Five years ago, Tate Brooks walked through fire to save my life and left me with the ashes of our ruined love.

Now, he shows up at my engagement party with one “Don’t marry him.”

Tate and I used to be electric with a magnetic tether holding us together. He devastated me when he left without warning.

If he wants a second chance, he’s too late. It doesn’t matter that every part of my body still aches for him. He’s stitched into my soul, but we lost our chance at forever years ago.

Except maybe that’s not as true as I wish it was, because I can’t stay away. Given the second chance to reignite our spark, I’ll risk the fire—even though I know this only ends with us both getting burned.

*Thank you to the author for the eARC.*

A messy and emotional romance with a firefighter, sunflowers and steam. Starts with Sparks serves angst, mutual pining, and devastation on a polished platter. Tate and Laurel absolutely deserve their happy ending after what Luna put them through!

This book contains heavy content, so please do take care to read the author's note. The spice is cranked to a high heat.

- second chance
- brother's best friend
- roommates to lovers
- small town
- firefighter MMC & dance teacher FMC
- other man drama
- cheating (FMC and MMC don't cheat on each other)

Plus: he loves her dog, lots of nicknames for her, gray sweatpants, "It was always you"

CW: accidental pregnancy and miscarriage, emotional abuse (not by MMC), fire, injury, abandonment, sexual content

Don’t let the pretty cover fool you! This is NOT a light fluffy ready! This book is so emotionally heavy! I found myself in tears more than once! The first half of the book, you get the perfect boyfriend experience! The lust, the passion, the swoon worthy moments. Then tragedy strikes and in the second half of the book, you get the longing, the anxiety, the heart break and the unbearable loss.

Please check your triggers.

I have experienced what the FMC goes through and it’s extremely hard to read. I’m tearing up just writing the review to warn you guys to consider your own mental health 🫶🏽 before reading x

I’ll never look at sunflowers the same way 😭

What an emotional rollercoaster! This book is super addictive and steamy!
Five years ago, Tate Brooks walked through fire to save Laurel´s life and left her with the ashes of their ruined love. Now, he shows up at her engagement party with one “Don’t marry him.”
But if he wants a second chance, he’s too late. It doesn’t matter that every part of her body still aches for him. He’s stitched into her soul, but they lost their chance at forever years ago. Except maybe that’s not as true as she wishes it was, because she can’t stay away. Given the second chance to reignite their spark, they’ll risk the fire—even though she knows this only ends with them both getting burned.
The first half of this book is super-hot, explicit and absolutely addictive. They are SO GOOD together! Even though she has mixed feelings about her best friend, Sam, Laurel falls irrevocable in love with Tate, who is just amazing and is madly in love with her too. But after a horrible tragedy, the next half of the book is an open heart story about resilience, love and struggle to find oneself. I love everything about it. It’s romantic, heartbroken, it has the perfect amount of toxic situations to expose unhealthy love (not with the MMC) and it has a timing that works really great. Their way to each other is passionate but not rush and I was really grateful of that because it seemed real to me.
This is a new author for me, one I hope to be able to read many stories from.

please note that the trigger warnings and topes/themes may contain spoilers
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
HEA: yes
POV: single 1st person POV
spice: several open-door spicy scenes
TWs: abandonment, anxiety, body disfigurement (scarring), cheating, child abuse, drug addiction, emotional abuse, house fire, manipulation, miscarriage (D&C), parental neglect, stillbirth
Kink CWs: anal play/toy usage, biting, breeding kink, cum play, dacryphilia, Daddy kink, forced orgasms, hair pulling, hand necklaces, homemade sex tapes, humiliation kink, “just the tip”, light exhibitionism, somnophilia, oral, pleasure Dom, praise/degradation, rimming, semi-public sex, spanking, squirting
standalone: yes
final thoughts: OMG what an emotional rollercoaster. A high-risk emotional read with lots of high reward for romance. Tate was so close to perfect, and the first half of their love story was almost flawless- I laughed, I swooned, I was kicking my feet. The second half was filled with so much angst, anxiety, pining, loss, and heartbreak and I sweat I went through all those emotions with Laurel.
Please be warned that the triggers are main plot points of the story and come up often so be aware of them, but if you can read anyway, this spicy read will be worth the tears!

