Spinning. Turning flax to fine linen thread for her family’s weaving business keeps Betha’s hands occupied all day, but it’s the concerns spinning in her heart that never truly rest. How can she give her nephew Henry a secure, loving home when his father remains indifferent? How can she guide the boy who calls her “Ma” to know and follow the Lord for himself? And when past secrets and future changes collide, will she lose Henry altogether?

Colm Gallagher is passionate about teaching boys using innovative educational methods. But is his kind and thorough instruction enough if he is not allowed to give his students the ultimate truth of God’s Word? Confronted by his student Henry Young and the boy’s lovely but determined aunt, Colm considers if he has allowed practical considerations to outweigh his deepest-held beliefs. Even as Betha and Colm are drawn to each other, family loyalties, financial pressures, and personal uncertainties push them further apart. Will the threads of their lives unravel or become knit together into something stronger?

Weaving linen is her family’s legacy. Weaving roots of truth and grace is her calling.

New-to-me author Heather Wood's first book, Weaving Roots, in A Gathering Of Mercies series, is a Christian fiction novel featuring Irish-American artisans in 1828 Baltimore, Maryland.

As a teacher, I appreciated a focus on the public education model of the time featuring the unknown to me method, the Lancaster method, used to educate the 200 students at Oliver Hibernian School in Fell’s Point.

As a Christian, I appreciated a strong faith focus throughout the book as Colm Gallagher, a teacher, wrestled with the separation of education and religion. I was also thankful for a reminder that when faith is passed down through so many generations, sometimes we can lose sight of the urgency of it. This book prompted me out of my complacency and offered an opportunity to refresh my commitment.

As a married auntie without children, I appreciated the focus on found family. Although I don’t live with or raise my niece and nephew, I provide childcare for them while their parents work. I cherish this role in their lives and could therefore identify with the challenges Henry (11 years old) and his mother, who happens to be his auntie, Betha Young, were experiencing. My heart hurt with the situations she found herself in, yet she always placed Henry first.

As a self-employed worker, I could appreciate the financial stress the Youngs were under as the family grew and cotton was overtaking linen in every market. My heartstrings were pulled as Seamus contemplated ‘going back to work’ as I’ve had moments like this in my 35 years of self-employment.

I highlighted and will treasure reminders to:
✔️live in courage and integrity even when our lives become difficult
✔️be grateful instead of feeding on discouragement
✔️wait on God

Wood's strong focus on faith throughout the book was a welcome change.

I eagerly look forward to her next sequel!

I was excited and curious to start this new series by Heather Wood. I appreciated Wood’s solid theology, unique premises, realistic family dynamics, and attention to historical detail in the Finding Home series. All of that is back in this new series, along with a time period very under-represented in historical fiction.

Weaving Roots brings an era about which I had only a very vague knowledge and interest and seamlessly unites the heart struggles of the pre-Industrial 1820s world with those of our own time. Worries over finances and failing means of livelihood? Desperate prayers and unremitting effort for beloved children to stay true to their faith? Struggles of conscience over how and how much to be involved in fighting the evils in society? The role of faith in educating children? Weaving Roots is so unexpectedly relatable.

I loved Betha and Colm, their sweet, gentle romance, their steady faith, their determination and resourcefulness. I wanted to pull up a chair and have dinner with them and I knew I’d be welcomed. I’m looking forward to sharing this book with my 12-year-old daughter as the romance is very appropriate and God-honoring, and I want her to see examples of happy marriages founded on selflessness and obedience to God’s design for relationships.

Highly recommend this book and eagerly anticipating the rest of the series!!

Weaving Roots is rich in historical detail, characters, and true-to-life struggles. To my knowledge, there aren't many pre-Industrial CF novels out there, which makes this one all the more appealing. There is a sweet, slow-moving romance, but first and foremost this book is historical fiction.

This is the second novel in a row where religious tensions between differing faiths are present. As drawn to theological debate as I am, those discussions were very interesting to read through. One of the biggest topics in this novel is providing Christian education in public school settings. Another is how God has created all His people as individuals with various strengths and callings. It was a good reminder that just because one serves God in his own way, does not mean everyone else must serve Him the same in order to be considered christian. I have to say, I'm surprised (but not really, considering I follow the author on Instagram so I'm aware of her values) how many hot topics were touched on in this book. Slavery, the Bible's place in public school education, and the unique callings of all God's children are the main ones, but I know there were more I didn't write down.

