Paras' book makes use of Foucault's lecture courses in order to show that the later Foucault posits a free subject and rejects his earlier views on power, the book largely ignores material from the later Foucault that contradicts that view. The notion of power as governmentality, which Foucault developed in the late 1970s connects Foucault's discussion of techniques of domination with his later examination of techniques of the self.

Lucidly explains the history of Foucault's thinking. Definitely an engaging text for those already familiar with the primary source and it provides a compelling argument about Foucault and his final thoughts on ethics.
