The Void

Rate this book
The Void, the first true paranormal short story written by Marta Moran Bishop, is reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock or the Twilight Zone of later days.

It will take you deep into the mind and heart of someone either living through a serious mental illness or something mysterious and dangerous resides in the void.

Many years before, Altori and her sister Helen moved into the village. Last year during the night of no moon Helen went out into the void and nearly died. A terrible disease spread through her body. She ran away to escape the possibility of death at the hands of the frightened villagers.

Will Altori survive the void and find her sister? Did Helen ever exist or is Altori suffering from a mental illness?

I love this author's writing style. The prose is so engaging. This paranormal story kept me interested. It's a quick read, and reminded me of something from the Tales of the Unexpected.
Altori lost her sister a year ago in the 'Void' and she goes in search of her a year on. Strange things start to happen to Altori after her night in the Void. History begins to repeat itself. The author uses flashbacks to show what happened to Helen, Altori's lost sister. Will Altori find out where her sister went? Will she survive after the frightening effects of the Void?
This is a story of one girl's journey to find a place where she fits in, as much as it is about a paranormal phenomenon. Definitely worth a read.

Does Altori suffer from a multitude of mental illnesses or is something stranger lurking in the darkness? Her affliction could certainly be described as delusional paranoid schizophrenia with a tendency to inflict wounds upon herself.

The author takes a great deal of time and effort into stimulating the reader's senses, but ultimately where is she leading us in this short prequel? Ultimately, "Brigadoon" and then "The Knowing" came to mind, but the again are we just eaves dropping into the mind of a mental patient?

The Void is an absolutely brilliant mind-bending story that will keep you guessing!

For readers who, like me, enjoy a story reminiscent of the old Twilight Zone episodes, The Void certainly rang all my supernatural story-loving chimes. Yet it is Ms. Bishop’s intricate portrayal of her character’s psychical layers within the story that enriched my read.
When the dark moon-night phase is complete, a night with no moon – the void – occurs. Bad things happen to anyone caught outside during this time – it did to Helen, and she disappeared. Wrestling with her despair over a life of drudgery as an outcast, made worse by the loss of her sister, Altori makes a bold decision. Determined to discover the truth about Helen’s disappearance, she goes into the void for answers and risks the terrible ravages upon her body that will occur.
Altori’s choice is to stay the same – invisible and miserable, or step into the void. To make a choice for change, she must transcend fears, trust in her intuition and go through a phase of pain. There is no guarantee she will survive much less discover the answers, the better life that she seeks.

The Void is masterfully written; it is a psychologically compelling story that integrates themes important for the transcendence of a person from a sense of littleness to one of confident self-worth. I thoroughly enjoyed the paranormal element; it is the transformational, however, that made the story superb.

The Void by Marta Moran Bishop is a mystical paranormal story about two unfortunate girls, sisters Altori and Helen. Helen disapears during the night of no moon in the void and Altori thinks about her sister all the time, trying to understand what had happened to her. She is sure that Helen is alive but where is she? Suffering from her hard work and unfortunate life, Altori falls in trance several times and meets her sister Helen who is in awful physical condition but still alive. Sisters miss their parents and try to find out where their home is. In the non-moon void night sisters make a journey carrying a cryptic box, their legacy. Using the items that were in the box, Altori makes a rite of purification at the end of which a mystical power carries both sisters home.

I love this paranormal story and the feeling of uncertainty it leaves. And yes, it is reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock or the Twilight Zone. It is still not clear whether the events described in the book occured in the material or immaterial world. Was what is happening a sick imagination of Altori, whose life in the material world was so terrible? It still remains a mystery that only makes the book even more intriguing.

Readers meet Altori and through her reminisces, her sister Helen. The two of them had moved into the village, a strange place. As Altori tries to figure out what happened to Helen, she is dealing with her own problems. This is a twisted short story that takes readers to a different realm that exists in the mind.

Seeking their own!

What a dark and powerful story. My mind wandered for a bit then it became clear. A child if the wind. The author captured the essence of the void. I recommend this short read if nothing for the rest of the unknown enveloped me. Truly a haunting story.

My wife bought this book as it is premise that she finds intriguing. I read it first and was just stunned by the poor, repetitive writing. I thought it was me and asked her to read it as well. It made no sense to either one of us. Not quite sure what other people are seeing that we are not. The only positive thing i can say is that there may be a good idea in here, however undeveloped. I tried.