This book is heavily character-driven, so if you are drawn to action and quick-moving plots, this book probably isn't for you. But if you love a slice-of-life type of story, with a good dose of faith, I believe you'll enjoy this one. For me personally, I found it a bit one the slow moving side, particularly in the middle where I wondered several times what was driving the plot forward. However, it's clear Heather did her research, and I loved all the bits of information spread throughout. It definitely checks the historical fiction boxes for me!

*edited to add: It’s been over a week and I’m still thinking about this one. Honestly I don’t remember the last time I read a historical novel comparable to Elizabeth Camden but with such strong faith. History-loving fiction readers, this book is for you!

Content Notes: Weaving Roots is clean, although there were several mentions of married life towards the end that I wasn't expecting but not at all detailed.

I received a copy of Weaving Roots from the author. I was not required to leave a positive review. As always, all thoughts and opinions are strictly my own.

Once again, Heather Wood delivers a thoughtful, challenging, extremely well-written work of art. I fell in love with Colm the first time he stepped on the scene and Betha is a character that I aspire to be more life. She’s so hard working and sacrificial, but never losing her tender love for Christ.

I’ve always thought Heather has such a gift for writing about abstract concepts like abiding in Christ in such a way that I can see what it would look like lived out in someone’s life. Her books make me a stronger Christian.

The romance was chef’s kiss level. So tender and patient but realistic in their frustrations and the healthy, biblical intimacy was on point. I love books that portray that aspect of marriage in a respectful way. Heather doesn’t shy away from alll the important truths and aspects of life and marriage.

I can’t wait to see what she has next because I know it’s already going to be a favorite

4.5⭐️ This is my first book by Heather Wood and loved it! The history, culture, characters, spiritual reminders, and overall plot were fantastic.

Betha and Colm were both wonderful lead characters. I liked them both very much, and their individual struggles/growth through the story were inspiring. Though romance is an important aspect of this story, it was refreshing NOT to have weird awkward noticings or odd mentions of physical traits. It was simply sweet in the best ways. 🥰 I also enjoyed the practical relationship lessons in this story. So many good points!

Note: It bears mentioning, (and I’m trying to be concise here🤪) there are two married couples by the end of the story. Because of that, there are couple of more personal things said about marriage(not extremely detailed). As a whole, this was handled very well. One instance near the end may be TMI for some and could have been left out (a simple statement mentions act of intimacy but it is NOT a scene). For that reason, I’d recommend this story for over 18+—which is the target range anyway 😊. I still classify this as a squeaky clean story, and I didn’t lower my rating for this note. I just know some would like to know about this note (however minimal.)

OK! ON To the FAITH CONTENT❤️…I was blown away by how Heather wove that in so naturally. Well done!!! 👏👏👏👏👏⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ this is the kind of historical fiction I can get behind: a story brimming with spiritual encouragement and conviction—one that challenges readers to think deeper and biblically. The Christian characters actually live like genuine believers—not perfectly, but they walk with the Lord. It was SO refreshing. There were so many wise/biblical thoughts and reminders of the Lord I highlighted. A couple of them nearly brought me to tears because they were so relatable. I

Weaving Roots is a well written, historical Christian fiction story, and the author definitely did her research! It was intriguing to learn a bit about the culture in Baltimore during the early 1800s. Mid-read I learned that there is another series that is “related” somehow to these characters. Yay! I look forward to reading those in the future!!

Thank you, Heather, for the ARC copy. All the opinions above are my own❤️ (I wasn’t required to write a positive review. This book definitely earned it!😉)

Content: use of “bastard” correctly for the time (illegitimate child), married couples (see note above), slavery (as a vice), alcohol

4.75 stars!

Betha helps care for her nephew, Henry. Henry is Betha’s Brother Seamus’s son. Henry was born out of wedlock and his mother died during childbirth. Betha makes it her sole responsibility to make sure Henry grows up properly and to have a strong faith in God. When they move to a new town, Betha meets Henry’s new school teacher, Colm. Colm is interested in Betha but she won’t leave Henry to be in a relationship with Colm. But when Seamus meets a woman and marries her, everything changes but is it for the better or worse?
Wow what a great story! I really loved this story! Especially the last 40%, it was so impactful and really well done! You really feel for these characters in their struggles. I really appreciated the strong Christian faith elements! Be prepared to be emotional, I definitely teared up. Overall, this is a great story and I definitely recommend!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75

Content: child death, death in childbirth(referenced), 3 uses of “b*stard” in context

Have you ever curled up with a book and felt like you were transported to another time? Heather Wood's Weaving Roots is so much more than a story, it's a warm hug from history, wrapped in the sweet whispers of faith. Set in 1828 Baltimore, it's a tale that weaves together love, family, and the unwavering strength we find in God.