“I wanted him to keep my heart this time. I wanted him to keep me this time.”

One word: WOW!!!! Despite what you see on the cover, this book is filled with heartbreak, an emotional roller coaster, and swoon worthy moments. I was so emotionally invested from beginning to end. Please read the TW because this book has a lot of them!

This story is told in two parts: then and now and each part is filled with moments that had me swooning and crying. The prologue hits us hard with Tate, our MMC, arriving to Laurel’s, our FMC, engagement party telling her not to marry her fiancé. This sends us back to the beginning of their love story which at first seems to be filled with beautiful moments and just intense chemistry between them. When I say their scenes are SPICY, I truly mean it. The kinks are kinking! Their connection seems deeper than either of them truly expected but embrace at full force. But tragedy strikes and they are forced to go their separate ways.

The second part of this story really had me sobbing. Laurel goes through so much and all I wanted to do with wrap her in a big hug. She is picking up her heart after Tate disappears on her. Laurel experiences a loss that I would wish on no one and when I tell you Luna does an amazing job really captivating those emotions that you feel that you are experiencing what Laurel is in that moment. When Tate reappears, it’s clear that their love for one another has not died down even though Laurel has tried her best to suppress it. I loved how they worked their way back to one another. Tate and Laurel are true soulmates and I loved their ending.

Thank you Luna Whitney for this ARC! All thoughts are my own.

This novel made me feel ALL of it!
Luna has an incredible gift being able to bring these characters to life. I could feel all of the emotions the MFC was going through.

From soul-crushing love, utter destructive heartbreak 💔, the journey through healing from devastating loss, to admitting that soul mates are not truly a choice.

God I loved how this book made me feel so much. Blossoming love,
The devastation of love lost
The heart heavy loss of miscarriage
Best friends that help you heal
And a love that will bring you to your knees

I experienced laughter, tears, anger & resentment, betrayal, and most importantly love. Love and spice that went hand-in-hand so beautifully

My only “bleh 🤢” was the use of the word “Daddy”

I am 💯 supportive of opinions, thoughts, & feelings across all matters of things.
I will say that I, personally, am turned off by the term “Daddy” during intimacy. To each their own as it should be. Just not for me.

Outside of that, definitely one of the best books I’ve read this year. Highly recommend

When you pick this one up, don’t let the adorable cover fool you into thinking you’re in for a light and fluffy read. This story is anything but that. Following the intense journey of Laurel and Tate, this book dives deep into the raw and emotional rollercoaster of their relationship.

From the start, it's clear that Laurel and Tate are not just into each other—they are made for each other. However, their path is far from smooth. Tate's intensity is exactly what the lost Laurel needs in her life. She starts off as a character who seems out of place, grappling with her own sense of self and past traumas, yet her kindness shines through.

Their growth as a couple is profound. Tate has a way of making Laurel feel like the only girl in the world, and she ate that affection up, which she undoubtedly deserves. But their story is interrupted by a horrific accident that separates them, leading Laurel to eventually move on and fall in love with Sam.

Despite her feelings for Sam, it's apparent that Tate never left her heart. When Tate reappears in her life, I was brought to tears. The reason for his disappearance is heart-wrenching, and while Laurel's pain is palpable, so is Tate's. Tate’s efforts to win back her love and respect involve serious groveling.

Laurel’s journey is a testament to her resilience. She makes questionable decisions, but given the betrayal she’s endured, it’s understandable. She’s been let down by so many that stability, love, and peace were things she truly needed. Tate and Laurel are broken individuals, yet their souls are linked. Their story is a powerful narrative about the importance of communication.

One of the highlights for me was Laurel’s friendship with her best friend, which added depth to her character and offered the stability she desperately needed. Laurel’s time alone was crucial for her personal growth, highlighting her struggle with grief and learning to trust again.

This book tore my heart out, and I want to cry for five business days straight. It’s an extremely emotional read, so be prepared. It’s amazing and I can’t wait for more from this author, but please, check the trigger warnings before diving in—it’s heavy.

* I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a DNF for me, BUT , it’s not because of the story or the writing.

