An action-packed tale of power and revenge, The Curse of Ophidia is a compelling slow burn romantasy perfect for fans of The Serpent and the Wings of Night and Trial of the Sun Queen.
“Don’t you dare forget who I am and what I can do.”
A queen
Three years after Tamariya Amunet inherited a blood soaked crown, her grasp on the throne is weak, her kingdom struggles to rebuild, and her advisors grapple for power. Preoccupied with the disappearance of her magic, a gift that could bring the entire kingdom to heel, Tamariya nearly overlooks a rebellion brewing right under her nose. As she uncovers a sinister plot to destroy magic in the realm, the Queen of Naqad takes matters into her own hands to quash the force threatening her reign.
A prince
Caryk Cazaar, the striking, brooding Prince of Etrusca, seeks the hand of the queen, despite his apparent loathing of the monarch. The prince is a thorn in Tamariya’s side, challenging her every move and sticking his nose where it does not belong, namely in her midnight trysts with her longtime lover. But as conspiracies blossom, Caryk’s presence at court transforms from irritating to ominous.
A Viper
Ophidians are real, and they’re just as terrifying as the bedtime stories imply. The cabal of fae-like serpent shifters steal the most powerful mage children and induct them into their order. Their leader, the notorious Viper Queen, is rumored to be at the heart of the plot to destroy magic, that is, any magic that she cannot control. Tamariya must stop the Viper Queen and save the mages, lest their gifts will be lost for good, forcing Naqad into permanent destitution.
An incredible start for debut author Victoria Black. A lifelike cast of characters with whip smart dialogue and plenty of action (and romance!) to keep readers on their toes. I cannot wait to get my hands on the rest of this trilogy!!
Okay but seriously I didn’t want to put this down. Magic system is very unique and mysterious…totally different than anything else I’ve read..really loved the FMC and her journey of asserting herself in a world surrounded by men who want to control her…really excited to read more in this series and see where it’s gonna go
Wouldn’t have picked this up as it’s far from my usual read, but I know the author personally so I wanted to support. What a joy to read something out of the norm and to have had the story be so wonderfully written, easy to under and comprehend this fantasy world and to enjoy it as much as I did. Looking forward to book 2!
Thank you @victoriablack_books for including me in your ARC team.
There were so many things that I loved about this book. The first thing that stood out to me was the mannerisms of the characters, every action felt so natural and real! There have been so many times that I am reading through a scene and a character does something that just doesn’t seem to fit the moment and I never felt that throughout this story. I also loved the foreshadowing that is found throughout. The plot twists and reveals, while still shocking, never felt like they came out of nowhere. I loved being able to think back and remember bits and pieces that lead up to this point. I felt like I was figuring things out right along with Tamariya. The pace of the story was refreshing as well, instead of drawing it out for weeks or months, the story takes place over a matter of about a week, so there is not a lot of unnecessary downtime. I did not want to put it down.
Wow, where to start? I can honestly say that The Curse of Ophidia is one of the BEST fantasy books that I have ever read. Every word gripped me by the throat from the get go. It was instantly all consuming, enchanting and mesmerising. The way that Black writes is truly enthralling. I was hanging on every word and turning every page so fast! I simply could not put this book down. I absolutely devoured it. This is totally one of those stories where you completely forget you're reading and it takes something monumental to pull you back to reality.
You're immediately thrown into this gorgeous world, with seamless and unnoticeable world building. Everything has it's place and reason that left me fully understanding where, why and how things were happening, which sometimes is a bit of a struggle in the first book of a trilogy. (I cannot wait to read the next 2 books!)
Onto the FMC, who was not just a queen, but a badass one at that. She's a fire mage and a strong willed warrior who will not let her royal status get in the way of fighting with and for her people. She is morally grey, which I absolutely loved! Her decisions were sometimes questionable but also made perfect sense from her character. I love how she constantly fought between following the guidance of her council and also doing what she believed was best for her people.
The slow burn was completely faultless, with both love interests having pros and cons. It was seriously a "I'm team Edward... No wait I'm team Jacob... No wait I'm-" moment!! (P.S I love the constant description of Marcus' eye colour, it made him so dreamy and vivid in my imagination.)
And of course I have to add an honourable mention to the fact that 2 of the main side characters were LGBTQ!!!! I was seriously so happy to find a book with strong female characters who aren't all young and in need of saving, but who actually had some wicked battle experience, are middle aged and were dating!! Amazing.
If you love shifters, mages, witches and warlocks, high fantasy court politics, twists and turns, betrayal and not knowing who to trust, two love interests, a magical realm, flawless flashbacks, warrior princesses and feminine rage, then I cannot recommend this book enough.
I cannot recommend this book enough! It was fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat, not to mention got me out of the biggest reading slump I’ve ever been in.
I’m also a sucker for great dedications and the author did not disappoint with this. “For anyone who knows what it’s like to be spoken over. I hope you reclaim your power.”
