Two Worlds describes what it is like to live in Israel through the eyes of a long-term visitor who has family connections there. The author is a former British academic who has been challenged to test his book knowledge against realities on the ground. Unlike most travel books it is concerned with politics and the sources of conflict. Unlike most political books it looks closely at daily life in an effort to understand the emotions and attitudes which help to sustain the ‘two worlds’ of Israel and ‘Palestine’. Initial impressions of Israel described in the first few essays are followed by accounts of visits to the West Bank, including an interview with a Fatah leader in Hebron, the experience of living in Jerusalem, and discussions of such questions as Zionism and Palestinian statehood.