POSSIBLE SPOILER (reason I didn’t finish)

The writing was excellent. It is a page turner, and the emotional background and depth of personalities for the characters was great, and made it really easy to start rooting for the main characters right away.
The world-building of the small apartment that seemed to me like a sanctuary for Laurel was awesome. I could see it in my minds eye, and really pictured how clean, inviting, and safe it felt.

The tension and build up between the characters was awesome. The fact that Tate put so much heaviness on making sure he had consent? PERFECTION.

Now- why did I not finish the book? Especially since it was great and I’m gushing about the writing and tension and build up?
Well…it’s the “Daddy” kink. I’m pretty easy for pushing lines when it comes to kinks, and often times I am open to reading the most depraved filth known to the human race, but, I cannot get into the Daddy kink. It weirds me out and I can’t do it. I read through the first time it happened, and I read through another chapter, but when the characters mentioned it again, I realized it wasn’t a one-and-done kink that she decided she didn’t like. It was going to be a continued usage through the story.
As much as I *want* to finish the book and the story, because my goodness, I really want to know what happens between them, what Laurel goes through afterward, and how things pick back up again, I don’t have the capacity to change the word or pretend it says something else. I tried to change it in my head, but I couldn’t.
And that makes me sad. This is the second book I’ve ever not finished and I feel like a failure about it, but I can’t do it.

If you’re good or on board with the Daddy kink, this is a great read. The characters are complex, the sexual tension is thick enough to cut through, and the story was going in a great direction.

Definitely a heavier read that requires you to be in the right mindset prior to starting. I enjoyed most of the story but found myself skimming the last quarter or so.
I had a difficult time with the writing; it felt oversimplified and repetitive at times. The sex scenes were good but the daddy kink got old fast and basically every time Laurel said she won’t give in to Tate she does. Lol girl stand up for 5 seconds, please! I get that we need to see that push and pull/internal struggle, but almost every interaction they have ends with them having sex.
There’s also a cheating element-which I don’t usually have a problem with but, Laurel was basically “excused” because her fiancé did some awful things. I feel like it’s a cop out where it’s like “see he’s a bad person so it’s fine”. Honestly, every element of her relationship with Sam felt like a story device to push her towards Tate/show why Tate was a “better”. And I use that term loosely because he didn’t grovel enough (if at all really) for the b.s he pulled ESPECIALLY knowing what Laurel went through during that time.

Starts with Sparks is the angst filled love story I needed!

Tropes:

🔥Second chance romance
🔥Roommates to lovers
🔥Brother’s BFF
🔥Däďdy kïņk
🔥High angst & spice
🔥Firefighter MMC
🔥Other Man drama
🔥Cheating trope (FMC cheats on her partner with MMC, but FMC and MMC never cheat on each other)
🔥Small town
🔥Long timeline

I was so ready for this read and still my heart was taken for a wild ride. I loved the dynamic between Laurel and Tate as they found themselves intertwined after an unlikely fire brought them together. The ease of their relationship brings you in for and throws you for the loop of a lifetime. I laughed, I cried, my heart hurt, and it was absolutely worth every moment. The spice in this book was the cherry on the top of the cake!

Luna has a way of saying the right thing, bringing you to the edge of your seat, and dying to know what happens next! I couldn’t put this book down and can’t wait for the rest of the world to read it ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

This was such an incredible book. It fills you with all the emotions. It's a book that has emotionally charged roommates to lovers, brother's best friend, and second chance romance. Tate and Laurel have been in a relationship for a while when a tragedy tears them apart. They seem to be soulmates in every sense but with Tate gone how will Laurel pick up the pieces of her life? She seeks comfort in her best friend Sam whom she has always had an attraction to. When Tate shows up five years later at her engagement party asking her to not marry her fiancé, she is floored and left with some very hard decisions to face. This book was so good, I couldn't wait to see what happened next. It left me with alot of emotions. There were times where I wanted to slap both Laurel and Tate for being idiots and making horrible decisions but there were also times where I needed a tissue. I highly recommend this book and author and will be reading more from her!

