passed from her sudden arrival in his life to the beautiful ceremony in the epilogue – yet another event that left teary-eyed. Also heart wrenching was Noel’s past and what he endured at the hands of a man who was supposed to love him. While there were plenty of tears to go around in this installment, they were both sad tears and happy tears and I found the overriding theme of the book to be extremely hopeful despite the heartbreak both men endured before finding their happiness.

I was excited to read this book after the way the ending of Fences & Freedom mentioned Jody’s previously unknown child showing up unexpectedly. It wasn’t the idea of a gay man having a child that caught my attention, but rather that the child’s existence was unknown AND unexpected. Granted the unknown wasn’t a total surprise because that kind of thing happens regularly, but the unexpected had my interest peaked and as the story played out I understood why Jody was so thrown by the appearance of his child – he didn’t remember having sex with the mother, or any woman for that matter. Fortunately, the child looked so much like him that he never disputed that he was Prissy’s father and he threw himself fully into being the best father he could be for his little girl. While his bosses and the other hands at the ranch were far more supportive than he ever could have hoped for, Jody understood that he was going to have to put Prissy in daycare while he worked at the ranch. Enter Noel, the nephew of the daycare’s owner, Ashville’s newest temporary (maybe) resident, and the man who may just save Jody from becoming an old fuddy-duddy.

While the attraction between the two men was obvious, Bradford didn’t allow the men to hook-up immediately. The author actually keeps their early interactions true to form for a new parent by Jody being so busy that days and days pass between conversations, dates, and taking it further with Noel. I loved this. Yes, Jody is only twenty, but he’s a new father working full-time who is now a single parent as well. It stands to reason that he would be too tired to go trolling for dates as well as having no time for them either. But when Noel finally makes his move on Jody, oh my goodness was it hot! I enjoyed the symmetry between Noel’s inability to forget the horrors of his nightmare relationship and Jody’s inability to remember the events of the night he conceived Prissy. It enabled them to provide a level of comfort and understanding to one another that I think helped cement their relationship. Watching Jody and Noel fall in love and build their family was a wonderful experience, which was topped off by getting to see Jody threaten Noel’s tormentor and Noel face down his tormentor. And I must say that I loved how that whole scenario played out. Watching the entire ranch fall in love with Prissy was so sweet too. I’m looking forward to reading Broncs & Bullies soon because I’m dying to see what’s up with Duke and Frankie.

This is book five in this series. I think it stands alone pretty well though you may be curious as to some of the other characters.

This book is about Jody. Jody has been working at the Mossy Glenn for a little while. He had recently come out and he and Frankie had been fooling around when Jody’s sister had dropped of an almost three-year-old child telling him it was his and that he was still dead to his family. Of course the bosses of the ranch Carlos, Troy and Will were very acceptable and helpful. Jody meets Noel at the day care he chooses for Prissy and they become friends quickly.

For those of you not familiar with this series it centers around the Mossy Glenn ranch, a very gay friendly ranch. Each book features a different character and has several of the previous ones and ongoing ones interact in each book. You may wonder how a series has different takes on gay cowboys, keeps it pretty sweet, very hot and sexy yet, fresh and interesting each time, but Bailey Bradford is a master at it. Each book is very different though keeping to her style.

I really liked Noel. He isn’t the cowboy but a love interest and also a vegetarian. I absolutely adored Prissy and the baby talk added even more charm to an already charming series. I do have one complaint. The action or conflict that was Noels was resolved in a wham, bam, thank you maam style. It built up slow then all of a sudden it was resolved. I’d have liked a bit more intrigue or it not felt so easy. Just my personal opinion, it didn’t ruin the story for me or anything. I was left with several unanswered questions (sorry I can’t say what without spoilers) I am hoping they will be answered in the next book.

If you like sweet, sexy stories, featuring hot gay cowboys, cute babies, a bit of drama, lots of charm and some hot mansex this is definitely for you!

'Riding & Regrets' started out really well for me. I was totally enjoying the sweet romance that was building between Jody and Noel, it was nice and I was smiling for most of the book and as far as their relationship was going it pretty much stayed that way. Hell I even started developing a bit of a soft spot for Will and Carlos got a brownie point or two as well.

What didn't work for me was the part of the story dealing with Noel's departure from California, his parents and the skeezie ex-boyfriend who so desperately needs to be locked up somewhere for the criminally insane as far as I'm concerned. Also Jody's background especially the details or should I say lack of details around his departure from Texas and the why and how of his becoming a daddy. These parts of the story just felt weak and incomplete and would have been more believable for me had there been a bit more to them.

