L.J. LaBarthe is an Australian woman living with disabilities and her cat. She has always loved books, music, and daydreaming. She has written stories since childhood, often drawing pictures to accompany her tales. She won a competition for drawing a picture of Australian Humpty Dumpty, complete with Aussie hat when she was a young child. The drawing was accompanied by an adventure story with Humpty Dumpty she wrote set in Australia. From that moment on, she has not looked back.
She spends her free time watching television and is an unashamed fan of 'Supernatural,' 'Spartacus' and 'Game of Thrones.' She reads newspapers online for fun and loves a good novel. She loves to cook and enjoys a snifter of absinthe from time to time.
L.J. would like to take a moment to let her university professor in creative writing know that knowledge of iambic pentameter isn't necessary in order to be able to enjoy the craft of writing, no matter how much he may have screamed to the contrary.
I enjoyed this book, it has the adventure that I was looking for and I can't get enough angelic stories. That being said there were a few things I didn't like (not badly written, just not my preference) such as the constant change of characters. While it was unavoidable for for some in order for the story-line to move, I wish that there was more focus on Gabriel and Michael.
Three stars. The second book in this series picks up after the seventy year Archangel/Demon war that was anticipated in the first novel in the series. As anticipated the Archangels won, but there was a heavy toll on the human population -- over two billion people were killed.
But now Angels and archangels are mysteriously disappearing without a trace. It hits everyone the hardest when Archangel Raphael is kidnapped. Raphael is the archangel that controls healing, and without his presence sick people are unable to get well.
On their quest to find Raphael, and all of the other Angels, it is learned that the kidnappers are using some ancient jails and spells to prevent anyone from finding the kidnapped angels who are being sold as slaves.
The remainder of our archangel troop - lead by Michael and Gabriel -- have to find the kidnapper and their kidnapped brethren, and shut down the kidnapping ring. To do that, nine archangels visit a series of human witches and monsters to secure bits and pieces of information about the kidnappers. I found this part of the story to be the most intriguing. The archangels find some of the information, but they do not find the most important pieces -- the name and location of the kidnappers. To secure that information, the archangels make a deal with the Archdemons. Apparently, two Archdemons were involved in the kidnapping plot, and the Archdemons (and the Devil) want to punish their "citizens of Hell" for an excruciating long period of time.
Fast forward . . . The missing angels and archangels are located are freed. The two traitorous Archdemons are returned to their hellish masters for punishment, and the archangels and Angels are returned to their normal positions.
It was a really compelling story up to that point, but then, the author throws in five consecutive sections about different Angels f*cking . . . I thought it was completely gratuitous and cheapened the fantastic story significantly. The only romance that served a purpose is that Michael and Gabriel become bonded to each other.
Then we get to the foreshadowing for the next book in the series. There is a fallen angel named Semjaza who has been imprisoned in a far away constellation for eons. Something happens in the constellation, and Semjaza is freed and is headed to earth. Semjaza is heading towards earth and Gabriel is his target since Gabriel had imprisoned him so many thousand and thousands of years earlier.
Three stars on this book from me. It would have been more except for the author's clunky use of romance scenes piled one on top of the next at the end of the novel.
This was a book were by the first few pages I was let down. I was all geared up for a war, instead it's over. I was completely confused by this since this would have dug into some really interesting stories. Not to mention characters that were developed along with certain plot lines were discarded by the first chapter. My mind had a terrible time switching gears since this book revolved around relationship dynamics between the various couples. It wasn't bad but it wasn't what I was expecting coming out of the first book.
The plot had a very similar feel to it as the first one, as if it was thrown in to add a little action to the story but not something that was really engrossing. I came out of the first book thinking this series had the potential to be an epic war and love series. Now I'm thinking this is a mediocre series with who is hooking up with who with some lukewarm villains along the way.
Seventy years after a power hungry man opened several portals to hell, the war between angels and demons is over and the gates have now been sealed. While everyone is anxious to get back to their lives and away from fighting, there is much yet to be done before the earth and the rest of humanity are well. Just as things appear to be winding down, however, Rafael, Archangel of Healing, goes missing. Now it’s a race against time to find him before the world succumbs to the rising disease and the rapid decrease in treatments that work.
Originally I was a little disappointed that I didn’t actually get to witness the war between the angels and demons but I figure with a span of seventy years that would’ve been a book unto itself.
I read this book even though I don't usually read romance, because it is not just a romance novel. I read it because of the plot and the characters and how I enjoyed the story. I find the Archangels very engaging and I found some of the descriptions - especially when Gabriel's children died - extremely moving. I'm quite interested to see where the author goes with the third book in the series.
I've got this for free not knowing it was the second part of a trilogy. Still, I suppose that Don Bradshaw's review of Book 1 could apply also to book 2.
When Archangel Raphael is kidnapped the others have to ask the Archdemons for help which they are willing to give as the demons who are doing the kidnapping are doing it without Lucifers knowledge
