This novella was the inspiration for my full length book Dispatches from a Future War. The novel contains this novella's story but expands on the themes of the story and much more. It tells the stories of the men and women who had to face a new kind of war and the price they had to pay. . This was a war of firsts. The first war fought above ground in Mega building 200 stories and higher, room by room, floor by floor. it was a meat grinder of a war that was using up a whole generation. It was the first war with medical systems built into the Marines armor. It was the first war where it was hard to die. You could "die" but only long enough for the medics to put you back together and send you back to fight again. How long could someone endure a war that never ends. This is the story of one Marine who had to face this new war and it consequences.

The real price for war.

The loss of one's humanity is the real price society pays for war. In 89 pages Mr Carstens was able to show through his books characters the pain, suffering, and anguish both male and female warriors must endure in combat. This short book isn't for those who relish war as the ultimate turn on. This is for the chicken-hawks and others who have no clue or qualms of sending you, others, or I to fight their WARS. Nuff said!!!

Wow, what an interesting commentary on war. I don't know if it was meant to be, but i took away a few lessons.

This book is an interesting look into the deep costs of war and the possibilities of how it will be conducted in the future. The world seems to be very deep, though it is only hinted at in this book.

If you like books on the human mind and its ability to continue functioning under great stress, or science-fiction stories about how wars will be conducted in the future this book just may be for you.

The content was compelling and immersive, i found myself rooting for the characters.

Warning, don't love anyone too much. War it seems is hell even with better technology in the future.