The story follows the young queen, Tamariya, on her quest to hold onto her power and make sure the Mages stay safe within her kingdom. The humans are convinced the ominous Viper Queen is responsible for the death and destruction, but Tamariya knows there is something else going on. Along the way she also finds herself in a love triangle with her childhood love and the prince she is supposed to marry.
Tropes and Themes: Enemies to Lovers Slow Burn Romance Mild Spice Epic Quests Morally Grey FMC Feminine Rage MMC with Captain Hook Vibes Love Triangle Power and Revenge
Highly recommend especially if you are a fan of Carissa Broadbent and Nisha J. Tuli. I also think if you were a fan of Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas you’d love this book!
*I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC copy of this book*
Thank you so much Victoria Black for choosing me to be apart of your ARC team:) Trigger warnings: violence, death, sexual content, descriptions of war, torture. Tropes: love triangle (nothing to major), epic quests, feminine rage, revenge, power struggle, slow burn, morally grey FMC. I loved that I could tell by the first few pages of the book that this wasn’t about to be the usual fantasy read where a badass princess turns into a queen somehow and then she somehow finds out she has powers of some kind. No, this book was different. It starts off with our badass queen already ruling, there’s mentions of a past war and you eventually figure out she’s in a very intricate power struggle while there’s a rebellion brewing and something mysterious going on with her magic. Each time I thought I knew what was going to happen next, I was wrong. Right away I had SO many questions and by the end most of them answered, and now I have some new questions because I really wasn’t expecting what went down in the end. I’m so excited to read book 2!!
I was excited to receive an arc for this book and enjoyed reading every moment of it!
Star rating: 4 Stars
Tropes: Enemies to Lovers Slow Burn Romance Morally Gray FMC Love Triangle
A cursed Queen must grapple the crumbling of her kingdom and is forced to marry another kingdom Prince in order to save it. However, said Prince becomes her enemy when secrets are revealed about her past and who she really is. But when corruption from her advisors happens everything falls apart and she is reminded of who she really is.
I enjoyed reading this book a lot and gave it 4 stars, because it had that enemies to lovers troupe with the slow burn romance we all love. Victoria kept me on my toes with each turn of the page as I wasn't sure what to expect on the next page! I love when the author keeps me guessing like that and some of them I wasn't ready for! I can't wait to see what happens next and what Tamariya must fight for!
Review soon to come, but this is a great new debut novel by an indie author and you should definitely check it out!!
Update: There’s nothing I love more than a great FMC and this book EXCELLED in that regard. Tamariya is a straight badass, really the whole trio of female leads was badass and powerful and I love that for us. The concept of the viper and their powers and ruthlessness were so unique and compelling.
The ladies are CARRYING in this book, but throw in a mysterious angry prince and a life long star crossed lover and there is great set up here and I can tell so much more to come. The banter is bantering and I love the bonding magic in this series.
Overall, this was just so well done with so many little details included that added so much to the story. If you like politics, war, deceit, betrayal, an MMC shrouded in mystery and also another guy, you’ll love this book. I truly can’t wait to see where this series goes!!
A fascinating, dark, enchanting tale, one with as many fangs and twists as a serpent itself. Tamariya is a morally grey FMC done right - one full of both compassion and rage, in constant battle with two halves of her mind. The plot twist slowly creeps up on you, as the plot and lore are unveiled piece by piece. I especially love enemies-to-lovers with "your enemy isn't actually your enemy and everything you know is a lie". And this is TRUE enemies-to-lovers with a slowww burn - they still mostly dislike each other at the end of this book, although less than in the beginning.
I'd definitely recommend this for fans of:
- Morally grey FMC full of feminine rage - Enemies to lovers with a slowww burn - Lots of plot twists and turns - Strong female friendships - Court politics/intrigue - Really unique worldbuilding
This was such a great debut novel!!! Congrats to Victoria Black 🖤 💚 -The first couple of chapters didn't quite catch me. But the 3rd or 4th chapter was a flashback pov, and she got me. -ACTION PACKED -I didn't see the twist coming with *redacted*. -The "bonding" for marriage was suuuuch an interesting and fresh concept. -Some bits of it felt like very novice writing. There were words used a lot of times within one or two chapters, then we never saw those words again. I think they could have been put on shuffle a little better, you know? Spread throughout the book a little better. -THE ENDING!! I'm so excited to see what happens next!!
A standout in the fantasy novel genre AND a slow-burn romance that felt like an uphill battle (and just the beginning of it, too! My favorite kind of pacing). World building is a hard thing to do well in fantasy, and I really enjoyed the use of flashbacks to build out our understanding of both Tamariya and her rule as queen. First person perspective is also fun in this because who doesn’t love the chaos that ensues in the final act from an unreliable narrator??? Cannot wait for the next book of the trilogy and will definitely reread this before long to see what details I catch on the second read!
