TWO YEARS after helping Verano survive the genetic curse planted by a powerful entity called the Manmutt, a perilous history once again finds the crew of the Mariposa. This time the Manmutt have targeted Earth itself. A trap has been set somewhere no-one would ever think look. Selby Ricks, Amy Maaz and friends must travel to the past to stop a timeline set in motion over five hundred years ago by Manmutt leader, Taven. But this time they are on their own. The Galactic ranger known as Captain wouldn’t be there to help when time runs out.
Book II of the Verano series is another fast-paced adventure story from Ken Helfer, winner of the B.R.A.G Medallion award for the first book in the series, The Saving of Verano. Come explore the future to find out if it is a dystopian nightmare, or if instead, humanity will achieve the long sought after goals of peace and prosperity for all.
Pathways in Time by Ken Helfer presents an enthralling plot that grips readers with its high-stakes time-travel adventure. The narrative picks up two years after the conclusion of the first book in the series, thrusting the crew into a new, even more perilous mission to prevent the Manmutt from altering Earth’s timeline. The stakes are incredibly high, with the Manmutt setting a trap in a time period no one would think to look, forcing the crew to navigate a complex historical landscape set in motion over five centuries ago.
The strength of Pathways in Time lies in its imaginative and intricate plot. The storyline is undeniably engaging, filled with unexpected twists and turns that keep readers on the edge of their seats. The concept of traveling back in time to alter a timeline is executed with creativity, making a compelling read that science fiction enthusiast will appreciate.
However, while the plot is the novel’s strongest asset, the pacing and character development leave much to be desired. The story moves at breakneck speed, often rushing through key events and transitions. This rapid pacing makes it challenging to fully immerse oneself in the world the author has created, as there is little time to absorb the gravity of the crew’s mission or intricacies of their journey.
Moreover, the characters lack the depth needed to foster a genuine connection with readers. Selby Ricks, Amy Maaz, and their companions, despite being central to the story, are not given enough development to make them truly relatable. Their motivations, backgrounds, and personalities are only superficially explored, which detracts from the emotional impact of their struggles and triumphs.
Pathways in Time offers an excellent plot that promises excitement and intrigue but falls short in pacing and character development. The novel’s fast pace and underdeveloped characters hinder its potential, making it a somewhat frustrating read. Nonetheless, fans of high-concept science fiction with a penchant for time travel may still find enjoyment in the story’s inventive premise and thrilling moments.
This is a short time travel adventure that kept me interested right from the beginning. I hadn't read the first in this series and it took some time to get into this world but I'm glad I did. It has an original plot that moved right along and promises more adventures in the future.
