By Friday, Agents Bishop and Marshall Solve an anything-but-routine burglary. Determine why the house’s previous owner was murdered. Avoid getting killed in the process.
Because on Saturday, Levi and Marsh Keep an overdue promise to their son. Entertain a house full of friends and family. Say “I do” in the wedding their marriage of convenience turned true love deserves.
Marsh and Levi are determined to help a friend in need. But they’re already six months late for a very important date. If they’re not at the altar on time for their Christmas (in July) wedding, they’ll face their most terrifying enemy yet—their teenage son.
Best Play is the fourth book in the M/M romantic suspense series, Perfect Play. This series epilogue novella features Marsh and Levi at their steamy partnership best, as they make their way to the altar a second, forever time.
Layla Reyne is the author of What We May Be and the Agents Irish and Whiskey, Fog City, and Perfect Play series. She writes sexy, intense LGBTQIA+ romance featuring competent adults in kitchens, sports arenas, car chases, and other high-stakes situations. Whether it’s adrenaline-fueled suspense, rival athletes, vampires and shifters in alt-realms, or love mixed with mouth-watering foodie goodness, queer folks finding happily-ever-afters is guaranteed.
This is an absolutely perfect (pun intended) way to sign off on this series.
It has loads of guest appearances from the wider Whiskeyverse but it also sees Marsh and Levi once more declaring their love with a second marriage ceremony and it has a really interesting case as a final flourish.
This series has definitely been a favourite of mine from Layla, both Marsh and Levi are such compelling characters, vastly different in both upbringing and backgrounds, but both with a driving passion for justice and love for those they hold dear.
With this final instalment we get to see just how perfectly Marsh and Levi have melted their lives, their families and their friends together into a supportive unit that is willing to drop everything whenever someone needs help.
The last case we get to see them investigate is an intriguing one and it reveals another secret relationship that I hope we get to find more about in later releases!
I don't think I could have asked for a happier ever after than the one Layla delivers in this book.

"Make no mistake, you own all of me, Levi Bishop, heart and soul."
What a great epilogue novella to give our beloved Marsh and Levi the real wedding they deserved!! It was so nice being with these two again. I loved seeing how happy they were together after everything they went through in the previous books. Even David seems so much happier too. They really have built themselves a wonderful family from what started off as a marriage of convenience.
I enjoyed seeing cameos from old favorites like Brax. Of course he wouldn't miss his old friends wedding! It was adorable the way his and Holt's daughter Lily has bonded to David as well, despite their age difference. And you can definitely tell Lily is a Madigan I'll tell you that!!
I'm so glad the author gave us this little treat of Marsh and Levi to truly solidify their well-deserved HEA.
A good way to end this series! I might not love these books, but I am somewhat addicted to this entire connected universe Layla Reyne has crafted, I really like the characters and I do think I made the best choice by reading all her previous series before starting this one because I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much otherwise.
Now, I am DESPERATE for more Lauren Hall and I need her story one day, and now I have a new need for Matty K’s story… here it hints at something with a rockstar but lowkey I loved him with the hot badass lawyer Gail… is it too much to ask for another poly?? If i can’t have matt and gail…….. then maybe i can have matt gail and the rockstar?? Also… grown up david’s story, this kid was so fun and i love his friendship with Lily!
Marsh and Levi are back, and it is wonderful! Nothing like some mystery, suspense, and crime-solving on a deadline, right?
Best Play is a great way to wrap up this series, with character cameos from the author’s other series and a just-right blend of the case and their relationship. All too often I see authors try to slap together an extra story for an existing couple’s series just trying to eke out one more book as a way to wrap things up, and those tales tend not to have much substance. That certainly isn’t the case here.
Marsh and Levi do have their couple-y moments, but there is plenty of page space devoted to the case they are trying to solve, and it is a solid plot that grabs your attention. The fact that their son has given them a strict deadline for solving the case so it doesn’t interfere with their vows? That’s a nice touch to motivate the guys for sure ;-)
Once we get to the altar though? These two let their emotions out for all to see, and it didn’t feel sappy at all. On the contrary, the first word that came to mind was “heartfelt”, followed quickly after by “genuine”.
While this might be the official wrap-up to Marsh and Levi’s series, I hope we’ll see more of them in supporting roles in this author’s future books. 5 stars for Best Play!