anytime I read a book like this I always expect for it to be sadder and more heart wrenching and it never gives that. that's not a diss to this book, I literally read this in one sitting, and enjoyed it, but the high rating is probably because ive been reading terrible romance books and this was my first good one in awhile. this was a brothers best friends and roommate romance. there was also a guy best friend in the background causing trouble.

basically the fmcs apartment burned down and she moved in with her brothers best friend (who is also a firefighter!!!) they were friendly to flirty to relationship, she got pregnant, but then they got into a fire and he left her hanging completely. she ended up miscarrying but she moved in with her best friend and 5 years later they got engaged.

everything came falling down when her ex came back into town and she found her her now fiancé got a vasectomy even knowing that she wanted to have children. there relationship fell apart and she got back together with her ex (after he apologized a lot) overall, I was very entertained by this book and enjoyed it a lot, would read another book by this author.

✨ starts with sparks ✨

Such a heartbreaking story ❤️‍🩹. This book is about making mistakes , trusting the wrong person and most importantly: Forgiveness .

Starts with sparks started so sweet, reading how Tate and Lauren met and her sweet journey falling into each other was honey for my heart 🫶🏽. And then tragedy came and nothing was the same. Mistakes were made and their life will never be the same.

The second part of the story had my heart bleeding 🥺, Lauren’s suffered such a terrible loss and she went through all by herself that I’m impressed of her resilience.

I really really really wished we got Tate’s pov- I wanted to know what happened with him during and after the accident. We got nothing about his recovery and it WAS highly important to help his cause 👀. He just left her ( he explained why) but for me reading about this healing process could be essential.

I loved the angst- their way back together wasn’t made haste and I appreciate it🖤.

Tate shows up at Laurels Engagement party with one request “Don’t marry him”
The first half of the book follows Laurel and Tate friendship blossom into a very hot (kinky) deeply connected relationship, Tate will do anything to keep Laurel happy and safe. Tragedy then strikes, the second half of the book deals with loss, injuries, heartbreak, lies, hope and so much more…..tissues at the ready. I now want a garden full of sunflowers 🌻
This is also a very spicy 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ read, Tate Brooks has the best the hottest yet sweetest book boyfriend ever!
Please read your trigger warnings before reading this book. It deals with some very emotional topics, I was in tears but honestly because it was described and handled so well.

Well hello "Daddy" although not a kink of mine I can definitely see why this might be for others. I was ready to offer myself up to Tate on a plate!

This book is a spicy delight with an insight to a dom sub relationship which hits all the right places 😏. I loved how Tate and Laurel were not afraid to talk through their desires and find out what worked for them. It's such a fast paced whirlwind romance full of heat and desire.

There is a lot of passion and spice but also there is devastation. This book has some heavy topics and it certainly brought a tear to my eye on a few occasions. It's an emotional rollercoaster so make sure to check your triggers.

This book paces well and captures all the emotions perfectly. I definitely ate it up like a "good girl" 😜.

I would have loved a dual point of view to see what was going through Tates head. Bonus chapter maybe?!

Thank you for the ARC. I look forward to reading some of your other books! 🫶🏻

WOW - Talk about an emotional rollercoaster! This book packs a wallop no doubt about it. It's super hot, explicitly spicy in a way that played into its kinks without giving me any ick, and it twists and turns on a dime giving depth of emotion that had me reading through teary eyes at one point, and outraged on behalf of fictional characters at another. Is the plot a little wild at times, sure, but anyone who can draw me in that deep and make me care that much just reading their story is an easy recommendation for me. If you have sensitivities, you are going to want to check the content warnings on this one, but if you can handle it, going in blind is a ride and a half… As for me, I've added this author's backlist to my TBR without reservation.
Thank you to Book Sirens and Luna Whitney for the ARC opportunity

I don't know if I have the words to express how I feel about this book! We get thrown into a tangled ball of plot that gets unraveled and revealed. The author does an outstanding job of making the reader feel everything Laurel does. It got so frustrating, just like Laurel was feeling. LOL! This book was beautiful in a haunting way. The MMC was a filthy talking, loyal man you cannot help but love and want to smack. The FMC (and therefore the readers) go down a twisty path, waffling between decisions. I was so annoyed with Logan, just like a sibling would be. This book made me cry three times- and I am not a crier. This book is a five star read and I will be thinking about it for a very long time.

