“One of the most atrocious crimes committed in this century, in this county, and probably the most atrocious against a male subject of Wakulla” – The Honorable Judge, George L. Harper

On Friday, March 5, 1982, comedian John Belushi was found dead in California. At the same time, on the other side of the nation in a small Florida town, a man was abducted and his home set on fire. Two months later his skeletal remains were found along the canal of an abandoned airstrip.

Southern Shock Americana is based on the true life accounts surrounding the case, its suspects, and the community in which it happened: Wakulla County, Florida.

As an author, a research and educator, I can't find the words to write how horrified I am that racism still rears up in all of its ugliness and ignorance in this country. Hatred is hatred and it is insanity at its worst. Herb brings this to light in his book. He is a gifted writer! That he took action to right this wrong by bringing it to light is a tribute to his soul! It is a must read!

Just finished this read. It's a well-written exploration of the murder, arrest, conviction and execution of John Mills, Jr. by his nephew--a man trying to come to terms with the events and, ultimately, the execution of a man who some/many believe was innocent.

Powerful. Raw. Emotional.
