This is a text I know I will revisit time and again. The teachings are broad and far reaching, almost too much to comprehend in a single reading. At its core, this story calls people to act in unity, love and fellowship. Well worth reading.
I accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior as a child in Darien when my parents were attending St. Paul’s. Terry Fullam’s legacy is alive in my life today. It was really interesting to read this book about the prelude to that special time. Many of the hymns that still come to my heart hearken back to worshipping there.
Being there in the midst of what was happening at the time, I feel that Bob Slosser did an excellent job of describing what happened. It would be very important to understand however, that the true reason and basis for what happened was that the Lord desired it and brought it to pass. He decided to pour out His Holy Spirit, He decided to give people a hunger and thirst for His presence. But I'd also have to give credit to Fr. Arthur Lane who was St Paul's first rector. He tirelessly sought the Lord on behalf of the congregation and spent much of his time in prayer for our growth and blessing. Terry continued this prayer emphasis praying for each parishioner every day by name! Terry rose very early to seek the Lord each day, and even when the congregation swelled to over 850 families, he continued to pray for each one, each day! Not only was the Lord Jesus the head of the Church, but the Bible was recognized as the Word of God, and as such it was to be read, marked , and inwardly digested. Our Wednesday night Bible Studies were so crowded we had to borrow the parish hall of a neighboring church to hold them. All in all it's a good read. I miss those wonderful days..........
I bought this book when Bob Slosser was my writing professor, and, like the majority of my books, it sat unread on my shelves for far too long. It was a good book, but not exactly a narrative, which is what I had expected from reading the back cover and recalling another of Professor Slosser's books I'd read almost 20 years ago. Instead, Miracle in Darienfocused on various principles that caused the church in Darien to grow rapidly in the seventies, relying heavily on quotations from Terry Fullam's key sermons.
I am grateful for this record of the renewal story of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Darien, CT. Though a bit dated, there are simple, Scriptural principles here that can be put in practice to improve the health of a congregation.