What a wonderful novella! So the first thing you need to know is that Perfect Play is one of my favorite series and Layla Reyne is one of my favorite authors. This novella could have just been a lot of cutesy scenes of Marsh and Levi with a smattering of David and I would have been totally thrilled. But that would be expecting too little and I know better. Instead, I got the cute and the steamy and a mini mystery that, honestly, I would have read a full-length novel about.
One of the best things about Layla's books is that they're interconnected and characters from one series often make appearances in others. This one was no exception. Pretty much the whole gang was there (I was missing Hawes and Chris, but I can live with that) and having Jamie's presence bring Press back into things was unexpectedly wonderful. I'm going to be vague here to avoid spoilers, but I'd really love a book about Press in the future. Maybe Luis, too. Definitely Matty K (with Cam-eos, of course--yes, I went there). But what I'd really like? A ten-ish years in the future book about David. Seriously, give me adult David getting into trouble with Lily still as a sidekick and the old guard trying to keep up. I *need* it.
ANYWAY. My point is, this novella was a wonderful addition to the series and I can't wait to see what Layla writes next!
Trigger Warnings include: off-page death of a former spouse; mentions of PTSD, anxiety, depression, and past suicide attempt of an off-page character, FBI cases/activities
It felt so bittersweet getting to be back in this world! I love this series SO much! So getting to say goodbye an extra time was everything! Romantic suspense isn’t usually something I lean towards, but this series is SO much more than that! And I am SO glad I decided to read it! It is absolutely a favorite of mine! For starters, it’s a marriage of convenience, and you KNOW I can’t say no to that! And this beautiful family?! Found, chosen, and blood, it just makes me so dang happy! This epilogue novella was a proper goodbye, and I loved every second of it! And it wouldn’t be Marsh and Levi without them working the week of their vow renewals!
My Favorite Quotes: • “Jesus f!ck.” “Haven’t we been over this? Not Jesus, just Marsh.” • “I love you.” “You love my c!ck.” “That too.” • “Open your eyes. I want you to see us come.” • “I knew you were the one the minute I laid eyes on you, and not just because you look like a f!cking pinup model.” • “I will always bring my heart home to you.” • “As much as I love this, I’d love to f!ck my husband more.” • “Make no mistake, you own all of me, heart and soul. I will do whatever it takes to earn every one of your yeses.”
Such a good author. Such a nice series. So good, in fact, I started re-reading the Irish and Whiskey book and finished it before realizing something is not right, finding this series, got so bored and frustrated with the audiobook I skipped to reading then skipped through the snooze-case of drama that was the detective story so I can enjoy the grand finale. Never even realized the side characters in Perfect Play are the main characters of that first book. Ups? Such nice books. So... forgettable. Or was it unforgettable?
Sigh.
I like the author well enough but some books are better when you only read them once and reading back through this makes me thoroughly tired from all the dramatic proclamations and problems. I wanted to see more of David who joined the ever-expanding ranks of "which character can we make queer next?"
This is mostly a nostalgia medley. You have characters from Fog city, you have the aforementioned Jamie and ball player (or was Jamie the ball player?) and you have this chess puns are the best and never ever get old series. If you like all the previous characters, you will get misty eyed from seeing them together and being happy and laughing and affirming just how happy they are. And repeating just how lucky and happy they are and why. You can probably tell I did not get misty-eyed.
But it was otherwise nice, the case even got wrapped up fairly nicely, the whole side story was nicely short and "down-to-earth" /simple and relevant and just added a nice, subtle zing to what was otherwise just an ode to mushy love and sex.
This is part of a series, and must be read in order.
I loved watching Marsh and Levi from their beginning, and seeing their HEA make my heart happy. I melted when they got married again, this time for love rather than convenience. Layla does such a good job weaving suspense with the love storyline, she has me hooked for being to end.

Best Play is THE perfect novella giving us fans of Emmitt Marsh and Levi Bishop a bit more of their happily ever after. With plenty of cameos from well-loved characters from other books in this universe, Layla Reyne wrote exactly what I was craving from these two lawmen.
And what's great is that there is plenty of steam between our guys combined with a case they are brought into when they should be taking the week off before their wedding. I loved that they had a chance to fit in this case to help out good friends and yet also enjoyed all the family coming to visit. Levi and Marsh also managed some passionate trysts while excited to say their vows again and cherish the ceremony they should have had the year before.
Overall, it's a great conclusion yet it's also a wonderful continuation of this series with a few other characters featured who will ultimately need their HEA as well. And for me, Marsh and Levi will forever be a fave of mine and the way Layla Reyne has told their story and now with giving us this incredible proverbial cherry on top, I honestly can't wait to see what she has in store for us next.
