Asking for Trouble

Rate this book
A TENSE ADULT DRAMA OF POWER AND PASSION IN APARTHEID SOUTH AFRICA DURING MANDELA’S IMPRISONMENTTwo white teenagers witness a brutal killing in a tribal stick fight in the heart of the Transkei, close to Mandela’s birthplace. It shocks Jamie Pringle into a dangerous pursuit of justice for all South Africans but reinforces Dirk du Toit’s deeply ingrained fear and hatred of black people. He joins the security police and embarks on a career of intimidation and violence to protect the privileged position of his Afrikaner volk. Dante Magubane, son of an impoverished tribal chief, is committed to the struggle to free his people from the white man’s yoke with single minded ruthlessness. Black, White and Coloured, English speaker and Afrikaner, male and female are thrown together in a compelling drama that tests their beliefs and ideals and apartheid’s unique laws. Pervading it all is the monolithic apparatus of apartheid and the shadowy spectre of the Bureau of State Security, run with ruthless and unrelenting fervour by its sinister head, General H.J. van den Bergh. The characters are ordinary people driven to remarkable deeds by the passions which apartheid fuels. They struggle to understand the complexities of their society before being driven by an overwhelming desire to change it, embarking on a deadly path of confrontation which leads to Mandela and an outcome none is prepared for.

I strongly recommend this as an exciting, informative and insightful book. A carefully crafted plot using the characters and story to make statement after statement, both subtle and blatant, about the apartheid era in South Africa. It sensitively conveys very real (even if a little stereotyped) contexts and attitudes of the different clashing cultures of the country through fascinating description and development of the characters. The author cleverly highlights and informs about attitudes and activities within the ruling government at the time, the Broederbond, the BOSS, the ANC and the different political and social perspectives. Well worth the read.