Betha, our protagonist, isn't your typical damsel in distress. This woman's heart is a loom, tirelessly working to create a safe and loving haven for her nephew Henry. But the threads of her past and the harsh realities of the era threaten to unravel everything she's built. Then there's Colm, a kind teacher wrestling with a dilemma – how can he share the Gospel with his students when the very walls of the school seem to forbid it?

As their paths intertwine, a sweet, God-ordained romance blossoms, a beautiful unfolding of what happens when two souls walk in step with His will. But Weaving Roots is more than just a whispered promise of love. It's a tapestry rich with questions that resonate with our hearts, yearning for God's guidance. Should the Holy Scripture grace the halls of learning? How do we live out our faith when the world seems headed down a different path? These are weighty questions that linger long after the last page, sparking conversations that nourish the spirit and ignite a fire for answers as relevant today as they were in 1828.

Heather Wood's characters weave themselves into the fabric of your heart. Betha's unwavering faith is like a steady lighthouse, guiding us through the tangled threads of life. Her unwavering trust in God is a constant reminder that He is always present. Colm's grapple with his calling feels like our own, a relatable struggle that underscores the courage it takes to stand firm in your convictions. Their love story unfolds organically, a slow burn fueled by shared values and a deep respect for one another. It's a refreshing departure from the often-cliched romances of the genre, offering a love built on a foundation of faith and shared purpose.

Here are just a few of the many wonderful lines that whispered truth to my heart:

She needed to get somewhere quiet where she could unload her heart to the Lord and find the peace she needed in His presence.

“The burden is heavy, though, and as much as I ought to say it’s best to leave it with the Lord, it’s a message I haven’t completely learned myself. We are, after all, told to bear with one another’s burdens, but we’re also told that the heavy laden who come to Jesus will be given rest. So even though we walk with the Lord, our journey is never completely burdenless.”

Yes, she’d been trying to carry the burdens of the household alone, as if their survival rested on her shoulders instead of the Lord’s. His hands were much more capable, and the worry and anxiety she carried did not come from a place of trust in Him.

If you cherish historical Christian fiction woven with rich threads of faith, then Weaving Roots is a treasure waiting to be discovered. It's a story that lingers, a tapestry so vivid it becomes a treasured part of your own faith journey. It reminds us that family is a haven intertwined with love, that faith is the guiding light through life's tangled threads, and that God's love is the masterful hand weaving a beautiful tapestry from the threads of our lives.

I received a digital copy of Weaving Roots from the author. I love it so much; I purchased the eBook. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing style, the pacing, and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.

4 stars. The things that intrigued me most about this book’s blurb was the weaving, the chosen family, and the idea of a spiritual lesson being tied to the question, should Bibles be used in schools, and what do you do if it’s forbidden you? Sounds like a modern problem, hm? Yet it isn’t!

I don’t know much about Baltimore, or about 1828 America, so I enjoyed the setting, and particularly seeing the working class. The weaving, as I’ve mentioned before, was also a cool element, and I appreciated all the little life details thrown in, like the cookbook and beds! Being homeschooled the Charlotte Mason way, I was also fascinated by Colm’s school and the Lancaster method.

Speaking of Colm, he’s a pretty great guy! I appreciated how he’s not flawless or fearless, but he also has (or develops) confidence and strength. I deeply related to his struggle with comparison and his brother’s censure for not doing the same work as he was, and I really appreciated how that was resolved. Betha was probably my favourite. She was very realistic, but strong, and so caring. As an eldest sister, I related to her position and struggles. Henry was a sweet boy—not too sweet though!—and although Seamus and Cora were the antagonists I couldn’t help liking them in the end, despite their many failings. Colm’s family was darling, and I would specifically like to see Patrick’s story and more Underground Railway activity!