Best Play is the last installment in the Perfect Play series, which was supposed to be a duet, then a trilogy, and now has turned into a series, not that I'm complaining. I absolutely love Marsh and Levi and every time Jamie/Aidan, Brax/Holt and little Lily, and other characters from the Whiskey-verse appear in a book is always a great thing.
This was more like an extended epilogue with an interesting case that brought back some old and new faces that will hopefully star in their own books, since I was left wanting more of Pres and Farmer, and even Luis, who was amazing in Best Play.
Levi and Marsh were amazing as always, the chemistry between them was scorching and I just adore them with David. It was great getting to see them marry again, for real this time.
Overall, a fantastic read that I can't recommend enough, just start with Dead Draw, book 1. You won't regret it.

As much as I didn't want this series to end, Best Play is the "perfect" way to end this series! I have adored getting to know (Emmitt) Marshall and Levi (Bishop), as well as all their friends, co-workers and family. David Bishop, son of Levi, is really a third main character, for me at least, because we have seen him grow so much in the the short period of time that Marsh and Levi have been together. Naturally, one last case before getting (re) married is to be expected for this pair. It has a twist two that may show up in a later book, but is also filled with great secondary characters from this series and earlier ones. This is not the book to want to read as a stand-alone. Start with Dead Draw, if you are new to these smart and sexy men, and enjoy their journey from marriage of convenience to true love. If you've read other books by Layla Reyne, you'll see familiar characters sprinkled about the pages. Or, you might then want expand to additional series from here. I adored this (what I guess I'm calling) extra long epilogue in novella form.
Best Play is a novella that serves as an extended epilogue for Marsh and Levi from Layla Reyne’s excellent Perfect Play series. This one is best read by fans of the series and serves as a delicious treat for those of us who love Levi and Marsh. I loved the full circle moment that a year after their first wedding, which was nothing more than a marriage of convenience, the guys are now getting married again, this time with their whole hearts involved. This one is nicely mushy, romantic, and sexy, giving us a chance to see how much these men have come to love one another. The story is really a celebration of their relationship and it is clear how much they care about one another.
If you are a fan of this series, I think this is a must read. And for new folks, it is a great time to check out this series from the start.
A novella at the end of a series tends be more of an extended epilogue, with the author giving readers a sneak peek into the future and highlighting the happily-ever-after that the main characters are living. Layla Reyne, however, has gone above and beyond. Best Play may be a novella in terms of length, and yes, they're basking in all that HEA goodness, but Reyne has penned a fitting finale for husbands and federal agents Levi Bishop and Emmitt Marshall--and their teenaged son, David--offering up the very same romance and suspense that she packed the three full-length novels--Dead Draw, Bad Bishop, and King Hunt--in the Perfect Play series. Oh, and an absolute bonus for Reyne's readers is that there are some cameos from familiar, well-loved characters from some of the author's other series and books too!
Levi Bishop and Emmitt Marshall may not have married for love a year ago, but there's no denying just how much love they have for each other and those who matter most to them. Renewing their vows was something they wanted to do for themselves and for their family and friends who supported them throughout. They were counting the days...but then a burglary that seemed like there was more to it than meets the eye came along. Wanting to help in any way they can, Levi and Marsh just have to make sure that this case is solved before their Christmas wedding (in July) or risk the wrath of their dear son, David.
I'm seriously going to miss Levi and Marsh, although I wouldn't be surprised if these two pop up in a future book or two from Layla Reyne, but I love that they were given an ending that encompassed who they were as a couple and their dedication to their personal and professional lives. Who says you can't have it all? Trying to figure out what was really behind the burglary wasn't a secondary thing; in short, that balance between romance and suspense was ever present, Reyne ensuring not to sacrifice one for the other. Seeing how far Levi and Marsh have come and the family and friends that they've surrounded themselves does my heart good, especially given how emotionally invested I was. Five stars for Best Play!
"Take this ring as a promise that I will always bring my heart home to you."
This companion novella to the Perfect Play series is a delightful read. Levi Bishop and Emmitt Marshall are delivering on their promise to their son, David. Days before the renewal of their wedding-vows, with family and friends all getting together, they stumble upon a new case. The ensuing antics are enjoyable, and with the help of their extensive network of LEO-friends, they manage to solve the case and, to the relief of their son, the wedding planner, make it to their wedding just in time.
