About the author

The Belgian author Morris (full name Maurice de Bevere) is best known for his humorous cowboy character, Lucky Luke. Morris started his career in 1945 in Le Moustique, creating various covers and illustrations. By the end of the 1940s, Morris met his colleagues Jijé, Franquin and Will. These four artists would be called "The Gang of 4", because they all worked in Jijé's studio at that time. The first episode of Lucky Luke, 'Arizona 1880', was published in L'Almanach Spirou 1947, and was later continued in Spirou. In his early 'Lucky Luke' comics, Morris was greatly inspired by animated cartoons à la Disney.
In 1949, Jijé took Morris and Franquin to the US, where Morris met Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman, whom he helped with their plans for Mad Magazine. He also met René Goscinny in the US. In 1955, Morris returned to Europe and collaborated with René Goscinny on 'Lucky Luke'. Goscinny wrote the scenarios of over 35 stories, which led to the great success of the series.

Lucky Luke geht auf die Bretter

Also, nicht nur auf die, die die Welt bedeuten, sondern in gewisser Weise leider auch auf die anderen, die seitlings von drei oder vier Seilen umspannt werden, denn in seinem Abenteuer Der weiße Kavalier läuft er nicht annähernd zu der Hochform auf, die wir bei Zusammenarbeiten von Morris und Goscinny von ihm gewohnt sind.

Unser Cowboy trifft in diesem Abenteuer auf eine Truppe von fahrenden Schauspielern, die sich dem Melodrama verschrieben haben und von Stadt zu Stadt tingeln, um die Geschichte vom Weißen Kavalier zum besten zu geben – und dabei gleichzeitig die Stadt auszurauben. Lucky Luke, der in dem Nest Nothing Gulch zum ersten Mal einer Vorstellung der Truppe beiwohnt und dessen alter Kumpel Hank Wallys Hauptopfer des Banküberfalls wird, riecht recht früh Lunte und beschließt, der Schauspieltruppe zu ihrem nächsten Spielort nach Miner’s Pass zu folgen. Im Laufe der Ereignisse muß er selbst in der Rolle des Weißen Kavaliers auf die Bühne, wo er unter ziemlich starkem Lampenfieber leidet, er bemerkt zu seinem Leidwesen, daß auch Minenarbeiter sich für einen Theaterabend in Schale werfen, und zu allem Überfluß lenken die wahren Missetäter den Verdacht und den Zorn der von ihnen Beraubten auf ihn, womit sie ihn zwingen, sich durch einen wirklich listigen Trick – dies ist leider auch einer der wenigen Höhepunkte dieses Bandes – aus dem Gefängnis zu befreien und vor dem Galgen zu retten.

Gerade das Thema einer fahrenden Schauspielertruppe hätte sicher mehr Möglichkeiten für zündenden Humor geboten, doch leider fiel der Theaterdirektor Whittaker vornehmlich durch seinen gekünstelten Tonfall auf, was beim Lesen sogar nervte, während alle anderen Schauspieler eher blaß blieben. Kurzum, wenn unser Cowboy nach getaner Arbeit hier in die untergehende Sonne reitet, ist man nicht geneigt, ihm ein Da Capo zuzurufen.

The problem with this sort of mysteries is that the real villain is usually very easy to tell by the art style: sharp, pronounced, suspiciously-eyed folks.

Also, Luke didn't actually get to play the lead role as often as I was led to believe. Shame.

Esta es la aventura dónde he visto a Lucky Luke con el más diverso rango de emociones y reacciones. Luke aquí se ve alegre, preocupado, triste, asustado, decepcionado, enojado y nervioso.

Morris se superó a sí mismo con su trabajo de luces y sombras, y el diseño de los diferentes pueblos aquí visitados fueron únicos en sus maneras. Una parte me recordó a la Mina de Oro de Dick Digger. Y no es la respuesta obvia.

Me pareció bastante ingenioso el hecho de que los adversarios se adaptaban a las estrategias que Luke implementa. Y desde luego, la comedia es oro puro.

Salah satu kisah Lucky Luke yang terbaik. Walaupun sejarah teater di daerah Barat yang Liar memang ada, namun kisah misteri perampokan yang menyertai setiap penampilan teater itu membuat pembaca tetap membaca komik ini sampai akhir. Dialog khas koboi pun lebih menonjol di komik ini.

Tiyatro ayağına gittikleri her kasabadaki bankaları patlatan grup bilin bakalım kimin kucağına düşer? Tabii ki düldülün ve Red Kit'in! Temposu biraz düşüktü fakat sonuca gidene kadar ilerleyişi güzeldi. Vahşi batıda para kazanmak onu saklamak kadar zordur.

Πάντα ήθελα να διαβάσω αυτό το κόμικ όταν ήμουν μικρός (με ιντρίγκαρε η λευκή αμφίεση του Λούκυ Λουκ στο εξώφυλλο), αλλά δεν τα κατάφερα. Κάλλιο αργά παρά ποτέ λοιπόν και η ιστορία τα σπάει φυσικά.

"Along with saloon girl, rodeos and hangings, theatre has its place among the western entertainments." Lucky luck meets White Walker Baltimore theatrical company and receives a free ticket to their show, "The dashing white cowboy", set to play in Nothing Gulch. During the play, the bank has been robbed and lucky luck decides to follow the Baltimore group to the Miner's pass, where they're booked to play next.

Reactions of the "unsophisticated public, not very skilled at distinguishing between myth and reality" during the plays, cursings and calling words as a funny habit and yet another great storyline from Morris, makes this one of my favorites in the series. After all, it's a lucky luck adventure and we know how creative René can be in different situations.

this is definitely one of the funniest of the series, with Lucky Luke being an interesting character for a change. Still seemed as funny as when I first read it, 40 years ago