The other big plus in this story was Prissy (Priscilla). Jody's unexpected surprise (I didn't spoiler this because it tells you he has a child in the book description). She is just adorable and I love the fact that while suddenly finding herself in a totally new environment with a whole bunch of strangers she had her fears and was scared but at the same time she had the resilience of a child and was able to adjust. Also the fact she won everyone's heart with her spunky attitude, kids are amazing and so often we forget the strength of spirit that is contained within those little persons. A strength that can put a lot of adults to shame.

Still overall this ended up being an enjoyable read but the lack of details and the parts of the story that felt to me like they should have been filled out better and given more relevance than they were kept it from being an amazing story, so 3 stars it is.

Growing up in southern California Noel Cuthbert and his siblings wanted for nothing financially with famous Hollywood parents. They were lucky to receive emotional love from their Aunt Gertie who left her life in Montana to raise Noel, Josie, and River. Once they’d grown up and began adult pursuits she returned to her home.

One of eleven siblings Jody Bates grew up in small town Texas. He was the son of a strict Pentecostal preacher and a submissive mother. Jody played the role of fitting in, always knowing that if the truth came out he might not survive the outcome. As a teen he snuck out occasionally until that one awful, horrible blood filled night he can’t piece together made him run. Jody was only sixteen.

Recently fate and time brought Jody and Noel together in Ashville Montana. Jody works at the Mossy Glenn Ranch and receives the shock of his life when his sister dumps a two year old named Priscilla or Prissy on the ranch hand and says he’s been named the father. As for Noel he arrives in Ashville to stay with his Aunt Gertie to escape a pointless life in L.A. and an ex-boyfriend who almost damaged his body and soul beyond repair. Neither young man wants to start up a relationship when their personal lives are in turmoil, but the heart wants what the heart wants. From the moment their eyes meet in town they want.

Rustic charm, homey companionship, and hot sex to enjoy in Riding and Regrets. Author Bailey Bradford pens a refreshingly complicated, sassy drama. The fifth installment in the popular Mossy Glenn Ranch series can easily be read as a standalone story. Jody and Noel have issues, emotional and otherwise, watching them deal with everything and make their lives better is what Riding and Regrets is all about. Enjoy the ride without regret.

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

This is book 5 in the Mossy Glenn Ranch series.
Jody went to a party when he was 16. He can’t remember everything that happened that night but he knows it wasn’t all good. By the end of the evening his family was shattered, he had been beaten by his father, and he left home for the last time. Three years later he has mostly settle into life at the Mossy Glenn Ranch when out of the blue his sister stops by and hands over his young daughter. Obviously more happened that night than he thought.
Growing up, family life for Noel was far from perfect. His parents didn’t give a damn and the only adult that loved and cared for him was his aunt Gertie. When things turn abusive in his current relationship he runs away in fear for his life, the only safe place he can think to go is back to his aunt who now lives in Montana.
If you haven’t read the previous 4 books in this series I would advise you to do so. The group of men that live at the ranch play a part in this story with the help and support they give Jody. His blood relatives may be hopeless and removed from his life but the group of friends he has made on the ranch prove they are his real family when it counts.
This is a sweet love story that starts out with two men looking for a bit of comfort from each other but develops into so much more. The road they take isn’t always smooth but they are good for each other and have a great support network.
When Noels past catches up with him I think it finally lays to rest once and for all that he really is better off without his parents. This book really brings home that you can pick your friends but not your family, but sometimes your friends are the best family you could have! Another great addition to the series.

This book has a plot bunny that has been used reused and quite throughly abused. .. But it wasn't too bad in this instance.
There were 2 things that really bothered me abt this book though. First of all, although the couple Noel and Jody are quite adorable, it's EXTREMELY unbelievable that they were able to build and maintain a relationship while spending almost no time together at all. Secondly, There is a major hoopla about the fact that Jody has no memory of impregnating Prissy's mother. This entire book there is talk of how Jody has lost memory but the details of that night were never revealed. Even though there was access to that information!! It was frustrating to wonder and wonder and never found out!
I liked that this book took place more outside of the ranch than the previous books. The change of scenery was nice and it made the series feel fresh.
The book wasn't bad just a little incomplete and blah. The fact that the couple was hardly in the same room made it hard to get lost in their romance. ... which is kinda the point of these books... right?

I loved reading Jody & Noel story and Jody's daughter Prissy was adorable. Only one thing was unresolved for me, how Prissy came to be. Jody does not remember the event, though when he tries it is some what recalled. What is recalled concerns me and as they are both now seeing therapist, I thought there would be more on this front. Noel's story seemed completed and I enjoyed how the situation with Clive was handled in the end.