My favorite quote:

"I didn’t have to think he was dating potential to think he might have a face worth sitting on."

Since I don't read blurbs, I rarely know what type of book I'm getting in to. I only know "romance" because that's most of what I read. When I cracked this one open, I paused to read the shopping list (aka Content Warning), and thought, welp, this should be a ride. I was correct! 🤣 I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the story, especially because the material was emotionally "heavy". If you are looking for a story that will let you cry and then cause you to look for a partner/BOB, this will be a good fit for you. 🥹🫠

Wow, what an awesome book. This book had claws that reached right into your heart and kept you tethered until the end. The FMC was a strong, independent, feisty woman who falls for the MMC, a firefighter who would give anything for the people he loves. Life and tragedy come between them and it is years before they are reunited. Laurel must get through all her pain before she realizes that she and Tate belong together forever. I highly recommend this book to all romance readers who like a bite of the darker side of life.

This book packs so much more than just a steamy second chance romance into its pages. It’s deliciously salacious, heartbreaking, and swoony. There’s love, loss, lies, and tons of serious steam. I found myself hoping for Tate and Laurel from the start - their highs and lows were captivating and raw.

Read the content warnings! The author did a stunning job putting it out there so protect yourself if needed. The CW includes: accidental pregnancy and miscarriage, controlling and manipulating partner, cheating, and on page kinks that are all spelled out.

If you’re looking for a spicy read to get lost in for a day or two Starts with Sparks is definitely one to explore!

Starts with Sparks by Luna Whitney is a beautiful story about the relationship between firefighter Tate and dance instructor Laurel. It has a well developed plot, the story line is easy to follow and it’s a tear jerking book to read. I couldn’t resist another chapter, every chapter.
There are a few triggers that people should watch for (mention of fire, miscarriage, and cheating) so if those aren’t your favorite, please be careful reading. If you don’t mind/don’t have any triggers, this is the book for you!

“You should be nervous because I’m going to absolutely ruin you, beautiful girl.”

What a whirlwind this book was! I felt as if I was one of Laurel’s friends listening to her recount all of this over drinks. It’s equal parts wholesome and spicy, heartbreaking and shocking. A classic story of right person wrong timing, hence it being a second chance romance. That’s all I’m going to say because you truly have to read it for yourself to experience all of the twists and turns Luna Whitney put into this book. If you want a contemporary romance that’s going to pull at your heart strings, make you gasp, cuss and feel a little hot and bothered this would be the perfect read for you! I read this book and loved it! Then I immediately went back to read it again!! It is still on my mind… What a story and wow amazing chemistry and spice. This MMC is absolutely my top favorite. This gives: meant to be but with lots of twists and turns and excellent angst. The second chance romance in a small town that make this so hard to put down. Steam and spice and the words this man says!! I immediately need more from this author!! Amazing writing by Luna Whitney!!

I loved the first half of the story - the backstory between the MCs was sweet, and I thought they were great together.

Then the second half happened - the more emotional side - and they slowly made their way back into each other's lives, after suffering loss and heartbreak.

I felt like the ending was a bit rushed, especially everything happening in the epilogue, but overall enjoyed the read. I liked both Tate and Laurel, and was just rooting for them to get their HEA.

I hadn't read anything from this author prior to this book, but I'd love to read more!

That prologue sucked me in, I was intrigued by the premise of the hero crashing heroine's engagement party. But second chance romance with much angst is a trying read on the best days for me, and this was heavy. Please check the content guidance first.

The spice was perfect, the hero was the daddiest of daddies. He cooks, he caretakes, he protects. I came for the daddy and breeding kink and was left broken. They're messy and flawed and worked hard for their happy ending.

Thanks to Luna Whitney for the review copy and this is my honest review.

My main recommendation after devouring this book in ONE day is that every gal needs a Tate in their life ;-)

This was such an enjoyable read!! The story moved so swiftly without a lot of unnecessary side story/background characters. AND the SPICE! LORDY!!! It’s been months since I finished a book, so I couldn’t believe it when I was suddenly on the epilogue.

This is so worth the time to read, esp if you want a roommates-to-lovers/firefighter/daddy link/baby kink read