My favourite thing about the novel was the spiritual themes. First off, there’s a very good message about trust and prayer, though it’s not the main focus. The main message is about Colm struggling with whether or not he should use the Bible in his school, or leave it out so he can gain the affections of his students and so lead them to his Sunday school. His arc is well paced, and there was a lot to think about, but I love the final realization that the Gospel is paramountly important and not just a Sunday thing. And there’s a couple other little themes and messages that I really appreciated.

Betha, Colm, and Henry make a lovely family, and I look forwards to the next book in this series!

Content: a few light mentions of the marriage bed, etc; Henry was conceived out of wedlock and some people in the book refer to him with a slur.

This book was engrossing and uplifting. I connected quickly with the characters and very much enjoyed their efforts to learn and grow in their faith while doing the work God has given them.

Much of the book's plot revolves around one character coming to realize he needs to be including the Bible in his classroom teaching, and the controversy that stirs up. Author Heather Wood includes historical notes about this exact controversy actually happening at that school in the 1820s, which was fascinating. History really does run in cycles, and the more I learn about the 1820s, the more they remind me of the 1920s and the 2020s.

Full disclosure: I received an advance review copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions here are my own and freely stated.

Whether this is your first introduction to the work of Heather Wood, or are already in love with the four Young siblings, you can guarantee that you will be treated to a fascinating historically-accurate story and undeniable Biblical truths. As stated in my title, this book is simultaneously encouraging and convicting to any follower of Christ. I read a review that remarked it slowed down their reading of the book, to be confronted with truths and ideas, and evaluate their own life in light of what was read. I think that can only be viewed as a good thing. If we are reading anything (especially Christian literature) and not being impacted by the words we read, then what is the point?

Colm is a perfectly-written, desirable, hero...who is struggling with his own feelings of inadequacy, doubt about his life choices, and fear of letting people down - specifically, his brother.

Betha is determined, caring, and a selfless provider in her family...but she's already lost her brother to the world, and lives in constant fear that her young nephew Henry, will follow his father's footsteps. She meets Colm and finds that it lightens her spirit to have someone to unload on, but the obstacles of her family and the family business, means it can never be more than friendship.

Heather takes the time to develop both Colm and Betha's relationship struggles with their brothers, making them forefront issues, rather than afterthoughts to the storyline. I jumped back and forth between finding aspects of both main characters that I related to, so I still can't tell you if I'm a Colm or a Betha! A key concept in the book, is that one person's "right path" is not the same for another. Each person has their convictions, priorities, and gifts, and God does not call us all to the same ministry!

Highly recommend for clean, realistic, Christian fiction!

“The Bible wasn’t a neutral book, and the words in it didn’t leave room for a passive response. If a heart wasn’t changed by it, it very likely would find itself in sharp opposition to it."

This story was thoughtful and edifying to my soul. As a mom, I could relate so easily to Betha and her struggle to trust the Lord with her son, Henry and even her challenges with her hard-hearted brother, Seamus. She was wise and endearing, but also human and flawed. Colm, oh Colm — such a wonderful character with his own challenges and questions. The conflicts he wrestled with were thought provoking to me as a Christian. I loved the journey Heather takes us on here and the questions asked. Full of realistic family dynamics, attention to historical detail I’ve come to expect from this author’s storytelling and truly a delight to read. Weaving Roots was excellent.

4.5⭐️s

I always appreciate Heather’s books and how the Gospel truth is seamlessly in every conversation and thought and word. It’s a refreshing clean read peppered throughout with Scripture. Her characters always have the Gospel in the forefront of their mind before any decision.

The amount of history researched and given to us is just amazing. I really didn’t know much of how life was before stoves were a thing. Love learning little tidbits.

I’m not a really romance reader but for anyone wanting a clean Christian romance this is for you! I would say this is a character driven story with evolving and lovable characters. If you’re more of a plot driven reader just know going in. You will love the characters (or strongly dislike certain ones). I’m looking forward to see how this new series develops and gives us the backstory of the Youngs.

The books in Heather Wood’s first series have become some of my favorite comfort reads and I couldn’t wait to meet new characters and see what she would do with a totally new time period and setting. This did not disappoint! I loved everything about it and could hardly put it down.

The history was well researched and added so much to the story. There were various themes of educational philosophy, political and social issues, how society and industries were changing with new advancements, immigrant communities and how they functioned, and more I could list if I thought harder. These themes were never spelled out like a history textbook, but were sprinkled in to give such a great sense of time and place.