The ceremony, officiated by Sean was the perfect blend of laughs, tears and vows, witness by their son, good friends and loving families.
What a wonderful conclusion to what must be my most favorite series by Layla.
Marsh and Levi's marriage started out as one of convenience but turned into a very deep love. Together they found a way to make things work despite of their difference in background. Through their job they grew closer and Levi's son made them a complete family.
They're about to renew their vows in front of family and friends but of course things don't just turn out simple. They've got one more case to solve, to help a friend in need.
We get to see lots of characters from her previous book which made the story even better, all of them ready to jump in and help solve the case so that Marsh and Levi made it on time to keep the promise they made to their son David: getting married on Friday.
What a wonderful happy ending for this super couple!
*ARC kindly received by Neon Rainbow Reviews. This is my honest opinion.*
Well this was a great conclusion to this series, I have really loved Marsh and Levi from the beginning and I felt like this was the ending they all truly deserved. (Even if it is hard to say goodbye to this group!) This was the perfect combination of romance and mystery, just what I’ve come to expect from these guys. It seems fitting that even as Marsh and Levi are finally getting the real wedding they deserve another case is dropped in their laps, and of course they can’t resist.
I really thought this was a fun addition and a great way to pull everything together to give Marsh and Levi and of course David too the happiness they deserve. It made me smile and swoon and left my heart so happy – which is exactly what I’ve wanted for these two right from the start. There’s also a great surprise couple thrown in that I absolutely adored *chefs kiss*! This is definitely a must read series and this is the perfect conclusion!
I really enjoyed this as a way of signing off on Marsh and Levi's HEA with a proper wedding and lots of appearances from secondary characters. It gave me everything I loved about them together - smoking hot chemistry, a great work dynamic and some super sweet romantic bits too. I liked how they had a case to work alongside the wedding count down and thought it was interesting without taking over the build up to the ultimate HEA. David was a sweetheart as usual and it was just such a feel good read after all the ups and downs they've had in the series. I hope we get to see more appearances of these guys in future stories set in this world. If you haven't read the series yet then I definitely recommend it; this book won't work as a standalone. Overall, a great story with the perfect HEA for them.
What a brilliant novella for fans of the Perfect Play series! Having more of Levi, Marsh and David has made me very happy :-) This book perfectly brings together all parts of the series into one story that showcases how well suited Levi and Marsh are together, a good mystery for them to solve, albeit on a tight schedule, and just how well David has come on since we met a grieving teenager in book one. There is also the found family element as so many of their work colleagues and friends come together for both their upcoming wedding (Christmas in July!) and to help solve the case of a break in of a well known sports star. Love, definite heat and an intriguing mystery to keep you thinking through to the end. Highly recommended for those who have enjoyed Levi and Marsh's tough road to their HEA. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
I loved Levi and Marsh getting their HEA and marrying again. I thought this was a good mix of a mystery to solve, and everyone coming together to help with not only the case but celebrating family.
I loved how everyone from the author’s extended universe came together to ensure Levi and Marsh make it to the altar. I loved the family feel and the banter, and I need to catch up on the series I’m way behind on, although I followed who everyone was without any trouble. I also loved David’s part in the story, and how far he and Marsh have come since they first met.
I loved how all the pieces of the mystery came together with a good sized mix of romantic suspense.
I thought the story gave a satisfying conclusion to Levi and Marsh’s series, although I’m hoping we haven’t seen the last of them.
Oh man, this is everything I wanted from Marsh and Levi's epilogue novella - Perfect Play played perfectly!!
Best Play gives us a great ride along as our favourite cowboy and his husband prepare for their second wedding (the for real one) amid the chaos of friends and family, and a time sensitive investigation. Yes, certain members of the family are heaping on the pressure to wrap up the case before the big day.
Cameos from around the Whiskeyverse add that layer of found family that I love and there's also a tease for a future series, maybe…
I love these wonderful characters and, as well as being hot hot hot, there's so much sweetness as Marsh and Levi exchange their vows. OK, I'm going to need a series re-read now. 5*
An ARC was provided by the author. This is my honest review.
#3.5 in series (Perfect Play), a novella epilogue, must be read in order. Quick read. Established couple.
Levi and Marsh are planning their second wedding, this time attended by family and friends. With a side investigation to help out a friend, the countdown to their wedding is filled with a last minute adventure as they try to solve a burglary and possible murder. This couple is one of my favorites (although Layla Reyne has a few at the top of my list), the fake relationship morphing into love and the found family as strong as ever. A touch of spice, a little romance, some family bonding, and some law enforcement action round out this fun finale as Levi and Marsh get their special wedding and HEA.