Thank you Victoria for the chance to receive this ARC!
For one, can we talk about the aesthetics this paints for you?! I loved every second of this book. I love the pace, the action, the storyline. It was all just so whimsical and beautiful. Victoria really knows how to immerse you in her story in such a short amount of time.
Tamariya is a badass for knowing what she wants and going for it. Accepting a marriage proposal for convenience when they didn’t even like each other?? Sign me up yesterday!
The twists, the corruption, the tropes!! I loved it all!
an absolutely enthralling debut novel of a female warrior reclaiming the power for herself. with both compassion and rage, queen tamariya was such a captivating main character to follow throughout this story. the seamless world building and strong side characters made it so easy to lose track of time reading. as a slow burn girly, the love interest(s) had me in a chooookehold!!! i am beyond ready to continue this storyline!
ARC review: I gave it 3 ⭐️ only because I wanted just a little more. It might be because I came off of finishing ACOTAR and was jumping into a completely different world with this book. I did love the twists and the story development towards the end of the book. This is also going to be a 3 book series so I had to keep that in mind as well. I will say I’m excited for the next ones and how this story develops with the main characters!
This is a debut book from this author and when I say it will have you feeling every single emotion! One of my favorite things is a fierce strong female main character, and although it took Ry a minute to get there it was well worth the wait. The reality is, it can sometimes take us all a minute to get there. I would recommend this book a million times! I would like to thank the author for the signed copy and to say I can not wait for the next book!
The story was paralleled to a Game of Thrones setting, in which realms fought together for a common purpose. There were plenty of twists and turns, as well as character development. I personally did not feel connected to the characters, which is why this rating is 3.5 stars for me. Some of the character conflicts felt slightly redundant, although the book itself was well-written. For a first novel, it is quite impressive.
Okay I was immediately interested in this book just from the concept alone because hello, serpent shifters sound cool as fuck. Turns out that was absolutely correct because I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was hooked immediately and never looked back. I thought the world building was done really well, where it would throw you in for a taste and then back up and explain. The plot development was a little slow, likely due to the expansive world building, but it was never slow enough to lose any interest. The author has a great writing style, and the FMC was a badass who showed absolutely zero mercy, which I am here for 100%. There’s angst all over the place which is always a plus for me, and the friendship and banter were perfect. The bonds and worlds in general were so cool, and honestly the ending was 🤌🏻. This was a fantastic debut, and I cannot wait for the next one!
I guess it’s fair to say it was quite a ride! Just when you thought you could trust someone… Victoria had to throw us a curve ball! She sure knows how to keep us on the edge of our seats 😅.
I was hooked a quarter into this book… I knew my heart was going to be shredded at some point and I’m so mad but also not? I love what Ry and Marcus have but Prince Caryk is making me question everything- the slow burn is 🥵.
But really, what I loved the most is the women empowerment in this book- Ry, Aya and Calliope are bad ass, even though Ry questions herself. I never said “yes, Queen!”Bad ass! “ “Go, Girl!” “Yes, bitch take that!” so much in a book. Ry building herself up and finding her voice and power again was just 🤌🏽✨.
Overall this was so much more than just a romantasy. The world building was so well done and honestly I’m still trying to figure out how the shape shifting into snakes happens here and how they just slither around 🤣. I can’t wait to see what happened next in the Palegos world! 👀
One question though for @victoriablack_books - how dare you??? How dare you leave us hanging like this??? That ends was 🫨😳😮💨. But also, thank you for letting me be a part of this ride and gifting me an ARC in exchange for an honest review 🫶🏽.
Such a fast paced and captivating plot! I love how the author jumps right into it and you have to keep up. Kept me on my toes the entire time, questioning who I was rooting for and what would happen next!
What an amazingly intricate plot for an author's first book! I was constantly surprised by the twists and turns. Excellent character development. I will be waiting eagerly to read the next book.
I received an advance copy for free provided by the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily
I first wanted to point out the aesthetic of this book! It is absolutely beautiful! I personally love how the green and black is used and it matches the story perfectly. I also wanted to point out that there is an entire character/location pronunciation in the beginning of the book!! I mean what? I personally, have NOT seen that on any other book. Maybe you have, but I have not. This is incredibly helpful. Do you know how many countless nights I have stayed up Googling how to pronounce character names or locations in stories! I truly appreciate that very much! This makes reading the story a breeze.
I went in with a certain expectation from the synopsis, as I continued to read, boy was I wrong. It was completely different! I was surprised!! Surprised in a very good way! I enjoyed this book very much, and found myself constantly picking it up! I ended up reading this book in a span of a few days! Queen Tamara is a wonderful FMC and the length she goes with her friends. It’s really the only thing I want to give up without giving up any spoilers. The book continues on an adventure in every chapter and does not have you feeling bored. It’s definitely worth the read!