The characters are relatable while also being beautiful examples of genuine faith. They face problems and mess up, but they always look to Christ and spur one another on to greater faith and sanctification. As a mom of growing boys, I especially appreciated a mother/son relationship and the reminders that we can plant seeds of faith but God ultimately brings growth. We can’t strive or work to earn our own salvation or anyone else’s. This book is full of reminders to be faithful in the work set before us while remembering that we can rest in Christ and his finished work and trust that God is working in our lives when we are seeking him.

If you haven’t read any of Heather’s books yet, this would be a great place to start!

One of the nicest Irish family stories I've read, hands down. I loved the setting and Betha was someone I found bits and pieces of my own struggles in from time to time. It is the exact kind of book to transport you directly into that era, and give you lots of food for thought! It never drags and I want to know more of the people involved! (Especially Patrick. He has much more in store for him, I feel like.)
Generous wedges of faith and our walks with God being challenged and strengthened, as well as the subject that each person's calling is not the same as the other's.
The linen weaving was truly intriguing. I also love the mention of all the delicious, hearty meals that are prepared.
No language whatsoever.
It is delightfully clean, and reminds me in fact a lot of the older historical fiction. There are a few kisses, and a couple mentions of married life that caught me by surprise, on a side note.

I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to have read this amazing book in exchange for my honest review!

4.5 stars for this great historical novel from Heather Wood. I haven't read anything from her before, but will likely read more now. I loved Betha and Colm, and their dynamic together, more than the characters or romantic relationships in a lot of books I've read recently. Their struggles feel real and important, not something that is contrived just for the sake of drama or making their romance more exciting. None of the characters felt one-dimensional, all-good or all-bad, which honestly is rare and refreshing.

I had a few minor quibbles with the book that likely wouldn't bother others. Those didn't much hinder my overall enjoyment of the book, which was very well-written and well-researched as far as I could tell. For example, it made me appreciate living in a time when stoves aren't a brand-new invention!

This book is clean, with just brief, non-descriptive mentions of a kiss and of married couples having sex. The book also sensitively addresses topics that may be difficult for some readers (death and corporal punishment in schools). It has a strong, clear Christian message including a presentation of the Gospel.

Thank you to Heather Wood for the free eARC! This review contains my honest opinions.

I absolutely loved this novel! Once again, Heather Wood proves her skill at developing complex and relatable characters, as well as portraying family dynamics in a way that is realistic and endearing. Weaving Roots immerses the reader in history that was, for me, lesser known and all the more interesting because of it. The faith elements are so strong and seamlessly integrated into the core of the story, challenging and growing the reader alongside the characters. Betha and Colm's love story is beautifully sweet, one that I was wrapped up in and rooting for from start to finish. Highly recommend!

This is a book where the title takes on multiple meanings, with the Young siblings working in the textile industry and with Betha and Colm learning what it means to have God intimately woven into the very fabric of their lives. I loved the Psalms that brought the imagery of being rooted in Him and how this translates to family roots. All in all, this is a completely mesmerizing book that gives readers the opportunity to think through and examine the cost of being faithful to Jesus while experiencing the pressures of the world. In fact, the struggles that Christian parents face today regarding their children's education and upbringing make this book timely and relevant.

With all of the references to Scripture and accounts of characters faithfully following Jesus, Weaving Roots is the definition of an inspirational book where its characters act in an aspirational manner while being honest about their struggles and fears. Not only is the book a moving account of how God can answer prayers, but it also demonstrates what being bold for Christ can look like. Readers who want overt and unashamed Christian messages in their books will find much to plumb here; this is surely a book that will provoke critical thinking while exercising faith.

Allowing God complete control is not easy.

This is a new author for me, and I delighted to say that this is a wonderful story. The spiritual quality of the plot and characters shows a depth that will make you stop and look inward at yourself. It clearly reminds us that surrendering everything in our life to God can be hard and difficult at times, because we want to control and get it done in our time and way.

The historical details of the story were very well researched and presented. The spiritual awakening of some and the hardening of others was very true of this time period. My heart broke for Henry and other children like him that are judged and labeled because of his parents’ choices.

Betha and Colm do get a HEA but it is not the focal point of the story. You get to watch them grow, fail, make mistakes, and move forward. They are a true team in their marriage; they seek the benefit of each other over themselves and put God first. God does work things all out for good.

I would recommend this book to others; a clean, wholesome, informative, and spiritual novel that will make you take stock of your own life and decisions. I received a complimentary copy and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.