What an absolutely perfect way to celebrate Marsh and Levi (and David and friends). I adore these two so much, the love they have and the family they’ve formed. And I cannot wait for more David as I need to see him beat Marsh at chess, and find his own happiness.
“Make no mistake, you own all of me, Levi Bishop, heart and soul. I will do whatever it takes to earn every one of your yeses.”
I would say yes to Levi and Marsh in less than a heartbeat, along with anyone in the extended Whiskyverse! A puzzling mystery to kick off the celebrations, fun and chaotic family times, and friends we didn’t know we needed, I’m holding my breath that we’ll get more from the pieces at play. With all that, my heart is happy that Marsh has his forever love and heart that found its home.
This is the first book I have read by Layla Reyne and although I really enjoyed Best Play I think I would have loved it had I read the previous books in this series. I will be going back to start the Perfect Play Series from the beginning and I will re read Best Play at that time. I was captivated from the first page to the last line and this novella may be a quick read but it stills packs a mighty punch. This is Marsh and Levi’s steamy MM, romantic suspense story and it’s the conclusion to their fake to real love story. This is an entertaining, steamy, witty and well written read that has left me excited to read the previous books in this series as well as checking out other works by this very talented author.
If you haven’t read this series, then you must!! FBI, cowboy, fake marriage, high stakes cases, awesome teenager…must I go on?!?!
This novella is the swoony happy ever of one of my most favourite couples. But of course, they have a case to solve before they walk down the aisle (for real this time!).
The love they have built and the family they’ve created (found and blood) make them utterly fantastic as partners at work and in life.
If you have read this series, then you’re in for a treat.
This quick read was a great read for us to see the HEA for March and Levi that they deserved - a wedding that was actually surrounded by their family. The unfortunate thing for this pair is that they must solve a crime before their wedding. With the clock ticking to get their current case solved, the pair while works hard to get answers while also continuing their life together as their attraction has yet to fade.
I enjoyed the return of characters from previous series to this story as a means to touch base with them. I also enjoyed the return to Levi and Marsh so that we the reader can see that they really did get all that they deserved.
Overall, this was a great read even though it was short that I would recommend to others.
This book is a novella that serves as the epilogue to the Perfect Play series, bringing a satisfying conclusion to the romantic suspense saga of Marsh and Levi. This book has been highly praised for its blend of steamy romance and thrilling suspense, as it follows the couple to their second, forever wedding. The characters are celebrated for their compelling dynamics, with backgrounds that add depth to their partnership. The novella also ties up a final case that promises intrigue and the potential for future stories. Fans of the series appreciate the way this author weaves together the lives, families, and friends of the protagonists into a cohesive and supportive unit. The book is noted for delivering a perfect mix of love, action, and a happily ever after.
I loved reading about Levi and Marsh again! This book is the perfect ending to the Perfect Play series. The blurb pretty much says it all. It's a quick read with lots of cameos from the "Wiskeyverse." Marsh and Levi work with other familiar characters to solve a case before their re-wedding day. They only have a few days but they make it happen.
I've read all of the Perfect Play books but not the earlier books in this "world" and now I really want to read them so I can know more about the characters who help Levi and Marsh celebrate their special day.
An advanced copy of this book was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.
Levi and Marsh, initially drawn to each other by circumstance, ultimately discover deep love and compatibility. Married for convenience but bound by genuine affection, their journey unfolds amidst their harmonious professional collaboration. As they prepare to renew their vows surrounded by loved ones, including their amusing son, their happiness is interrupted by a new challenge: solving crimes to aid a friend. Supported by loyal friends, they embark on an adventure filled with witty banter, thrilling danger, and passionate moments. This installment delivers a satisfying conclusion to their intense love story, promising more excitement to come from this talented author.
This series is one of my all-time favorites and Best Play is the perfect way to end it. Short, but not too short. Sweet but not too sweet.
I love the ensemble cast that brings together so many beloved characters from previous books. I love the way Layla Reyne weaves a case into Marsh and Levi's wedding story. I love David. Full stop. I need him to have his own story.
I'm going to have to schedule a reread of Layla's Whiskeyverse, Fog City, What We May Be, and Perfect Play series start to finish. I just love the way she combines action and adventure with heat and romance.
