A parade of colorful construction vehicles doing their work means plenty of joyful noise! From the crane that lifts, lifts, lifts to the bulldozer that push-push-pushes, to the steamroller that rolls, rolls, rolls, every machine here makes it own special sound. Kids will love the irresistibly rhythmic text and the adorable, personality-filled vehicles with headlights that look like eyes. And the surprise ending, when the great big mess on page one becomes a wonderful playground, is sure to leave them delighted!
NEVER GOOGLE HEARTBREAK is Emma's first novel very loosely based around her own experiences of being in her thirties and single in London, of being dumped, getting over it, and falling for it all over again. She has worked as a waitress, technical assistant, chambermaid, sandwich designer, product manager, illustrator and teacher, and spent a while traveling and working in Asia. She has also written and illustrated three children's picture books. She now lives in Yorkshire with her husband and three children, and is getting excited about the launch of the second book in the series, OMG BABY!
I check out one, ONE BOOK on trucks from the library and a flip is switched in my son, like he’s been waiting his whole life for this moment. Now we read tip tip dig dig 7 times in a row and watch the garbage truck go by and play with cars more than ever. What happened??
Very good book used in the nursery on SEB. It has repetative words, and goes into the use of the transport vehicles as to what they do and how. Best of all the end result of the vehicles, diggers, truck, road rollers etc all work together to make the new adventure playground, the children really liked this and talked about what they could see if the playgroud. Which also helps with CLL. Read the book on day too and we used BIG ARM movements to describe what which vehicles can do ie Digger DIg DIG DIG DIGGING (arms digging). I also enjoyed the book and was amazed how much we got out of this book.
Lots of great action words that young readers can imitate. The repeated words mean kids can easily pick up on the pattern and jump in themselves. I also like how each truck is a different color - makes for a good question to ask during storytimes! The mixed-media illustrations and broad brush strokes are nicely textured, helping to evoke the dirt and mud of the construction site. The copy I have is a board book so the pages are a little small, but the white backgrounds help make the illustrations visible from a distance. Overall, this is a great way to introduce young kids to some new verbs and construction site vocabulary.
This book has been in regular circulation in our house for the past year. It has been great for promoting speech (consonants). It has repeating words, so you can leave the last one off to have your child complete the series. It also introduces vocabulary, including verbs. The colors of the vehicles allow you to use it for learning and practicing color identification as well. It is fun and engaging, with an ending that always delights my kids.
Each spread introduces a new construction vehicle and a verb to explain what it does. All the verbs lend themselves to motions that kids can do. Worked well for a construction storytime for toddlers. I liked watching them tip side to side. Like Tap Tap Bang Bang, I wish it was easier for readers to be able to guess at what was being constructed. Always simple and easy to understand text and illustrations-->great for storytime, large crowds, and younger audiences.
In contrast to the book description (which says everything makes its own unique sound), I think this book is about verbs.
The question isn't so much "What does the digger say?" as "What does the digger do?"
We see dig, mix, lift, tip, push, and roll. We get to see the machines that do such thing (illustrated through colorful Eric Carle-like collages). And we see the end result.
Awesome illustrations. They look like they were made with paper and the texture looks so realistic. The story is basically saying what each type of machinery does. For example, the digger digs (and the action word of what that machinery does is repeated 3 times) so it becomes "The digger digs digs digs". Great visual book for construction and transportation themes for preschool.
Read by Librarian Laura on the London Public Library's on-line "Books for Babies" program. Big, colourful, construction vehicles all working together, having their own job to do for a surprise ending.
Our little one LOVES this book! We’ve been reading it every night since we got it 2 weeks ago. And if you sssslllloooowww down the reading and do it monotone, it’s almost guaranteed to put them to sleep.
‘Tip Tip, Dig Dig’ is a display of colourful construction vehicles completing their routinely works. What started out as a big mess at the start becomes a beautiful playground at the end of the story. Emma Garcia has fantastically created a perfect book for children in early years, as each page is illustrated with bold colours and pictures. The book highlights different machinery in each page and the jobs they do. With the use of repetition and rhyming words, children can easily participate to read aloud altogether. Children are engaged with the rhythmic text e.g. ‘with the digger, we can dig dig dig, with the bulldozer, we can push push push’, allowing them to also use actions to demonstrate the machinery. I found that the use of hand movements allowed children to comprehend and remember each machinery’s role, engaging them all with the book. This book not only develops their basic vocabulary of verbs, but also allows them to understand what each machinery is used for.
What I love most about this book are the illustrations & the ease I have with associating craft ideas with the book. We've been making replicas of the construction equipment using different shapes, colours & textures. There's soo any wonderful educational ideas that a parent can use with this book.
For example, yesterday, my 2 year old made a crane using the shapes of several rectangles, a square, a triangle & several circles. This taught her about shapes. We used 3 different colours of construction paper this taught her about colours. We used ribbon for the pulley, this allowed for diffident textures & material to be played with. I asked her how many of each shape were in the picture, what shapes, what colours etc... We had so much fun, best of all she learned so much from the activity. I highly recommend this book in association with learning activities. As a read alone, it's a little too basic.
This paperback book uses bright colours and large beautiful illustrations that cover whole pages. It is a big book that allows it to be used easily as a read-aloud book.
The first page of the book offers young minds the opportunity to think about and answer the question, "look at all this mess! What can we do with it?
Each page after this highlights a different piece of machinery that may be able to clear up the mess. Through the use of repetition on each seperate page, young children are encouraged to interact and read along with the story.
The book finishes with another question and a pictureof each of the different machines, allowing the children to think back and consider what individual job they done e.g. with the roller, we rolled, with the crane, we lifted.
I think this is a fun, engaging book that would benefit children between the ages of 3-5 years of age.
Summary: Construction trucks work to fix up a big mess and create an adventure playground.
"Look at all this mess! What can we do with it? With the digger we can Dig Dig Dig. With the mixer, we can Mix Mix Mix."
Bright, bold illustrations. SImple text with opportunity for child to repeat the verbs. Perfect book for toddlers!
Will use with Toddler Story Time. and could also use with PreK story time

In this board book various machines show what they can do to clean up a mess and turn it into something useful. Each of the six colorful machines has it's own spread with white background and simple illustrations stating the machine's name along with one word (repeated three times)to describe it's job. Motions can easily be created for each of the machine jobs. The story also summarizes what each machine did so a retelling at this point, perhaps with a felt board, or with the child's own toys, would work well. Children will be happy with the new environment.
Each piece of construction equipment has a job to do in order to help clean up the mess. The digger can dig, dig, dig and the mixer can mix, mix, mix.
This is a very colorful picture book with lots of bright colors that really grab your attention. The simple pages really leave the story and jobs up to the individual pieces of construction equipment so they can really shine. The repetition on how each piece of equipment works is great for kids and then shows how they use those skills to work.