Weaving roots is a faith filled story filled story filled with an interesting cast of characters. The main character, Betha is a flax spinner for her family's linen business. They recently moved from New York City to Baltimore to start over for her nephew Henry. He starts school in Baltimore where she meats Colm, the school teacher. It's apparent that they are immediately interested in one another.

The Christian faith elements in this book are strong which is great for my fellow Christian fiction enthusiasts. Many of the characters in the book are not Christians and others are creating for some great tension in the story. The characters evolve in faith and in the relationship dynamics in a very believable way. The nephew Henry's faith struggles as a pre-teen are also very relatable.

This was my first book read by this author and has prompted me to want to read more books by her. I was able to receive an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Heather Wood transports readers into history, interspersing so much fascinating detail seamlessly. The struggle of where the Bible belongs in education was interesting, and the internal conflicts of both MCs were realistic and relevant. A sweet, honoring historical romance that lives up to the author's tagline of Thoughtful Christian Fiction.

This is such a beautifully written story. This is a book that will stay with you long after you finish the last page. I finished this book with a contented sigh and thought to myself “I really needed that”.

Wood has this special gift of being able to write realistic faith elements that are strongly woven throughout her stories. This book was no exception. She has the ability to write faith journeys that are raw and real. She can write the joys and sorrows of believers so well, and it leaves her readers with such strong encouragement. What struck me was the tension Colm was feeling about bringing Christ and faith into the classroom. We still feel this today with not only our schools, but our places of business as well. To see this worked through in this book is inspiring.

Colm and Betha are two completely wonderful characters. The amount of growth they both go through was encouraging. I absolutely adored their slow growing but solid romance. The tenderness, patience, and communication, it was so good!

I also really enjoy how well Wood writes the intricacies of family dynamics. There was a lot going on in Colm’s family, as well as in Betha’s. Beauty and pain, love and loss, highs and lows. I felt all the feelings while reading this book. Anger, sadness, joy, excitement. Gah! So good!

While you don’t have to have read The Finding Home series to enjoy this book, I would encourage you to read it. It was so fun to go back to the beginning, so to speak, to find out how the Young family and their legacy of faith all started.

Heather’s books are my very favorite and this one didn’t disappoint! I loved Colm and his desire to do better and teach scripture in school! I enjoyed seeing how Colm and Betha’s relationship came together and their tender love. Heather always paints a beautiful picture of a realistic and godly marriage. Henry might have been my favorite character and I can’t wait to see how his story unfolds! Thank you Heather for writing another amazing book to add to our libraries!

What a fantastic story! I don't even know where to start!

Betha is such a wonderful character. She lives with her brother, Seamus, who I wanted to clobber no less than a dozen times throughout the story. She also takes on the roll of ma to Seamus's son, Henry. Betha loves them well and does her best to guide her little family in the Lord. Seamus just does as he pleases. The author did a great job at making him utterly dislikable!

Then there's Colm. He's a great teacher and it was fun to imagine a school day like the one the author gave us a glimpse into. The kids helping kids to learn. He's challenged by Henry to include more faith in his class, but that goes against the policies that have been established.

We journey with Betha, Colm, and Henry and they grow closer together and hearts begin to change. I know in today's world, and obviously back in the 1800s, keeping Christianity out of schools was a high priority, sadly. It was helpful to watch Colm struggle with how the Lord was leading him. I think many of us could relate to him.

Seamus makes so many poor decisions about Henry throughout the story I just wanted to scream. I was thankful that Betha was there to love on Henry over and over again.

The faith thread through the story was wonderful. Betha was a lovely example of how a gentle word can turn away wrath. I couldn't stop thinking about the characters when I was away from the story and can't wait to read book two!

The narrator did a fantastic job and I'll definitely be listening to the second book!

- Can we take a moment for the cover? Because it’s stunning and captures the story so well! I’ve admired Hannah Linders work for a while now and am excited to reveal my own top secret cover that she’s designed for me soon🤐. I also love the title, being not only clever but impactful in its deeper meaning. Titles are SO HARD, but Heather nailed this one.

- We discover this story through the eyes of Colm and Betha and each are wonderful in their own way. We get to know not only about them and their inner worlds, but all the relationships that make them who they are. I especially love Henry, Betha’s nephew and his importance in the story.

- Without giving away any spoilers, I can say that romance is woven through this story but it isn’t only a romance. It also deals with adult sibling relationships, difficult sister-in-law relationships, adoptive parenting, etc. being a well-rounded and immersive read.

- If you are hungry for solid Christian fiction that doesn’t shy away from sharing biblical truth in an intentional and in depth way, this is for you. Heather doesn’t shy away from or attempt to “sneak it in,” here and there, but writes with a single focus of sharing its content and truth.

- I think the thing that I enjoyed the most is Heather’s attention to detail in historical research and execution, which I highly value and appreciate in historical fiction. Researching and then depicting somewhat obscure portions of history is no easy feat and Heather did it well. I appreciated how she handled the history of the Bible being taught in schools in Maryland in the 1800’s and showed the nuances and struggles around the issue.

Informative, thoughtful and encouraging read.

I received an ARC copy of this book, but all thoughts are my own.

This was a late night Audible suggestion for me. Turns out it wasn't a great book to listen to while falling asleep. It had long sessions of day to day thoughts and activities with little blurbs of plot twists in the same tones of voice. I'd end up dozing off in the slow parts only to wake myself back up to listen again so I could find the plot twists I missed. I listened to some chapters 3 or 4 times.
I didn't enjoy the characters in this book too much--I didnt love or hate them.
The main characters thoughts and feelings about people and situations did play out in a way that felt realalistic. but it felt a bit Elsie Dinsmore in that the narrator made the good and innocent characters voices particularly pethetic and possibly even annoying to listen to.
The plot was well developed and it's obvious that much research went into trying to recreate the time period correctly in every way. From politics and religion to technology to fads to coming and going carreers of the time. It was exceptionally well researched. I love that in a book. It's what took it to 4 stars for me. I also thought that while the plot was slow moving, it was very engaging.
I also liked that the author was passionate about weaving the gospel, not just as information, but as a decision and a relationship, into the story.
Lots to love and hate in this book! I won't be recommending it around, but begrudgingly must give it good stars.

Enjoyable read. The characters were sweet! Their spiritual growth and reliance upon God felt heartwarming and inspirational.

The author wrote the romance weirdly sometimes, but only the Craftmasters can make the hokey-ness of budding love feel…not hokey. Although the romance was central to the plot, there were other interesting sub-plots which poked big moral questions about duty to God and family and community.

I don’t like when characters keep repeating how they are stuck in an either-or circumstance, without coming up with a creative solution that makes everyone happy. That lingered a little long for me, but was welcomely resolved a little-over-halfway into the novel, because ultimately the characters were reasonable people.

Unsure on whether I’ll move on in the series.

This was my first ever book by Heather Wood and it will not be my last! Heather is obviously an incredibly talented story-teller. This story is extremely well-researched, and there is such depth of faith and theological truth presented throughout the character’s lives. As someone who studied education in college and loves teaching, I loved the educational philosophy theme in the story and the discussions about faith in the classroom–SO good! This story tackles so many societal issues, and I loved learning more about this time period in history (Baltimore, 1828) through this story. I didn’t want to put it down!

I can’t wait to read more from this author now.

“ Weaving Roots” by HeatherWood is the first book in “A Gathering of Mercies” series. It is a sweet and clean historical romance. If a reader likes a romance story that is clean and has historical facts and Biblical truths, then I say pick up this book and you won’t be sorry. My heart was hurting for Henry, but was glad he had Betha on his side. I know we aren’t.suppose to not like people but I think it is ok to like fictional characters in books that we read because I didn’t like Bertha’s brother or his intended future wife. I forgot to say the story was easy to follow and I had to keep turning the pages because I had to find out what was happening. It does have a sad event that made me sad for a little bit then Then I remembered that it’s just a story.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.

Christian Historical Romance

I didn't know what to expect as this author is new to me, but a free audiobook code, convinced me to listen, and I'm so glad I did! I LOVED this book and my only problem was fitting in the time to listen uninterrupted!! I loved the story, the Faith based conflicts, the romance, and ESPECIALLY the narration! She was superb!! So, thank you and I can't wait to listen to the next book!!

I enjoyed this beautiful yet heartbreaking story of faith and family. The big question asked is if it's worth it to risk everything for God? The answer is that it might not appear to be "worth it," at least not by the world's standards. But being steadfast in personal conviction from God gives peace amidst the trials. I cried. So good!

I listened to the audio which was well done.
